Autograph musical working manuscript of the Epilogue for Violoncello, Piano and Tape. Titled by the composer "Epilog "Peer Gynt' " at head of first page. Unsigned and undated, but Hamburg, February 1993.

. 4 pp. (471 measures). Large folio (425 x 230 mm.). Unbound. Notated in both pencil and ink on 32-stave "Star Nr. 37" music manuscript paper in the composer's small, dense hand. An active composing manuscript of the majority of the work, presenting material for the cello at rehearsal number 4 to several measures after rehearsal number 54. With numerous deletions, changes and corrections. Slightly worn. In very good condition overall.. Epilogue, one of Schnittke's most expressive chamber works, was written for the famed Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich (1927-2007), who gave the work its first performance with Schnittke's wife Irina at Evian on Lake Geneva on May 20, 1993. The work is an arrangement of the final part of Schnittke's ballet Peer Gynt (1986). Schnittke is often considered to be the successor to Shostakovich as Russia's premiere composer. His early music showed the strong influence of Dmitri Shostakovich, but he went on to adopt a very polystylistic approach to composition. As his health worsened, however, he adopted a somewhat bleaker but more accessible style; some Schnittke scholars have argued, in fact, that it is the composer's late works that will ultimately be considered as the most influential of his entire output.

[Wien], 1927 - 1929.. Alle Blätter in Passepartouts.. Alle Radierungen eighd. signiert und betitelt. Hds.

For Freedom: A Biographical Story of the American Negro

Philadelphia: Franklin Publishing and Supply Co, 1927. Philadelphia: Franklin Publishing and Supply Co, 1927. First Edition. Fauset was a noted civil rights activist, educator, anthropologist, and folklorist, half-brother to the novelist Jessie Redmon Fauset and an active figure in the Harlem Renaissance. For Freedom was his first book, essentially a history of the American Negro written for black school children. The book provided biographical sketches of Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, and George Washington Carver (among others), illustrated throughout, with a special section at the end entitled The New Negro, highlighting many of Harlem Renaissance figures who were Fauset's contemporaries. Given what was likely available to black school children at the time, Fauset's book was ground-breaking work. Reprints abound, but the first edition, with the striking Aaron Douglas cover design, is a notable rarity. WORK p.474. First Printing. Octavo (20cm); bound in purple and orange decorative cloth, with titles stamped in orange on spine and illustration by Aaron Douglas on front panel; 200pp; illus. Spine lightly sunned, though lettering is still perfectly legible; brief abrassion at lower third of spine panel, with the spine ends slightly nudged and light rubbing along the edges. Offsetting to pastedowns and endpapers, with light soil to upper edge of textblock; Very Good+.

        Plan de Paris

New York.: Washington Square Book Shop., Copyright 1927.. New York.: Washington Square Book Shop.. Copyright 1927.. Color pictographic / pictorial map, 27 1/2 x 36 inches on sheet 28 1/4 x 36 1/2 inches, professionally mounted on linen. Small area of loss at two lower corners has been infilled, light wear along folds and at fold intersections restored, all faults now only visible on close examination. Clean, bright image. An extraordinarily handsome and richly printed pictorial map of Paris, published by the Washington Square Bookshop in New York at the height of the American love affair with Paris. It was designed by Hungarian artist Ilonka Karasz. In the 1981 obituary published in The New York Times she was identified as "the founder-director of Design Group Inc., which was composed of craftsmen, designers and artists. Miss Karasz was an expert in decorative arts, specializing in pottery, tiles, wallpaper, toys and lamps. She was engaged with various manufacturers in the production of fabrics, rugs, silverware, china and furniture. Her covers for the New Yorker began in 1924, and the last one was published in 1973. There were 186 published covers, including many New York scenes. She also designed book jackets for various publishers." The Paris boulevards are printed in a rich gold with major Paris monuments are depicted. The decorative border includes lists that locate Theaters, Museums, Hotels, Restaurants, Shops, Art Galleries, Monuments, Banks, Bars, Churches and Book Stores. Among the list of bookstores is Shakespeare and Company (12 rue de l’Odeon) the rendezvous, in the 1920s, of many "Lost Generation" American authors including Ernest Hemingway, Kay Boyle, Djuna Barnes, F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Dos Passos, Gertrude Stein and others. James Joyce is said to have used the premises as his office. .

Nos actes nous suivent. Two Volumes.

Librairie Plon, Les Petits-Fils de Plon et Nourrit [1927], Paris - First edition, one of 15 on papier de Chine de tete copies, from a total issue of 400. Bound by H. BLANCHETIERE in full navy morocco, edges with gilt double fillets, panelled spines with gilt lettering, doublures with panels of pink moire surrounded by navy morocco with gilt fillets, guards also of pink moire, marbled inner leaves, a.e.g., slipcases. Original printed wrappers and backstrip bound in, fine - a beautiful set. Paul Bourget (1852-1935) was a novelist and critic of penetrating psychological analysis. His novels, which describe the life of the leisured classes, almost always deal with a dilemma of conscience and/or some sociological problem. The moralizing tone especially evident in his later writings may be attributed to his growing Roman Catholic and Royalist sympathies. Perhaps because of this tone, Bourget's criticism is often now valued more highly than his fiction. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        To The Lighthouse

London: Published by Leonard and Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press, 1927 First edition, first printing. One of 3,000 copies. Publisher's bright blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. A very good copy, with some minor wear to the extremities, light toning to the spine, spotting to the page edges and front endpapers, former owner's signature dated in the year of publication to the front pastedown, a few scattered spots to the otherwise bright and clean pages. A tight and presentable copy. Kirkpatrick A10a. Woolmer 154. To the Lighthouse takes place in three parts in three different time periods. The first section takes place before World War I in the afternoon and evening, while the second part covers a span of ten years, during which time WWI occurs and many of the previously introduced characters die. The final section takes place in the morning as the remaining characters come to terms with their losses, each of which were directly or indirectly related to the Great War. Through this sequence, Woolf skillfully creates a cohesive narrative that counteracts the traditional assumption that life after WWI was completely unrelated and detached from the antebellum period. Like many of Woolf's novels, the text is centered around philosophy and perception rather than action sequences and dialogue. To the Lighthouse remains one of the most acclaimed English language novels as well as one of both Virginia and Leonard's favorites. Additionally, To the Lighthouse is perhaps Woolf's most autobiographical novel, with the heads of the Ramsay family representing her own parents.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.
