XIV, S. 462).

1928. Trial proof of a print issued in a very small edition. Drypoint etching, noted "Trial Proof" and inscribed by the artist in pencil lower right. 1 vols. 7 x 10 inches (plates size). Framed and glazed. Uniform browning of sheet. Trial proof of a print issued in a very small edition. An interesting and dynamic polo scene by Paul Brown, depicting a player about to swing his mallet, defending the goal against two opponents. Biscotti writes of the rarity of Brown's etchings, and that many of them "were probably done in very limited editions, as the only examples seen were those in the possession of the family". Biscotti records that the Polo etchings he lists were seen only as reproductions in Polo magazine for September 1928. Inscribed by the artist to his publisher, "To Eugene V. Connett, sincerely, Paul Brown." A fine sporting association and a rare print. Biscotti, Paul Brown, Master of Equine Art, p. 119. Provenance: Eugene V. Connett III; his son, Eugene V. Connett IV

2pp Signed Letter on polio and muscular atrophy to Morris Fishbein (editor of the AMA Journal) on Fidelity and Deposit Company of Maryland Letterhead (February 20, 1928)

1928. Very Good. Typed two page letter on Fidelity and Deposit Company of Maryland signed (with full name) by Franklin D. Roosevelt with handwritten postscript, 8 paragraphs plus 5 lines of handwritten postscript. This letter (dated February 20, 1928) is addressed to Dr. Morris Fishbein regarding the effect of exercising in warm springs (primarily the findings of a Dr. Hubbard and the Trustees of the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation) on infantile paralysis aka polio (from which Roosevelt famously suffered). The pages have been folded, three hole punches along the lefthand margin of both pages which have been torn, small orange stain to first page, a staple has been removed from the upper lefthand corner. Very Good. Fishbein had made a name for himself as exposer of quack doctors and was the longtime editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association. Since FDR was intensely interested in possible cures and therapies for polio, this is an important letter illustrating his deep commitment to medical advancement along these lines. 'Our own work at Warm Springs seems to prove rather definitely that the affected muscle groups gain more rapidly when given exercises under water than the same grups do when given exercises on tables in the open air...' His handwritten remarks at the end are directed at Fishbein's inclination to characterize health spas and resorts in dubious terms. 'My only kick was about your telling people that advertising literature was being circulated for the 'resort' and that the 'thing' was evidently a 'kind of promotion' -- of course none of these happen to be true!'

Sehr selten komplett angeboten.

[Scrapbook and Photo Album]: Islip High School Sports

Islip, New York. 1928-1930. Quarto. String-tie album with black cloth boards, gilt stamped "Scrap Book" on the front with 50 leaves. Very good with the front board detached but present and the pages moderately tone. A scrapbook and photo album concerned with two years of basketball, baseball, and track at Islip High School on Long Island, New York, 1928-1930, all dealing with the sporting activities of star basketball center and baseball pitcher Frank Sindler. Islip, NY, 1928-1930. The albums contains 15 gelatin silver photographs, newspaper clippings, including game recaps, box scores, previews of upcoming matches, feature stories, etc., along with event programs, a broadside announcement of a game, photographs of Sindler's coach and teammates, letters of recommendation from his high school principal and teachers, cloth letters or patches, particpant numbers, etc. The final few leaves hold similar material regarding the fall semester of Sindler's freshman year at Alfred University where he was on the football team. Sindler was clearly a star on the Islip High School basketball and baseball teams his junior and senior seasons, frequently leading the basketball team in scoring and turning in a no-hitter among his many wins for the baseball team; he went on to study at Auburn University, became an architect, and lived for decades designing buildings in Pensacola, Florida. A detailed look at New York high school sports, through the eyes of one participant, in the opening years of the Great Depression. .

Archive of 22 autograph letters signed to David W. Nevins of New York City

Moscow, 1928-1930. Substantial and revealing collection of correspondence from a young VOKS aparatchik to one David W. Nevins, proprietor of a New York travel agency called "The Open Road," through which he organized educational and cultural tours to the Soviet Union. Schlossberg, a Moscow University student who (we deduce from context) made her living in the summers as a tour guide and English, apparently befriended Nevins on one of his earlier trips to Moscow, when she served as his interpreter. In this group of letters, written over a roughly two-year period, we witness a young woman of the first Revolutionary generation speaking enthusiastically, even effusively, about her appreciation for the New Russia and also of her enthusiasm for the United States (she longs to visit New York City), its language (she repeatedly requests from Nevins the gift of an English slang dictionary), and especially its literature, which she receives in regular installments from her correspondent and which she devours at an impressive rate. Though the content of the letters is seldom straightforwardly political, they do give an excellent idea of life in Moscow in the decade following the Revolution, and especially of the comparative openness of East-West relations prior to the Second World War. Nevins and Schlossberg maintain a lively correspondence and frequently trade gifts of books and magazines. Among the many publications Schlossberg sends thanks for are The New Masses (in which Nevins apparently advertised his travel agency); a large collection of the Haldeman-Julius Little Blue Books; Michael Gold's Jews Without Money; and several works by John Dos Passos, whom Schlossberg regards as the greatest American novelist. Schlossberg also mentions meeting, in her capacity as tour guide, a number of American leftist luminaries including Robert Minor, William Gropper, Dos Passos and Scott Nearing. As noted by Ludmilla Stern in her Western Intellectuals and the Soviet Union 1920-1940 (Oxford: 2007) the years 1928-29 were momentous ones not only for the Soviet Union in general but especially for VOKS, the international cultural bureau for which the young Ms. Schlossberg worked. After Lenin's death attitudes towards foreigners in Russia grew increasingly suspicious; tour groups from the West came under greater and greater scrutiny, and we suspect it is no accident that Schlossberg's correspondence ends in 1930, the period of Stalin's consolidation of power and of an increasingly belligerent Russian stance towards the United States. As for biographical material on Schlossberg and Nevins, neither appears to have left much of a trace; we find no record in the Googleverse of Nevins's travel agency, and the only reference we find to Schlossberg is in a footnote to a 1999 scholarly article on the development of the Soviet propaganda publication USSR in Construction, where she is identified as still working for VOKS in 1931. Twenty-two manuscript letters, all but two with original stamped mailing envelopes, together with related ephemera including one small photographic print, several negatives, and three printed items. Text in (nearly flawless) English. Most letters 3-4pp (ca 300-500 words) on folded stationery, a few pieces with printed letterhead of the 2nd Moscow State University. Expected tears to mailing envelopes; occasional soil or fading to letters; generally Very Good or better.

