      Aventinum, Prague 1928 - Octavo (19.3 × 12.3 cm). Original printed wrappers; 159, [5] pp. Signed and inscribed by Weiner on the half title. Wrappers very lightly sun-toned and creased; still a highly attractive copy, very good or better. Second edition of Weiner's first book of prose, considered to be the first work of Czech literature inspired by modern warfare and the horrors of World War I. Weiner (1884-1937) was a Czech Jew who began his journalistic and literary career after moving to Paris in 1912, but happened to witness the outbreak of the War while in Prague. A recent article notes that Weiner had "intimate knowledge of shell-shock in its most literal form: he saw active service in Bosnia in 1912 and in Serbia in 1914. Indeed, his second tour of duty ended in a nervous breakdown, and in early 1915 he returned to Prague" (Peter Zusi, "States of Shock: Kafka and Richard Weiner," 135). Weiner published both poetry and prose throughout the 1910-20s, in a stylistically complex, psychologically probing, and fundamentally abstract style that has invited comparisons to Franz Kafka since at least the 1930s. While his early work is marked by expressionism, Weiner became influenced by surrealism in the late 1920s, after once again settling in Paris. Evidently some passages of Litice were too risque for the censor, who cut entire paragraphs, and the 1916 first edition was printed with visual omissions; this second edition first presented the complete text. Weiner is still little known outside the Czech Republic, although recent years have seen more attention, following the translation of his "The Game for Real" into English. Scarce, especially signed.         Six Original Costume Designs.

      1928 Six designs, three signed and dated. Pencil, ink & watercolour on card, mounted into six compartments, each approx. 30 x 20cm. Framed & glazed, 76 x 77cm.Herbert Norris, 1875?-1950, was an occasional actor, costume designer and consultant who worked in the theatre and on films as well as pageants, and as advisor to Madame Tussauds. He was a pupil of the celebrated theatrical designer Wilhelm (pseudonym of William Charles Pitcher) and then developed his own career working for Nathans and producing his best known works, a series of attractively illustrated books on historical costume. These designs, dated 1828, are of the period of the musical Song of the Sea staged at His Majesty's Theatre in October 1928 based on the story of Emma Hamilton. However they do not correspond with photographs of the production. Norris's archive is held at the University of Bristol Theatre Collection.

      Belgrade, Serbia: Francusko-Srpska Knjizara A. M. Popovic . 1928 - 4°, 56 pp., [2], original tan wrappers with illustrated cover (Slightly age-toned, paper as usually fragile with tiny chips in the edges of first and last pages, wrappers with repaired small loss of paper in margins, repaired long tear in the back cover, stamp of the previous owner A. M. Popovi_ on the back, otherwise in a good condition). An uncommon Serbian book with poems by Todor Manojlovi_ with the cover design by an Avant-Garde artist Mihailo S. Petrov, a member of Group Oblik. Signed by the author. Todor Manojlovi_ was a famous Serbian dramaturge, writer, poet and professor at the Academy of Belgrade. This book of poems were published in the French-Serbian publishing house in Belgrade. The cover was designed by a Serbian Avant-Garde artist Mihailo S. Petrov (1902-1983) one of Zenir's most active collaborators during its first phase of 1921. He was also working with other avant-garde magazines like Dada Tank and Ut. From 1926 to 1929 he was a member of the Group Oblik. He was the founder of the Graphic Department at the Academy of Fine Arts and the Academy of Applied Arts in Belgrade. The book was signed by Manojlovic and dedicated to the actor and drama editor Ivo Rai_ Lonjski (1881-1931). We could only trace five examples in institutions worldwide.

Publisher's salmon cloth pictorially stamped in gilt within a single gilt rule on front cover and ruled and lettered in gilt on spine. Top edge gilt. Original peach pictorial endpapers printed in black. Three corners very slightly bumped, very light offsetting from dust jacket to end-papers. An excellent near fine copy with no fading to the salmon cloth except for the very top edges. In the original first issue salmon pictorial dust jacket printed in dark blue with the rear flap of the jacket showing 179th Thousand for When We Were Very Young, 96th Thousand for Winnie the Pooh and 109th Thousand for Now We Are Six. Minimal wear to top edge of dust jacket, minimal fading to spine. A wonderful example. "Once more, and for the last time we meet Christopher Robin and his friends in the forest. Pooh and Piglet, Kanga and Roo, Owl, Eeyore and Rabbit, together with all Rabbit's friends and relations, all there as before, but they are joined now by a new friend, the Strange and Bouncy Tigger. At the end Pooh makes, as far as his waist will permit, his farewell bow, hoping that if you hear no more of him and Christopher Robin, you will still keep a friendly place in your hearts for them." (Jacket flap) The final book in the Pooh quartet and the first time that we encounter the game of Poohsticks. Poohsticks is a game that was first mentioned in The House at Pooh Corner, a Winnie-the-Pooh book by A. A. Milne. It is a simple game which may be played on any bridge over running water; each player drops a stick on the upstream side of a bridge and the one whose stick first appears on the downstream side is the winner. The annual World Poohsticks Championships have been held at Day's Lock on the River Thames in the UK since 1984.

