        Meet Mr Mulliner

McClelland & Stewart 1927 - I am not sure but it looks as though prior to 1927 Herbert Jenkins bound the Canadian editions in their format with MCclellend and Stewart prelims and their badging on the spine of the book .There seems to be a bit of a miss mash with the early editions until they bound their own editions.I'm guessing that both publishers waited until they were satisfied that there was a worthwhile market before M and S took over ,but at this stage theres not enough information to be sure and as these copies rarely turn up it will need more time .         Giants in the Earth: A Saga of the Prairie

Harper & Brothers, Publishers, New York 1927 - The special presentation edition, bound in finely woven tan cloth with impressionistic cloud designs in soft colors, especially on the rear panel. The delicate colors on the front boards have faded away. With a paper label on the spine: title and author and presentation edition, autographed. On the limitation page: "This Presentation Edition of Giants in the Earth is limited to one hundred copies signed by the author of which this is number 13. Signed brightly in blue ink "O.E. Rolvaag." The binding is worn, faded and lightly shaken. Internally very good and clean. "In his novels, Rölvaag was primarily concerned with the theme of immigration, which he explored in his largely autobiographical Letters from America (1912) and The Boat of Longing (1921). He took a one-year leave of absence from St. Olaf College and lived in lonely cabin in Minnesota to write the epic that would become Giants in the Earth. He originally wrote all his novels in Norwegian and then helped translate them into English. Two novels, I de dage (In Those Days) and Riket grundlaeges (The Kingdom Is Founded) were first published in Norway in 1924 and 1925. They were then translated into English and published in the United States in one volume, Giants in the Earth (1927)."         Candide Or All For The Best With 10 Etchings By Clara Tice.

New York: The Bennett Libraries Inc., [Printed in Haarlem by Johann Enschedé], 1927. - 2 Parts in 1 [continuous pagination]. pp. 119, [1]blank], [title leaf], 123-182, [7]index. with half-title. titles in red & black. 10 hand-coloured etchings by Clara Tice. tissue guards with legends. contemporary full dark red morocco, front cover & spine decorated with 3 gilt-stamped nudes after designs by Tice, t.e.g., others uncut (a few gatherings roughly opened, lower edge of 1 plate bit tatty). First Edition with Illustrations by Clara Tice [1888-1973], Limited to 1000 copies, this one of 250 on deckle-edge Pannekoek paper (copy unnumbered). This is an exact reprint of the earliest English text, printed in Holland by the firm of Johann Enschedé En Zonen of Haarlem, which was founded in 1703. It was entirely set by hand from type cast by the Dutch printing firm from original Didot matrices. Clara Tice was famous for her bohemian dress and lifestyle, her dadaist affiliation and her nudes. In 1915, Tice "became an overnight sensation" when one of her early exhibitions, at Polly’s Restaurant in Greenwich Village, drew the venom of anti-vice crusader Anthony Comstock. Tice was later to remark that Comstock "was some press agent". Frank Crowninshield, editor of Vanity Fair magazine, where Tice was later employed for a brief period as a staff artist, published photographs of Tice’s nudes and announced a mock trial to be held in her defence, to which the public was invited to act as the plaintiff’s attorney, witness, jury, and judge. "She will be tried and therefore acquitted of the charges of having committed unspeakable, black atrocities on white paper, abusing slender bodies of girls, cats, peacocks and butterflies."         REVOLT IN THE DESERT

New York George A. Doran 1927 - First American edition, rarest and preferred issue with the Kennington decorated endleaves which had been designed for the 1926 issue of SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM and with the additional plates and illustrations. VERY RARE ISSUE with 24 illustrations on full-page plates and with 18 b/w line cuts from the 1926 SEVEN PILLARS not in any other issue or edition of REVOLT IN THE DESERT. With a folding map in black and red tipped in at the rear of the volume. 8vo, publisher’s original tan polished buckram lettered in gilt on the spine. xvi, 335 pp. including the index. A fine and handsome copy with light evidence of age mellowing. VERY SCARCE FIRST EDITION WITH THE ADDITIONAL ILLUSTRATIONS AND THE KENNINGTON DECORATED ENDLEAVES. This is the first publicly issued text of SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM prepared by Lawrence after the private printing of that book and edited by him for the general trade. Jonathan Cape had planned a new edition of REVOLT IN THE DESERT to come out after Lawrence death, but Lawrence’s estate permitted instead the printing of the trade edition of the full text of SEVEN PILLARS instead. Thus, the work in this form was obtainable for only a very brief period of time. Copies of the book with the additional decorations and illustrations are rarely encountered.         Three Lives

London: John Rodker, 1927. THIRD ENGLISH EDITION. Hardcover. Slate blue paper-covered boards. Minor offsetting to front and rear free endpapers. A very good copy in the original dust jacket (grey paper, printed in black, Wyndham Lewis blurb on front panel) which is missing a chip at top of spine panel and also has a piece of the top of the spine panel floating loosely (neither affecting any lettering). Wilson (A1d) states that this edition was not issued in jacket. The first UK edition (1915, John Lane) was made up from sheets of the American Grafton Press printing (300 copies with cancel title pages). Then an edition printed in England was published by John Lane in 1920. This, then, is the third UK edition, but the second to be actually printed in England. Obviously an uncommon item in jacket. Wilson, who actually owned a copy of the Grafton Press first edition in jacket, had not seen an example of this jacket.
