SHORT LIFE OF THE SOCIETY OF RUSSIAN SCULPTORS] Katalog 2-i vystavki skul'ptury Obshchestva russkikh skul'ptorov O.R.S. [i.e. The Catalogue of the Second Exhibition of Sculpture of the Society of Russian Sculptors O.R.S.]

Glavnauka, Moscow 1927 - 16 pp. 17,2x13,3 cm. In original printed wrappers. Very good, two close tears of the spine and some spots near the spine. One of 1000 copies. Very rare. The catalogue for the 2nd exhibition (of only 4 held by the Society) which took place in 1927 provides names of the members and exhibitors with the addresses, for each work materials and titles are named. The catalogue is supplied with a list of the members of the Society with their positions and the address of the board. The Society (ORS) was founded in 1926 by former members of the Moscow Union of Artists and Sculptors. The impetus for the creation was the success of the sculptural department of the OBIS exhibition held in early 1925. The Society consisted of almost all famous Moscow sculptors, and their ranks was regularly replenished by the graduates of the sculpture faculty of Vkhutemas-Vkhutein. About 20 people were constantly members, 10-15 more sculptors were involved as exhibitors (candidates). Many participants were simultaneously members of other societies and unions: Korolev and Kepinov - OMH, Chaikov - «4 iskusstva», Shadr - AHRR; however, the ORS flourished tolerance for various trends in art (including the «left»). The meetings were held mainly in the workshop of Ryndziunskaia. Reports were read and discussed on the problems of sculpture like Ternovets made a report «On Contemporary Sculpture in the West», architect Konstantin Melnikov with a report «On Cooperation of Sculptors and Architects in Contemporary Construction». The ORS didn't have a program but they were determined to strengthened position of sculpture as an independent art genre and paid a lot of attention to raising the level of professionalism. The ORS held 4 exhibitions: in March-April 1926 (the State Historical Museum), in April 1927 (the Museum of the Revolution), in June 1929 and June 1931 (both - the Pushkin Museum), which were partly financed by Glavnauka. The exhibition committee was engaged in selection of works for the exhibitions, at different times it included Vatagin, Efimov, Zlatovratsky, Chaikov, Domogatsky, Mukhina. If the first exhibition declared a sculpture as an independent genre with such strong works like "Flame of Revolution" by Mukhina, the second was supposed to consolidate its positions. For the opening of the 2nd exhibition the monumental Chaikov's sculpture «The Tower of October» was set in front of the Museum of the Revolution. The exhibition was attended by 33 masters who showed 133 works, including: «The Walking Elephant» and «Seated Peacock» by Vatagin, «A.S. Pushkin» by Domogatsky, "The Wind» by Mukhina, «Sitting Woman (Stasya)» by Lebedeva, «Molodaika» by Ryndzyunskaya, «Oktyabrenok» by Sandomirskaya, «Bather», «Mostostroitel» by Chaikov. Since the late 1920s, the ORS was attacked by Proletkult theorists for lack of «ideological content» and adherence to «bourgeois» forms of «sculpture». In the spring of 1932 the Society was liquidated. Worldcat locates only one copy in Getty Research Institute. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

New York, NY, July 28, 1927. 5.5X9. "Autograph letter signed ""Henrietta Szold"", one page, 5½"" x 9"", on stationary of the Hotel Alexandria, July 28, 1927, New York, NY, addressed to Elisha Friedman.Szold writes: ""Am I wrong in assuming that you expressed at least individual approval of the plan of discharging the deficit of the Zionist Organization of America as a first step towards making it an effective instrument for Palestinian work, when I spoke to you at the Physician's Dinner? At all events, I venture to ask whether you will help us do what we have undertaken by becoming a life member of the Organization? The plan is to secure two thousand such life members at $100 each. That will cover the deposit of $156,000 and give us a small reserve out of the interest on which we can supplement our normal revenues. Will you help?..."" A steadfast and loyal Zionist, Friedman was a member of the American Economic Committee for Palestine, on the Board of the American Friends of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and on the Finance Committee of the Palestine Endowment Funds and the Hadassah Medical Organization.         Salome

