Original cloth with lettering stamped in yellow on upper board and spine; first issue dust jacket with illustration of mosquitoes. Spine tips and corners lightly rubbed, else fine. Dust jacket rubbed (mostly on rear panel); lightly scuffed along joints; a little chipping at spine tips and top corners; VG+, colors remain bright. In custom chemise and slipcase. Faulkner's second novel, satirizing a group of New Orleans artists, arteests (dilettantes), and socialites as they yacht on Lake Pontchartrain. A departure from the fraught, dark tragedies that came to be amongst Faulkner's masterpieces, this novel shows him barbed and sardonic, snickering a bit -- and the novel's reception was less than keen. It's been said that Faulkner's falling out with Sherwood Anderson (who had been his mentor) was due to his portrayal of Anderson as the character Dawson Fairchild. Nor were the editors at Boni and Liveright pleased, leaving much of Faulkner's original typescript on the cutting room floor -- expunging passages deemed homoerotic -- and eventually also changing the dust jacket from its strikingly illustrated red mosquitoes to an image of the yacht's passengers (the irritating figural mosquitoes) playing cards.

      A fine copy in original wrappers of this fundamental paper introducing Bohr's statement of his 'complementarity' principle, the basis of what became known as the 'Copenhagen interpretation' of quantum mechanics. "From the epistemological point of view, the discovery of the new type of logical relationship that complementarity represents is a major advance that radically changes our whole view of the role and meaning of science. In contrast with the nineteenth-century ideal of a description of the phenomena from which every reference to their observation would be eliminated, we have the much wider and truer prospect of an account of the phenomena in which due regard is paid to the conditions under which they can actually be observed - thereby securing the full objectivity of the description" (DSB).<br/><br/> The concept of complementarity started to develop in Bohr's mind during discussions with Heisenberg in Copenhagen early in 1927, when Heisenberg was preparing for publication his famous paper on the uncertainty principle. In fact, the published version of Heisenberg's paper contains a note added in proof which mentions 'recent investigations by Bohr [that] have led to points of view that permit an essential deepening and refinement of the analysis of the quantum mechanical relationship attempted in this work'. <br/><br/> "Bohr presented his ideas on complementarity for the first time at an international congress of physics in Como in the fall of 1927, commemorating the centenary of Volta's death. On this occasion, he stressed that in the quantum world, contrary to the classical world, an observation of a system can never be made without disturbing the system. But how can we then know the state of the system? The quantum postulate would seem to imply that the classical distinction between the observer and the observed was no longer tenable. How then would it be possible to obtain objective knowledge? Bohr's reflections on these and related questions led him to introduce the notion of complementarity as denoting the use of complementary but mutually exclusive viewpoints in the description of nature. Two years later, he defined the complementarity principle as 'a new mode of description... in the sense that any given application of classical concepts precludes the simultaneous use of other classical concepts which in a different connection are equally necessary for the elucidation of phenomena'... The wave description and the particle description are complementary and thus in conflict. But Bohr argued that the physicist is still able to account unambiguously for his experiments, for it is he who chooses what to measure and thereby destroys the possibility of the realization of the conflicting aspect... <br/><br/> "The complementarity principle became the cornerstone of what was later referred to as the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics.       A fine copy of his classic text on the foundations of quantum mechanics. In the early years of quantum mechanics several distinct formulations were developed; Heisenberg's matrix mechanics, Schrödinger's wave mechanics, and Dirac's more general transformation theory. However these theories lacked strict mathematical rigor (only much later through Laurent Schwartz's theory of distributions did Dirac's theory achieve this). Quantum mechanics is one of the fields of science which was fortunate to attract the attention of a mathematician of von Neumann's character. Von Neumann showed, in a paper published 1927, how generalized infinite-dimensional Euclidean spaces (function spaces) and linear operators provide the proper mathematical framework for quantum mechanics. Von Neumann was strongly influenced by Hilbert's program of axiomatizing the fields of science. The axiomatic approach which von Neumann takes in his theory has ever since dominated modern physics and functional analysis, and it was von Neumann who coined the term 'Hilbert space'. Von Neumann's work in this field culminated in this monograph which in addition to the earlier paper includes his important considerations, inspired by Bohr and Heisenberg, regarding the problem of measurement, in particular von Neumann's disproof of hidden variables..       Sacramento: Hapeman-Gee Printing Co.. 1927. Printed in blue ink on cardstock. Approximately 14" x 11.25". Tiny tears or small creases, else a near fine copy. The information "A Play with a Message" has been added over an original line (that seems like it might have been misspelled). An influential play by Karel Capek, which premiered in Prague in 1921, most famous now for introducing the word "robot" (derived from the Czech noun "robota" meaning "labor"). The play, in which androids who are at first content to work for their human creators decide to rebel, made its U.S. premiere in 1922 and supposedly Spencer Tracy made his stage debut as one of the robots in an early American production. .

