Das Blumenbuch (Volumes I - III)

[Mainzer Presse, 1929-1930], [Mainz, Germany] - The idea for this work came from a trip Rudolph Koch took in Germany with his young children to gather wildflowers; he drew them, and then enlisted the help of his friend Fritz Kredel to make woodcuts from his drawings (from A Century for the Century by Hutner and Kelly). "Fritz Kredel learned his trade as assistant to Rudolph Koch, in Offenbach during the 1920's; by the time he left Germany he was a celebrated illustrator. The woodcut and pen and ink were his preferred mediums, and one of his masterpieces -- in collaboration with Koch -- was 'Das Blumenbuch' (''The Flower Book'') of 1929-30, for which Kredel cut more than 250 color flower illustrations in wood. Woodcuts, he felt, had a crispness and sharpness that could not be achieved in any other medium" (from a NY Times review of Centennial Exhibit of Kredel's work). The woodcuts were then hand-colored by Emil Wollner. ***DESCRIPTION: All text in German; each volume contains hand-colored plates printed on the rectos only, with each page displaying one flower, some arranged by season ("From Winter to Early Spring" and so on) or locale ("In the Meadow", etc); Table of Contents at the rear, a total of 250 plates between the three volumes. Limited edition of 1000 copies, unnumbered (which followed a special edition of only 20 copies); 12" tall. ***CONDITION: All three volumes in near fine condition with light wear to the head of the spines, some rubbing to one corner, and a very light, stray mark on the front of Volumes I and III. Volume II has duplicate plate numbers 167-170 bound in, no plates missing. Lacking slipcases. ***CITATION: A Century for the Century no. 20. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply, please contact seller for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Eigenh. Brief m. U.

Villeneuve, 4. II. 1929. Vous voulez bien me parler d’Ernest Tharaud.

US Steel Products Company Aerial Tramway Photograph Collection, Circa 1900-1935

Very Good with no dust jacket. Ephemera. A collection of photographs and negatives from the US Steel Products Company that constructed aerial tramways in the early 1900s. The photographs are in envelopes labeled by company, with over 70 operations listed, mostly mining and logging companies, some still in existence today. Also included is a set of indexed file cards of potential clients spanning several decades. The cards list the status of tramway projects, records of sales catalogs mailed out, and other information on sales leads. A separate folder contains several more prints and three postcards of European people-moving tramways, postmarked at the Hotel Astoria, Leipzig, 1929. The postcards are from M. P. Morrison, who filed a 1929 patent application related to tramways. The photo envelopes contain a mix of full-size negatives and prints, generally good and sometimes excellent in quality and contrast, in very good condition, mostly 3"x5". Some contain brief content notes, notes and labels written on the negatives, or dates. Non-tramway photograph subjects are also interspersed throughout the collection, with people and historic buildings from the mining town of Weaverville, California and Eagle, Fortymile, and Seldovia in Alaska, hikers at the tops of Mount Baldy and Mt. Hood in the Cascades, and women at the Rawley Mine in Colorado. Other scenes show tree jacks on giant trees, men loading ore buckets and moving lumber, men shoveling in deep snow trenches for the Crown Willamette Paper Company tramway, and men on horses. There are many well-composed machinery shots with good contrast in addition to many, many tower and tram line views, with close-ups of the tramway engineering details and the wire rope used. US Steel worked with the Trenton-Bleichert design for aerial tramways, on systems often many miles long on steep grades. This collection provides an in-depth look at these massive engineering projects as well as a personal glimpse of the people of the lumber camps and mining towns. ; .

Autograph Quotation signed ("Benghabrit"). In French, signatures in French and Arabic.

Paris., 22. V. 1929. - Folio. 1 page. On uncut wove paper, bearing the Schoellers-Parole blind embossed seal, margins uncut. The original autograph contribution of Si Kaddour Benghabrit to the Committee of the World League for Peace (Ligue Mondiale pour la Paix), a remarkable organization formed in 1925 with close ties to the League of Nations. The Committee itself was composed of such notaries as Queen Elizabeth of Belgium, King Carol II of Romania, John D Rockefeller, Marie Curie, and Albert Einstein, who personally gathered the present manuscripts over the course of seven years (1925-32). Among the public figures who contributed to the project were dignitaries from the newly-created League of Nations' member states. "Rebellion sleeps in the heart of man, may he be cursed who awakens it'. Thus spoke our Prophet. This is still the living doctrine of modern Islam. How could it not prefer the pure and simple joys of peace to the torments and dark nights of war! [Signed] Benghabrit". Si Khaddour Benghabrit rose to prominence under the French regime in Morocco . He is also remebered for his courage in saving the lives of the many Jews during the Second World War by disguising them as Muslim members of his Paris mosque - somewhere between 500 and 1600 people were saved from deportation in this way, and the Medal of Justice has been awarded to the descendants of Benghabrit by the Yad Vashem Memorial. Pax Mundi.

The Brook Kerith. A Syrian Story with twelve engravings by Stephen Gooden

London: William Heinemann Ltd, 1929. With the full set of 12 signed proofs. Extremely rare.. First illustrated Edition. No.251 of 375 copies, signed by Moore and Gooden. 12 original copper engravings (nine full-page). Tall 8vo, original full vellum, gilt lettering on spine, unopend and untrimmed, in the original card slipcase. Large folio, in the original brown buckram portfolio lettered in gilt on the upper cover. All in fine condition. In 1913 the important Irish author George Moore (1852-1933) journeyed to Jerusalem to research background for his novel The Brook Kerith. This book is based on the supposition that a non-divine Christ did not die on the cross but was nursed back to health and eventually travelled to India to learn wisdom which obviously embroiled Moore in considerable controversy." Moore importance was huge. According to Richard Ellmann he heavily influenced Joyce and is often referred to as the first great modern Irish novelist. Obviously of the greatest rarity and in extremely good condition.