        Archive of World War One letters and documents relating to a Polish immigrant's service in the 26th Infantry Division's 104th Infantry Regiment and his death at Belleau Woods on the first day of the Aisne-Marne Offensive

      Massachusetts and France, 1928. This grouping consists of 58 items: * Seven letters written by Kocienski while in France (two of the letters are written in Polish; one letter is damaged and incomplete), * One packet of 30 documents, letters, and notes related to his death and the payment of federal next-of-kin benefits (including Kocienski's official naturalization certificate, death notification, and letters written by his commander), * One packet of 15 documents, letters, and notes related to payment of Massachusetts next-of-kin benefits, * Four letters related to payment of War Risk Insurance benefits, and * Two miscellaneous letters, one regarding the publication of a Gold Star memorial book and the other regarding a reunion of the 104th Infantry Regiment. Kocienski, born in what is today Poland in 1896, immigrated to the United States in 1912 and settled in Haydensville, Massachusetts where he lived with first cousin, Mary Antowska. The cousins had been exceptionally close since early childhood and had always referred to each other as brother and sister. When Kocienski enlisted in Army in early 1917, he named Mary as his beneficiary for all family and insurance allotments. Kocienski, born in what is today Poland in 1896, immigrated to the United States in 1912 and settled in Haydensville, Massachusetts where he lived with first cousin, Mary Antowska. The cousins had been exceptionally close since early childhood and had always referred to each other as brother and sister. When Kocienski enlisted in Army in early 1917, he named Mary as his beneficiary for all family and insurance allotments. Kocienski's letters to Mary include descriptions of Army life in a combat unit and trench warfare: "We lost a few men but we slain about two hundred Germans and we taken number of prisoners and us taken a number of prisoners. . . . We have just came out of the trenches. I suppose you have heard about the good work our regiment is doing in the front line trenches. We have had some pretty hart times. . . When we are off duty we stay in dugouts . . . we have to be very careful of shells because they are very dangerous if they strik anywhere near you, you are out of luck. When we hear the report of the gun over in the German lines we can almost tell by the sound where the shell is going so we have quite a lot of time to jump for cover . . . if we happen to be out in the middle of a field . . . we just drop flat on our stomachs. . . . The hardest part [is] to stand on guard all night watching and listening. . . . Sometimes you hear a noise that sounds like a big German and pull you rifle up to shoot and the first thing you hear is the squek of a rat it makes your hair stand on end. . . . I thought I saw a lot of big rats in the U.S. but the rats up around the trenches are the biggest I have ever seen or heard of. They live in the dugouts too, and when you go to bed at night they have a fine time running up and down your legs and face." The 104th Infantry first saw combat in April of 1918, and the entire unit was awarded the French Croix de Guerre for exceptional bravery and courage. In July of 1918, the 26th Division relieved the 2nd Division at Belleau Wood, where the 104th was almost immediately shelled with heavy high explosives and drenched in mustard gas. On the 18th, the regiment helped lead the attack during the Second Battle of the Marne in the Aisne-Marne Offensive. Kocienski was severely wounded in the initial assault and evacuated for medical attention, however he could not later be found and was listed for months as missing in action. Eventually, Mary was notified that he was killed and buried in an American cemetery in France after which she began receiving allotments as his next-of-kin, until during an administrative review, the Veteran's Bureau (precursor of today's Veteran's Administration) discovered that she was Kocienski's cousin and not his sister. Using his naturalization certificate, the Bureau determined Mary was ineligible for any benefits and instead began paying them to Kocienski's father in Russia. Worse, the Bureau demanded that Mary return the thousands of dollars she had already received back to the U.S. Treasury. The packets of documents included in this archive provide fascinating insight into the grinding disdain and insensitivity of the federal bureaucracy as well as the dogged perseverance of her lawyers and her "brother's" former commanding officer to prevent this travesty. It is unknown if they were successful. A unique and compelling collection that documents an immigrant's ultimate sacrifice for his adopted country in World War One and the callous indifference of big government that followed.

