Bottoms Up: 52 Cock-Tail Spins for High Flyers

Chicago: Buzza Company. FIRST EDITION. Original paper. RARE CLASSIC PROHIBITION-ERA COCK-TAIL BOOK, WITH THE RARE ORIGINAL CORKSCREW. "This rare Prohibition Era cocktail recipe book, die-cut in the shape of a cocktail shaker, was published in the U.S. in 1928, at the height of the Prohibition Era, flaunting the ban on alcohol with cocktail recipes by famous silent film stars, vaudeville performers and musicians, including W. C. Fields, Fanny Brice, Florenz Ziegfield, Ted Lewis and George Gershwin. "Bottoms Up is notable for two reasons.  It was one of only a few cocktail books published in the U.S. during Prohibition, and it's the earliest known example of a book of cocktail recipes of famous celebrities. This is a natural pairing.  While most Americans found it difficult or impossible to obtain alcohol during Prohibition, celebrities, especially in the entertainment business, thrived on the underground cocktail culture. "It's significant that "Tex" Guinan is included. Mary Louise "Texas" Guinan made her silent film debut in 1917 in The Wildcat, becoming America's first movie cowgirl, "The Queen of the West". "However Tex's importance in this cocktail book was her notorious reputation as the owner and manager of a Prohibition Era speakeasy called the 300 Club at 151 W. 54th Street in New York City. Her club was routinely raided by the police, but Tex always claimed that the patrons had brought the liquor in with them.  The 300 Club was the gathering spot of New York's wealthy and famous, including George Gershwin, Reggie Vanderbilt, Gloria Swanson, Clara Bow, Irving Berlin, John Barrymore and Rudolph Valentino.  Ruby Keeler and George Raft were discovered as dancers at Tex's 300 Club. "Each of the celebrity cocktail recipes concludes with a nostalgic "Do You Remember?" reminiscence of the grand bars, hotels and casinos that had once flourished before Prohibition. "The book also contains a page of Antidotes and Pick-me-ups, Helpful Hints for making cocktails, Rules of the International Bar Flies, The Amalgamated Order of Beer Shifters, and The Code of the Bar Flies. "Today's tradition of American cocktails primarily developed during, and because of, Prohibition.  Cocktail books before this era were usually trade publications intended for professional bartenders.  Then the 1920s and early 30s saw the emergence of do-it-yourself cocktail books, mostly published in England, France, Canada and Cuba, featuring the new explosion of cocktails that developed during Prohibition.  Very few cocktail books were published in the U.S. at this time, since the ingredients weren't available, and Bottoms Up is the rarest of them all.  So far, only two copies of this book are known to have survived" (Richard Powers, stanford.edu). Although rare, it is our experience that there are significantly more than two copies in existence. NOTE: Includes the very rare original corkscrew (which has been polished and cleaned). Chicago: The Buzza Company, 1928. 41 pp. Illustrated with photographs. 22.5x16 cm in the shape of a cocktail shaker, illustrated wrappers, string bound; custom olive-green silk box. Wear and a few chips to edges, minor pencil marks on a few blanks. A well-preserved copy of a very rare and fragile item.

        Lady Chatterley?s Lover

1928. first edition. First Edition of ?Lady Chatterley?s Lover? LAWRENCE, D.H. Lady Chatterley?s Lover. [Florence]: Privately Printed [by the Tipografia Giuntina], 1928.First edition. Limited to 1,000 numbered copies, (this being copy number 466) signed by the author. Octavo (8 17/8 x 6 1/4 inches; 225 x 159 mm.). [4], 365, [1, blank] pp.Rebound [by the Chelsea Bindery] within the last twenty years in full black morocco, covers ruled in gilt, spine with five raised bands decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, marbled end-papers, top edge gilt, others uncut. Some very light staining affecting limitation leaf, title-page and a few margins throughout the text, otherwise an excellent example of this fictional account of the day-to-day life of an English Gamekeeper?.Lady Chatterley?s Lover is tripled with Ulysses and Tropic of Cancer as the seminal suppressed books from the first half of the twentieth century."No account of Lady Chatterley?s Lover can be complete without some notice of the most memorable review of the novel by Ed Zern, which appeared in Field and Stream for November 1959, p. 142 (see also The D. H. Lawrence Review 8 (Fall 1975) 376-377). It is short and reproduced here for the benefit of those who do not have access to a copy. The review was written as the result of a request from the editor, Hugh Grey, that Mr. Zern choose an outdoor book for review as a ?sort of test case?.??Although written many years ago, Lady Chatterley?s Lover has just been reissued by the Grove Press, and this fictional account of the day-to-day life of an English gamekeeper is still of considerable interest to outdoor minded readers, as it contains many passages on pheasant raising, the apprehending of poachers, ways to control vermin, and other chores and duties of the professional gamekeeper. Unfortunately one is obliged to wade through many pages of extraneous material in order to discover and savor these sidelights on the management of a Midland shooting estate, and in this reviewer?s opinion this book cannot take the place of J.R. Miller?s Practical Gamekeeping.??Hereafter, no Lawrence collection can be said to be complete without a copy of Miller?s Practical Gamekeeping to place alongside Lady Chatterley?s Lover!? (Warren Roberts, p. 152-153).Roberts A42a.

