The Love Parade [Parade d'amour] (Original photograph of the US premiere of the film in New York, 1929)

Cliff Leary, N.p. 1929 - Vintage sepia photograph of the world premiere of the landmark 1929 film, at the legendary Criterion Theatre in New York. Shot by photographer Cliff Leary, with his stamp on the verso, as well as a numeric reference number (6434), and the stamp of a Scandanavian press agency (Københavnerinden).A huge hit for Paramount in 1929, a comforting fact for the studio given that it was released just after the Wall Street crash. The great Ernst Lubitsch's first talking film, the film debut of Jeanette MacDonald, the American debut of Maurice Chevalier. Too "The Love Parade" is considered by many to be the first musical film in which songs were integrated with story, and the first to make innovative first use of music with no image at the end of the film. Finally, a wonderful example of the kinds of magnificent physical artwork that would routinely go into major premieres at the beginning of the talking era.8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm). In an archival mat. Very Good, with faint creasing and light wear at the corners. Hirschhorn, p. 32.

The Red Letter New Testament: Translated out of the Original Greek; and with the former Translations diligently Compared and Revised, by His Majesty's Special Command

London & New York: Collins' Clear-Type Press, n.d. (1929?). Very good antiquarian condition. 358, [2] p. (last 2 pages blank). Illustrated throughout with color illustrations. Bound in original quarter brown morocco, wooden boards with an overlay of approximately 100 pieces of mother-of-pearl arranged ornamentally: central panel enclosing a five-pointed star on upper cover, on lower the Jerusalem Cross. One piece of mother-of-pearl lost from the upper corner of lower board, another slightly damaged on front cover. An extremely elaborate mother-of-pearl binding on the "Red Letter Testament," possibly bound in Jerusalem. For no apparent reason, the foot of the spine is stamped "Jerusalem," the upper cover bears the Star of David, and the lower cover bears the ornamental design of the Jerusalem Cross. These clues suggest that the volume was bound in Jerusalem, not London or New York. Certainly it is unlikely that a London or New York binder would have utilized wooden boards. A brilliant specimen.

Photo album of New York's "Roaring Twenties". New York, 1928-1929.

1929. 175 b/w prints, mainly c. 83 x 57 mm. Mounted on black cardboard in oblong folio (335 x 250 mm) leather album. Marbled endpapers. Fine collection of travel snapshots, taken between summer 1928 and summer 1929, showing off New York during the last months of the Roaring Twenties, not long before the Crash of October 1929. Meticulously captioned in Swedish, the series begins with an atmospheric early-morning view of New York harbour as seen from the deck of the "Kungsholm". This is followed by photos of the New York skyline, steamers on the Hudson, bathing scenes in Central Park, the newly-built Kensico Dam near White Plains, various street scenes (showing streetcars, city-buses, the elevated Manhattan Railway, Manhattan Bridge, advertisements, motorcars, pedestrians on 5th Avenue, etc.), views of architecture and shots taken from skyscrapers, Columbia University, and Long Island. The photos include portraits not only of the travellers, but also of the hotel personnel, people bathing in Atlantic City, and a black nanny. Events captured in snapshots include a Belmont Park horse race on May 25, 1929, and the funeral parade held on July 18, 1928, in honour of the crashed pilot Emilio Carranza (the "Mexican Lindbergh"). Gustaf Schult, the principal photographer of the series (and occasionally depicted therein), was a member of the Swedish Chamber of Commerce. - Includes four issues of the on-board journal of the TS Drottningholm published for the Göteborg-New York journey (June 12-18, 1928) as well as the passenger list of the MS Kungsholm during Schult's return from New York to Göteborg in June 1929.

        Eigenh. Manuskript (Fragment). O. O. u. D.

1929. 2 SS. auf 2 Bll. Gr.-4to.

Autograph letter signed ("Moritz"). Vienna, 7. I. 1929.

1929. Large 8vo. 5 pp. Important letter to his friend, the actress Gerda Tardel: "[...] I am again severely burdened with unpleasant tasks, especially scientific correspondence and reading dissertations, and I am thereby hampered in developing my own thoughts. But that makes no difference: I do manage to finish the really important things, and the more I encounter the true brilliance of genius, the less importance I attach to the normal professorial productions. In the meantime, a long-planned project, a series which I would like to edit and which I hope will achieve nothing less than a revolutionary reform of philosophy, is getting under way [...]". - Together with Philipp Frankl, Schlick was soon to introduce the "Schriften zur wissenschaftlichen Weltauffassung", which he would go on to edit until his death.

        Team First

Appleton, 1929 A very rare 1929 first edition in dust jacket, of this important work of baseball fiction. There is no copy of this book listed for sale on ABE, with or without a dust jacket. An expert estimates that Appleton published less than 1,000 copies of each of these titles, which would account for its rarity. This copy is in fine condition, in a very good dust jacket which still has the original price of $1.75 on the front flap. A few small pieces of tape on the inside of the jacket but not visible on the outside. Silvers also wrote the Dick Arnold series and was dean of men at Rutgers. Comes in a custom-made collector's slipcase.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good.

Loose sheets. Custom red half morocco clamshell box. Models for Connett's edition of 21 copies with hand colored plates. Comprising 35 [of 68] engraved plates, proofs after letters, after the original paintings by Stubbs, Herring, Hall, Sartorius, and others, colored by hand, most marked "Approved WW" in ink or pencil in margins, with occasional notes to the colorists. 1 vols. 7 x 10 inches. Colorists' Models for the rare colored issue of 'Cherished Portraits'. "This was Connett's first major work in fine book production. It was contracted through Ernest Gee, and Mr. Woodward spared no expense ..." (Siegel, p. 52). The idea had come to Mr. Woodward, whose Belair Stables bred some of the greatest racehorses of the 1920s and 1930s, to do a book about the portraits he owned after listening to Mr. Vosburgh regale him with stories about them one Sunday afternoon. The portraits include Stubbs' 'Godolphin Arabian' and a vast stable of paintings by Herring Senior, racing scenes, and other works. "The twenty-one copy edition of Cherished Portraits of Thoroughbred Horses is one of the rarest works of its kind in America. ... It was Connett's most amibitious project, and if produced today would easily cost several thousand dollars per copy" (Siegel, p. 174).Unique survival of the production process for one of the great American sporting books of the interwar years, and a testament to Woodward's close involvement with the book. For published book: Podeschi 373; Siegel 22; Frazier V-4-D; Decade p. 67. Provenance: Eugene V. Connett, 3d; Don Frazier
