        Typed letter signed.

[Washington], 9. IV. 1927. - Small 4to. 1½ pp. on 2 ff. To Mrs. Roland G. Hopkins from the Women's City Club of Boston: "Your letter [.] concerning your friend, Professor Salvemini, has been on my desk for several days. My delay in answering was caused by an embarrassment in which I am sure you will sympathize as your letter informed me he was anxious to secure information 'in connection with President Wilson's attitude towards Italy'. These are such very difficult and vital days for Italy - and as I had none of Mr. Wilson's papers to substantiate my recollections - I deemed it unwise to make myself his interpreter. Through Mrs. Brandeis, who thoroughly understood my position, this has been explained to Professor Salvemini, and a suggestion made that he get in touch with Mr. Ray Stannard Baker in whose possession all of Mr. Wilson's papers now are and where I am sure he will get a very sympathetic hearing [.]". - Edith Bolling Wilson was the second wife of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson. - On stationery with embossed address.         Withering of the Fig Leaf

London: The Hogarth Press,, 1927. Octavo. Original orange wrappers, printed paper label to cover. Wrappers rubbed, partially tanned and slightly separating from the spine, spots of dampstain and some scratches to upper cover, contents spotted. A very good copy. First edition, first impression of this rare volume that was withdrawn from publication. A few copies were distributed for review and to the author's friends, but he was warned that the perceived anti-Catholic nature of his poetry could cause him to lose his job as a Carnegie librarian, and he had the Woolfs suppress the book at the last minute. It appears that no deposit copies were sent out, as the acquisition date of the British Library copy was 1980 (Woolmer 141).

LESS THAN NOTHING - OR THE LIFE AND TIMES OF STERLING FINNEY.

The New Yorker, 1927]., [New York: - First and only edition of E. B. White's first book. Illustrated with photographs of posed manikins. There is no author, publisher or date noted in the book but Katherine Romans Hall, in her bibliography of White's works, notes that White indicated "These Sterling Finney advertisements were written by me. They ran in the magazine in the early years when it was trying to promote its circulation. I posed the dummies--figures I found in Wanamake's department store. The ads, of course, were parodies of a certain kind of 'culture-made-easy' --- Ross was delighted with them and they caused quite a lot of talk." Of course, the implication of each very amusing essay was that reading the New Yorker puts you well on the road to wealth and social success. The book was printed and published by the New Yorker advertising department and sent to agents and customers for goodwill purposes. Issued without dust jacket. The corners of the boards are a little rubbed, otherwise very good or better; and very scarce to rare. No copy at auction in the last 38 years. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