        Lady Chatterley's Lover.

Florence Privately Printed by the Tipografia Giuntina directed by L. Franceschini 1928 - First edition, number 572 of 1,000 copies only, signed by the author, Royal 8vo., superbly bound in full maroon morocco, bespoke gilt spine, Japanese endpapers, top edge gilt and others untrimmed as published. An exceptionally clean and possibly unread copy in a very handsome modern binding. This novel shines as an example of Lawrence's finite skill in conveying the nature of relationships and his use of characters to communicate his personal philosophy. His depiction of love-making (seen as shocking at the time) and the intimacy and sense of touch derives from his wish to restore an emphasis on the body and balance it with what he perceived to be Western civilisation's over-emphasis on the mind. Lawrence's writing and opinions earned him many enemies, censorship and misrepresentation of his creativity, which was his reflection on the dehumanising effects of modernity and industrialisation, while also exploring issues such as emotional health, vitality, spontaneity and instinct. To avoid British censorship and certain prosecution, this edition of Lady Chatterley's Lover was published privately in Florence therefore not only is it the first edition but the first unexpurgated edition, which would not be seen in the U. K. until 1960. Even then, the publisher, Penguin stood trial under the Obscene Publications Act of 1959, in which one of the objections was to the frequent use of the word 'fuck'. The prosecution was ridiculed for being out of touch with changing social opinions, particularly when the Chief Prosecutor, Mervyn Griffith-Jones asked if it were the kind of book 'you would wish your wife or servants to read.' The jury was less prudish and acquitted Penguin on all charges. Roberts A42, Connolly 57. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Einstein writes to Reichenbach (1891-1953), a colleague and important expositor of Relativity, to suggest to him a clearer way of explaining one aspect of his theory. He opens the letter by saying (in translation): "I think the logical presentation that you give of my theory is indeed possible, but it's not the simplest one." After providing a list of four possibilities for "increasing specialization regarding the distant comparison of vectors" he comments: "Of course one can also start with an affine connection and specialize either by introducing a metric or by introducing integrability conditions; i.e. do it the way you did. But this is less simple, less natural." He goes on to assert that "[t]he naturalness of the field of structure envisaged by me seems indisputable to me. I will only know in a few months whether this construction contains deeper traits of reality; for the problems needed to be solved to make this decision are not at all easy." The letter ends with a postscript in Einstein's hand, inviting Reichenbach and his wife to tea, noting "Schrödinger is supposed to come as well."

The Voiage and Travaille of Sir John Maundevile Knt. Which treateth of the Way to Hierusalem; and of Marvayles of Inde, with other Ilands and Countreyes

New York: Printed at San Francisco, by Edwin and Robert Grabhorn for the Random House, 1928. One of only 150 copies, this no.30. 31 illustrations by Valenti Angelo plus 34 initials and numerous paragraph marks illuminated by hand also by Angelo which were copied from early books and manuscripts. Printed in Rudolf Koch's Gothic type. Folio, binding of wooden boards, skilfully rebacked by Sangorski in morocco (which has been slightly rubbed at the bottom), generally a very good copy. In terms of design and execution, this is thought by many to be the most desirable book of the Press, especially with its content of Mandeville's early guide for Holy Land pilgrims which takes us through Turkey, Persia, India, Egypt &c. Bernard Cerf certainly approved - the Grabhorns had intended to sell all 150 themselves but when Cerf saw the proofs he bought the entire edition for Random House. Booklabel of Clarence B. Hanson Jr. on the verso of the front free endpaper.

Persian Pictures. With a Preface by Sir E. Denison Ross

London: Ernest Benn Limited, 1928., 1928. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY BELL'S SISTER. Octavo, pp.198. Bound in publisher's green cloth with title and author's name in gilt lettering to spine, with a decorative gilt border at endcaps. In a simple cream dustjacket with book details printed in black to front of jacket, with an illustration of a (presumably) Persian man on horseback, shooting a bow and arrow. Dustjacket also features a small review/description reading 'This book of travellers' tales, in every way worthy to rank with Kinglake's EOTHEN, was written at the age of 26, after her first visit to the East. It fills the gap of two years in her letters and also sets out the reasons for the fascination which that romantic part of the world always had for her. It is a book full of charm and shrewd observation.' Cloth boards in excellent condition, with limited signs of wear, one faint mark to rear board, all corners bumped, endcaps very slightly pushed, gilt lettering is a little dulled, top edge gilt, fore edge shows spotting, personal stamp of Sir Percy Cox, one of the major figures in the creation of Iraq, attractively mounted to pastedown. Text block very clean throughout, excepting some minor browning toward very first and final few leaves. Inscription reads, 'To Sir Percy Cox, With much gratitude. Florence Bell, 1928'. Dustjacket in like condition, with some dustiness, discolouration at spine, darkened along creases, with some negligible chips (primarily at spine), flaps very clean. An excellent copy. The book's ownership has imparted it with a fascinating legacy.