London: John Lane the Bodley Head, 1927. With 16 illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley, including the famous hermaphrodite plate on the title. Includes a list of the characters in the play, the cast of the first English performance of the play on May 10th and 13th, 1905, the facsimile of the handbill for Richard Strauss' operatic version, and the introductory note by Robert Ross. Publisher's cloth with elaborate gilt design on front cover, spine gilt; an excellent, very wide-margined copy. Originally printed in 1907, Salomé was certainly one of Beardsley's best-known illustrated works. Beardsley captures the underlying ideas addressing sexuality and gender roles throughout the story. He brings these things to life in his illustrations, starting as early as the title page, which has a beautifully detailed yet disturbing drawing of a demonic hermaphrodite. And the book ends ending with one of the most gorgeous scenes, wherein an androgynous Salome holds the prophet's decapitated head. The original 1891 version of the play was in French. The play tells in one act the Biblical story of Salome, stepdaughter of Herod Antipas, who, to her stepfather's dismay but to the delight of her mother Herodias, requests the head of John the Baptist on a silver platter as a reward for dancing the dance of the seven veils. Sarah Bernhardt was to star in the London debut of the play, but the 1892 rehearsals were halted by the censor, banning the production on the basis that it was illegal to depict Biblical characters on the stage. The play was eventually premiered in February, 1896, while Wilde was in prison. Beardsley (1872-1898) was a fashionable young London illustrator, whose first commissions had been from the publisher J M Dent for a version of the medieval poet Malory's Morte d'Arthur. Beardsley was asked to provide drawings for the first printing of Salome in 1893, but those illustrations were rejected. One of them did appear in an art publication, which was seen by Wilde (1854-1900), an Irish writer and poet and one of London's most popular playwrights, who wrote to Beardsley asking him to provide a suite of illustrations for an upcoming edition. Wilde sent Beardsley a copy of the original French edition, inscribing it: "For Aubrey: for the only artist who, besides myself, knows what the Dance of the Seven Veils is, and can see that invisible dance.".

        Now We Are Six.

London: Methuen & Co. Ltd,, 1927. Octavo. Original red cloth, title to spine gilt, vignette to covers gilt, pink illustrated endpapers, top edge gilt. Illustrated throughout by E. H. Shepard. Spine lightly faded, minor rubbing to extremities, faint browning to prelims and endmatter; an excellent copy. First edition, first impression. Following the success of When We Were Very Young Milne began planning a second book of poetry for children. In a January 1926 letter to his brother Ken he included it as number one in a list of "things which ought to be done": "A book of verses (about 15 done to date) to appear in 1927 or 1928" (Thwaite p. 293). By the time that Winnie-the-Pooh was published in late 1926 half the poems for this third book were already complete. Published on 13 October 1927 in an edition of 50,000 regular trade copies, it took only two months for Now We Are Six to eclipse the sales records of the previous two books. Full of Milne's charming verse, this collection is also notable for including many illustrations of Pooh, Piglet, and the other nursery toys, even when uncalled for by the poems.

Sand and Foam: A Book of Aphorisms.

William Heinemann, London 1927 - First edition of this powerful collection of aphorisms, poems, and parables from the author of The Prophet. Octavo, original cloth. Warmly inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Marie Luise, With a greeting across the garden, Kahlil.'' Also laid in is a autograph signed two paged letter on his letterhead, completely in Gibran's hand. It reads, "Good morning to you, dear Marie Lousie, and many blessings upon you. I have before me now a kindly number of your letters, and I feel quite rich. You see, I went to the country for a while, and while I was there no letters were forwarded to me. Everybody thinks that I must try and get out of the world as though I have never been in it. And they say that I am not well enough to do anything but lie on my back and be still. They are all stupid! I like the little photographs in your last letter very much. They make you seem quite dashing! The hair is infinitely better and, of course, more becoming. No doubt that at the end of October 'your tresses, like molten gold, falling from heaven to the earth,' will [be] a pleasant sight to the gods of this world--and the gods of other worlds. I am glad you still like the drawing. Who knows, I may make a better one next winter! And if I should do so, you would want it- and I will not give it to you- and that's that!!! Always your faithful Kahlil Boston Aug. 28 1927." In near fine condition. Sand and Foam' is a collection of profound and inspirational thoughts from the master of timeless wisdom, Kahlil Gibran, author of 'The Prophet'. Abstract and specific, amused and awed, direct and circuitous, this work draws together strands of advice and motivation to enrich the mind, heart, soul and life of the reader.         [Morte Darthur.] The Birth, Life and Acts of King Arthur,

