RUTH SNYDER'S OWN TRUE STORY. Published Complete for the First Time Anywhere. Written by Herself in the Death Cell. 25¢

[New York]:: King Features Syndicate,. (1927).. 11-1/4" x 8-1/2". 1st edition. 47, [1 (blank)] pp.. Orange pictorial paper wrappers, printed in white with b/w drawing of an incarcerated Snyder to center & facsimile signature to lower third.. Old repair to spine paper, as well as center of front wrapper. A. Good-plus copy of a truly rare, ephemeral item.. A very scarce first-hand account of life on Death Row, by the first woman ever executed by electrocution. Ruth Brown Synder and her lover, Judd Gray, were convicted, in 1927, of murdering Snyder's husband; after almost a year of appeals, both were put to death at Sing-Sing prison on January 12, 1928. This memoir was written by Snyder during her Death Row residency, using a typewriter given to her by the journalist Jack Lait, who was the only reporter to be granted an interview with Snyder, a close connection demonstrated herein, as Lait also writes the Preface to the work. The crime itself soon mushroomed into a national sensation, as well as assuming cause-celebre status for death-penalty opponents, with Synder being portrayed in the popular media as a victim of her passionate obsession with Judd [NB. While incarcerated, she received 107 proposals for marriage]. Lait, who would later use his Snyder interviews as a springboard to a hugely successful career in celebrity journalism, did much to inflame the public sympathy & interest with the publication of such statements like the following [quoted from the Preface]: "She bristles with courage, she has poise, assurance, no end of intelligence... she loves like fire and she hates like T.N.T. ... More power and good luck to her, guilty or not. It would be a waste and a shame to burn up such a woman ... for dramatic, poetic purposes, alone, I say --- VIVE LA RUTH!" Despite its tabloid appearance, and obvious 'rush to press' aura, the present work is a substantial first-person narrative, filled with pathos, self-awareness, and flashes of grim humor. This being said, we must acknowledge Lait looms in the background as a possible ghost writer, however, presuming Snyder was indeed the author, we cannot deny Lait's public assessment of her as intelligent, witty, and being possessed of "it". Ironically, this woman's execution led to the creation of one of the most iconic photographs of the 20th Century: her final seconds inelegantly caught on film by Tom Howard, reputedly a Chicago Tribune reporter. Howard clandestinely photographed the moment by use of a miniature camera strapped to his ankle. The next morning, the photograph blazoned across the front pages of the New York Daily News; to this date it is the only photograph of a person being electrocuted in such somber circumstances. Howard's camera now resides in the collections of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. Unsurprisingly, the Snyder & Judd case inspired a number of fictional works, most notably (and literally) James M. Cain's great noir novel "Double Indemnity", which was later adapted to film by Billy Wilder. In many ways, however, Snyder's story served as archetype for the 20th Century's conception of the hard- boiled femme fatale, and Snyder's exploits can be seen influencing such later efforts as "The Postman Always Rings Twice", "Body Heat", and "Chicago". Never re-published, the LoC on-line catalogue shows no copies. Not found in ABPC, nor via AmEx. Bookseller catalogues searched, and there were many, show no offerings. Institutionally, we find just 3 holdings: 2 via OCLC [Rochester & U Miami, OH] plus, via that old stalwart reference, the NUC- University of Oregon. A rare ephemeral item from the annals of True Crime, and uber-text from one of pop-culture's most enduring and influential 20th C. narratives. . Illustrated with 10 b/w images from photographs, including all the key players in the crime & trial.

Über den anschaulichen Inhalt der quantentheoretischen Kinematik und Mechanik

FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING of Heisenberg?s Uncertainty Principle, one of the most significant discoveries in all of modern physics and ?one of the most famous and important aspects of quantum mechanics,? (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Since the moment of publication, the Uncertainty Principle marked the end to deterministic theories of physics and has played a critical role in any and all scientific theories or technologies that follow from quantum mechanics. In its simplest form, Heisenberg?s Uncertainty Principle, or quantum mechanical principle, states that it is not possible to simultaneously determine the position and momentum of a particle. Moreover, ?the more precisely the position is determined, the less precisely the momentum is known in this instant, and vice versa? (?Uber den anschaulichen,? 1927). This principle applies even to particles that are not interacting with other systems, in other words, that are NOT being "observed." Heisenberg?s discoveries punctured the firmly held belief that the universe and everything in it operates like clockwork. To predict the workings of the "clock," one needs to measure its qualities and parts at a specific point in time. Classical physics assumed that the precision of measuring is theoretically unlimited. But Heisenberg stated that since you could never with great certainty measure more than one property of a particle, you could only work with probability and mathematical formulations. This was ?the first paper in which the question of what is observable and what is not is quantitatively discussed in the context of quantum mechanics? (Pais, Niels Bohr?s Times, 304). The implications of Heisenberg?s efforts were extraordinary and in 1932 he received the Nobel Prize. CONDITION & DETAILS: Octavo. Volume 43 in full. Bound in contemporary full black cloth with gilt-lettered spine. Ex-libris stamp on front and rear of title page; no spine markings whatsoever. Very light edge wear to the boards, with the binding solid and tight. The interior is bright and clean throughout. Very good condition.

