Adieu *

A Guide to the American Battlefields of Europe

Washington, D.C.: U.S Government Printing Office, 1927. Washington, D.C.: U.S Government Printing Office, 1927. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED Presentation Copy "To Will Hays, As a souvenir of our visit to the Battlefield of the Marne, with sincere good wishes, John J. Pershing April 28, 1928". Near Fine, small rubs to leather covers at spine tips, vertical crease front board, the boards being rather pliable due to the leather covers being mounted over thin cardboard . 282 pages with 3 internal fold-out maps and 3 separate maps in leather folder mounted inside rear cover. Interior of the book is Fine, as are the maps. An incredible Association Copy, John Joseph "Black Jack" Pershing was a general officer in the United States Army who led the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. Pershing is the only person to be promoted in his own lifetime to the highest rank ever held in the United States Army, and was a mentor by the generation of American generals who led the United States Army in Europe during World War II, including George C. Marshall, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar N. Bradley, and George S. Patton. Will Hays managed Warren G. Hardings successful campaign for the Presidency of the U.S. and was subsequently appointed Postmaster General. After a year in that position, he resigned to become most famously known as the first President of Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA), which under his guidance published a blacklist of actors and workers studios should not hire, inserted moral clauses into actors' contracts, and published an informal list of suggested guidelines for film producers. When the Catholic Church formed its Legion of Decency and threatened nationwide boycotts of movies, Hays installed a more formal production code, called the Hays Code( later simply "The Code"), which became the virtual law of Hollywood until the 1960s. A great piece of U.S. History linking two major figures from the first half of the 20th century ! . SIGNED AND INSCRIBED. First Edition. Leather. Near Fine/No Jacket, As Issued. Presentation Copy.

        Revolt in the Desert

London - Jonathan Cape, 1927. London - Jonathan Cape, 1927 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Revolt in the Desert by T. E. Lawrence in unclipped dustwrapper with sixteen plates and a foldout map to rear. Fourth impression. Thomas Edward Lawrence, CB, DSO (1888 - 1935), known professionally as T. E. Lawrence, was a British Army officer renowned especially for his liaison role during the Sinai and Palestine Campaign and the Arab Revolt against Ottoman Turkish rule of 1916 - 18. The breadth and variety of his activities and associations, and his ability to describe them vividly in writing, earned him international fame as Lawrence of Arabia. Revolt in the Desert was an abridged version of Seven Pillars, which he began in 1926 and was published in March 1927 in both limited and trade editions. He undertook a needed but reluctant publicity exercise, which resulted in a best-seller. Again he vowed not to take any fees from the publication, partly to appease the subscribers to Seven Pillars who had paid dearly for their editions. By the fourth reprint in 1927, the debt from Seven Pillars was paid off. As Lawrence left for military service in India at the end of 1926, he set up the Seven Pillars Trust with his friend D. G. Hogarth as a trustee, in which he made over the copyright and any surplus income of Revolt in the Desert. He later told Hogarth that he had made the Trust final, to save myself the temptation of reviewing it, if Revolt turned out a best seller. Previous owner's ink inscription dated 1927 to front free endpaper. Condition: In a cloth binding with unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, in excellent condition with only minor shelfwear, dustwrapper has edgewear and small closed tears, age toning and occasional marks. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and generally clean throughout but with foxing to endpapers and spotting to text block edges and a small ink annotation to front free endpaper. Cranford

