The Voiage and Travaille of Sir John Maundevile Knt. Which treateth of the Way to Hierusalem; and of Marvayles of Inde, with other Ilands and Countreyes

New York: Printed at San Francisco, by Edwin and Robert Grabhorn for the Random House, 1928. One of only 150 copies, this no.30. 31 illustrations by Valenti Angelo plus 34 initials and numerous paragraph marks illuminated by hand also by Angelo which were copied from early books and manuscripts. Printed in Rudolf Koch's Gothic type. Folio, binding of wooden boards, skilfully rebacked by Sangorski in morocco (which has been slightly rubbed at the bottom), generally a very good copy. In terms of design and execution, this is thought by many to be the most desirable book of the Press, especially with its content of Mandeville's early guide for Holy Land pilgrims which takes us through Turkey, Persia, India, Egypt &c. Bernard Cerf certainly approved - the Grabhorns had intended to sell all 150 themselves but when Cerf saw the proofs he bought the entire edition for Random House. Booklabel of Clarence B. Hanson Jr. on the verso of the front free endpaper.

Persian Pictures. With a Preface by Sir E. Denison Ross

London: Ernest Benn Limited, 1928., 1928. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY BELL'S SISTER. Octavo, pp.198. Bound in publisher's green cloth with title and author's name in gilt lettering to spine, with a decorative gilt border at endcaps. In a simple cream dustjacket with book details printed in black to front of jacket, with an illustration of a (presumably) Persian man on horseback, shooting a bow and arrow. Dustjacket also features a small review/description reading 'This book of travellers' tales, in every way worthy to rank with Kinglake's EOTHEN, was written at the age of 26, after her first visit to the East. It fills the gap of two years in her letters and also sets out the reasons for the fascination which that romantic part of the world always had for her. It is a book full of charm and shrewd observation.' Cloth boards in excellent condition, with limited signs of wear, one faint mark to rear board, all corners bumped, endcaps very slightly pushed, gilt lettering is a little dulled, top edge gilt, fore edge shows spotting, personal stamp of Sir Percy Cox, one of the major figures in the creation of Iraq, attractively mounted to pastedown. Text block very clean throughout, excepting some minor browning toward very first and final few leaves. Inscription reads, 'To Sir Percy Cox, With much gratitude. Florence Bell, 1928'. Dustjacket in like condition, with some dustiness, discolouration at spine, darkened along creases, with some negligible chips (primarily at spine), flaps very clean. An excellent copy. The book's ownership has imparted it with a fascinating legacy.

        Eigenh. Manuskript mit U.

[Berlin, 11. Dezember 1928]. Dezember, unter dem Titel „The sign of the Leopard" am Broadway seine Premiere feierte: „It is two o’clock in the morning and very cold. Does Berlin ever go to sleep? It is the most restless and yet the most restful city in the world. It has the hum of London but there are times when London is quiet and the streets are deserted but in Berlin the night revellers going home meet the early risers going to work . there will be snow I think – I can smell it in the air. I suppose I should be wise and go to bed. But to leave a play that is three parts written is very difficult for me. Still I can get up early in the morning. I wonder how ‚Der Zinker’ will be received? The company is an excellent one, but it is curious to listen to your own play in a language which you cannot understand. And yet it is fascinating to listen to these rich German voices and watch the actors move and gesticulate . It is eight o’clock in New York, the curtain is up on the premiere of ‚Der Zinker’ (they call it ‚The Sign of the Leopard’ there)[.] Will Carl Brandt telephone me from New York . I wonder what sort of a girl is playing the principal role? Some German girls have a certain appealing beauty [.] What was the name of that girl I met yesterday? [.] I should like to be able to read what t[he] German correspondent wrote about my views on art. So many English people use the word ‚art’ when they mean ‚aesthetic’. They tell me I am not an artist because I write about criminals. Other people are artists when they write about God and show him in plus fours [d. s. kurze Hosen, die zehn Zentimeter unters Knie reichen und im Allgemeinen zum Sport getragen werden]. I have my own views on the personal God but there are millions of people to whom he is something real and beautiful. Why wound the spirit of millions of good people? It is like desecrating the grave of a mans mother. But it may be good art. I don’t know. I am bourgeoisie I suppose . Half past two . taxis and cars still rolling to and from the Brandenburger Tor. A restless friendly city. How hard everybody works and how serious they are . They work hard on the stage and in the studios . there were two or three English actors in the cinema-studio I visited this afternoon. They were sorry that the film was finishing . Everybody had been so kind to them[.] ‚My God they work hard!’ said one ‚but they work to schedule! You know exactly what you have to do and when you have to do it!’ . Bed is a nice place but that wedge shaped bolster under your head is an abomination . What was the name of that young German actress? . Very lovely . I wonder how she would film? . God in plus fours . art has many expressions [.]". – Tls. mit winzigen Randläsuren, sonst sehr wohlerhalten, wenn auch etwas fleckig.

