One page, in ink, on sheet of blank stationery. 4to. "Had a great time in Chicago - great Rodeo. C.R. Williams got there one day late and somehow he was left out of the big money in bronk [sic] riding on that account. It sure was too bad and I thought something was going to be done about it, but I guess not. Williams was only there one day or so. Got to thinking about C.R.W's spurs and if you don't want to take responsibility of 'em send 'em to me. I'd sure like to hang 'em up here and Williams could take his time sending me the money … I'm going to stay here a few months yet - maybe till Christmas, then I might go to Hollywood … but I'm not going to run around anymore till then, I've got too much to do. Starting on a long novel now …"James signed "Bill James" when addressing his wife or close friends (see Frazier p. 170).C.R Williams from Calais, Montana was a rodeo star and fine bronc rider. He was a double for Tom Mix in the movies.

Goresti i skitania: Zapiski. 1854-1877 [i.e. Sorrows and Tribulations: Notes From 1854 To 1877].

Leningrad: Academia, 1927. FIRST EDITION. Small 8vo (150 x 110 mm). [2], 218, [6] pp. With a portrait of the author. Original Constructivist styled wrapper designed by Valentina Khodasevich (small tears of the overlapped wrappers, Soviet bookshopsÂ’ stamps on the recto of the back cover, a few spots on the back cover and extremities of the pages, few pages slightly loose, shadow on the first and last pages). Overall a very good copy, preserved in a fine fitted protective case. These memoirs are not only a portrait of a young provincial actress and her life, told simply and without embellishment, but also a collection of interesting details from theatre life of 19th century. Maria Gavrilovna Savina (1854-1915) was a renowned Russian actress. Born Maria Podramentsova into a family of stage actors, she debuted in Minsk in 1869, then joined the Mikhail Leontovsky troupe in Kharkov. While there, she married the actor N. N. Slavich who used the stage name Savin, and has been known as Marya Savina ever since. In 1874 Savina, then the leading actress at the Saratov Theatre, moved to Saint Petersburg to join the Alexandrinsky Theatre. It was there that she became famous, mostly for her parts in Alexander OstrovskyÂ’s plays (including Without a Dowry, Talents and Admirers, A Profitable Position, Hard-Earned Bread, The Last Victim, Vasilisa Melentyeva, Wild Thing), as well as in Nikolai GogolÂ’s Revizor, Ivan TurgenevÂ’s A Month in the Country and Leo TolstoyÂ’s The Power of Darkness, among others. Foreign playwrights of the time, such as Ibsen and Zuderman, also found in her an excellent performer. Some of the Russian writers of the time were mainly successful due to her performance. This first edition of 1927 was limited to 5100 copies and is now scarce. The significance of the text is such that it has been reprinted three times (1961, 1983 and 2004); of course none of these reprints feature the original impression of the justly famous Constructivist wrappers designed by Valentina Khodasevich (1894-1970), celebrated Soviet theater and graphic artist. This book was the third in the series "Theatrical Memoirs" edited by P.I Novitsky and E. Kuznetsov. The portrait of 17-years-old M.G. Savina is reproduced for the first time from her photograph taken in Kaluga in 1871; likewise, these Memoirs are fully printed for the first time from the manuscript in the Museum of Academic Theaters.

        The Complete Sayings of Jesus

HENRY FORDFord's signature on a presentation copy of The Complete Sayings of Jesus, with the name of recipient Harry Bennett, Ford's enforcer notorious for his violent repression of labor, engraved in gilt letters on front cover. An ironic gift, given Bennett's role!Book signed: "Henry Ford", 280 pages, 3¼x5½. Book titled The Complete Sayings of Jesus. Williamsburg, Massachusetts: D. H. Pierpont & Co., 1927. FIRST EDITION. Leather cover with gilt lettering. Signed on blank flyleaf. Edges, corners and spine at cover heavily worn and separating. Binding split at inside front and back covers. Accompanied by: B/w 8x10 of Ford and Bennett in Bennett's office. Heavily creased with major surface damage. Henry Ford (1863-1947), the Founder of Ford Motor Company, worked relentless to maximize efficiency and lower the price of his automobiles. Best known for the assembly line, Ford generated many other innovations which became standard, such as the dealer franchise system. The Model-T Ford, introduced in 1908, was affordable, easy to drive and to repair, and it revolutionized American life. Ford's other contributions include the first commercial airliner, the Ford Tri-Motor (1926). Although inclined to pacifism, Ford re-tooled his factories to make a major contribution to production in World War II. Some of Ford's personal views, especially his anti-Semitism, must be noted on the negative side of the ledger. Ford treated his workers very well, with high wages, a 40-hour week and profit-sharing. However, he was adamantly opposed to labor unions, however, and relied on Harry Bennett (1892-1979), head of his Service Department, to intimidate union organizers with strong arm tactics, including the beatings delivered at the "Battle of the Overpass" (1937). When grandson Henry Ford II assumed control of the company in 1945, his first act was to fire Bennett. Two items.

Au pays des Aïnou. Exploration anthropologique

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Putnam, UK 1927 - 1st Edition 1927. This the first trade edition printed at the same time and very different to the two limited editions. Much harder to find especially with the Hestar Sainsbury designed wrapper. Book is very good++ and bright. Page edges age toned. Contents good. The wrapper is near very good and quite bright. Miniscule loss to spine tips. Edges lightly rubbed and nicked. A few small closed tears to edges. Spine and edges age toned/darkened. Quite a example of a very un-common edition.         Fiesta [The Sun Also Rises]

Jonathan Cape, London 1927 - First edition, review copy married to a rare second printing dust jacket. Book faded at the spine and top third of rear board, offsetting to the front free endpaper, and dustiness at edges. Binding sound with contents clean and complete - very good. The jacket is moderately creased across its entirety with a small short tear at the top of the front panel. The spine is a shade faded, but withal it’s a bright, unclipped example in very good condition. ************ The first printing of this U.K. edition of Hemingway’s masterwork was published in June 1927, while the second appeared shortly thereafter either in August or September.(Grissom) With their mixed usage of the terms “printing” and “publication,” Jonathan Cape made life difficult for bibliographers. *********** Both first and second printing jackets are rare. A second printing jacket recently cleared $8K at auction, and the spine looked like it was rubbed with a block of razor blade-filled cheddar cheese. This one can be owned with peace of mind - an opportunity to possess a rare Hemingway piece, particularly as a rewarding alternative to its bank account depleting, jacketed American counterpart.
