        Moonchild / A Prologue (SIGNED)

The Mandrake Press, London 1929 - Crowley's sought-after novel, freestanding despite the "Prologue" subtitle. Two board corners peeking through the cloth, and some fraying of the blue cloth to top of spine; call this firmly bound 1929 printing "good plus." Signed "Aleister Crowley" to the blank FFE, which (like the RFE) is moderately browned. Then, UNDER his name, the author has inscribed "To Bro Benn" (though the surname trails off, could conceivably be "Bennis" or "Benson," please see scans), "Trusting he will find in these pages the truths he so richly deserves / A" (inscription ends.) The letters "leis" of the author's first name are considerably darker than the rest of his name, and the ink there has bled slightly -- presumably that part of the page was slightly damp when signed. Small, symmetrical nitrate tape marks form a rectangle around this inscription -- possibly a card or piece of paper was once taped there to protect the inscription. Additionally, another previous owner has blindstamped her seal to bottom corner of this page, reading "MDS / Library of Diane Strom." There is a film and television actress of that name, born 1933, but we have no idea if it's the same Ms. Strom. Occult fiction; two magicians battle for the body of a young woman, whom one hopes will bear an ethereal being -- the Moonchild. 335 pp., "Printed and Made in Great Britain by the Crypt House Press, Limited / Gloucester and London."         [Manuscripts]: [Volume One]: The Sambo Book; [Volume Two]: Romance of Sugar Loaf Mountain; Sambo and the Grapes; Pigs and Potato Club

Baltimore, New York. 1929-1938. Two volumes. A collection of racist dialect manuscripts by Isaac Coale, Jr. Bradbound into generic oak tag wrappers, one with the label of Isaac Coale, Jr., & Co. on the front wrap. Typed leaves (with mixed ribbon and carbon pages), with corrections in type and in pencil. Letter from Norman Vincent Peale dated in 1936 lauding the stories bound into the second volume. Signed by the author, at various places, as Isaac Coale, Sambo, or "Nigger Jim."The Baltimore (and later New York City) based Coale, Jr. wrote his book Sambo Stories which was published by Baltimore publisher Williams & Wilkins Company in 1898 with illustrations by Katharine Gassaway, predating Helen Bannerman's Little Black Sambo (which was published in England) by one year. Coale appears to have been a successful business man dealing in real estate and insurance in Baltimore, and later in "Burnrite Combustion Devices" in New York City. OCLC locates just four copies of the original 1898 printed edition. At that time, three copies are be found offered online for sale, with prices ranging between $1200 - $9500.The two volumes are as follows:1. Sambo Book by Isaac Coale. Baltimore and New York. Handwritten title page, a typed chapter list with hand-corrections, a second chapter list on the back of Isaac Coale, Jr. & Co. stationary (changing the name "Sambo" to "Lucy's Little Manservant" in each chapter), eight handwritten chapter title pages, each dated 1929, and 106 leaves of text that have been typed rectos only, plus an additional typed leaf hand-titled "Sambo's Song" and "signed" by "Sambo." Mostly clean copies with modest corrections in pencil. Although no illustrations are present, several of the chapter headings note "Illustrated by Roberta G. Glover." Our speculation is that the author was preparing a second edition which was never published. The original 1898 edition had five chapters that conform (with slight variations in title) to five of these chapters, but three of the chapters present here appear to be unique to this manuscript. The alterations on the variant chapter title lists exhibits perhaps the slightest development of racial sensitivity, changing "Sambo" to "Lucy's Little Manservant," although the character in question remains "Sambo" in the text.2. A collection of three stories. Typed leaves, heavily corrected in pencil. As follows:a. "Romance of Sugar Loaf Mountain." Typed title, with author's address in pencil, and 18 additional pages of text. Typed Letter Signed from the Rev. Norman Vincent Peale is bound in following the title page of this story. b. "Sambo and the Grapes." Handwritten title, illustration from newspaper with typed title ("Sambo and the Grapes"), and five additional typed pages, Signed in ink by "Sambo."c. "Pigs and Potato Club of Coonville, Georgia." Typed title page and four chapters, totaling another 13 pages of text typed on the verso of Isaac Coale, Jr. & Co. stationary, and Signed in pencil as both "Nigger Jim." and Isaac Coale. The final three leaves are laid in, apparently never bound with the others. The text masquerades as reports of the minutes of a black social club, reminiscent of the racist satire of The Lime-Kiln Club.Presumably a substantial amount of the material found in this manuscript is unpublished and unique. .

