THE CASE OF SACCO AND VANZETTI WITH A TYPED LETTER SIGNED

1927. FRANKFURTER, Felix. THE CASE OF SACCO AND VANZETTI. Boston: Little, Brown, And Company. Small 8vo., yellow-orange cloth, titles stamped in black; 118 pages. First Edition. With a full-page typed letter signed from Frankfurter, dated June 1, 1927 and on Harvard Law School stationery, laid in, to "My dear Newcomb." Frankfurter states he remembers Newcomb "vividly and with pleasure." He thanks Newcomb for thinking of him in connection with "Mr. Schultz's review" which is "stimulating and provocative." "After all, injustices due to man's passions, even on the part of those who wield the criminal machinery, is not too unknown in history to make us too surprised at its recurrence. What is important, is how the community responds to the disclosure of such injustices after reason has had time to catch up with unreason. The one heartening aspect about the whole business is utterances like Mr. Schultz's, written by lawyers in different parts of the country. With relatively rare exceptions, our own bar has been either silent or hostile. The guild spirit, if nothing else, has leaned too heavily upon them." Frankfurter asks Newcomb to send his regards to Mr. Schultz "for putting so effectively the ideas and impulses so inadequately expressed in my book." Letter is very nice with usual mailing folds but no tears. There are several pencil notations (by Newcomb?) on the front pastedown with some additonal pencil notations in the book. Book is very good with minor soiling covers (contents clean & tight). $750.00.

Oka shoin, Tokyo 1927 - Large octavo. 4, 24, 835, [1]pp. 3/4 leather over olive cloth, with gold lettering on spine and title laid on front cover. Japanese ethnographer Shizuo Matsuoka (1878-1936) was sent to Micronesia after Japan took control of the area by Mandate of the League of Nations in 1920. Some customs categorized as superstitions are reasonable" (Ibid: 94). Covers rubbed with some discoloration spots. Moderate and sporadic foxing throughout. Folding map split along inner margin, but present. Text in Japanese. Set of twenty-six issues of the experimental literary journal Transition, founded by Eugene Jolas and Maria McDonald in 1927 and edited by Jolas with Elliot Paul, Robert Sage, and James Johnson Sweeney. Devoted to avant-garde poetry and prose of the early twentieth century, the publication featured contributions by visual artists, critics, writers, and political activists and was primarily distributed through Shakespeare and Company. Of particular interest is issue 26, with a cover by Marcel Duchamp that depicts at comb floating in midair. This set includes issues 1 through 27, published between 1927 and 1938. With work by Gertrude Stein, William Carlos Williams, Kay Boyle, James Joyce, Kurt Schwitters, Hugo Ball, Hans Arp, Franz Kafka, Dylan Thomas, Aragon, and Fernand Léger, Pablo Picasso, Yves Tanguy, Joan Miró, and Hans Arp, among many other seminal figures of modern art and literature. Inexpensively produced journal, with noticeable defects in the entire collection; issue 3 is missing its cover, though all other issues are intact. Collection uniformly good to very good.         Autograph and typed letters concerning the founding and early development of Warm Springs, Georgia

Warm Springs, Georgia, 1927. 8pp., in Roosevelt's hand, 10pp. typed. 7p. are on Warm Springs letterhead. 4to. Letters gave been hole-punched and bear marks from previous stapling. Half-inch tear to one of the typed pages and some chipping to 3 pages of memos. In quarter red morocco slipcase. "We are Concerned with the Greatest Good to the Greatest Number" A small but exceptional collection of memos and drafts providing rare insight into how FDR ran the Georgia Warm Springs, a Georgia resort that he took over and developed into a retreat for polio sufferers after founding the Warm Springs Foundation in 1927. The collection comprises 5 parts: 1. Autograph manuscript (not signed) in FDR's hand, on Warm Springs letterhead. 5 pp. "To all patients?" "The Foundation is conducting the treatment, and the patients come here for a definite purpose. The greater part of each day is taken up with the treatment, and while there is no wish to curtail personal liberty or recreation, it is essential to prevent fatigue and to work for the highest degree of health for all concerned. That is why simple rules are necessary. Many patients or their families will perhaps consider that circumstances warrant special exceptions to the rules -- but this would soon lead to confusion and discrimination. That is why all patients whether of full age or minors, whether living in the colony, hotel or in private cottages are asked to live up not only to the letter, but to the spirit of the rules. We are concerned with the greatest good to the greatest number."2. Autograph manuscript (not signed) in FDR's hand. 3pp. "Memo" 3. Typed manuscript, dated January 1, 1928. 8pp (4 drafts). "Rules for Guests Living in the Colony." 4. Typed manuscript, dated July 7, 1927, on Georgia Warm Springs Foundation letterhead. 1p. "Subject: The Comfort & Happiness of Patients," signed in type "E. T. Curtis, Mgr." Reading in part:"A prime reason for the operation of Warm Springs by the Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt and associates, is the establishment of the Cure. The happiness of all patients, whether in the Hotel, in the Colony, or in private cottages, is of the first importance and will be so considered by all members of the staff." 5. Typewritten Newsletter "The Daily Gossip," dated July 6, 1927, on the verso of Georgia Warm Springs letterhead. Whimsical report of the disappearance and subsequent location of two of the resort's patients who happened to be young, male, and inebriated.Roosevelt acted as General Manager in charge of setting policy during first year of the foundation, the period during which these letters were written. He would ultimately meet his end there two decades later, and it was subsequently renamed the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation. This collection of documents outlines policies and reflect Roosevelt's enthusiasm for the resort's therapeutic capabilities, from which he felt he had already benefitted, as well as his sense of great responsibility for visiting patients. Letters and documents including details of Roosevelt's time at Warm Springs are rare.
