        Photograph inscribed

1930. Signed. ROBESON, Paul. Photograph inscribed. London, circa 1937. Vintage sepia print measures 10-1/2 by 13-1/2 inches. $1800.Vintage promotional sepia print of Paul Robeson from the 1937 British film Big Fella, with Robeson standing with hands on his hips, inscribed in blue ink, “To ‘BuddyÂ’ from ‘Paul.”Paul Robeson ‘had so many talents he made acting seem narrowÂ… He was singer, actor and public speakerÂ… Robeson could sing the works of the masters; he could play OÂ’Neill and ShakespeareÂ… testament enough that hardly anyone now would dare to fill his partÂ… [but] because there were no ‘ordinaryÂ’ black parts save for servants or ‘boys,Â… a great deal of what he did [on film] depended on offers from Britain,” such as this role in Big Fella, directed by J. Elder Wills and produced in England (Thomson, 766). A musical loosely based on the novel Banjo by Harlem Renaissance writer Claude McKay, Big Fella is set on the Marseille waterfront and stars Robeson as a wanderer hired by a wealthy English couple to find their missing son. Light edge-wear and soiling, slight loss to corners, single tape repair to verso, small faint notation in red felt pen to lower right corner. A very good photograph, scarce inscribed.

With cordial good wishes. John J. Pershing.”John Joseph “Black Jack” Pershing was the most accomplished American soldier of WWI. PershingÂ’s charismatic personality and his extensive experience in prior military initiatives had made him the logical choice to command the Allied Expeditionary Force during World War I.         Treatise on Money

1930. First Edition . KEYNES, John Maynard. A Treatise on Money. London: Macmillan, 1930. Two volumes. Octavo, original blue cloth, original dust jackets. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $7500.First edition of Keynes’ important work on monetary theory, in rare original dust jackets.""The world-wide slump after 1929 prompted Keynes to attempt an explanation of, and new methods for controlling the vagaries of the trade-cycle"" (PMM 423). ""In 1930, Keynes brought out his heavy, two-volume Treatise on Money, which effectively set out his Wicksellian theory of the credit cycle. In it, the rudiments of a liquidity preference theory of interest are laid out and Keynes believed it would be his magnum opus…[however, criticism was swift and extreme] and the Treatise led to the formation of a reading group, known as 'the circus,' composed of young Cambridge economists Richard Kahn and others… Kahn dutifully delivered reports of the Circus's discussions to Keynes, who subsequently began revising his ideas. One resulting criticism of the Treatise was that it failed to provide a theory of the determination of output and employment as a whole— a particular pertinent question given the huge amount of unemployment at the time"" (History of Economic Thought). As a result of the controversy over the Treatise on Money, and the subsequent discussions and debates that arose from it, Keynes produced his greatest work, The General Theory, which literally began a revolution in American economics. AMEX 254. Books near-fine, with a single tear to head of each spine and slight toning to spines. Rare dust jackets with expert restoration. A desirable copy.

AN EXCEPTIONAL PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM CONTAINING 220 IMAGES OF EARLY YEARS AT THE JUDSON SCHOOL IN PARADISE VALLEY, ARIZONA].

Paradise Valley, Az. [ca. 1930]. - 220 silver gelatin photographs, most 2 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches to 3 1/4 x 5 3/4 inches, with a handful of larger photographs and some smaller-format panoramas. Oblong folio. Original brad-bound album. Minor dust- soiling. Overall very good. An engaging collection of original photographs from Arizona, circa 1930. The album would seem to depict the early days of the Judson School, a well-known boarding school which opened in Paradise Valley, Arizona in 1928. It was evidently assembled by one of the students. The first photograph shows the student body of nineteen young men in coat and tie; the second shows founder and head, George Judson, and the three men who evidently constituted the whole faculty at the time. Since one of the photographs contains a joking reference to Prohibition, it would seem to date before 1933; at the same time, there are enough buildings and structures to suggest the school had been going for several years, hence our dating to circa 1930. The school prided itself on offering a vigorous outdoor life as well as regular schooling. The students are shown in various settings: tending to a camp, surveying, or on horseback in the desert (a few shots depicting a snow- covered desert). The young men are also depicted in down time: reading in chairs indoors and outdoors, playing baseball and tennis, wrestling, and roping. Also present are a good amount of photographs depicting the landscape around the area, captured while the boys were exploring the areas around Paradise Valley and Phoenix, with numerous shots of the men preparing food while out on the desert prairies. Five photographs depict a railroad derailment, and a handful capture Spanish-style buildings or Native American structures in the area, with one image of a Native American family inside a makeshift tent. There is also a group of photographs in an eastern setting, presumably the student back home. The Judson School, once in a rural desert setting, was eventually surrounded by the explosive growth of Phoenix. The owner of the school (which was always a private, for- profit endeavor) sold the land to luxury real estate developers and closed the school in 2000. A wonderful collection of photographs depicting a famous pioneering school in Arizona.