There, the Gill family shared a house with Elizabeth Bill, who was Gill's secretary and mistress during this period and who may have been the model for this drawing. An Elucidation. Printed in Transition

Paris: Transition, April, 1927. 8 page pamphlet, staple-bound. Original yellow wrappers printed in black. Housed in a custom artist's solander case. Wrappers tanned and very lightly rubbed. An excellent copy. First separate edition, offprinted from the Transition literary magazine. Presentation copy inscribed by Stein on the verso of the upper wrapper, "To Jamie Sabartes from Gertrude Stein". Sabartes was a poet and the friend and long-time assistant of Pablo Picasso. Stein's poem "An Elucidation" was originally printed in the first issue of Transition, which "while containing the correct words, presented them in the wrong order (through an inadvertence in the printing establishment)"(editor Elliot Paul's introduction to the present). This offprint was included as a supplement loosely inserted in the first issue to correct the mistake and is now rare, particularly so inscribed.

The Complete Works of John Galsworthy Grove Edition

      - London - William Heinemann, 1927 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The Complete Works of John Galsworthy, Grove Edition, including The Forsyte Saga, twenty-two volumes. Bound in leather with gilt lettering. Complete in 22 Volumes. Includes: Caravan Volumes I to III: A Stoic, The Apple Tree, and The First and the Last. The Forsyte Saga Volumes I to III: The Man of Property, Indian Summer of a Forsyte and In Chancery, and Awakening and To Let. A Modern Comedy Volumes I to III: The White Monkey and A Silent Wooing, The Silver Spoon and Passers By, and Swan Song. Also Saint's Progress, Villa Rubein, The Burning Spear, The Inn of Tranquillity and Verse New & Old, Satires and A Commentary, On Forsyte 'Change, The Island Pharisees, The Country House, Fraternity, The Patrician, The Dark Flower, The Freelands, and Beyond. All volumes of The Forsyte Saga and A Modern Comedy include a fold-out Forsyte family tree. John Galsworthy (18671933) was a novelist and playwright, whose place in the history of English literature rests on the vast social chronicle comprising his three trilogies, The Forsyte Saga (1922), A Modern Comedy (1929) and End of the Chapter (1935). He returned to the Forsyte family in 1918 with a short story Indian Summer of a Forsyte. A chance remark by his god-daughter, Dorothy Ivens, on reading the story led to In Chancery (1920), which concludes at a clearly defined point of change with the funeral of Queen Victoria. To Let (1921), set in 1920, is placed precisely in the contemporary historical moment, and written in a more impressionist style, capturing the post-war atmosphere of restless gaiety, with its undercurrent of nihilism. Condition: The bindings are tight and firm. There is slight wear to the extremities, including slight bumping, and some slight marks to the boards. The Man of Property has a split on the tail of the spine which has been repaired. Internally the pages are bright and clean. The First and the Last has some spotting to the first and last couple of pages, and Fraternity has very occasional spots. There is a small signature in ink on the front free endpaper of Swan Song and a small ink mark to the rear free end paper of Volume 19. There is some slight damage to the exposed edge of the fold-out family tree in Volume 13. Overall the condition is very good indeed..

        Vendanges *

? Evening Flight

1927. Drypoint. Signed in pencil. 21 in an edition of 70. Image measures 7.75 x 9.75". Sheet measures 11 x 13". This scarce etching shows a group of birds flying above a peaceful New England lake. In the foreground, a bird skims along the surface of the water with its wings outstretched. Above, several more birds glide through the evening air, its dimming haze beautifully depicted with cross-hatching. The shadowy trees and grasses reflected in the water indicate the setting of the sun. The print bright impression in excellent condition with full margins and no chips or tears. Frank W. Benson (1862--1951) was an American Impressionist and Realist artist known best for his work in painting, watercolor, and etching. He got his start as a portrait and mural artist for the Library of Congress and found success as a painter of Academic Realist portraits. Around the turn of the century, his summers in New Hampshire inspired him to take an interest in plein-air Impressionism, with a particular interest in the capture of light and natural surroundings. Yet it is perhaps for his etchings of wildlife for which Benson is most famous, and in particular his etchings of wild fowl, which won him both critical and popular acclaim as well as a place in art history as one of the foremost printmakers of the 20th century. This beautiful image of birds is a hard-to-find example of Benson's prized work.