      National Miners Relief Committee n.d., but 1928, Pittsburgh - Poster advertising the buying and selling of Solidarity Certificates, issued by the communist-led National Miners Relief Committee, formed in response to a 16 month-long strike which left 150,000 miners in Ohio and Pennsylvania unemployed. The strike began after the workers in the bituminous coal fields experienced signifiant wage cuts in 1928. When the United Mine Workers' Union failed to support its members, the National Miners Relief Committee was formed, gaining notoriety after collaborating with Hollywood film director Sam Burke in the making of the propagandistic silent film documentary "The Miners' Strike" (1928). The present poster apparently issued early in the strike, warning readers that "If the Miners Union is destroyed the open shopper will next attack other organized trades" and "the American Labor movement will suffer a fatal blow and wages of organized as well as unorganized workers will go down." Members of the labor classes were thus encouraged to "Enlist at once in the Biggest Campaign for Strikers Relief ever undertaken by the Workers of America by buying and selling Solidarity Certificates for Miners Relief," the money being used for food and tents to feed and shelter the families of the striking miners. In November, 1928, Einstein was staying at Plesch's country estate on the Havel River outside of Berlin recovering from pericarditis (under the medical supervision of Plesch). The physician Janos Plesch (1878-1957) was a major figure in Einstein's life. "Einstein first met Plesch in 1919, when he was caring for his mother, Pauline, during her terminal illness, and chose him as his own physician when he became gravely ill with heart problems in 1928. Plesch guided him to recovery, part of which took place at Plesch's palatial villa in Gatow, where Einstein enjoyed privacy in the lakes region of southwestern Berlin. It has been said that Plesch and Einstein enjoyed each other's ribald sense of humor. Einstein is reputed to have said 'Plesch is a pig, but he is my friend'" (Calaprice, An Einstein Encyclopedia). Shortly after the presentation of this photograph Einstein turned fifty as well and it was Plesch who arranged for the city of Berlin to grant Einstein, "its most famous citizen," as a birthday present "lifelong rights to live in a country house that was part of a large lakeside estate that the city had acquired. There he would be able to escape, sail his wooden boat, and scribble his equations in serenity. It was a generous and gracious gesture. It was also a welcome one...         Romancero Gitano 1924-1927 (Gyspy Ballads).

      Sur, Buenos Aires 1928 - First edition of Garcia Lorca's classic work. Octavo, bound in red flex boards. Inscribed by the author, "Para Josefina de Roman con el recuerdo de Federico Garcia Lorca Madrid- 1934." Lorca has also drawn a sketch of a moon with face. In excellent condition with light rubbing to the extremities, small chip to the front free endpaper. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed.   Romancero Gitano (translated as Gypsy Ballads) is a poetry collection by Spanish writer Federico Garcia Lorca, published in 1928. It is his best known book of poetry. It is composed of eighteen romances with subjects like the night, death, the sky, and the moon. All of the poems deal with the Romani people and their culture. The work reflects the pains of a people who live on the margins of society and who feel persecuted by the representatives of authority and for their struggle against that authority. However, Garcia Lorca himself points out that his interest is focused not on describing a specific situation, but on the clash that occurs again and again between the forces encountered: in a poem that describes the struggle between the Civil Guard and the gypsies, he calls these sides "Roman" and "Carthaginian" to imply the permanence of the conflict. "Their imagery is often vividly synaesthetic, inventive and unexpected . . . the poems celebrate and lament the concrete and the mysterious, in language that manages both to be startlingly fresh and obviously in debt to a rich tradition, that of the traditional Spanish ballad and its offshoots" (Gyln Pursglove). " Nr. 49 in the Library of Congress's "Illustrated Children's Books and Periodicals in Hebrew and Yiddish, 1900-1929 in the Collections of the Library of Congress: An Illustrated Finding Aid" (see online) : "A collection of 43 stories by Yiddish writer Herman Gold. The illustrations were created by Zuni Maud (1891-1956) and Yosl Cutler (d. 1934) , a team of artists best-known as Yiddish puppeteers during the 1920s. Their puppet shows centered on Jewish themes mixed with a strong dose of Socialism and were created from their own designs. The two artists began working together in New York sometime in the 1920s after immigrating from Russia. " Two of the images, including Cutler's Jumping Cow, are featured in the YIVO exhibit, "Through the Yiddish Looking Glass: The Art of Yiddish Children's Literature. " Between 1916-1920 Zuni Maud edited the entertainment section in Forverts, and his comics and cartoons appeared later in the Zionist daily Di Tsayt, the satirical weekly Der Groyser Kundes, and in several magazines for children published in Yiddish. In 1924 he designed the scenery and costumes for the production of Maurice Schwartz "Di kishefmacherin; " he later began his artistic cooperation with the puppeteer Yosi Cutler and together they opened the Union Studio "Studio Modicut", which included a puppet theater. In 1928, together, they designed costumes for the contemporary adaptation of "God, Man and Devil" by Jakub Gordin. In 1929, they set off on a tour around Europe, they staged their puppet performances in London, Paris, Brussels and Warsa . In 1930 they were invited to the Soviet Union where for six months they staged plays in many cities. They returned to New York in 1932, and a year later they finished cooperation. In 1935, on one of Hollywood's streets, Yosi Cutler was killed by a drunk driver. Maud was known for his pro-communist views, and for many years he collaborated with the Morgen Frayhayt newspaper. In April 1956, the chief editor, Paul (Pesach) Novick, called a meeting of the editorial staff and announced that following Stalin's death, it had come to light that many Soviet Yiddish writers and artists had been killed as a result of the trial of Jewish poets These were people whom Zuni Maud met during his stay in the Soviet Union; the news strongly shocked him, and after returning home he suffered a heart attack and died (Wikipedia, 2017) .         The House at Pooh Corner