London - Macmillan and Co., 1927. London - Macmillan and Co., 1927 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Mrs Gaskell's best-known novel about the fictional town of Cranford, with her first novel, Mary Barton. The fictional town of Cranford is closely modelled on Knutsford in Cheshire, which Mrs Gaskell knew well. The book has little in the way of plot and is more a series of episodes in the lives of Mary Smith and her friends, Miss Matty and Miss Deborah, two spinster sisters. The major event in the story is the return to Cranford of their long-lost brother, Peter, which in itself is only a minor portion of the work, leaving the rest of the novel at a low-key tone. WIth numerous illustrations by Hugh Thomson, and a preface by Anne Thackeray Richie. Condition: In a cloth binding. Externally smart, aside from some sunning to the front board. Some minor shelfwear to the extremities also. Internally, firmly bound. Ink inscription to recto of front free-endpaper. Pages are bright and clean, save for ink spills to the text block edge. Fifteenvolumes of The Works of John Galsworthy, Grove Edition, including The Forsyte Saga. Bound in cloth with gilt lettering. Volumes 2, 4, 5, 7,and 11-21 of the Works. The Forsyte Saga Volumes I to III: The Man of Property, Indian Summer of a Forsyte and In Chancery, and Awakening and To Let. Also: The Country House, The Patrician, The Dark Flower, Beyond, The Inn of Tranquillity and Verses New & Old, Satires and ACommentary, The White Monkey, The Silver Spoon, and A Modern Comedy Volume III: Swan Song. All volumes of The Forsyte Saga include a fold-out Forsyte family tree. There is a Times Book Club label on the rear pastedown of Satires. John Galsworthy (18671933) was a novelist and playwright, whose place in the history of English literature rests on the vast social chronicle comprising his three trilogies, The Forsyte Saga (1922), A Modern Comedy (1929) and End of the Chapter (1935). He returned to the Forsyte family in 1918 with a short story Indian Summer of a Forsyte. A chance remark by his god-daughter, Dorothy Ivens, on reading the story led to In Chancery (1920), which concludes at a clearly defined point of change with the funeral of Queen Victoria. To Let (1921), set in 1920, is placed precisely in the contemporary historical moment, and written in a more impressionist style, capturing the post-war atmosphere of restless gaiety, with its undercurrent of nihilism. The Man of Property (which became the first volume of The Forsyte Saga, but was a separate novel in itself), was widely regarded by contemporaries as confirming the end of Victorianism. It is a typically Edwardian novel in its focus on the conflict between property and art, and draws its emotional power to some degree from Galsworthy's own family relationships, particularly his affair with Ada Galsworthy. The Forsyte family represents the distinctive ideology of the English commercial upper-middle class. Its instinct of possession, its sole means of self-definition and evolution, is distilled in the portrait of the dry solicitor and art collector Soames Forsyte and his tortured relationship with his wife, Irene. Soames's obsessive love for his daughter Fleur is pursued in the second trilogy, A Modern Comedy (1929), comprising The White Monkey (1924), The Silver Spoon (1926), and Swan Song (1928). Galsworthy's fiction centres on his own social class, whose instincts and ideology he largely repudiates. He is critical of its insularity, materialism, aesthetic deficiency, chauvinism, restrictive moral codes, and imperialism. His exploration of the febrile world of 1920s society includes his treatment of the general strike, in which Fleur and her friends are caught up, and culminates with the death of Soames. Though critical interest had waned, this second trilogy was extremely popular, and Swan Song, with its greater social depth, emotional range, and narrative subtlety, is among the best of Galsworthy's writing - DNB. Condition: The bindings are tight and firm. There isslight wear to the extremities, includingslight bumping, and some slight marks to the boards. Internally the pages are bright and clean. There is some foxing to the endpapers of A Stoic and The Apple Tree. There are occasional spots on The Forsyte Saga Volume II. There is very slight browning to the endpapers of The Dark Flower. There is some slight browning and chipping to the exposed edge of the pull-out family tree in Awakening To Let. Overall the condition is very good indeed..

Appointed a federal judge in 1948, Medina presided over the controversial 1949 Smith Act trial of Communist conspirators in New York City. He served on the bench for the next 40 years. To the Lighthouse

London: Published by Leonard and Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press, 1927. London: Published by Leonard and Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press, 1927 First edition, first printing. One of 3,000 copies. Publisher's bright blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Near fine, with some light wear to the extremities, minor toning to the spine, newspaper article "To the Lighthouse" by Denys Val Baker adhered to the front pastedown, offsetting from the newspaper to the front free endpaper, similar offsetting to the rear endpapers, otherwise bright and fresh pages. Overall, a clean and pleasing copy. Kirkpatrick A10a. Woolmer 154. To the Lighthouse takes place in three parts in three different time periods. The first section takes place before World War I in the afternoon and evening, while the second part covers a span of ten years, during which time WWI occurs and many of the previously introduced characters die. The final section takes place in the morning as the remaining characters come to terms with their losses, each of which were directly or indirectly related to the Great War. Through this sequence, Woolf skillfully creates a cohesive narrative that counteracts the traditional assumption that life after WWI was completely unrelated and detached from the antebellum period. Like many of Woolf's novels, the text is centered around philosophy and perception rather than action sequences and dialogue. To the Lighthouse remains one of the most acclaimed English language novels as well as one of both Virginia and Leonard's favorites. Additionally, To the Lighthouse is perhaps Woolf's most autobiographical novel, with the heads of the Ramsay family representing her own parents.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

        The Women at Point Sur

New York: Boni & Liveright 1927 - First edition, first printing. Inscribed by Jeffers to the front free endpaper: "Inscribed for James Hopper and Mattie Hopper, / with some memories of a friendship that dates / from our first year in Carmel. / With affectionate good wishes, / Robinson Jeffers. / Tor House, Carmel, California / July, 1927". Publisher's black cloth over purple boards, lettered in gilt; in the original salmon dust jacket, lettered in green and dark red. Near fine, with some light wear to the extremities, a hint of vertical creasing to the spine, a hint of spotting to the rear pastedown, otherwise bright and clean pages; unclipped dust jacket, with some wear and minor chipping to the extremities, short losses to the spine head and top corners, some toning to the spine, light rubbing to the hinges, a hint of spotting to the otherwise bright and clean panels, small hole to the top edge of the rare panel not affecting the lettering. A bright and pleasing copy. This copy is inscribed by Robinson Jeffers to his friend and fellow author James M. Hopper. Jeffers inscribed this volume at Tor House, the home he built for his family in Carmel-by-the-Sea in California and the location at which he wrote the majority of his novels. Both Jeffers and Hopper, along with their contemporaries George Sterling, Upton Sinclair, Sinclair Lewis, and Jack London, were part of the group of authors that helped establish Carmel as a literary and artistic refuge in Monterey County. Although neither was a native of California, both Jeffers and Hopper ultimately settled in Carmel. The Women at Point Sur is Jeffers' longest and most ambitious work - "a magnificent narrative almost as long as a novel, fully as interesting as any novel can be, and infinitely more stirring to the mind and senses than any prose." In addition to the titular poem, this volume contains a prologue, which is also written in poetic verse. Unlike many of his other works, The Women at Point Sur is laden with the philosophies of Friedrich Nietzsche. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
