        Official R.E. Byrd Globe

George F. Cram & Co., Indianapolis - This wonderful commemorative globe was editioned to celebrate Richard E. Byrd's historic Antarctic expedition of 1928-1930. In 1929, Byrd launched his famous flight to the Pole, becoming the first explorer to reach the South Pole by air, an accomplishment that earned him a Congressional Medal of Honor. A key on the continent lists Byrd's 1929 trip along with the journeys of his predecessors: Roald Amundsen, in 1911, and Robert Falcon Scott in 1912. As many historians have since reattributed the first verifiable claim to the South Pole to Amundsen, this commemorative globe is now a historical artifact in more ways than one. Other notable geographic features of the interwar period include the puppet state of Manchuria, French Indochina and French West Africa, and Italian Somaliland. The globe is colored with a muted glue-green for oceans and yellow for land. Nautical distances are marked in red. An Analemma scale in the south Pacific indicates the sun's declination and the equation of time for every day of the yeas. Some general light crackling and soiling to gores, a couple small scratches with paper loss, some light wear to stand. After serving in the Union army, George F. Cram (1842-1928) joined his uncle's map business and later established his own engraving and publishing firm in Chicago in 1869. As the city grew in significance as a transit hub, area publishing firms incorporated new railway routes that ran through the city into increasingly detailed and elaborate renderings of the country. Cram was especially regarded for his use of cerography, an innovative wax-engraving printing technique, that allowed for large-scale maps that could be easily a and efficiently updated. In the 1930s, the business moved to Indianapolis and began making globes, for which they are still known today. This globe exemplifies its work. Tabletop globe. 12 inch diameter. 18 inches tall including decorative cat-iron and turned wood stand on circular base. 12 chromolithograph gores. Circular overlabel in South Indian Ocean, signed below label. Some general light crackling and soiling to gores, a couple small scratches with paper loss, some light wear to stand.

        PETER PAN

1928. Or The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up. London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1928. Original blue-grey cloth with cover and spine labels, with dust jacket. First Edition of Barrie's famous play featuring Peter Pan and Tinker Bell, the Darling children and Nana, and of course Captain Hook and Smee. "Peter Pan" first turned up as a relatively minor character in Barrie's 1902 novel, THE LITTLE WHITE BIRD. Then in December 1904 this play was first produced, but it was not published until 1928, as this volume in "The Uniform Edition of The Plays of J. M. Barrie." (In the interim, 1911 to be specific, Barrie wrote a narrative version which was published as the book PETER AND WENDY.)~Included in this book is Barrie's 29-page Dedication "To the Five" in which he relates how, decades earlier, he had created (with their help) Peter Pan. Although he identifies them here only as #s 1 through 5, these were the five sons of Arthur and Sylvia Llewelyn Davies, with whom Barrie (according to a biographer) was "obsessed." The boys' names were George, John, Peter, Michael and Nicholas, and in the play they appear as George (the father) Darling, John Darling, Peter Pan, and Michael Nicholas Darling.~This volume is in fine condition; the dust jacket is near-fine, with one shallow chip at the foot of the spine and very light soil. Cutler pp 200-201.

Pervaia liubov’. Roman. Perevod s angliiskogo Very Gorovskoi [First Love. A Novel. Translated from the English by Vera Gorovskaya].

[Kiev:] Izdatel’stvo „Kul’tura“ Gostresta „Kiev-pechat’“ 1928 - First edition in Russian of First Love (1928), in which Wadsley ‘does herself proud with a fair-haired vamp who is quite prepared to let her lover hang rather than confess he was (innocently enough) in her bedroom at the time of a murder. However, he escapes from prison, and (Miss Wadsley’s readers will be relieved to hear) from the vamp’ (Sunday Times, 1 Apr. 1928). It appears Wadsley (1885–1959) was popular with the reading public in the early Soviet Union, and her works were translated very quickly; the National Library of Russia catalogue shows dozens of editions of her works (1920s), with some being reprinted as recently as the 1990s. Not in WorldCat. 8vo (172 × 127 mm), pp. [3]–217, [3]; scattered spotting/staining throughout, old repairs to the fore-margins of pp. 214 and 216, private ownership stamps to title; old cloth, front cover of the original illustrated wrappers laid down.
