        Japanese Votive Slips Album...

Dates of the slips range from late Edo to early Showa periods (1860s - 1930s. Thick accordion style album of 145 Japanese senjya fuda ??? [lit. thousand shrines slips] or n?satsu ?? [literally votive slips] laid down on to the folded leaves of this attractive album. Slips are all in very good to excellent conditions. Patterned cloth covered boards. 19 x 13cm. A lovely collection beautifully presented. The very old custom of printing votive slips began when visitors to a shrine or a Buddhist temple stuck a paper slip with his/her name and address onto the building in commemoration of their visit, as well as in the hope of getting a divine favour. This custom became very popular in the mid-Edo period and the style of paper slips gradually changed from hand-written slips to colourful woodcut print votive slips. Shops as well as individuals came to produce decorative votive slips, and in the case of the slips printed by shops, they functioned as advertisements. As the votive slips became elaborate, they also became collectors' items. The majority of the slips in this album bear the names of shops and companies in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, there are a number of restaurants including many sushi shops, sweet shops [One such shop, Kohagi-do ??? in Shinbashi was in business until very recently), a kimono shop, a printing shop, a book shop [Hiroo Shoten ????? in Osaka which is still trading], a doll makers, and a fish shop.Another theme within the album are the very interesting slips printed by such individuals as: Hagino Ky?koku???? (Confucian scholar known for his eccentricity, 1717?-1817), Ichieisai Yoshitsuya ????? (ukiyo-e artist, 1822-66), Sany?tei Eny? ????? (rakugoka [comic storyteller], Ozawa Ichikawazu ???? (collector of items related to frogs, 1876-1960), Kawamura Meroji ????? (visual artist and cat lover, 1886-1959), and Nakamura Shikan ???? (Kabuki actor, 1831-99 [for Shikan IV] and 1866-1944 [for Shikan V]). Two slips depict westerners, one is named "Smith" and the other "Read". One slip says "Beikoku ofuda hakase [American expert on votive slips] jutay? ?????????". "Jutay?" was probably being the Japanese name of the American. The collection includes many large-size slips, most of which used the compositions of earlier ukiyo-e prints. A perfect example of this are the last thirty-five large-size slips which partially used the compositions of the series called Edo-no-hana meish?-e ??????? [Flowers of Edo: Paintings of Scenic Places] in the late Edo period. These votive slips are artistically charming and some have bold designs. There is one double leaf slip which shows a horse and was printed by T?to N?satsukai ????? [Tokyo Votive Slip Association].Over the years it has become very fashionable to produce elaborate votive slips and for collectors to meet and exchange them. Since the early 19th century through to today there have been regular meetings, n?satsukai ???, for collectors to exchange votive slips. These charming slips remain popular with collectors even today. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 157341)....

