[There were an additional 575 numbered copies of the English issue, published by George G. Harrap, and also signed by Arthur Rackham]. There are 12 tipped-in color illustrations, plus additional black and white illustrations, plus pictorial endpapers [all by Arthur Rackham]. White vellum binding, with gold gilt lettering and rules, top edge gilt, with the other edges untrimmed. Generally a Near Fine copy, with tight uncracked hinges. This copy also has an oversized plain paper Dust Wrapper [with the top and bottom edges folded under, but even so the Dust Wrapper is still taller than the book] that is significantly torn and somewhat chipped. Frankly, I do not know whether this Dust Wrapper was original to the book, or added at some later date [although I suspect that the latter is more likely].. Signed. First Edition Thus. Hard Cover.         The Dain Curse

An exceptional copy of Dashiell Hammet's second novel. The detective known only as The Continental Op investigates a theft of diamonds from the Leggett family of San Francisco. The plot involves a supposed curse on the Dain family, said to inflict sudden and violent deaths upon those in their vicinity. Edgar Leggett's wife is a Dain, as is his daughter Gabrielle Leggett. The novel was adapted into a CBS television miniseries in 1978 by director E.W. Swackhamer and producer Martin Poll, which starred James Coburn, Hector Elizondo and Jean Simmons.

Farlow's research on plant diseases "helped lay the foundations for a science of phytopathology. His investigations of potato rot, diseases of oranges and olives, mildews of grapes, black knot of plum and cherry, and onion smut considered the taxonomic, physiological, and pathological nature of the causal fungi. He stressed the importance of understanding fungal life cycles in order to recommend control strategies for plant diseases...Through his own collecting, purchases of collections, and the assistance of students and correspondents, Farlow built the world-renowned collection that would later bear his name. A very attractive copy from a limited edition published by the Fanfrolico Press. The accomplished translation is by Jack Lindsay, with a dedication to his brother Phillip Lindsay. Jack Lindsay founded Fanfrolico with P. R. Stephenson and John Kirtley in 1926, with much support from Norman Lindsay. The press published many de luxe editions of Jack Lindsay's translations from the classics. Here the beautifully-executed wood-engravings are by Lionel Ellis. Number 103, signed by Lindsay.

Coloured frontispiece, orange and grey title illustration and 11 enchanting full page coloured illustrations plus very pretty smaller monochrome and 2 colour illustrations all around the text in wide borders. Spine worn, discoloured and lacking some surface paper ("Bedtime Story" still visible, see image), corners slightly worn, board edges rubbed, no inscriptions, tiny graze to Dedication page with partial loss of "W", an occasional pale fingermark, page 23 has some old pencil marks on lower blank half, erased but signs still visible, tiny closed edge tear to 1 margin, 10 mm (½") chip to 1 lower inner margin with short closed tear, no loss of text or image, small split to top and bottom of centre fold on rear endpapers. Ausführlicher und freundschaftlicher Brief an den Komponisten Paul von Klenau: "[...] Von den mir bekannten Tagen Deines Wiener Sejours (ich traf Dich am 15. November im Scherchenkonzert und nahm Deine Abreise für den 15. Dezember an) von diesen 30 Tagen also war ich selbst fast 10 Tage abwesend (Essen), eine Woche krank, hatte (zum erstenmal in meinem Leben) eine öffentliche Klavierbegleitung - mit vorhergehender Gesangs-Korrepetition und Klavierüben - zu leisten, zwei Vorträge vorzubereiten, vier Tage der Wiener Staatsoper quasi zur Verfügung zu stehen (mit dem Oldenburger Korrepetitor), Vorbereitungen für die obige Reise und für Weihnachten zu treffen; und die Zwischenzeit mit Briefschreiben und Telefonieren und Stundengeben auszufüllen. Und da spreche ich nur von mir. Auch Dir ist es in diesen 30 Tagen nicht anders ergangen. Jedenfalls wäre es ein Wunder gewesen, wenn die paar Stunden der Muße, die uns beiden vielleicht gerade noch geblieben sind, so auf die Minute zusammen gefallen wären, daß wir sie zusammen hätten verbringen können [...] Anbei findest Du lieber Paul eine Liste, die meine Bruchstücke betrifft, Ich habe die Partitur eben durchgeblättert in der Absicht, Dir darüber vielleicht ein oder die andere Bemerkung (aus meinen Erfahrungen heraus) zu sagen. Und sehe nun, daß es ein ganzer Haufen geworden ist: Druckfehler, neue Retouchen und kleine Unklarheiten in dem, was ich gewollt habe. Ich habe sie stückweise im Telegrammstil angeführt: möchte aber jetzt hinzufügen, daß ich Dich bitte bei jedem einzelnen Punkt bitte, ihn zu berücksichtigen. Du mögest also überall lesen statt etwa: Takt so und so mf! richtig: bitte mf! Und es ist klar daß dieses bitte auch unausgesprochen ein Danke zur Folge hat. Ãœberflüssigerweise hab ich mich auch über die Sprechstimmbehandlung ausgelassen. Ich hab ja ganz vergessen, daß in den Gurreliedern auch ein Sprecher vorkommt, Du also längst vollauf und aus eigenster Erfahrung orientiert bist [...]".