Journal de Maximo Rodriguez, premier Européen ayant habité Tahiti (Tautira). 1774-1775.

Papeete: 1930. Octavo; in the original printed wrappers, faded, but a very good copy. A very scarce book, printed by the government press in Tahiti, the first complete edition of the private journal of Maximo Rodriguez, who arrived in Tahiti in 1774 and stayed for over a year. This marks the work out as an important insight into pre-colonial Tahiti, and Rodriguez's journal is the earliest sustained reflection on Tahitian life by a European. It had previously been serialised in successive issues of the Bulletin de la Société des études océaniennes. The journal (written in Spanish but here translated) dates from the last major attempt by the Spanish government to assert their influence in the region. The voyage of the Aquila in 1772 had brought back some Tahitians to be instructed in the Catholic faith, and a second voyage of 1774 was mounted to return them to instruct their compatriots in Christianity. Rodriguez, a marine, travelled as an interpreter on this second voyage. His lengthy stay, so soon after the discovery of the islands, marks him out as one of the most important of the early European visitors, and his account is 'un document unique sur le premier séjour prolongé d'un Européen à Tahiti' (O'Reilly-Reitman).His diary, originally presented to the library of the Royal Geographical Society by no less a figure than FitzRoy of the Beagle (who had been given it by Rodriguez's daughter in 1835), was rediscovered by the Pacific historian Corney.

Warsaw: Dziewulski, 1930. A fine copy of his doctoral dissertation - a seminal work in mathematical logic (Van Heijenoort: From Frege to Gödel). "Herbrand gave early signs of his mathematical gifts, entering the École Normale Supérieure at the exceptional age of seventeen and ranking first in the entering class. He completed his doctoral dissertation in April 1929. That October he began a year of service in the French army. He then went to Germany on a Rockefeller fellowship, studying in Berlin (until May 1931) with John von Neumann, then in Hamburg (May-June) with Emil Artin, and in Göttingen (June-July) with Emmy Noether. He left Göttingen for a vacation in the Alps and a few days later was killed in a fall at the age of twenty-three. ... Herbrand's main contribution to logic was what is now called the Herbrand theorem, published in his doctoral dissertation: it is the most fundamental result in quantification theory. Consider an arbitrary formula F of quantification theory, then delete all its quantifiers and replace the variables thus made free with constants selected according to a definite procedure. A lexical instance of F is thus obtained. Let Fi be the ith lexical instance of F: the instances being generated in some definite order. The Herbrand theorem states the F is provable in anyone of the (equivalent) systems of quantification theory if and only if for some number K the disjunction F1 V F2 V ... V Fk (now called the kth Herbrand disjunction) is sententially valid ... The Herbrand theorem establishes an unexpected bridge between quantification theory and sentential logic. Testing a formula for sentential validity is a purely mechanical operation. Given a formula F of quantification theory, one tests the kth Herbrand disjunction of F successively for k=1, k=2, and so on: if F is provable, one eventually reaches a number k for which the kth Herbrand disjunction is valid. If F is not provable, there is, of course, no such k,. and one never learns that there is no such k (in accordance with the fact that there is no decision procedure for quantification theory). Besides yielding a very convenient proof procedure, the Herbrand theorem has many applications (a field explored by Herbrand himself) to decision and reduction problems and to proofs of consistency. Almost all methods for proving theorems by machine rest upon the Herbrand theorem" (D.S.B. Vol. 6, p.297). See also Hook & Norman: Origins of Cyberspace, no. 865 for the important application by John A. Robinson of Herbrand's theorem. Van Heijenoort: From Frege to Gödel, pp. 525-581. 8vo: 239 x 169 mm. Original printed wrappers, two small pinholes in upper cover; an excellent copy. (2), 128, (2) pp. Custom cloth folding case with gilt spine lettering. Scarce.