First Edition London Chatto & Windus 1930 First Impression (no further printings noted), one of only 2000 copies of the author's first title published in the United Kingdom, with preface by Richard Hughes (who wrote "A High Wind in Jamaica" and, incidentally, helped launch Faulkner in England). 8vo: xii,326,[6, including four pages of publisher's advertisements]pp. Publisher's coarsely woven aquamarine cloth, spine lettered in gilt, top edge stained aquamarine, bottom edge uncut; cream-colored dust dust jacket printed in red and black, priced 7s/6d. Dennis Wheatley's copy, with his bookplate on front paste down. Top edge spotted, others lightly browned, otherwise about Fine, square and tight, in better than Near Fine jacket, the spine dust-soiled and a bit darkened, edges lightly rubbed and nicked. Petersen A2.14. Fine- In 1925, Faulkner moved to New Orleans where he joined a literary circle centered on Sherwood Anderson and was introduced to the modernist innovations of T. S. Eliot and James Joyce. His interest in experimental writing was piqued, and he began a novel, his first, Soldier's Pay, portraying the tragic homecoming of a wounded war hero. Though set in Georgia, it was, nonetheless, a kind of rehearsal for the later Mississippi novels, full of despair and "mythic motifs of impotence and futile love." (The Literary Encyclopedia) Wheatley's stylish thrillers and occult novels made him one of the world's best-selling writers from the 1930s through the 1960s. His Gregory Sallust series was a key inspirations for Ian Fleming's James Bond stories. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.       ??. [Dalian]. Ato Inga Kyokai (??????) Ato Printing Association. 1922- circa 1930. 102 tipped-in professional gelatin silver prints on black card leaves, one to a page. A little oxidation causing mirroring at the edges of some images and some fading, one photograph creased but generally the photographs are in good condition. Photographs are accompanied by a tipped-in text description in Japanese (3 captions missing, 1 torn with significant loss). Unlettered paper covered boards, later red string tie. One leaf loosening and the margins of another creased in neither case affecting the image. Collection of professional photographs published by Ato Inga Kyokai (???????Ato Printing Association) a Japanese photography company based in Dalian between the 1922 and 1944. These photographs appeared in the journal published by Ato Inga Kyokai.Albums of Ato Inga Kyokai's photographs are uncommon and this album is particularly unusual. It appears that this compilation of photographs may have been ordered by the original owner to match their own interest as there are a large number of images of Shanxi Province. Sixty-two images are of Shanxi Province with another 40 images of Chinese subjects although their location is not specified. The subjects covered in this interesting album include portraits and scenes showing farmers, workers and a number of striking landscapes. The few albums of Ato Inga Kyokai's photographs which we have been able to locate, held by the University of Kyoto and the Diet Library in Tokyo, include some but not all of the photographs in this collection, a number of these photographs we have not been able to find in any collection. The photographs we have traced were all published in the period from 1922 to 1928. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 150082)....

Histoire des Arts Anciens de la Chine.

Paris: G. Van Oest, 1929-1930. Four volumes, large quarto, with a total of 476 photographic plates, uncut as issued in the publisher's card covers with printed dust-jackets; covers and jackets worn and chipped, (some splitting at covers and spines), nonetheless a very good set suitable for re-binding, internally well preserved. Scarce and historically important set documenting the art and architecture of China, including hundreds of photographic plates from the author's personal archive.Osvald Sirén (1879-1966) was a pre-eminent sinologist and art historian of his generation. After completing a thesis on the European Renaissance, Sirén was drawn to oriental art through a personal interest in Theosophy. So began a life-long interest, of which Histoire des Arts Anciens de la Chine is a crowning achievement. Sirén was appointed professor at Stockholm University, although he lectured little and preferred to communicated through published works. Furthermore, like many art historians of the era, he advised private collectors and acquired artworks of significance during his travels in China.Sirén visited China several times between the wars, travelling widely and documenting remote and inaccessible sites. The present work reproduces many of the author's photographs, and as such forms a unique visual archive of Chinese art and architecture (sadly some of the sites documented in this series - including remote shrines and Buddhist wall paintings - did not survive the ravages of the cultural revolution). The set comprises the following, uniformly published under the auspices of the Musée Guimet:I. La period préhistorique l'époque Tcheou l'époque tch'ou at Ts'in 1929II.

First edition Warsaw: Dziewulski, 1930. A fine copy of his doctoral dissertation - a seminal work in mathematical logic (Van Heijenoort: From Frege to Gödel). "Herbrand gave early signs of his mathematical gifts, entering the École Normale Supérieure at the exceptional age of seventeen and ranking first in the entering class. He completed his doctoral dissertation in April 1929. That October he began a year of service in the French army. He then went to Germany on a Rockefeller fellowship, studying in Berlin (until May 1931) with John von Neumann, then in Hamburg (May-June) with Emil Artin, and in Göttingen (June-July) with Emmy Noether. He left Göttingen for a vacation in the Alps and a few days later was killed in a fall at the age of twenty-three. ... Herbrand's main contribution to logic was what is now called the Herbrand theorem, published in his doctoral dissertation: it is the most fundamental result in quantification theory. Consider an arbitrary formula F of quantification theory, then delete all its quantifiers and replace the variables thus made free with constants selected according to a definite procedure. A lexical instance of F is thus obtained. Let Fi be the ith lexical instance of F: the instances being generated in some definite order. The Herbrand theorem states the F is provable in anyone of the (equivalent) systems of quantification theory if and only if for some number K the disjunction F1 V F2 V ... V Fk (now called the kth Herbrand disjunction) is sententially valid ... The Herbrand theorem establishes an unexpected bridge between quantification theory and sentential logic. Testing a formula for sentential validity is a purely mechanical operation. Given a formula F of quantification theory, one tests the kth Herbrand disjunction of F successively for k=1, k=2, and so on: if F is provable, one eventually reaches a number k for which the kth Herbrand disjunction is valid. If F is not provable, there is, of course, no such k,. and one never learns that there is no such k (in accordance with the fact that there is no decision procedure for quantification theory). Besides yielding a very convenient proof procedure, the Herbrand theorem has many applications (a field explored by Herbrand himself) to decision and reduction problems and to proofs of consistency. Almost all methods for proving theorems by machine rest upon the Herbrand theorem" (D.S.B. Vol. 6, p.297). See also Hook & Norman: Origins of Cyberspace, no. 865 for the important application by John A. Robinson of Herbrand's theorem. Van Heijenoort: From Frege to Gödel, pp. 525-581. 8vo: 239 x 169 mm. Original printed wrappers, two small pinholes in upper cover; an excellent copy. (2), 128, (2) pp. Custom cloth folding case with gilt spine lettering. Scarce.