Decorative calligraphic titles, indices, and key maps. Contains a set of 76 detailed maps along with changes recorded on paste-on correction slips through 1974. Quarter leather binding with gilt title on front and spine. Large tear to spine of original protective canvas cover. This volume includes the area between Rockaway and Lefferts Boulevards, and also shows the widened Woodhaven Boulevard and the Long Island Railroad intersection. The Sanborn map collection consists of a uniform series of large scale maps, dating from 1867 to the present depicting the commercial, industrial, and residential sections of some twelve thousand cities and towns in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The maps were designed to assist fire insurance agents in determining the degree of hazard associated with a particular property and therefore show the size, shape and construction of dwellings, commercial buildings, and factories as well as fire walls locations of windows and doors, sprinkler systems, and types of roofs. The maps also indicate widths and names of streets, property boundaries, building use, and house and block numbers. They show locations of water mains, giving their dimensions, and of fire alarm boxes and hydrants. Sanborn maps are an unrivaled source of information about the structure and use of buildings in American Cities. The collection includes some fifty thousand editions of fire insurance maps comprising an estimated seven hundred thousand individual sheets. The Library of Congress holdings represent the largest extant collection of maps produced by the Sanborn Map Company. The majority of the maps were acquired by the Library through copyright deposit, but the collection was substantially enriched in 1967 when the Bureau of the Census transferred to the Library of Congress a complete set. The 1,899 loose-leaf binders were particularly noteworthy because they included later editions than those previously acquired by the Library. The Bureau of the Census set of maps had been regularly updated by printed, paste-on corrections supplied by the Sanborn Map Company, whereas the Library of Congress copies were retained in the form in which they were copyrighted.

First edition of Hesse's famous and exceedinly popular novel which "by common consent, represents the canonical contribution of the German novel to High Modernism." (Cornils, A Companion to the Works of Hermann Hesse, p. 172). "No author has ever equaled the sensation created by German writer Hermann Hesse among young people over thirty years after the publication of his novel." (Johnson, The social impact of the novel, P. 172). In 1933 Hesse was accused by the Nazi Press for poisoning the minds of youth with his Freudian psykoanalysis and a few years later all his books were banned throughout Germany and many of them destroyd. Combining autobiographical and psychoanalytic elements, the novel was named after the lonesome wolf of the steppes. The story in large part reflects a profound crisis in Hesse's spiritual world in the 1920s while memorably portraying the protagonist's split between his humanity, and his wolf-like aggression and homelessness. The real breakthrough and period it later came to represent was the 1960ies in the USA; Fifteen million copies of Steppenwolf were sold between 1961 and 1971and hence became "one of the most bizarre literary trends" (Johnson, The social impact of the novel, P. 173). The fascination with Hesse became known as a cult especially among the hippies and was a reaction among the young in the US to societal pressures for middle-class conformity.The name Steppenwolf has become notable in popular culture for various organizations and establishments. In 1967, the band Steppenwolf, headed by German-born singer John Kay, took their name from the novel

Number XXIII out of 50 (+12 "hors commerce") copies on "Madagascar" (prémier papier - first paper) out of a total of 3.862 copies (62 copies were printed on "Madagascar", 170 on "vélin pur fil" and 3.650 on "alfa satiné")."The "Clerc" is what Benda conceived the intellectual to be, someone disengaged from the mere contingencies of the existence and fighting for ideals that went beyond the demands of a given moment in space and time. In violent and brilliant invective, he attacked the intellectuals of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries for having fallen short of this ideal by becoming the devoted advocates not of ideals, but of groups or existences, material and transient, such as a nation or a social class. The title of Benda's manifesto became a kind of catch phrase which, by a curious irony of fate, inverted its original sense, and came to be used as a term of reproach for the intellectuals who shut themselves off from the march of events in an ivory tower. "La Trahison des Clercs" achieved a world-wide popularity and was translated and reprinted over and over again... After the war, some of his magic seemed to have departed... but "La Trahison des Clercs" continues to be read; and its invigorating attack on over-involvement deserves not to be forgotten." An influential play by Karel Capek, which premiered in Prague in 1921, most famous now for introducing the word "robot" (derived from the Czech noun "robota" meaning "labor"). The play, in which androids who are at first content to work for their human creators decide to rebel, made its U.S. premiere in 1922 and supposedly Spencer Tracy made his stage debut as one of the robots in an early American production. .

