        The Walls of Jericho

New York: Alfred A. Knopf. 1928. First. First edition. A slightly cocked, else very good or better copy in a fair example of the iconic and rare Aaron Douglas-illustrated dustwrapper with several chips and tears. The author's satiric first novel, set in the dance-halls, cabarets, and pool parlors of Harlem, is a highspot of the Harlem Renaissance and very seldom encountered in jacket. Dr. Fisher, as well as being one of the most promising of the Harlem writers, was also a successful X-ray specialist. He died in 1934 at age 37, of cancer caused by his exposure to radiation. .

Conyngham Mallory & ornamented with thirteen original engravings from the Jouaust Edition of 1881 by Edmond H?douin. New York: Brentano's, 1928. First edition thus. A near fine set.Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712 - 1778) was one of the most influential thinkers during the Enlightenment in eighteenth century Europe. The Confessions is an autobiographical book by Jean-Jacques Rousseau. In modern times, it is often published with the title The Confessions of Jean-Jacques Rousseau in order to distinguish it from Saint Augustine's Confessions. Covering the first fifty-three years of Rousseau's life, up to 1765, it was completed in 1769, but was not published until 1782, four years after Rousseau's death, even though Rousseau did read excerpts of his manuscript publicly at various salons and other meeting places.

        Gambado on Horseback

n.p, n.d, ca. 1928 - A preliminary study for the plate "The Dray Horse makes a Noble Hunter" for An Academy for Grown Horsemen, by "Geoffrey Gambado" (Sir William H. Bunbury), published by Wm. E. Rudge, Mt. Vernon, NY, 1929. Gordon Ross (1873-1946) was a prolific artist, working mostly in watercolor, from his early days in his native Scotland. As a book artist he tackled everything from Dickens to Shakespeare, including a number of titles for The Limited Editions Club. He is also noted for his sporting work, which included illustrations for The Derrydale Press, Surtees's Jorrocks Jaunts and Jolities, and several large prints of notable sportsmen, including Sir Thomas Lipton, Hugo Meynell, Peter Beckford, and Surtees himself. The eminent collector A. Edward Newton, who wrote the introduction to the Surtees edition, praised Ross in his book End Papers: "No one now living in Great Britain and doing work in his line can compare with Gordon Ross, now living in New York.He has no living superior; I doubt if he has his equal for the very quality needed to illustrate a humorous classic." A superb draftsman, with a gift for portraiture, Ross's work has an ingratiating quality of lively elegance; his originals very seldom come on the market Image 10 x 11 inches; matted and framed to 17 x 17 inches overall. Pen, crayon and watercolor illustration.

The author's first solely-authored volume of poetry inscribed in the year of publication with a very a significant association. Shortly after Tate began a relationship with his soon-to-be wife Caroline Gordon, they moved to "Robber Rocks," a house in Patterson, New York, with friends Slater and Sue Brown, Hart Crane, and Cowley. Cowley was one of the few reviewers who understood the seeming contradictions in Tate's thought and writing, those stemming from his overlapping identities as a Catholic, a Southern Agrarian, and a man of letters. Despite admitting that "it almost seems that his essays are being written by three persons, not in collaboration but in rivalry," he nonetheless conceded, "I doubt that any other poet in this country is a better judge of his contemporaries than Allen Tate" (quoted in Thomas A. Underwood, Allen Tate: Orphan of the South, Princeton UP, 2000; p. 237). .

A remarkably fresh, clean, and exceptionally fine copy in the original color pictorial dust jacket."The text is printed on a poor and brittle paper, so it is a difficult title to find in good condition" (Riall)."There is no more famous illustrator of children's books in the entire world than Arthur Rackham. Indeed, there are many people who make a point of buying every Rackham book regardless of subject, merely for the sake of the pictures. For, unlike that of many illustrators, Mr. Rackham's work appeals equally to the child and the adult, delighting the young reader by its whimsical humor and multitude of perfectly executed details, and adults by its beauty and artistry. In 'The Lonesomest Doll' Mr. Rackham has found an unusually appealing theme, and he has contributed a series of thirty-one of his unique illustrations (four in color), making a volume that should take its place as one of the finest gift books of the year. Miss Brown's charming story of the proud little queen and her beautiful lonesome doll has held a place for many years among the favorite books of the younger readers, and this new and beautiful edition should make it many new friends."