Photograph Album from the 1930 Exposition Internationale d'Anvers in Antwerp

Album of 34 photographs from the Antwerp offshoot of the 1930 International Exposition held in Liège, Belgium, to mark the centennial of the establishment of the Belgian kingdom, depicting buildings, landmarks, and exhibition sites illuminated at night, each photograph with tissue paper overlay, the photographs unsigned and anonymous but likely by H. Climan-Ruyssers. Photographs 7-1/4" x 9-5/16", mounted to album leaves with photo corners. Oblong 8vo. Red cloth with embossed "Antwerpen 1930 Anvers" to front cover. Some minor wear along edges and spine. Antwerp (Commissie Voor de Verlichting Van de Stad Tijdens de Tentoonstelling) c. 1930. Two simultaneous exhibitions were held in Belgium from May 3 to November 3, 1930. The exhibition at Liège focused on industry and science from 1830 to 1930, while the fair in Antwerp was centered on colonial and maritime themes. This photograph album was made for the commission which supervised the illumination of the city of Antwerp and the exhibition grounds, with a signed ex-dono to the first leaf. The fair was not a great success, and is not as well documented as many of the larger international expositions.

The One Who Is Legion, or A.D.'s After-Life. With Two Illustrations by Romaine Brooks.

London: Privately Subscribed by Eric Partridge Ltd., 1930 - Octavo. Original green buckram, titles gilt to spine, top edge gilt. With the dust jacket. Minor rubbing to ends and corners, slight tanning along board edges, internally sound and clean (but for some occasional light spotting), an excellent copy in the dust jacket only faintly dust soiled and with a few faint marks, a little very light rubbing and ruffling at ends and corners. Two illustrated plates by Brooks. First edition, first impression, presentation copy fulsomely inscribed on the half-title, "To John Newbold, .and may he find treasures enough to justify a dip into these troubled and frigid pages. His old and most appreciative friend, Natalie Clifford Barney. Philadelphia, Paris, 1930. p.s. Perhaps read the note at the end of the book and even the last chapter first for enlightenment - and then go backwards at your own risk and peril! Twice warned by - N." The One Who Is Legion, a spiritual novel about suicide and reincarnation as a hermaphrodite, is the second book in English (and the only novel) of Natalie Barney (1876–1872), an American expatriate known as the "Amazon" of Paris, who was one of the most influential lesbian and feminist writers of the period. Her life inspired Radclyffe Hall's The Well of Loneliness, and her Paris salon at 20 rue Jacob was for 60 years the crucible of Left Bank culture (guests included Colette, Piere Louys, Mata Hari, Auguste Rodin, Ezra Pound, Jean Cocteau, T. S. Eliot, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Rainer Maria Rilke, Rabindranath Tagore, Nancy Cunard, Peggy Guggenheim, Caresse and Harry Crosby, Sylvia Beach, and Isadora Duncan, to name but few). Barney promoted women's writing and formed an Académie des femmes in response to the all-male Académie française, while also supporting and inspiring male writers from Remy de Gourmont to Truman Capote. She had numerous female lovers - including the illustrator of this book. This is one of 525 trade copies, from a total edition of 560. It is a scarce book already, very much so in the jacket, and rare indeed with a contemporary presentation inscription. We cannot trace Newbold for certain, but the tongue-in-cheek location of the inscription "Philadelphia, Paris", and the averral of an "old and most appreciative friend", firmly suggest a childhood friend from Barney's American past.         Vile Bodies - in the original 7'6 dust wrapper

