Shakespeare and Company, Paris 1929 - Beckett's First Appearance in Print, as One of 12Commentators on Joyce's Linguistic Innovations. 191 x 140 mm (7 1/2 x 5 1/2"). 4 p.l., [3]-194 pp., [1] leaf (limitation, imprint). FIRST PRINTING. ONE OF 96 SPECIAL COPIES IN THE LIMITED EDITION (there was also a trade edition of 200 copies). Original printed paper wrappers designed by Sylvia Beach. Front flyleaf with ink ownership inscription of "Arthur W. Poulin / November, 1944 / San Francisco." Slocum & Cahoon, B-10. One-inch tears at top of front and bottom of rear joint, spine a little scuffed, covers with faint soiling, two small chips to fore edge of front cover, otherwise the fragile wrappers in excellent condition. Except for slight browning at edges because of paper stock, fine internally. Called by Richard Ellmann the "first apologia" for "Finnegans Wake," this is Sylvia Beach's third and last Joyce publication, the Shakespeare & Company printing of 12 studies by well-known writers dealing with Joyce's linguistic innovations in the published installments of the experimental "Work in Progress," which was to become "Finnegans Wake." The dozen writers, all of whom were supporters of the project, included Samuel Beckett, Marcel Brion, Frank Budgen, Stuart Gilbert, Eugene Jolas, Victor Llona, Robert McAlmon, Thomas McGreevy, Elliot Paul, John Rodker, Robert Sage, and William Carlos Williams. The section by Beckett constitutes his first appearance in print. There are also two letters here finding fault with the writing, one of them apparently written by Joyce himself, and there are a number of quotations from the work, including a section (on Swift and blindness) that did not make it into the final version of the novel. This special limited version is uncommonly seen for sale: ABPC lists just three copies (one of them bedraggled) in the past 20 years. FIRST PRINTING.         Our Exagmination Round his factification for incamination of Work in Progress.

1929 - By Samuel Beckett, Marcel Brion, Thomas McGreevy, John Rodker, and others. With Letter of Protest by G.V.L. Slingsby and Vladimir Dixon. London: Faber, 1929. First English edition. Pages, 194, uncut. Light blue cloth binding, gilt title on spine, in original dust jacket. A fine copy. Presentation copy inscribed by Beckett: 'For Michael Curtis Sam Beckett London June 1979.' This early critique of Joyce's final work, from twelve different angles (attributed to Joyce's two pseudonyms G.V.L. Slingsby and Vladimir Dixon), dealing with Joyce's linguistic innovations in instalments of the experimental Work in Progress. It published some ten years prior to the publication of 'Finnegans Wake', and includes a passage which was omitted from the finished novel. Part of the incentive to publish was apparently to raise funds for the perennially impecunious Joyce. Beckett's first appearance in print. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Roy Chapman Andrews: hand written & SIGNED letter by Roy Chapman Andrews "Central Asiatic Expeditions. American Musuem of Natural History"

Central Asiatic Expeditions 1928-1929 - This is a 2 page (front & back) hand written letter SIGNED by Roy Chapman Andrews (1884-1960) while he was Leader and Zoologist for the "Central Asiatic Expeditions of the American Museum of Natural History" (the date 1928 is the offical letter heading) and is dated Peking Jan 2, 1929; it is written on the paper with the same letter as from the Musuem and with names of other members; written on the full front and half of the back; THE LETTER (we have tried to translate it the best we can but some words are difficult and have put a ? mark next to words we don't quite understand): "Peking Jan 2, 1929 - Dear Mrs. Mishler - Your card has just reached me. I know how sad this time of the year is for you and you have my deepest sympathy. For me, too, Pursas? is sad- it is a day one should be with ones family & no matter how much friend do it is never the same. - Don Benedick? of Shanghai, came up to Peking to play polo with us. He ? talked so much of dear Bob- it made him seem very near to us again. It was two years ago that I spent ten days with Bob in Shanghai. No one could have done ? for me than he did - We had ? wonderful talks. I think having helpful somewhat to give ? courage ? that difficult matrssimosial trouble he was having. I have ? ? it and have learned me great lesson - charity. So many things are difficult to understand until we have experienced them - there we get our lesson. - I know first how lonely your are & words can bring but better comfort. But there is a certain comfort in knowing that ? Bob's life was short, he left a real impression belived life? He left friends who can not forget him as a man - His living made all of us a little better. So few people can say that - so many just exist & in strident? nothing. Bob gave of himself inspiringly & that is why we still love him. - I hope that you can look forward to the New Year with courage and that time will soften the loss ? it never can take away its hurt.- Ever Yours - Roy Chapman Andrews."; PROVENANCE: from Swann Galleries' "Self Sale": in July 2004 SALE # B55, lot 159; CONDITION: The letter is complete and in tack but separated at the folds; the paper has some rubbing & has some tiny nicks to edges, but overall in GOOD COND.         Writings of Mark Twain, The.