Shreve, Lamb & Harmon Plans for the Empire State Building's Information Desk, Basement and Foundation.

1929-1930., New York: 1929 - Architectural diagram plans for the construction of the Empire State Building. 14 items, all pencil on paper or tracing vellum, various sizes ranging from 8x13 inches to 36x48 inches. Included are 5 plot plans showing the building's outline and the surrounding streets and properties, 5 section plans of existing vaults and the machine room, 2 sub-basement plans, and the details of the pit for the refrigeration unit. Condition varies, but is generally very good; most of the plans have minor folds or tears in the margins. The freight elevator plan has some tape repairs on the reverse, but is not obtrusive. A plan showing a map of 34th and 33rd Streets has the most damage, with tears in the margin, some pieces missing, and some significant wrinkling; probably the least important plan in this collection. The 102 story landmark Empire State Building was completed in 1931 on the former site of the original Waldof-Astoria Hotel. The cost of construction was about $41 million (estimates suggest that today's cost would be close to $600 million), and was completed in less than a year and a half. The building was designed by William Lamb, of Shreve, Lamb and Harmon, whose plans are included in this collection. Considered as the "Eight Wonder of the World", when it opened, the building has had its share of notoriety, both good and bad. Suicides, a shooting on the observation deck, and even a plane crashing into it in 1945, have been part of the dark side of the building's history. However, this iconic art deco building is as popular as ever, and probably one of the busiest tourist attractions in New York City. One of the most significant parts of this architectural collection is the plan for the rather famous information desk. Other parts include plans for the sub-basement, the machine room, pit for the freight elevators and refrigeration unit, and several plans illustrating the building's outline on the surrounding streets. A unique collection of New York City history. History1900s about website.

        Flapper Sewing Sample Books

Three evocative Jazz Age sewing sample books created by 15-year-old June Schroetlin for a school course in Portland, Oregon during 1929. Each volume is carefully ordered with an index, reading lists, notes (some are in manuscript and others are printed class handouts), fabric samples with information on their uses, and laboratory records including the lengths and costs of material used in projects. Each volume contains sewing exercises which Schroetlin completed and tipped-in, including examples of attaching snaps and clasps, a variety of stitches, buttonholes, smocking, pockets, and pin tucks. One assignment sees Schroetlin clipping contemporary fashion plates and assigning them to design categories such as "repetition", "opposition", "formal balance", and "gradation". Also of interest are Schroetlin's suggestions (based on fashion plates) for outfits for various "types", such as "a sport outfit suitable for a high school school girl who is a brunette [and] is short and thin in build"; "an afternoon dress for a tea for a large elder woman whose hair has begun to turn gray"; and "a dress for myself for an informal high school dance". The workbooks were graded by hand, with the teacher making notes in red pencil regarding Schroetlin's sewing work and her aesthetic choices. These books are a wonderful historical survival, recording the fashion interests and practical education of an American teenager during the late 1920s. 3 sewing sample scrapbooks created by a schoolgirl in 1929. 33, 44, and 34 leaves. Original paper wrappers, 1 volume bound with metal rings. Fabric samples, original sewing samples, and magazine and pattern clippings tipped-in throughout. Wrappers rubbed, tanned, and spotted with some chips and short splits at the edges, leaves toned, fabric and sewing samples in fresh condition. A very good set.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Sleeveless Errand

Henry Babou and Jack Kahane, Paris 1929 - First Paris edition, with English text. Dust jacket by Maurice Kahane. [viii] 217 [3] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. "Bloody Hell" Sleeveless Errand was banned and confiscated in the U.K. soon after publication but was immediately re-published in Paris by Jack Kahane, founder of the Obelisk Press. British censors objected to the books language and its depiction of immoral and decadent youth. As Arnold Bennet (who approved of the novel) wrote in the evening Standard, "it records the chatter of a familiar type of persons who cannot express themselves at any time on any subject without employing words beginning with 'b'."This edition of Sleeveless Errand sold briskly and, as the first book he published in Paris, "set Kahane's publishing enterprise on the course it would follow until its dissolution in 1939" (Ford).Precedes the creation of the Obelisk Press by two years. Ford, Published in Paris Half cream cloth over boards; sprinkled edges. Paris bookseller's label to front pastedown. In rubbed pictorial dust jacket with a few closed tears; remnants of price sticker on spine. Near fine in very good dust jacket Dust jacket by Maurice Kahane.         Do What You Will; essays.