Chapman and Hall, 1930 A first edition, first printing published by Chapman and Hall in 1930. A near fine copy with one very small name to the head of the front endpaper. Small bumps to the rear board edge. Some light wear to the spine tips. An excellent example. In a third state wrapper with a longer list of books on the rear panel for Chapman and Hall's centenary celebration with no mention of 'Vile Bodies'.         Imaginary Letters.

Paris: The Black Sun Press,, 1930. Small quarto. Original cream wappers, titles to front wrapper in black and red, Harry Crosby black sun design to rear wrapper. With the original glassine jacket. Housed in the publisher's card slipcase. Fine condition but for two tiny chips to glassine at front joint. First edition, first printing, deluxe signed limited issue, number 43 of 50 copies printed on Japanese vellum and signed by the author. There were also 350 ordinary copies issued unsigned on Navarre, and 25 hors commerce. This is an exemplary copy of the best issue. It comes from the library, with the Jack Yeats illustrated bookplate, of San Francisco poet Frederick W. Reid. Imaginary Letters is one of the exquisitely produced books put out by the Black Sun Press, founded by the wild and wealthy avante-garde expatriate couple Harry and Caresse Crosby. Harry Crosby (1898?1929) was born the heir to one of Boston's wealthiest banking families, but after serving as an ambulance driver during the First World War he met and fell in love with a married lady, Mary Peabody (nee Jacob) - they fled to Paris, married, and she changed her name to Caresse. Harry and Caresse embedded themselves in the avant-garde cultural scene, befriending the likes of Dali, Hemingway and Cartier-Bresson, founded the Black Sun Press which helped to publish the early works of Joyce, Eliot, Pound and Hart Crane, and lived a life of utter dissolution off Harry's inheritance which, when it ran out, had to be supplemented by telegrams to his banker father such as the infamous, "PLEASE SELL $10,000 WORTH OF STOCK. WE HAVE DECIDED TO LIVE A MAD AND EXTRAVAGANT LIFE", (to which the father, reluctantly but nonetheless amazingly, assented). Following Crosby's tragic death in 1929 (he was found shot dead in the same bed as Josephine, "The Fire Princess", one of his many lovers), the Black Sun Press continued issuing books in Paris and New York under the directorship of Caresse, who survived until 1970.

      - "War-ships of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck" original oilpainting on chipboard approx.40x70cm; bottom right signed; around 1930 [Dimensions of the plain wooden frame 47,5x77,5cm.] Claus Bergern was a german illustrator, marine and landscape painter, who recorded German navy actions in the two World Wars. The son of the artist Fritz Bergen, he trained at the Royal Academy in Munich under Karl von Marr. He began his career as illustrator of Karl May’s Winnetou and travel stories and in 1910 his illustrations were exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in Brussels. He travelled extensively to Norway, England, the Mediterranean and America, exhibiting and furthering his training. Appointed Marine Painter to Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1914, he made numerous dramatic paintings of U-boats and their crews. ‘The Liner Columbus at New York’ (National Maritime Museum, London) is a work painted in the United States in 1924, while ‘The Admiral von Scheer Bombarding the Spanish Coast’ (1937, Navy Memorial Museum, Washington) records German action in the Spanish Civil War. As a member of the National Socialist German Workers’ Party he worked mostly on large-scale official commissions which ceased with the war. Throughout his career he also painted smaller pictures showing sailing boats, fishing villages, harbour and coastal views, including those of Polperro in Cornwall. In 1963 he presented the President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, with ‘The Atlantic’ and the British Admiralty with the painting of Nelson’s flagship Victory.
