        THE FINANCIER: A Novel.

Boni & Liveright,, New York: 1927 - A completely revised edition of his third book. INSCRIBED, "For Brills son Edmund from Theodore Dreiser 1928." The first of the trilogy on Frank Cowperwood, a financier and businessman during an epic period of American history, from the Civil War through the end of the century. Dreiser based the character on Charles T. Yerkes, a traction magnate who had a well-documented and colorful career as an organizer of companies, an art collector and womanizer. Dreiser is still considered a trailblazer in our literature for his honest treatment of American life and the vagaries of human nature. The latter, of course, caused him many problems with the critics of the time. The book is a little cocked and cover has a small mark on bottom right corner, otherwise very good to fine, clean, bright copy. Lacking dust jacket. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Riggs, of Cherokee descent, was the first Native-American writer to achieve widespread success as a playwright. This was his first published play, making this almost certainly the first published play by an author of Native-American descent (long predating the works of Hanay Geiogamah and others). His play Green Grow the Lilacs was later adapted by Rodgers and Hammerstein into their first collaboration, the musical play and subsequent film Oklahoma! A very uncommon title. .

        Revolt in the Desert

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1927. Quarto. Finely bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in near-contemporary tan full morocco, spine in compartments with raised bands and gilt title direct, board edges and turn-ins gilt-ruled, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Coloured portrait frontispiece, 10 coloured plates, 8 black and white plates, one folding map at the end (preserved in this copy in a marbled sleeve to the rear pastedown). Spine mildly faded, a few minor marks to covers, internally clean but for some interesting marginal annotations, an excellent copy. The four folds of the rear folding map are here mounted on this canvass, and annotated in red ink. Large paper issue of the first edition, limited to 315 numbered copies, of which 300 were for sale; this copy is number 186. The costs for production of the 1926 Seven Pillars of Wisdom had ballooned to such an extent that Lawrence was contemplating selling either his library or some of his property to clear the debt. Eventually he settled on the publication of an abridgement, undertaken in 1926 by Lawrence himself with the help of some of his fellow servicemen, an earlier attempt by Edward Garnett having been set aside. Published in March 1927 in Great Britain and America, in both limited and general issues, three impressions were soon sold out and two more quickly added. The profits from this publication made the fortunes of the Cape publishing house. This copy bears a fine near-contemporary binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, and a number of interestingly informed annotations to the margins of the text, and also to the folding map at the rear.

Less than Nothing - or The Life and Times of Sterling Finny

New York: The New Yorker, 1927. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. E. B. White's (1899-1985) first book, a collection of advertisements that ran in The New Yorker that White wrote anonymously and photographed himself with mannequins from Wanamaker's Department Store. [Hall A1] White, ever the humorist, inscribed this copy to himself: "To E.B. White without whose skill with a camera, untiring desire to make money and patience, I and Flora would still be in Wanamaker's where we belong --Sterling Finny". Taped to the title page verso is a typewritten note signed "EBW" and dated August 27, 1967, giving the background on the Sterling Finny advertisements and how they were created to promote The New Yorker. According to White, this book was produced in-house by The New Yorker advertising department to be sent to advertisers and agents--which may explain its somewhat weak binding. White's name never appeared in the ads, like many of his contributions to The New Yorker for "Talk of the Town" pieces. There is no record of the number of copies produced, it is assumed that it was a very small print run. White has also penciled in John Hanrahan's name under the Prologue and Epilogue titles indicating his authorship of those pieces. A rare and unique first book, inscribed by the author to himself, by a giant in the field of American letters. From the Estate of Joel (1930-1997) & Allene White. Unpag. 8vo. Minimal wear to boards, bumping to corners and tiny losses; green cloth spine with light fraying at head and foot. Light green title label pasted to front board. Text block has separated from front board, rear board starting to separate. Clean and crisp within. Issue without dust jacket.