London: Andrew Block,, 1928. Square octavo (28 leaves). Original marbled wrappers, paper label on front cover. Woodcut title vignette of the Green Man, 12 plates, colophon. Small neat library label at top corner of front cover, some loss of paper from partially split spine, some creasing, tears and chips, internally a little used, one plate ("Brothers") has a light pencil grid drawn over the top (presmuably for purposes of copying the image). First and limited edition, first impression, one of 200 copies; decidedly scarce: only six copies in British and Irish institutional libraries (BL, National Library of Scotland, National Library of Wales, Oxford, Exeter, V&A), while OCLC adds another dozen copies worldwide. Invalided out of the army with neurasthenia in 1918 Ralph Chubb (1892-1960) studied at the Slade and became a close friend of Leon Underwood, who was responsible for Chubb's work being exhibited: at Chenil's (1922) and the Goupil Gallery (1929). "He was a part-time art teacher at Bradfield College [Berkshire] (1924-27), but had to resign for sexual indiscretions. He taught life-drawing at St. Martin's School of Art (1930-33). Early on, he seemed destined to have a fairly conventional artistic career but he painted pictures which shocked and wrote books which no-one would publish" (Horne, The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators, p. 144). He later produced painstakingly illuminated works in the manner of Blake and a mystical personal ethos "declaring homosexuality and pederasty to be an inextricable part of a new religion" (Horne).

London: Printed by Bernard Newdigate at the Shakespeare Head Press for the Cresset Press, 1928. No. 102 OF 195 COPIES on paper (and 10 copies on vellum.) n. Hardcover. 368 x 264 mm (14 1/2 x 10 3/8"). Two volumes. No. 102 OF 195 COPIES on paper (and 10 copies on vellum.). Publisher's black stained vellum by Sangorski & Sutcliffe (stamp-signed on rear pastedown), raised bands, gilt titling on upper cover and spine. Two large vignettes and 10 POWERFUL EXPRESSIONISTIC ENGRAVED PLATES, the vignettes and six of the plates by Blair Hughes-Stanton, the other four by Gertrude Hermes. Ransom, p. 6; Hughes-Stanton 4. A hint of rubbing to extremities, one leaf with closed marginal tear, but A FINE SET, quite clean, fresh, and bright inside and out. This is a very well-preserved copy of one of the two or three most handsome and striking products of the Cresset Press, operated between 1927 and 1931 under the direction of Dennis M. Cohen and A. I. Myers. For this majestic "Pilgrim's Progress," as for other publications, they employed for their printers the Shakespeare Head Press, directed at Stratford-on-Avon by Bernard Henry Newdigate. Between the wars Newdigate (1869-1944) was probably the most important name in private press printing. Franklin says that Newdigate's years at the Shakespeare Head Press made it "the most mature and sophisticated of the private presses." The work Newdigate did for distribution by his own as well as by other presses comprised an output that had a profound influence on the standards of book production in Britain. The artists Blair Hughes-Stanton (1902-81) and Gertrude Hermes (1901-83) both studied at the school of Leon Underwood at Hammersmith. They were still in their twenties when they executed these sophisticated expressive woodcuts, and both went on to have long and productive careers as avant-garde artists. In her book on her father's work, Penelope Hughes-Stanton says that the present production "was perhaps the first real test of the two young artists' ability to harness their rampant expressionism and fit it into the restricting reins of a letterpress production." Newdigate pressured them to make their art look more like that of Eric Gill, but they resisted and successfully established their unique personal styles as illustrators. The names of the plates here give a sense of the drama involved: "The Valley of the Shadow of Death," "The River of God," "The Pilgrims Cross the River of Death," "The Slough of Despond," "The Fight between Grim and Great-Heart," and so on.

Nonesuch Press, London 1928 - This is a Limited Edition of 1475 copies, of which this is number 214. It is printed on Van Gelder paper by Daniel Jacomet. The Italian text was established originally in 1923 by Mario Casella and revised for this edition by him. The English translation by H.F. Cary was originally published in 1814 and with corrections in 1844. Full orange vellum over boards, folio size, no dust jacket. There is foxing on the first free endpaper and the last free endpaper, but all other pages and all plates are pristine and present. The spine is badly sunned, there is a long light scratch on the front cover and a deeper shorter scrape. Former owner's pastedown bookplate on endpaper. The vellum has pulled the boards a bit, which vellum has a tendency to do as it ages. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Die Tragische Geschichte Von Hamlet Prinzen Von Daenmark

Weimar: Printed at the Cranach Press by Henry Kessler., 1928-9. The German edition in an original deluxe Dorfner binding. Wood engravings by Edward Gordon Craig, and wood-engraved lettering by Eric Gill, typeface designed by Edward Johnston, after that used by Fust & Schoeffer in their Mainz Psalter of 1457. The hemp and linen fibre paper was made by Maillol. No.130 of only 230 copies of the German edition. Folio, original full red morocco, spine lettered with borders in gilt by Otto Dorfner of Weimer, the Press binders. A couple of tiny marks but generally an extremely good copy. The fore edge has some spotting as usual and there is some browning in the margin not affecting the text on p.57-9 and 70-73, othwrwise a very good copy. Intended by Count Kessler as the crowning glory of his private Cranach Press, Hamlet was 17 years in gestation from when he had seen Gordon Craig's black figures for his Moscow Hamlet and decided that spectacular woodcuts could be printed from them. The result is one of the most important and spectacular works of the private press movement. Brinks, The Book as a Work of Art, The Cranach Press, p.412.

