        MUGGINS, THE COW HORSE

[Denver: Welsh-Haffner Printing Co., 1928]., 1928. First edition. 8vo. Stiff wrappers, label pasted on front cover. 110 pp., preface, illustrated, portraits, Muggins was an unusual cow horse that was supposedly saddle-broken by the notorious Tom Horn. Many references to cattle drives, trails, and cattle companies. Charming account of the approximately 38-year life of a horse trained in Wyoming and put out to pasture in California. Inked gift inscriptions on the title page passing this book through a family from 1941 and 1969. Laid-in is a four-page printed flyer titled HORSE SENSE! by Muggins. The brochure was printed in 1928, a few days after the horse's death and written as if dictated by him, it argues against California Initiative No. 21, with restrictions that would legislate out of existence all of the color and romance that goes with rodeos, horse shows, horse races at fairs, polo games, making of western pictures for the screen, circuses and similar. Photograph of author Charles Camp on Muggins on cover of the flyer. A rare book with a rare brochure. Fine copy of a scarce item. An exceptional copy.

        Legend of Sleepy Hollow, The

Philadelphia: George G. Harrap & Co., 1928. - Arthur Rackham Awakens Sleepy Hollow[RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. IRVING, Washington. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. Philadelphia: David McKay Company, [1928].Limited to 250 numbered copies for England and 125 copies for the United States. This un-numbered and unsigned copy being one of the 125 for the US. Quarto (10 3/16 x 8 inches; 262 x 203 mm.). 102, [1], [1, blank] pp. Eight mounted color plates and thirty drawings in black and white. Publisher's vellum boards gilt lettered and ornamented, with gilt vignette. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. A fine copy, partially uncut.By 1928, the traditional Rackham book - freely and lavishly illustrated, and lushly produced - was, culturally no longer in fashion nor financially feasible. Artistically, Rackham's work was being overshadowed by a younger generation. Publisher George Harrap stepped in, took up the challenge, and, through production economies, published a new kind of Rackham book. But if the volumes were not as spectacular as in the past, the artwork was no less impressive.Latimore and Haskell, pp. 63-64. Riall, pp. 164-165.

Meistergeigen aus dem Besitz von Emil Hermann. 1926 - 27. (und:) Rare Violins Meistergeigen Emil Hermann. 1927 - 28. 2 Bände.

Berlin - New York, (1928/1929).. Quer-Quart. 49 nn. Bll. (Katalog 1926 - 27); 57 nn. Bll. (Katalog 1927 - 28).

"Malweibern".
