Paris: self-published, 1930. Octavo (19 x 14.5 cm). Rebound, with part of original wrapper affixed to front board; 250, [6] pp. Signed and inscribed by the author on the front fly leaf to an Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Krotiakoi (?), "Dai Bog, chtoby etot god vozsiial radost'iu i shchast'em dlia vsekh obezdolennykh." Binding scuffed and soiled; traces of moisture to top edge of last half of text (barely affecting pages); occasional light foxing; owner inscription of collector P. P. Dunkan. Grulev was a Jewish Russian military leader, writer and journalist, and a veteran of the Russo-Japanese War. In his memoirs, he describes his rather unusual fate, given his environment in turn-of-the-century Russia. Born to Jewish parents in the Vitebsk region, he was able to receive a good military education, finishing the Academy of the General Headwuarters (General'nyi shtab) in 1888 and rising to the rank of General. In great depth he describes life in the Pale of Settlement, the region of the Russian Empire where Jews were allowed to settle, his years as an army officer, service in Siberia, the Caucasus, Turkestan, as well as in the Far East during the Russo-Japanese War and the ensuing years. According to a printed note, all revenue from the sale of this book was to be donated to the cause of Zionism. Rare signed.

Photographe de Paris (First Edition with Captions Booklet)

Paris: E.Weyhe, 1930. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good. This is a first edition, first printing of Atget\'s iconic photobook \"Photographe de Paris\" published by E.Weyhe, New York in 1930. The book was also published simultaneously by Verlag Henri Jonquières, Paris and Leipzig, in 1930 with the German edition, \"Lichtbilder\" released in a limited edition of 1000. Berenice Abbott purchased the contents of Atget\'s studio in Paris -- 1,300 glass negatives and 7,000 prints assembled in albums -- following his death in 1927. She brought the collection to New York with the backing of Julian Levy. Together, they introduced Atget\'s work to the American public in a series of exhibitions and publications. The book features a frontispiece portrait of Atget by Berenice Abbott and 96 stunning full-page collotypes from the original Atget negatives. Pierre Mac-Orlan contributed an essay to the book and his essay concludes, \"For many among us Atget\'s Paris is now no more than a memory whose delicacy is already mysterious. It is worth all the books written on the subject, and without doubt will inspire others\" In his book, \"The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century\", Andrew Roth states, \"Over time, Atget\'s photographs have come to be seen by many as the beginning of modern photography.\" Measuring approximately 11 x 9.5 inches, the book is bound in the original burgundy colored cloth boards issued without a dust jacket. Included with the book is a captions booklet printed in a six-page gathering fold under plain leaf at the rear pastedown. The condition of the book is Very Good+ with some rubbing to the cover, spine, and tips as well as some very slight soiling. The internals are excellent with a solid binding. There is a previous owner\'s inscription on the first free endpaper which evidences foxing along with the front inside cover. There is also some age toning to the page edges that does not affect the images. Overall, this is a highly collectible copy of one of the greatest photobooks ever published. Cited in \"The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century\".

Histoire des Arts Anciens de la Chine

Paris: G. Van Oest, 1930. Four volumes, large quarto, with a total of 476 photographic plates, uncut as issued in the publisher's card covers with printed dust-jackets; covers a bit worn, a very good set. AN IMPORTANT RECORD OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE ARTS. Scarce and historically important set documenting the art and architecture of China, including hundreds of photographic plates from the author's personal archive. Osvald Sirén (1879-1966) was a pre-eminent sinologist and art historian of his generation. After completing a thesis on the European Renaissance, Sirén was drawn to oriental art through a personal interest in Theosophy. So began a life-long interest, of which Histoire des Arts Anciens de la Chine is a crowning achievement. Sirén was appointed professor at Stockholm University, although he lectured little and preferred to communicated through published works. Furthermore, like many art historians of the era, he advised private collectors and acquired artworks of significance during his travels in China. Sirén visited China several times between the wars, travelling widely and documenting remote and inaccessible sites. The present work reproduces many of the author's photographs, and as such forms a unique visual archive of Chinese art and architecture (sadly some of the sites documented in this series - including remote shrines and Buddhist wall paintings - did not survive the ravages of the cultural revolution). The set comprises the following, uniformly published under the auspices of the Musée Guimet: I. La period préhistorique l'époque Tcheou l'époque tch'ou at Ts'in 1929 II. L'époque Han et les six dynasties 1929 III. La sculpture de l'époque Han a l'époque Ming 1930 IV. L'architecture 1930.

Forty Famous Cocktails : Being a Compendium of Reliable Recipes Carefully Compiled For Use In This Arid Era. Engraved with Humble Apologies to that Master Engraver John Held Jr. [Title from recto]

New York: Colonial Sales Corp., n.d. circa 1930. Two pieces of printed pictorial cardboard, glued together on three sides and with view windows cut on both sides, and with double-sided sliding cardboard insert with printed recipes. 9.5 cm. x 14 cm. The smaller and simultaneously printed version of the otherwise identical movable cocktail recipe book featuring humorous illustrations in the style of celebrated barroom artist John Held (engraved by John Boland), and an imaginative sliding display for the cocktail recipes. The illustration on the verso of this piece is captioned, "The Road to Perdition or a Scene from the Back Room when Life Was Simple." The mention of "this arid era" in the title suggests a pre-repeal publication date. Light wear to cardboard edges, with additional wear to insert pull-tab at top, some light staining, else very good. Scarce. [OCLC locates only a single institutional copy of either versions of this work, at SMU's DeGolyer Library].