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1929. - The Stormfield EditionTWAIN, Mark. The Writings of Mark Twain. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1929.Stormfield Edition. Limited to 1,024 numbered sets. Thirty-seven octavo volumes. Title-pages printed in red and black. Photogravure frontispieces and plates (including portraits) after drawings, paintings, etc. by E.W. Kemble, Howard Pyle, Dan Beard, W.H.W. Bicknell, P. Newell, J.Allen St. John, A.B. Frost, and others.Original dark blue fine-bead cloth, gilt triple-rule border with the gilt stencil signature of Mark Twain on the front cover. Spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut. A fine set in the original pale blue dust jackets with printed paper labels on the spine. The Stormfield edition of the Writings of Mark Twain, published in 1929, is identical in every way (with the exception of Twain's signature) to the Definitive Edition which had been published by Gabriel Wells in 1922. Even the limitation of these two sets were the same, both being limited to 1,024 numbered copies. The only difference between the two editions was the addition of an inserted 'signed leaf' in the first volume of the Definitive edition. Twain had signed these leaves in 1906 in anticipation of the edition but died but died twelve years before it's publication in 1922. In fact the full cloth binding on the Stormfield edition is certainly superior to the quarter blue cloth over paper boards of the Definitive edition. The 'Stormfield' edition was named after Mark Twain's final home "The Clemens family was itinerant from 1891 until well after Olivia's death in 1904, trying out a number of houses, none of which they found ultimately congenial. Fully out of debt, Clemens decided toward the end of his life to try and recover the feeling of stability that the Hartford home represented by building another house, this time in Redding, Connecticut, where he had purchased nearly 250 acres of land in 1906. In 1907, he commissioned John Mead Howells, son of William Dean Howells, to design the house, and allowed, or perhaps even encouraged, daughter Clara to participate in planning and overseeing construction. Built on the money he earned on "Extract from Captain Stormfield's Visit to Heaven," he named the house "Stormfield" and lived there until his death in 1910. Clara sold the house many years after her father's death. When the house burned down, it's owners built a near replica, which remains in private hands." (Gregg Camfield. The Oxford Comapnion to Mark Twain, p. 267).

An interesting item and I have never seen a copy either book or wrapper listed or offered for sale at auction .This was the only Wodehouse title published by Curtiss and the book is listed in Macilvaine with a price of US$2.00 ,which seems to indicate that that there is at least another copy in wrapper but its strange that no copies have surfaced I dont know anything about The Curtiss Press but they were small and operated in the late 20's early thirties so perhaps they were taken over by another publisher .         Look Homeward, Angel

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons. 1929. First. First edition. Spine lettering worn but readable, a very good copy in worn, good only first issue dustwrapper (with the Wolfe portrait on the rear panel) lacking the bottom couple inches of the spine, with several other modest chips and tears, and several internal tape repairs. This copy is Inscribed by the author: "To Fidelia E. Stark with warmest thanks. Thomas Wolfe Oct 30, 1929." Also laid in is a four-page carbon manuscript (folded, small breaks at the folds, else near fine), unsigned, but almost certainly by Maxwell Perkins, dated April 17, 1929 entitled "Selling Points: Look Homeward, Angel by Thomas Wolfe." The "Selling Points," in the third person, recounts the editorial process in detail, and enumerates the literary wonderment of the book. A modern classic, the author's first book, and generally considered his major achievement, a breathtaking autobiographical novel. An inscribed copy, with an intriguing manuscript account of the birth of the novel. .
