The Kelly family had one of the longest connections in the history of the binding trade in London, having been founded in 1770 by John Kellie, as the name was then spelled. The binding firm was carried on by successive members of the family into the 1930s. William Henry Kelly significantly developed the company in the first half of the nineteenth century, followed by William Henry, Jr., Henry, and Hubert Kelly, who took control in 1892, taking the firm into the twentieth century…The development [during the 1880s] that came to be known as Kelliegram was one of the bindery's most notable, and the popularity continues today as demonstrated by the prices Kelliegram bindings command at auction and in the rare book trade" (Dooley, Kelliegram Bindings, Brynmawr Library).

About Fine in a scarce, Very Good example of the dustwrapper. First British Edition, preceding the American edition by a few days, of this winner of Wilder's first of three Pulitzer Prizes. INSCRIBED and SIGNED on the the front endpaper: "For Mrs. Isaacs/with the affection/of one of her/boys/Thornton/Lawrenceville/November/1927." The recipient appears to be Edith Isaacs, editor of THEATRE ARTS magazine, whom he befriended in the early 1920s while teaching at the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey. Isaacs offered much encouragement to Wilder, including recommending that he apply for a Guggenheim Fellowship in order to finish THE BRIDGE OF SAN LUIS REY, for which he was declined.

        A Collection of Motivational Poster Cards (Poster Sales Letters)

      C.J. Howard. Chicago. C.J. Howard. 1927. Collection is contained in original imprinted cardboard C.J. Howard packaging box. 7"x4.75" when closed (horizontal folding card).7"x9.5" when opened. Each card presents a striking Art Deco multicolored lithograph and various coloured borders and decorations printed upon folded heavy card stock. Early in the 1920s Charles Mather, who worked for his family&#146;s Chicago printing house, the Mather Company, took an idea brought to him by one of the firm&#146;s salesmen, Charles Howard Rosenfeld. What Rosenfeld proposed was a series of posters whose focus was to give workers incentive to work better and to work harder. Mather called these prints, &#147;Constructive Organization Posters.&#148; These posters were made to be placed on office and factory walls and were expected to inspire workers to do their best. Mather sold his posters by subscription and produced more than 300 varieties between 1923 and 1929.In 1925 Rosenfeld and another employee broke from Mather to form their own company, the C. J. Howard Company, to sell incentive cards to be displayed on desks in a re-useable easel. These cards and posters were printed as multicolored lithographs to produce easily readable images accompanied by tagline messages promoting such admirable qualities as teamwork, punctuality, loyalty, and safety." -Rockwell Museum "At the dawn of the 20th century, managers had been skeptical about using visual images as communication tools because their appeals to the emotions contradicted prevailing Protestant notions of self-discipline. By deploying motivational posters and illustrated booklets managers began to loosen their former dependence on rationalism and to explore the potential of aesthetics to regulate the emotional environment. All works by Tsiolkovski are rare and important.Tsiolkovski was a pioneer in the field of experimental aerodynamics; by, among other things, building one of the world's first wind-tunnels, he derived a number of highly important laws of aerodynamics and is one of the founders of modern aerodynamics. In 1921 he came up with the idea of making a vehicle of transportation that was carried on a cushion of air. It is in this work he develops the idea (see D.S.B. XIII: 484).The father of modern rocketry, Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovski (1857-1935), is probably most widely known for his works on rocket propulsion, however his contributions to several fields of science have been immense and of exceedingly seminal character. Deafened at the age of nine and as a consequence thereof unable to go to school, he was forced to learn everything on his own hand. His father, a forester, was fond of scientific experiments, and though not wealthy, he had books on science and natural history. Tsiolkovski began by reading all books he could find on these subjects and as a consequence was able to construct quite complicated devices for measuring distances and many other things. Having seen how gifted his son was, his father sent him to Moscow, where Tsiolkovski spend all three years in libraries, receiving no teaching but his own, but still succeeding in taking a degree in physics from the university. T. can thus be seen as a purely self-taught man. After Moscow he settled in the small city of Borovskoye, where he taught physics at a school, spending all his spare time conducting experiments and writing about them. He devoted his intellect mainly to three scientific problems of the greatest importance at the time: The aeroplane, the (long-range) rocket and the all metal dirigible. Self-taught as he was and unable to come in touch with new publications in his fields of interest, he began with nothing and made all necessary calculations himself. Calculations and experiments were always at the base of his scientific works, and no conclusions were derived from intuition and guesswork. He was the first in the world to solve numerous problems concerning his three main interests, but unable to be recognized by the tsar-regime and considered, at best, a dreamer and a utopian, the struggle for his inventions was long and hard. Aged 24 he was the first in the world to formulate the possibility of applying the principle of reactive motion for flight in a vacuum, thus presenting a simple plan for a spaceship. He established the possibility of space travel by means of rockets, and is thus called the father of rocketry. He is also called the father of the all-metal dirigible. He is the first to propose and state that liquid fuel is necessary for spaceflight. He was the first in the world to make calculations for the air-jet and turbo-prop-planes, and it is in his works we find the most complete elaboration of the theory of rocket propulsion for many years to come. "In his works on rocket dynamics Tsiolkovsky, the first in the history of science, calculated the efficiency of the rocket and pointed out the advantages of rocket motors at high velocities." T. saw it as necessary step for mankind to explore and inhabit outer space and nothing could prevent him from working on the possibilities of this; in short, among many other things, we owe to him the fundamental principles of rocket dynamics.After the Revolution T. became a member of the Academy, was allotted a personal pension in 1921, and became able to devote himself entirely to his scientific work. Now his contemporaries finally saw him as the founder of a new domain of human knowledge, a new science, he was, and he was awarded the Red Banner of Labour Order for outstanding services to his country

