Although Hoppé was one of the most important photographic artists of his era and highly celebrated in his time, his body of photographic work sat entombed in a London picture library for over thirty years after his death, which led to his being forgotten in the latter half of the twentieth century. Curator Graham Howe retrieved Hoppé's work from the picture library in 1994 and merged it with the Hoppé family archive of photographs to make it available to the public [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Voluptes De Paris

Paris-Publications, Paris - This is a near fine copy of the rarest of Brassai's books, which has been bound into a hardcover binding from the period, in handsome red and black marbled paper-covered boards, and a linen cloth spine with red leather label, gilt title. The original binding of this book was a spiral plastic ring type. The spiral binding was taken off and the book with its original red-orange covers with the title printed in large white letters, was bound in whole. Covers are bright and clean, in very good condition, (small closed tear to bottom corner of back cover), inside completely clean. There is no date on the colophon page (inside back cover) and there apparently were two editions. The first edition was published in 1930, but Brassai was reportedly unhappy with the selection of images and because he was not credited. In our copy he is credited as the photographer and so we assume this is the second edition from ca.1934. It is unpaginated. There are 40 pages, with 38 black and white photographs of ladies of the night, strippers, models, night clubs and balls like the Bal Tabarin, shots of tough streetwalkers in Les Halles, many shots of men and women in costume, sometimes drag, also a lesbian couple in a club "strictement Feminine", shots of lovers in parks, on streets, playful shots of men looking into a lingerie shop window with elaborately garbed mannequins at night, 1 shot of Kiki in a Montparnasse night club, an amazing shot in " La Cage a Femmes d'un Grand Music-Hall Parisien" which shows a cage or pit, viewed from above with women on stools, like lions, in various states of undress and performing "acrobatic" feats. Finally tipped in at the very end on the collophon page a half-page size shot in color of a nude woman in profile, we assume not by Brassai. Large 4to, 11" high X 8" wide. The original book was not cut down when re-bound, it is in its' intended size, and because of the re-binding, it has been kept in near fine condition. A beautiful copy of a true rarity.

Jonathan Cape, New York 1930 - FIRST EDITION, first issue, one of only 750 copies. "If T.S. Eliot was right in saying that American fiction took its first step forward since Henry James in The Great Gatsby, then one should be free to say that As I Lay Dying, which makes Fitzgerald's technique seem wooden and creaky, was a tremendous stride forward, making possible levels of awareness, a sense of variety, and a saturation of reality that would have delighted Henry James" (O'Connor, The Tangled Fire of William Faulkner). Petersen A7. New York: Jonathan Cape, (1930). Octavo, original cloth, original dust jacket. FIRST ISSUE, with "I" in the first line of page 11 dropped, in first state binding with lettering unbroken.         As I Lay Dying

Jonathan Cape, Harrison Smith 1930 - New York: Jonathan Cape, Harrison Smith, (1930). First edition, second issue, with capital I correctly aligned on page 11.NF/VG+. A little discoloration/dustiness within the groove of the front joint; minor spine lean and a light crease to spine. A few small spots in the margin of page 11. But book itself remains an altogether fresh and crisp example. Dust jacket is in similarly nice condition, with the following minor flaws: light wear to spine ends and along spine folds, trivial smudge/spot or two to front cover, mild crease to front flap. For some unknown reason (there being no tear), a former owner placed a 3" piece of tape on the inside of the dust jacket. That tape has been removed, but a light tape shadow remains - again, on the inside of the jacket. Original price of $2.50 present. Lovely copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Gulliver's Travels. Illustrated by Rex Whistler.

London: The Cresset Press, 1930 - 2 volumes bound in 1, folio. Recent green morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, titles to spine gilt, 5 raised bands, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Housed in a green cloth solander case. A little mild creasing to spine. An superb copy. Volume I with colour frontispiece and 5 plates, and 2 maps. Volume II with colour frontispiece and 6 plates, 3 maps, and 1 diagram. Head and tail pieces throughout. First Cresset Press edition, first impression. One of 195 copies on handmade paper from a limited edition of 205 numbered copies. The short-lived Cresset Press, co-founded by John Eldred Howard in 1927 and run by Dennis Cohen and A. I. Meyers until 1931, produced fine editions and reprints of the classics and Continental literature. Gulliver's Travels is one of the Press's finest books. The illustrative style of Rex Whistler (1905–1944), eschewing the experimentalism of the 1920s, found its inspiration in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and so was well matched to Swift's classic. In this book Whistler employed his favourite device of setting most of the illustrations within a highly decorative rococo marginal frame. A beautiful copy of this masterpiece of the book arts