Illustrated throughout with a profusion of plates in each volume. SCARCE FIRST EDITION AND THIS, FROM THE LIMITED ISSUE WITH A LEAF OF AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT INCLUDED. Beveridge, known also for his great biography of Chief Justice Marshall, spent many years researching the available materials for this work. He made ongoing investigations, questioning what had been published by others and trusting no agent without verifying the work. He made journeys to the Lincoln country, sifted the the many traditions which have grown wherever the family rested, and sought to see for himself how far the neighborhood could influence the man. He was tireless in reading collections of papers still unpublished, in carefully going through files of newspapers, journals and books. The result of his labours presented itself in the form of this fine four volume work on Lincoln in the years leading up to the presidency. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

This is the wonderful deluxe version of one of the finest productions of the Cresset Press, our copy from a notable collection renowned for the outstanding condition of its holdings. It is not too much to say that the collection of The Garden Ltd., assembled by Haven O'More with funding from Michael Davis, was the most outstanding library of notable books put together in America in the second half of the 20th century. When it was auctioned by Sotheby's in 1989, the sale brought in $16.2 million. The library included high spots from all periods (the four Shakespeare folios, the first of "Don Quixote," and Blake's "Songs of Innocence and Experience" brought in more than $5 million alone), and the collection was breathtaking in its impeccable condition-as is evidenced by the present set, which was lot 305 in the sale. O'More had acquired it at the sale of noted collector Doris Benz in November of 1984.

New York: Printed by the Grabhorn Press, San Francisco, for Random House, 1928. No. 104 OF 150 COPIES n. Hardcover. 368 x 242 mm (14 1/2 x 9 5/8"). 2 p.l., 156 pp., [1] leaf. No. 104 OF 150 COPIES. Publisher's Philippine mahogany boards backed with brown Niger morocco by William Wheeler, raised bands, spine with titling in blind, "TKD" embossed in blank on the portion of the spine leather extending onto the front board. Paragraph marks in red or blue, 32 woodcuts in the text, and 34 large hand-illuminated initials in red, blue, and gold by Valenti Angelo. Heller & Magee 107. One page with faint paint residue in the margin, but A VERY FINE COPY, the binding extremely bright and virtually unworn, and the text showing no signs of use. This attractively bound, printed, and illuminated edition of a famous Medieval travel book is one of the finest productions of the Grabhorn Press, and was recognized in 1928 as one of the 50 Books of the Year by the AIGA design association. The content, type, illustrations, illuminations, and binding come together to create a tribute to early books and at the same time a very pleasing example of modern private press printing. This book marked the first use in America of the Bibel Gotisch type designed and cut by Rudolf Koch, and Heller & Magee observes that the work "was an ideal subject for this type and for the simple medieval illustrations of Valenti Angelo that accompany it" (not to mention the 5,100[!] initials Angelo illuminated by hand in the 150 copies). The Press had intended to offer the work for direct sale, but the entire run was purchased by Bennett Cerf (who saw the proofs on a visit to San Francisco) for issuance under the imprint of Random House. First appearing as an anonymous French manuscript in about 1357, Mandeville's account exists in many forms: there are at least 22 versions known from some 250 surviving manuscripts, and the work was printed at least 20 times in the 15th century. The book continued to appear with regularity in English during the 16th and 17th centuries, but the 1725 printing upon which the Grabhorn edition is based is said by Cox to be the "completest edition up to date," and it is characterized by Lowndes as "the best English edition." Cox tells us that although "long accepted as an authentic and valuable record of travel," the work is now known to be a fabrication, perhaps pieced together by a monk fluent in languages and with access to a large library, but with no experience as a world traveller. Regardless of its origin, it continues to provide fascinating reading as an account of the known world in the 14th century. Authentically quaint, the woodcuts here are based on illustrations in early printed editions. The Grabhorn Press bibliography tells us that of this edition, "a few copies exist with the illustrations hand-colored. These were done for experimental purposes and were not for sale." While the illustrations in this copy are, in fact, hand colored (and done carefully and tastefully), it is possible this enhancement was the work of a later owner. It is also possible that this is a specially colored copy for "TKD," who may have been someone important to the Press, but whose identity is unknown to us.
