        COSTUMES BY EROS

1928 - AIKEN, Conrad. COSTUMES BY EROS. NY: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1928. Small 8vo., blue cloth in dust jacket; 266 pages. First Edition. A collection of 14 short stories, each dealing with the emotion typified by the Greek God Eros. Signed presentation from Aiken (using his initials) on the front endpaper: "M.F. from CA. Coals to Newcastle back again 1928." [See scan]. I believe this book was presented to Maurice Firuski, who owned the Dunster House Bookshop in Cambridge, Massachusetts and was a friend of Aiken. In 1927 he started "The Housatonuc" bookstore in Salisbury, Connecticut specializing in rare and antiquarian books. The move may have inspired the presentation- "Coals to Newcastle" is a British idiom for a foolhardy or pointless action. Laid in is a copy of an e-mail from Aiken's grand daughter Lizza Aiken, who is the daughter of Joan Aiken. In the letter Aiken confirms the handwriting is that of her grandfather and that the "joke" in the presentation "is typical, so I think I can fairly confidently say that I think it is his signature, in slightly grandiose mood." With a small promotional four-page leaflet promoting the Jonathan Cape English edition of this title laid in. Very Good (contents clean & tight); minor wear (some moderate browning & two small interior tape repairs, price-clipped) d/j. $875.00. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        FAIRY GARLAND

      - (DULAC,EDMUND)illus. A FAIRY GARLAND being fairy tales from the Old French. Lond: Cassell (1928). Large 4to, vellum backed blue cloth, small snag at base of spine and slight bit of foxing else fine. LIMITED TO 1000 LARGE PAPER NUMBERED COPIES SIGNED BY DULAC. Old French fairy tales by Perrault, D'Aulnoy and Count Hamilton are illustrated by Dulac with 12 beautiful color plates. Laid in is an interesting ONE PAGE HANDWRITTEN LETTER FROM DULAC written to the editor of the Daily Graphic. Dulac was obviously upset that the public's right to hear all music was being modified. His letter expresses his outrage and certainly is a window into his personality: " I wonder sometimes what the world would do without the help of the men "who know what the public want"! . their concern for the intellectual aesthetic welfare of others is paramount, their hardiness can only be compared to that of the methusalesque tortoise, their only weakness is that they do not always know "what the public what" - and which I understand, is taken into account in Mr. de Lara's scheme - is to be trated like a lot of undeveloped children, and be administered music like a medicine in graduated doses. Discussions of the relative merits of Parsifal and Maritana are futile, and it is precisely in avoiding these absurd restrictions of the use of certain types of music to certain classes of people, that Mr. de Lara's scheme is valuable. Maritana was not composed for the "uneducated" nor Parsifal for the "highbrows." What the public wants is the opportunity for the largest possible number to hear the largest possible number of operas. All premature expressions of opinion as to what should or should not be given them is preposterous. Yours faithfully Edmund Dulac." [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Twelve Days.

The Hogarth Press: London,, 1928. An account of a journey across the Bakhtiari Mountains in South-western Persia. Octavo. Original marbled brown and black cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. With 32 plates. Ends and corners nicked, occasional light spotting within, but an excellent copy in the bright smart jacket with a few marks and closed tears. First edition, first impression, presentation copy of Sackville-West's Persian travelogue to her then lover Hilda "Stoker" Matheson, in an excellent example of the scarce jacket, inscribed on the front free endpaper, "From V. Dec. 1928". This book was one of several inscribed by Vita and given to her then-lover Hilda Matheson (1888-1940), whom she nicknamed "Stoker", in December 1928. Matheson was Director of Talks at the BBC, and on 11th December Vita had delivered a radio broadcast there, appropriately on the subject of "The Modern Woman". They spent the night together, and Hilda was off work "sick" on the 12th. On the 13th, in one of the over 100 letters from Hilda to Vita which survive, she wrote "All day - ever since that blessed and ever to be remembered indisposition, I have been thinking of you - bursting with you - and wanting you - oh my god wanting you." It is possible that this book was gifted by Vita to "Stoker" during this "ever to be remembered indisposition", or at some other moment in this month at the height of their affair. The couple also travelled in Savoy together in 1929, and Vita dedicated her poem from that venture "Storm in the Mountains" (1929) to Hilda. When Hilda died in December 1940 after a botched hospital operation, Vita in an obituary described her characteristically as a "sturdy little pony".

        THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS

London: Printed by Bernard Newdigate at the Shakespeare Head Press for the Cresset Press, 1928. ONE OF 195 COPIES on paper (and 10 copies on vellum.). 368 x 264 mm. (14 1/2 x 10 3/8"). Two volumes. ONE OF 195 COPIES on paper (and 10 copies on vellum.). Publisher's original black stained vellum by Sangorski and Sutcliffe (stamped-signed to lower pastedown), uppers covers with gilt-lettered title and author, spines similarly gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Two large vignettes and 10 POWERFUL EXPRESSIONISTIC ENGRAVED PLATES, the vignettes and six of the plates by Blair Hughes-Stanton, the other four by Gertrude Hermes. Ransom, p. 6; Hughes-Stanton 4. Spines a little sunned, scattered small spots of fading to boards, otherwise an excellent set, clean, fresh, and bright in sound bindings. This is a well-preserved copy of one of the two or three most handsome and striking products of the Cresset Press. For this majestic "Pilgrim's Progress," as for other publications, Cresset employed as printer the Shakespeare Head Press, directed at Stratford-on-Avon by Bernard Henry Newdigate, probably the most important person in private press printing between the wars. The artists Blair Hughes-Stanton (1902-81) and Gertrude Hermes (1901-83) both studied at the school of Leon Underwood at Hammersmith. They were still in their twenties when they executed these sophisticated, expressive woodcuts, and both went on to have long and productive careers as avant-garde artists. In her book on her father's work, Penelope Hughes-Stanton says that the present production "was perhaps the first real test of the two young artists' ability to harness their rampant expressionism and fit it into the restricting reins of a letterpress production." Newdigate pressured them to make their art look more like that of Eric Gill, but they resisted and successfully established their unique personal styles as illustrators. The names of the plates here give a sense of the drama involved: "The Valley of the Shadow of Death," "The River of God," "The Pilgrims Cross the River of Death," "The Slough of Despond," "The Fight between Grim and Great-Heart," and so on.         The Front Page (Photographs from the 1928 Broadway stage premiere)

N.p., N.p. 1928 - Two vintage oversize photographs from the first stage production of "The Front Page" in 1928, showing two different trio shots of the reporters who grace the majority of the play. The first photo, a double weight 8 x 10 by Florence Vandamm with her blindstamped name on the recto, shows Lee Tracy (later played by Rosalind Russell onscreen), Osgood Perkins, and Frances Fuller. The second, a oversize 11 x 14, uncredited but by White Studios in New York City, shows the star Walter Baldwin (later played by Cary Grant onscreen), Osgood Perkins, and Lee Tracy. Both photographs with numerous notations and stamps on the verso. Excessively rare photographs from the first staging of the play that made Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur famous. The play would be published the same year in book form by Covici-Friede, and was the basis for three films: The Front Page" in 1931 with Adolphe Menjou and Pat O'Brien, "The Front Page" in 1974 with Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, and most famously, the classic screwball comedy "His Girl Friday," with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell in 1940.

PETER PAN. Or The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up

1928. [fine in fine jacket] London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1928. Original blue-grey cloth with cover and spine labels, with dust jacket. First Edition of Barrie's famous play featuring Peter Pan and Tinker Bell, the Darling children and Nana, and of course Captain Hook and Smee. "Peter Pan" first turned up as a relatively minor character in Barrie's 1902 novel, THE LITTLE WHITE BIRD. Then in December 1904 this play was first produced, but it was not published until 1928, as this volume in "The Uniform Edition of The Plays of J. M. Barrie." (In the interim, 1911 to be specific, Barrie wrote a narrative version which was published as the book PETER AND WENDY.)~Included in this book is Barrie's 29-page Dedication "To the Five" in which he relates how, decades earlier, he had created (with their help) Peter Pan. Although he identifies them here only as #s 1 through 5, these were the five sons of Arthur and Sylvia Llewelyn Davies, with whom Barrie (according to a biographer) was "obsessed." The boys' names were George, John, Peter, Michael and Nicholas, and in the play they appear as George (the father) Darling, John Darling, Peter Pan, and Michael Nicholas Darling.~This volume is in fine condition; the dust jacket is just about fine as well, with a few tiny edge-nicks. Cutler pp 200-201.

      G. W Bromley & Co., New York 1928 - 1928 Edition (original, not a facsimile). VERY GOOD. A clean, unmarked copy. Light marginal toning to pages, otherwise pages are near fine. Bound in brown cloth hardcover with titles stamped in red on front cover. Cover is worn with most of spine cloth missing or detaching, front and rear boards clean, moderately rubbed. Binding is intact but tender. The 4-page Street Index is loose but present. (It appears to have been intentionally removed from the binding, but is laid into the book, those pages edgeworn.) Book block is otherwise intact. Interior hinges are lined with reinforcing tape and hinges will probably last for some time with considerate handling. This is a large Folio, measuring 13 x 16-1/2". The book is superlatively produced with 169 full-page plates: hand-colored maps detailing streets and buildings color-keyed for type of structures (e.g. wood, brick, etc.) lot sizes and numbers, number of stories of each building also providing names of apartment buildings and commercial properties. Parks are colored in green and water courses, reservoirs in blue. Line work shows trolley lines, water lines, sewers, fire hydrants and more. A Block Index is pasted to the inside front cover and there is also the above-mentioned 4-page Street Index. There are also 4 pages of color maps preceding the plates that provide an overview of The Bronx (from South Bronx to the Northern border with Yonkers) as well as the "key" to colors and graphic markings. Cary and 42 illustrations after the drawings by Sandro Botticelli. Folio. Original orange vellum, titles to spine, roundels and ruling to boards gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed.