Wrappers a bit soiled, and first leaves of the entire issue with a few tears, far from affecting text, and a brown spot to first few leaves. Otherwise internally fine. Inner hinge weak. Pp. 26 - 39. [Entire volume: 70, (8), (1, -colophon) pp.].. The extremely scarce first printing, in German, of Sartre's third publication, "The Theory of State in modern French Thought". The work appeared simultaneously in German, French, and English, and all three publications are of the greatest scarcity. Contat and Rybalka were unable to find the French edition for the bibliography of Sartre's works and had to do with the English version. They state that the "Revue universitaire internationale" is not to be found anywhere, in no French libraries: "Il nous a été impossible de retrouver l'édition francaise de cette revue qui était publiée à Paris par la Fédération universitaire internationale simultanément en francais, anglais et allemand. Le titre de l'édition francaise est: "Revue universitaire internationale". Elle ne figure au catalogue d'aucune bibliothèque de France." (Contat & Rybalka).The present article is a brilliant and well founded essay of state theory by the 22 year old Sartre, published 16 years before his philosophical breakthrough, "L'Etre et le Néant" from 1943. Sartre was urged by his fellow opinionator Daniel Lagache to write the article. Lagache was the editor of the "Revue Universitaire Internationale", in which the article appeared. Tredje ark signeret af Nielsen selv.Three leaves. Original handwritten and signed manuscript in with additions and corrections in Carl Nielsen's own hand. All three leaves folded once in the middle. Third leaf signed by Nielsen.. Brevet er en opfordring til københavnske musikelskere til at høre den berømte Wiener kvartet Kolisch-Kvartetten der skulle spille i byen den 29. november 1927. Nielsen skriver blandt andet: "Der forestaar det Kjøbenhavnske Musikpublikum en / sjælden Begivenhed! Det er virkelig lykkedes at faa / denne berømte Wiener-Kvartet til at optræde her / i byen." Nielsen er yderst begejstret for kvartettens musik og musikere, og om dem skriver han: "[...], så er det her fire besynderligt fanta= /stiske moderne Sjæle der usynligt farer ud og ind og ægger, kærtegner, bider og klapper vort Øre og / vort Sind, saa vi bestandigt er midt i en hel ny / Virkelighed".Kvartetten opførte blandt andet Nielsens egen Opus 44 (for stryger-kvartet). (Fellow, Carl Nielsen til sin samtid, P 140).Carl August Nielsen (1865 - 1931) er den mest betydelige og internationalt anerkendt danske komponist, og han er i dag bedst kendt for sine seks symfonier. Han var 62 da han skrev nærværende artikel, og havde på dette tidspunkt skåret kraftigt ned på sin musikalske aktivitet, som følge af et alvorligt hjerteanfald to år tidligere. Han forsatte dog med at komponere musik frem til sin død, og i 1927 udgav han sin selvbiografi Min Fynske Barndom, hvilket sammen med Kolisch-Kvartetten opførelse af sin strygekvartet i F-dur var det der optog ham mest i denne period. MAYLANDER spine with author, title, date and place in gilt, five raised bands extending to front and back panel simulating clasps, all edges gilt, caramel morocco doublures surrounded by gold fillet, brown and blue silk brocade flyleaves, paste-paper flyleaves, ex-libris on lower front paste- paper, signed on lower front turn-in, "Rel. E. Maylander. Dor.," original wrappers bound in, morocco-edged paste-paper slipcase, signed in gilt, "Maylander." spine a bit rubbed on raised bands. Illustrated with one original etching (frontispiece)and 24 original lithographs, plus two additional suites (the ordinary issue had one additional suite), this is the second Vlaminck title published by Seheur. Mourlot pulled the lithographs. Vlaminck (1876-1958), one of the more prolific members of the School of Paris, exhibited with the Fauves in 1905. His earlier work is generally more sought after than his later studied landscapes. This lovely book -- with its strong graphic images -- gives reason to that prejudice.       John Rodker London: John Rodker, 1927. THIRD ENGLISH EDITION. Hardcover. Slate blue paper-covered boards. Minor offsetting to front and rear free endpapers. A very good copy in the original dust jacket (grey paper, printed in black, Wyndham Lewis blurb on front panel) which is missing a chip at top of spine panel and also has a piece of the top of the spine panel floating loosely (neither affecting any lettering). Wilson (A1d) states that this edition was not issued in jacket. The first UK edition (1915, John Lane) was made up from sheets of the American Grafton Press printing (300 copies with cancel title pages). Then an edition printed in England was published by John Lane in 1920. This, then, is the third UK edition, but the second to be actually printed in England. Obviously an uncommon item in jacket. Wilson, who actually owned a copy of the Grafton Press first edition in jacket, had not seen an example of this jacket.