He also founded a photographic business operated by his daughter Mae Linda Talbot, who became one of the earliest documented female photographers in China. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1930 - from his 'Pastoral Symphony', three bars 4/4 in G major, beginning with the rising fifth in the bass clef, written at the top right of an attractive collection of musical quotations, nearly all signed by the composers, who are evidently associated with the famous Berliner Liedertafel (male voice choir, founded in 1884 by Adolf Zander), with, in the top left corner, a fine pencil sketch, head and neck, of Karl Friedrich Zelter (1758-1832, founder of the original Berliner Liedertafel in 1809), signed 'M. Wutzer', followed by Max Wiedemann, Director, 'Fest und klar, treu und wahr' ('Steadfast and clear, loyal and true'), the choir's motto in four parts A Major, Klaus Pringsheim, (1883-1972, from 1931 promoter in Japan of western music), 'Weh, weh, weh und weh ob Elend, Sklaverei und Not', ('Oh, oh, oh, oh, the misery, slavery and stress'), his 'Arbeitslied' ('Song of the workplace'), and by nine others, 1 side 8

[PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM DEPICTING NATIVE AND AMERICAN MILITARY LIFE IN THE PHILIPPINES DURING THE 1920s AND 1930s]

Philippines, 1930. Eighty-eight photographs of varying sizes, most approximately 3 x 5 inches. Black faux leather album, tied with cord. Photos in white corner mounts on black construction paper. With original tissue guards, of which the first three are detached and chipped. A few images slightly faded or with light soiling, but mostly clear and well developed. Very good. An outstanding album of eighty-eight photographs portraying native country life and showing scenes from the U.S. Army's Nichols Field outside of Manila during the 1920s and 1930s. The images of native Filipinos consist principally of individual and group portraits of men and women in traditional dress. There are a number of additional images showing agricultural activity, rural farm land, and animals. The second significant portion of the album contains images of Nichols Field, the American military base built near Manila in 1919. These photos depict indigenous people and American personnel in and around the airfield, along with several representations of military buildings, living quarters, army activity, airplanes, and other army matériel. A few other images of port activity and a photograph that captures an eruption of the Mayon volcano are also included. Well shot and well developed, the photographs in this album create a striking portrait of two vastly different modes of living during this period in Philippine history.

        Michael and Mary A Play

London: Chatto & Windus, 1930, 1930. FIRST EDITION PRESENTATION COPY WITH A 50 LINE MANUSCRIPT POEM. 1 vol., inscribed on the front blank endleaf "For my Darling from her Blue. I suppose you do know-" May 28th. 1930." The following two pages Milne has neatly penned and signed nine original verses, comprising a total of fifty lines, each relating to nine of the characters in his play and the actors who created the roles on the London stage. Bound in the publisher's tan/gray cloth, original printed paper spine label, chipped affecting one word, very minor rubbing to head and foot of spine and back corners, inner and outer hinges fine, minor foxing to first and last leafs otherwise internally clean and bright. PROVENANCE: The present volume was previously part of The Roy Davids Collection of Poetical Manuscripts and was originally acquired by him directly from the Milne family without any intermediate ownership. The affectionate inscription from Milne to his wife can be explained by the close of Michael and Mary; in the play the character of Michael turns to Mary, mother of their son, David, and proclaims 'I suppose you do know, Mary, that, much as I love him, I love your little finger - your funny little finger, more than all of David?', Mary gently replying 'I think I did know, Michael. You've got a funny little finger too'. Michael and Mary is considered to be one of Milne's most successful light comedic dramas and is a play about marriage, raising issues regarding law, religion, morality and illegitimacy. The play was originally staged in New York before moving to London where it opened at the St. James's Theatre on 1st February 1930 and starred Herbert Marshall and Edna Best (themselves married from 1928-40, and also the couple to whom Milne dedicated the present book) in the title roles. A year later Michael Balcon produced a film version of the play, retaining the stage cast in their roles. It was the first of Marshall and Best's co-starring talkies and was voted the third best British movie of 1932. The poem reads in part: "Michael - Rowe played nightly by a Bart Steers his way into the heart Only Michael's Marshall carriage Pulls him through that risky marriage" (the role of Michael created by Herbert Marshall) "Mary - When I hear your "Don't you dare to Touch me" I can hardly bear to Sit in silence. I am dying To burst in upon you, crying Thank you, Edna, very much. You Angel, nobody can touch you" (the role of Mary created by Edna Best) "David - When all of us are dead and gone And even Frankie Lawton's old If actors still come "off" and "on" And tickets still are bought and sold "How good".thee.will say "That fellow - can't remember nameses - "Did - you know - in that rotten play "By what's-it at the old St. James's" (the role of David created by Frank Lawton) "Inspector - The burglar, whether British born or foreign Never escapes Inspector Thatcher (Torin) If she's a female crook, Inspector Thatcher Can always be relied upon to catch her" (the role of the Inspector created by Torin Thatcher) "Price - A horrible villain was Price, I'm afraid With his record of marriages hastily made At a registry office, and vice-less And, though it sounds odd, I am bound to confess That in voice and department, in manners and dress The way that you played him was priceless" (the role of Harry Price created by D. A. Clarke Smith)

        Anacapri.