1929 - Garden City New York. Doubleday, Doran & Company. 1929. Crown 8vo. Original cloth; a nice, bright copy. First US edition. From the library of the actor James Cagney with his bookplate. With an interesting earlier provenance from a pencil note in the Hollywood actor Noel Madison's hand "Nat Madison Hollywood Dec 1929 from Noel Coward". Coward visited Hollywood in December 1929 "Looking back over my ten days in Hollywood made me gasp a bit and wish for a little neat brandy.I remember, chaotically, a series of dinner parties, lunch parties, cocktail parties and even breakfast parties". Noel "Nat" Madison was an American actor of stage and screen. His father was a famous character actor, Maurice Moscovitch who sent his son abroad to study in Paris, Lausanne, and London. Upon returning to the U.S. following his stage debut in Great Britain, he began an active career on the American stage, specializing in highly sophisticated characters. In 1930, he began appearing in films, most often in roles far different from the upper-class types he played on stage, mostly as gangsters and low-lifes. Madison signed up with Warner Brothers and his first two films Sinners' Holiday (1930) and Doorway to Hell (1930) coincided with the first two films to feature James Cagney. Cagney and Coward may well have also met in this flurry of socialising. It has been suggested that Coward's 1932 song Mad about the Boy was directed at the young Cagney. Do What You Will includes Huxley's essay on the new "talking" pictures, Silence is Golden, in which Huxley compares the first motion picture in which spoken dialogue is heard, 'The Jazz Singer', to a "brimming bowl of hog-wash".         A Farewell To Arms

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1929. First edition of this early Hemingway classic which established him among the American masters. Octavo, original black cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To C.G. Fox Esq. with all best wishes Ernest Hemingway Key West 1930." Opposite is a mounted photograph of Hemingway on a fishing boat with a recently caught barracuda, and is initialed "EH" in his hand. First issue and in the first state dust jacket with the reading "Katharine Barclay" in the blurb on the front flap. Very good in a bright very good dust jacket with a few small closed tears and wear to the spine. Written when Ernest Hemingway was thirty years old and lauded as the best American novel to emerge from World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse. Set against the looming horrors of the battlefield—weary, demoralized men marching in the rain during the German attack on Caporetto; the profound struggle between loyalty and desertion—this gripping, semiautobiographical work captures the harsh realities of war and the pain of lovers caught in its inexorable sweep. Ernest Hemingway famously said that he rewrote the ending to A Farewell to Arms thirty-nine times to get the words right.

Kazan . 1929 - Large 4°, [8] text pages with illustrations within text and with four full-page off-set lithographs (Very Good, uncut pages joined at the top, folds slightly fragile with tiny tears). An extremely rare magazine, issued in Tatar language in Ottoman script in Kazan, at the time in Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (today Russia), with highly decortative illustrations, printed in offset lithography by popular Tatarstan artists in Art Deco style. This rare magazine was published in 1929 in Kazan in the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (today a part of Russia), founded in 1920. The first magazine with this title was issued in 1923. The magazine makes fun of the contemporary politics and lifestyle, with highly decorative art-deco drawings by famous contemporary artists. Tha language is Tatar, written in Ottoman Turkish, accompanied with details in modern Turkish and Cyrillic. The survival rate of the early editions of the magazine is very low. We could only trace later examples in the institutions.

Opowiessc o dzwonniku z portu Jaffa. (Z autolitografjami autora).

      - Warsaw, Genethner and Wolff, [1929]. 8co. Later red cloth, front wrapper with mounted lithograph in two colours mounted on upper board; pp. [viii], 55, 7 lithographic plates in two colours by the author; edges of mounted front wrapper with a few chips, not affecting illustration, text evenly a little browned, due to paper stock; a very good copy. This is the first edition of an excessively rare Polish avantgarde book production, the first book pulication by Marian Ni?y?ski (1910-1943), a poet, playwright, painter and graphic artist, whose experimental theatre production Dolmino was closed down by the censors in 1930 in Cracow. In 1943 he was run over by a German car. The poems in The Story of the Hunchback of Jaffa Port by the teenager is considered as a masterpiece of haunting scenes depicted in very expressive language.