Der zweite umfangreiche Teil des Buches (...) wurde speziell für die Serie der Bauhausbücher geschrieben und illustriert? (Holstein). - Malewitsch erhielt 1927 die Erlaubnis, nach Westeuropa zu reisen. Grund dafür war, neben einer Ausstellung in Warschau, eine Exposition seiner Werke im Rahmen der ?Großen Berliner Kunstausstellung?. Hier lernte er Schwitters, Arp u. Moholy-Nagy kennen. Bei seinem Besuch des Bauhauses kam es schließlich zu dem Entschluß, die Schriften ?Einführung in die Theorie des additionalen Elementes der Malerei? u. ?Suprematismus? in der Reihe ?Bauhausbücher? zu veröffentlichen. (Vgl. Tendenzen der Zwanziger Jahre 1/170). - Das Werk wird in nahezu allen maßgeblichen Schriften zur Kunstgeschichte des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts genannt; von Werner Haftmanns ?Malerei im 20. First edition, off-print, of Heidegger's main work, "Being and Time", -one of the most influential philosophical works of the 20th century, and most likely the most influential work of continental philosophy in the 20th century. This is the special printing of the first appearance of the work. It was published in "Jahrbuch für Phänomenologie und phänomenologische Forschung", edited by Edmund Husserl, also in 1927, and the special edition appeared simultaneously. The work was issued in original wrappers and in publisher's cloth binding. This is the original cloth-binding issue. The work is difficult to find in good condition."Sein und Zeit" is without doubt Heidegger's most important work, and it is also his first significant academic work; it earned him the professorship at the University of Freiburg. Because of this work, Heidegger's contribution to the world of continental philosophy must be said to be unsurpassed

      NP Paris NP 1927vg 6" x 3 3/4". Original finished drawing in India ink matted and framed in modern black wood, not examined out of the glass. This exceptional and fascinating art work has been made according to Remizov's favorite method of composition, which is a mixte medium collage, a technique of gluing superimposed multiple layers of paper, with frames or borders defining each individual drawing and the work as a whole. The Bestiaire depicts three allegoric animal characters, of which one can be identified as a hog. Remizov's predilection for fantastic, distorted, fragmented and non-figurative images is clearly shown in this drawing. This work is dated "Paris 1927" and the caption is in Russian and French. This stunning and unique piece of Art is in near fine condition.