London: J. M. Dent & Sons, Ltd.,, 1927. of his noble knights of the round table, their marvellous enquests and adventures, the achieving of the San Greal and in the end Le Morte Darthur, with the dolorous death and departing out of this world of them all. The text as written by Sir Thomas Malory and imprinted by William Caxton... now spelled in modern style, embellished with many original designs by Aubrey Beardsley. With an introduction by Professor John Rhys and a note on Aubrey Beardsley by Aymer Vallance. Large quarto. Original black cloth over bevelled boards, spine and front cover elaborately decorated in gilt, titles gilt to spine, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Woodcut half-title, gravure frontispiece with tissue-guard, woodcut title page, 21 full page wood engravings (including 6 double-page), numerous text illustrations, and approximately 365 repeated designs for chapter headings and borders, all by Aubrey Beardsley. Wear to extremities, notably at spine ends, foxing to prelims; a very good, partly unopened copy. First edition thus, with a foreword by Aymer Vallance, an eleventh chapter heading, and a note on the designs which were accidentally omitted from the first edition by R. A. Walker. This is the third Beardsley edition overall, and was issued in a run of 1,600 copies. Beardsley's Morte Darthur was commissioned by British publisher J. M. Dent in 1892 and first published in twelve monthly magazine instalments between June, 1893, and mid-1894. It "was one of the most original and certainly one of the most controversial of the nineteenth-century artistic reinterpretations of Malory" (Lupack). Beardsley's illustrations for the Morte established him as the voice of the 1890s and La Morte Darthur proved to be an immediate sensation upon publication. "Often shockingly overt in their sexuality and eroticism, the illustrations rejected the aesthetic of the Pre-Raphaelites who were Beardsley's original mentors and offered a revisionist and parodic treatment of their medievalism. Ultimately, Beardsley went far beyond his original intention to 'flabbergast the bourgeois' of his day; he also challenged generations of readers and artists to view Arthurian society through his own modernist lens" (ibid.).

List of the Officers of the Bengal Army, 1758–1834. Alphabetically Arranged and Annotated with Biographical and Genealogical Notices.

London: Constable & Company Ltd. [vols. 2 & 3]; Phillimore & Co. Ltd. [vols. 3 & 4], 1927-46 - 4 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, spines lettered and ruled in gilt, blind rules to covers, bottom edges untrimmed (fore edges also untrimmed in volumes 3 & 4). With the dust jackets for volumes 1 & 2. Edges spotted, endpapers browned, short split to vol. 1 inner hinge, vol. 3 very slightly sunned along extremities, vol. 4 spine rolled, the 2 dust jackets spotted, with slightly chipped and frayed spines and joint-ends, and a few other minor nicks or chips. An excellent, bright set. First edition of this extremely uncommon and indispensable reference work, containing over 7,000 records and much improved and expanded from its predecessor, Dodwell and Miles's Alphabetical List, which was published in 1838. There was an 18-year hiatus between the publication of the second and third volumes, and the dust jackets of the first two volumes state that the print-run was limited to 500 copies of each, of which 450 were for sale; the final two volumes were also issued in a limited edition, though the number of copies is not stated. We trace four complete sets in auction records in the last 50 years, with no recorded mention of the dust jackets. Hodson (c. 1883-1963) was an officer in the Indian Army. Leinenbände 1 Einband mit kleiner Restauration, ansonsten frisches Exemplar. Selten! Letzte - Neunte *), vollständig umgearbeitete Auflage!1.Bd.: Allgemeine Psychiatrie von Johannes Lange. 2. Bd.: Klinische Psychiatrie. I. von Emil Kraepelin. .. München, den 4. Okt. 1926. Dr. Kraepelin." Vorwort1. Auflage 1883 2. 1887 3. 1889 4. 1893 5. 1896 6. 1899 7. 1903-04 8. 1909 8. Nachdruck 1920 9. 1927.

Chamber Music (Joyce's First Book - Signed Association Copy from Fugitive Poet Merrill Moore to Original Organizer of the Fugitive Poet Meetings, Sidney M. Hirsch)

London: Jonathan Cape, 1927. Early Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 5 1/4 X 8 Inches. 40 PP. One of only 393 copies published by Cape. This is technically the fourth edition of James Joyce's first book. Each of the original three editions were published with similar limitations, so locating any of these early printings has become quite difficult. This particular copy bears an important association related to the Southern Fugitive and Agrarian Poet movement of the early 20th Century. Signed, "For Sidney Mitron Hirsh, with admiration and esteem - Merrill Moore, London. Sept. 4, 1928." Moore attended Montgomery Bell Academy and went on to Vanderbilt University in 1920. It was at this time that he joined in with the Fugitive Poets that included the likes of John Crowe Ransom and Robert Penn Warren. For a number of years, the "Fugitives" met on a bi-weekly basis at the home of local poet and eccentric character, Sidney Hirsch. These informal meetings at Hirsch's residence brought about monumental work from Allen Tate, Ransom, Penn Warren and Donald Davidson among others. This particular book not only represents the sharing of literary gold among the members of the Fugitive group, it is a tangible piece from the collection of the man who put the proverbial and literal "roof over the head" of the group. Original blue cloth boards. Slight toning to interior pages and a few dog-eared corners. Name and title embossed in gold gilt on the spine. Lacks DJ.