FLORODORA GIRL, THE / JOHN HELD, JR. ART (1930)

MGM 1930 - Vintage original 41 x 27" (102 x 67 cm.) one sheet poster, USA. Marion Davies, Lawrence Gray, Walter Catlett, Ilka Chase, dir: Harry Beaumont; MGM. Coming from the "Ziegfeld Follies", Marion Davies was allowed, in this lavish early musical, to display some of her comedic and musical abilities, unlike in some of the turgid historical romances partner William Randolph Hearst often required that she appear in. MGM pulled out the stops with top notch art direction and costuming set in the then-not too distant past of the 1890s. The last reel was in two-strip Technicolor. This movie opened the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood. Wonderful period caricature graphics by famous artist John Held, Jr., and art portrait of popular star Marion Davies. On linen, some touch-up at folds. A bit of soiling in the white background of the drawing. There are two 2" (5 cm.) inner tears to the left side of Marion's cheek in her portrait at top. NEAR FINE.

Typed Letter Signed, 4to, on stamped "R.A.F. Mount Batten, Plymouth," stationery, Nov. 7, 1930.

      - Dr. Cooper explains that Lawrence, "seeing two old people in difficulty with a car which wouldn't start, he offered to help them but the handle [hand crank] of the car on a backfire hit him in the wrist & broke it." The incident occurred in March, 1927, near Cranwell, but since Lawrence did not take the needed time to allow the wrist to heal, it never fully recovered. The letter shows LawrenceÕs wit and good humor about his own accident as well as his concern for his good friend, Charlotte Shaw. Lawrence refers to Charlotte Payne-Townshend Shaw, reformer, women's rights advocate and wife of author George Bernard Shaw. Lawrence writes to Charlotte's Shaw's doctor , William Cooper, who took care of Lawrence's broken wrist. In this upbeat letter with a literary reference to American author Henry James, Lawrence gives an update on Charlotte as well as his own injured wrist. At the end, he asks for the cost of the bill which he supposes Charlotte would have paid had she not become indisposed from an accident. In part, "and then the fun began. Dear Cooper was to presume on a very short acquaintance. Dear Dr. Cooper lined you up with a class you probably detest. Dear Mr. Cooper is stiff. So let's begin again. I was going to write just after the occasion; only I was detracked suddenly by the accident to Mrs. Shaw.she is not so long or quite recovered from a scarlet-fever incident at Buxton; (Henry James was the putative parent of that last sentence).she bumps down in Hanover square and will be tied by the leg for more weeks.I had wanted to say thank you for examining me that morning. Mrs. Shaw and I thought of it on the spur of the moment. What you had said was most assuring; as it is not likely to get worse I snap my fingers at it. Half an arm is plenty for one's old age, and I have still and arm and a half. Nevertheless, if fate does bring me to London (No wise man would prophesy anything concerning me) I will attend on you.It has been less painful.but do not flatter your art - it is faith and happiness acting through favorable judgement. Try telling a patient that she or he will get worse, and see it happen! Before Mrs. Shaw I could not discuss finance; she would have felt herself liable for bringing me.My scandalous life of enjoyment is not to be justified, but palliated perhaps, by paying for itself.let me know how much I am in your debt *." The asterisk is actually the "@" symbol and points to another below the signature with the following explanation. "Financially, I mean. Morally I am the assessor, and delighted." In his hand he writes and signs, "Yours T. E. Shaw." With envelope docketed by William Cooper explaining the letter.

        The World in 2030 A.D

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1930. Quarto, with a frontispiece and eight plates; a fine copy in the original black cloth, lettered in crimson. Futurist predictions come true? First edition of this extravagant vision of the future. The first Earl of Birkenhead (1872-1930) was a dashing figure, a 'swashbuckler' and 'ready subject for the caricaturist,' (DNB) who had a lengthy career as Solicitor General, and after 1919, Lord Chancellor. Reading The World in 2030 the knowledge that Birkenhead was drinking himself to death whilst writing comes as little surprise. It is an extraordinary work, displaying the occasional prescience of the unhinged. Amongst a very odd collection of statements about ectogenesis, the unlikelihood of future wars due to trans-national integration, scientific relativism, and the creation of a Florida-style 'playground for all Europe' in the basin of the Sahara, there is the bald announcement that atomic energy will be harnessed, that eugenics will be commonplace and the genes mapped, and that a 'mad dictator, jealous of Western progress, may precipitate a war, which will finally burn up and destroy Western civilisation'. Best of all, advances in television will mean that a busy Englishman will be able to follow 'an Australian test-match'. Accompanying the work are nine futurist plates by E. McKnight Kauffer.