Fine in very near fine dustwrapper but for a small chip on the crown, but with the primarily white jacket bright and fresh. The exceptionally scarce jacket is of interest in its own right as it contains blurbs from Robert Benchley, Edna Ferber, Sidney Howard, Marc Connelly, George Gershwin and several other notables. A fantasy for the stage based on a passage in Mr. and Mrs. Haddock Abroad, a humorous book by Barry's friend Donald Ogden Stewart, the expatriate novelist and screenwriter. Barry and Stewart were longtime friends and collaborators. Stewart won an Oscar for his screenplay based on Barry's Philadelphia Story, as well as starred in another Barry play, Holiday, where he played a character based on himself. According to Brendan Gill: "Stewart received much praise for his skill in depicting himself." .

      Newtown, Montgomeryshire: The Gregynog Press, 1927 An edition limited to just 150 copies, 250*190 mm. In cream limp vellum, some slight, light, discoloration, as is normal with vellum. Spine with title in gilt. Internally, [4], 41 pp, [3], 25 wood engravings, (hand coloured by Maynard and Bray), chapter openings in pale blue, initial letters in red and paragraph marks in red, drawn with a quill by HW Bray, with its card slipcase. This binding represents the only use of vellum by the bindery and was not a material in which Fisher was familiar. The text, freely collated by Ernest Rhys, is based upon the Latin Life by Rhygyfarch (1057-1099) & upon the later lives. The picture of St. David on the title page was drawn from brass, dated 1476, in Hereford Cathedral. Probably the most difficult Gregynog title to obtain.         Autograph Letter Signed

      1927. October 1, 1927. Written to horror writer and artist Clark Ashton Smith ("C.A.S."), one of the circle of friends and fellow writers known to posterity as the Lovecraft Circle, and one of the writers whose work extended the Cthulhu Mythos that Lovecraft had invented and which then became part of the fictional milieu of a whole group of writers for Weird Tales and the other pulps in the 1930s and after. Four pages, closely written on two sides of two 6" x 9" sheets; approximately 1300 words. Lovecraft begins by admiring the paintings by Smith that Donald Wandrei had sent him ("Truly, I have never before seen such profoundly soul-moving glimpses of alien worlds with haunted skies and jungles of prismatic madness. It is such a series of forbidden revelations as one might spy through some magic window of the sort described in Dunsany&#39;s &#39;Book of Wonder&#39;..."). He discusses his travels, particularly to areas in New England that are predominantly unchanged for the past 150 years, and sympathizes with Smith&#39;s struggles to write and paint, bolstering his friend by calling him more successful than himself in his "ability to produce creative work... I haven&#39;t very much energy or perseverance -- the uselessness of everything, including even aesthetic effort, overshadows my consciousness & cooperates with my native indolence in defeating all progressive or constructive developments." He mentions the first issue of The Recluse magazine, which published his essay "Supernatural Horror in Literature" and recommends to Smith that he read E.R. Eddison&#39;s now-classic The Worm Ourobouros, which had just been published in the past year, "which combines some gloriously imaginative phantasy with an exquisitely lyrical prose style." He recommends the new Franz Werfel, recounts his disappointment in the new Robert Chambers book, and about his own writing he says "I haven&#39;t written any stories since &#39;The Colour Out of Space&#39;, but hope to get around to a hell-raiser or two in the later autumn." A highly personal, informative letter to one of his closest writer friends: Smith and Lovecraft first "met" in 1922 when Lovecraft wrote him a fan letter, and they began a long and intimate correspondence until Lovecraft&#39;s death in 1937. They are considered, in retrospect, the two most outstanding figures of the classic era of American horror fiction, with Lovecraft at the pinnacle and Smith a somewhat distant second. Signed "HPL". Raskens var den första bok som Moberg gav ut under eget namn och brukar därför kallas hans andra debut. Den innebar hans genombrott som författare.