        Mescal.

London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co. Ltd.,, 1928. The 'Divine' Plant and its Psychological Effects. With an introduction by MacDonald Critchley. Small octavo (153 x 94 mm). Original buff paper boards, red cloth backstrip, printed paper label to spine as issue, front board lettered in red. Extremities very lightly rubbed, spine gently rolled, small chip to label not affecting text, pale marking to pp. 22-3. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression. Highly significant presentation copy of the author's breakthrough study of mescaline-induced hallucinations, handsomely inscribed "To Professor W. R. Miles, with compliments of the author Heinrich Klüver, Chicago, Nov. 1928" on the front free endpaper, with the book label of the recipient Walter Richard Miles to the front pastedown. Miles (1885-1975) was an influential American psychologist and president of the American Psychological Association, noted for his work on the effects of alcohol and for his development of experimental apparatus. From 1922 to 1932 he ran the experimental laboratory at Stanford University, where Klüver completed his PhD on eidetic phenomena ? unusually strong mental images ? in 1924, having arrived from Germany the previous year. "Heinrich Klüver (1897-1979) was one of the twentieth century's most widely influential scientists, a pioneer in the fields of psychology, neuroanatomy, and psychochemistry ? Klüver's early interests were in eidetic imagery ? By chance ? Klüver stumbled upon a reference in the literature, by W. Jaensch in 1921, to a plant that, upon ingestion, was capable of generating eidetic phenomena in noneidetic individuals ? With some help from his friend, the prominent psychophysicist Samuel Fernberger, Klüver came into possession of the plant, and on October 18, 1925, consumed it ? [He] would get much more out of his 'experiment' (as he called it) than he had imagined ? The sensory phenomena it induced were so profound that he would boldly declare: 'The importance of mescal for psychological research cannot be questioned' [p. 1]. He would publish multiple works detailing his experiments on himself and others with the plant, perhaps most famously his 1928 monograph" (Davoli, "Neurognostics Question: Heinrich Klüver's 'Divine' Plant", in Journal of the History of the Neurosciences, 16:318-19, 2007).

[Sterling, George- Association Copy] Sonnets to Craig

Long Beach: Upton Sinclair, 1928. First edition. Original maroon cloth, black stamped lettering. Scarce true first edition, self-published (preceding commercial edition in the same year). Superb associatiion copy, with lengthy inscription by Mary Craig Sinclair (i.e. "Craig"), wife of Upton Sinclair, and namesake to the present book (see below). Craig writes: "To William Ellery Leonard [poet, playwright], Whose beautiful appreciation of George's loss poems lessens my sadness. Perhaps George did not grieve in vain. Mary Craig Sinclair [Kimbrough]. April 15, 1928, Long Beach, California." And on front pastedown, an inscription from Leonard reads: "The letter referred to was as follows: Dear George Sterling... and Craig... and Upton. You have all three done together some thing wonderful in its beauty and noble in its humanity, which will endure in American storyt and art. Faithfully, William Ellery Leonard. About April 10." A fascinating thread, given the fact that Mary Craig very nearly married George Sterling. "Mary Craig Kimbrough married [Upton] Sinclair onnly after long agonizing between Sinclair and his old Carmel poet frien George Sterling. In 1928 in Long Beach, Sinclair actually published some of Sterling's love sonnets to Mary Craig." [From "Literary LA," by Lionel Rolfe, 2009].

The Culture of the Nude in China With 32 Original Photographs

Berlin: Eigenbrödler Verlag, 1928. First edition. Wraps. . Very Good/Good. 4to. 27.5 by 21 cm. 7 pp., followed by 31 photographic plates. The 32nd photograph is on the dust jacket, making this copy complete. A gravure process was used for the photos, creating a slightly gauzy, dreamy feel. The composition of each is striking, with a single prop generally and a plain background. The photos are arresting in their Sino minimalism. The nudity, it seems to us, is about this paring down of distraction and not meant to be erotic. We wonder what the nude woman might be thinking or what she is about, but she remains an fascinating enigma. Foxing on dust jacket edges, and some miniscule tears (one mm at most) along edges of DJ. Very slight light foxing on edge of a few leaves. Mostly clean.