      This is an excellent First Edition copy of one of the most popular children's books, by A. A. Milne, the final book in the Winnie the Pooh Series.Published by Methuen, London; 1928. This smart first edition copy of the popular final book of the winnie the pooh series is in Near Fine condition. There is some slight bumping to the spine ends and board corneres, a little fading to the salmon pink of the original boards, and a few tiny black marks to the rear board, but apart from this the binding is tight and the boards free from blemishes or damage, with the lovely gold gilt detailing to the front and lettering to the spine. There is a gift inscription to the front free endpaper, and the odd age spot and very slight toning, particularly to the free endpapers, but apart from this the pages are remarkably clean and bright and free from blemishes or wear. The dustjacket is in Near Fine condition. There is some chipping to the spine ends and the edges, and a darkening to the edges and spine, but apart from this the jacket retains it's lovely salmon pink colour. Apart from some small rubbing marks to the panels, there are no other real issues to speak of and it is a very smart jacket for this lovely book. In all this book is a very rare find in such lovely condition and would be an excellent addition to any collection or an ideal investment for the future!

The cover of the dustjacket is illustrated with the film still used on the cover of the first paperback edition.Thea von Harbou had given the manuscript of her novel to Fritz Lang in 1924. The two of them collaborated on the film script and from 1925 to 1927 Fritz Lang directed what was to become the most expensive German film productions of the time and a milestone of Expressionistic silent science-fiction movies at the same time. After the premiere the film was re-cut and shortened and only in 2010, after the rediscovery of archival material, Metropolis was reconstructed to its original version. Harbou's novel was published in installments starting in August of 1926 and as a paperback in the same year. The Japanese translation by Toyokichi Hata was published as volume 15 of the series "World Literature" in 1928. Bound in with Metropolis is the first Japanese translation of another German author, Anita Loos, with her 1925 novel "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes."Text in Japanese.         A collection of notebooks, offprints, and books from the estate of Max Newman.

      1928–59 1928 - Together, 29 items: 3 printed books, one manuscript notebook, one autograph album, and 24 offprints. Very light toning and spotting, extremities slightly bumped and occasionally a little worn, a few light stains, some minor nicks and chips to margins. Minor rust stains to wrappers and gutters of offprints. Generally a good state of preservation. Max Newman (1897–1984) was one of the most significant British mathematicians of his generation and a leading pioneer in modern computer science. After early pioneering work on combinatory (or geometric) topology, logic and Boolean algebras, he was elected FRS in 1939. During the Second World War, in 1942, he joined the government code and cypher school at Bletchley Park. There he realised that some of the methods used by the Bletchley codebreakers would be better done with the help of rapid, special-purpose electronic machinery employing paper tape and photoelectric cells; he and Alan Turing proposed the logical requirements for such machinery. These requirements formed the basis of practical machines, culminating with the Colossus, the world's first large-scale electronic computer. The section at Bletchley that used the machinery was headed by Newman and was called the Newmanry. From 1945 to 1964 Newman was the Fielden professor of mathematics at Manchester University, where he established the Royal Society Computing Machine Laboratory, which produced the first working stored program electronic computer in 1948. This collection of papers from his family includes an autograph album owned by his son William, who evidently took the opportunity of various conferences and academic gatherings to garner the signatures of some of the most important scientists of the mid-century, including that of Alan Turing. Newman remained close to Turing throughout his career. It was he who wrote the Royal Society's Memoir, and his wife, Lyn Irvine, who supplied the preface to Sara Turing's biography of her tragic son. The collection also includes one of Newman's own early notebooks, showing his intellectual concerns in the 1920s, and a number of offprints, including three of his own articles and a presentation copy. This was the last book published in Keats's lifetime, about which he had "low hopes, though not spirits … this shall be my last trial; not succeeding, I shall try what I can do in the apothecary line". Though Keats did not live to see his fame confirmed, this last collection is his greatest single volume, containing the magnificent series of odes on which his reputation now rests, as well as his longer narrative poems – two medieval romances: the chilling "Isabella or the Pot of Basil" and the gothic romance "The Eve of St Agnes"; and two mythological fantasies: the weird "Lamia" and the ambitious, Miltonic fragment "Hyperion".
