Original quarter morocco and paper over boards, raised bands, spine in six panels, title in gilt to second panel t.e.g. Slightly rubbed to extremities, corners rubbed, spine very slightly dulled. Untrimmed fore-edges with occasional hint of foxing, very occasionally to text, but generally quite bright and clean. They rank very high in the range of Gill's work" (Franklin, The Private Presses, 2nd ed, page 142). Cave and Manson also note that the edition of two hundred and twenty five copies "sold out very quickly, and purchasers' pleasure was increased by seeing the book rapidly appreciate in value" (Cave and Manson, History of the Golden Cockerel Press, page 52), and the Chanticleer notes, "A satisfying book. Owing to the small number of copies printed this volume is rare and always quoted at a good premium". Cave and Manson 50; Chanticleer 50. First Thus. Quarter Morocco and Boards. Very Good. Illus. by Gill, Eric. Folio. Limited Edition.

The World Crisis, 1916-1918, Volumes I & II, immaculate jacketed first editions in the very rare publisher's slipcase

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1927 - We are pleased to offer Churchill collectors a rarity - a beautifully-preserved, jacketed U.S. first edition set of the 1916-1918 volumes of Churchill's The World Crisis in the rare original publisher's slipcase. The World Crisis is Winston Churchill's epic history of the First World War, in which he played such a critical, controversial, and varied role. Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the Front. First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915, after the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli, Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. He spent political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his six volume masterwork far exceeds this purpose. The U.S. is the true first edition, as U.S. Volume I publication preceded the British. Both the U.S. and British editions were originally published as six individual volumes between 1923 and 1931. Today, jacketed first editions are quite scarce - jacketed U.S. editions even more so. Scarcer still is the original U.S. publisher's slipcase for the 1916-1918 first editions; Charles Scribner's Sons originally issued the two 1916-1918 volumes as a boxed set in a cardboard slipcase. The few slipcases we have seen previously bear three pasted labels. A large, 8.25 x 5.75 inch label printed dark red on ivory on the right side of the slipcase bears an extensive blurb about Churchill and the work. A smaller label on the upper spine of the slipcase, likewise printed dark red on ivory, measures 4 x 3.25 inches and bears the title, author, and publisher. A bright orange promotional label on the lower portion of the slipcase spine measuring 3.75 x 3 inches bears black ink print advertising Churchill's preceding World Crisis volumes. This is the only slipcase we have ever seen without the third, orange advertisement label, likely indicating earlier precedence. These original jacketed and slipcased sets are quite rare and this is a beautiful example. The jackets are near fine plus - lovely and unclipped with just trivial edgewear (primarily incident to slipping in and out of the case). We note mild and uniform toning to the spines and some transfer browning to the two dust jacket faces that face the inner slipcase walls. We have now fitted the dust jackets with removable, archival quality clear covers to guard against any further wear. The volumes are superlative, truly fine. Both volumes are clearly unread with crisp, immaculate contents and no previous ownership marks. The fragile slipcase is entirely complete and shows only slight wear and soiling, mostly confined to the corners and the upper edge at the opening. The top left seam appears to have once been reinforced with some tape, leaving a thin strip of residue, but is nonetheless intact, having been carefully repaired with archival glue. Offered together with a partly-printed Document, completed in manuscript, 1 page, 4.5" x 3", Louisville, Kentucky, April 7, 1927, being an arrest card for Fred Burke (1893-1940), listing his name, basic characteristics and physical measurements, and crime committed, as well as a 4.5" x 2.75" sepia photograph, being a original mug shot showing two images of Burke, one facing forward, the other in profile. Both the arrest card and photograph have been mounted to a larger sheet bearing newspaper accounts of Burke's 1931 arrest and imprisonment for the murder of Officer Skelley. Burke's criminal career began at age 17 when he fled Michigan to avoid prosecution in a land-fraud scheme. Born Thomas A. Camp, he changed his name to Fred Burke when he moved to St. Louis where he joined Egan's Rats, the city's most notorious gang. Interrupted by a stint as a tank sergeant in Europe during the First World War, Burke soon became a prolific and successful bank-robber. When the authorities began arresting members of Egan's Rats in he mid-1920s, Burke moved to Detroit where he associated himself with the Purple Gang and in 1927 was implicated in the Milaflores Massacre. Soon afterward, Burke fell out with the Purple Gang and relocated to Chicago where he fell in with Al Capone and became Scarface's "problem solvers." In 1929, he would preform his greatest service to the Chicago mafia kingpin by executing the assassination of five members and two associates of Capone's arch-rival Bugs Moran. Burke's undoing came later the same year when he shot Michigan Police officer Charles Skelley after a routine traffic stop. Burke "laid low" in Missouri for some time, even marrying a local woman in Sullivan County. Burke was finally caught when an amateur detective recognized him from an issue of True Detective magazine and tipped off authorities. Despite the warning on the wanted poster that "Burke is a dangerous man and every precaution should be used in causing his arrest," Officers captured Burke without a single shot fired. Burke was sentenced to life in a Michigan prison and died of a massive heart attack in 1940. The arrest card, issued upon Burke's arrest in Louisville, Kentucky for the robbery of a Louisville bank and the shooting of one of the bank's employee's Fred Klingman, includes notes on his measurements and general characteristics. In certain instances, the original inked notations were corrected in pencil: his weight of 200 lbs. was changed to 210; originally described as of "Fair" complexion, it was changed to "Ruddy"; and his hair changed from "Med[ium] Chest[nut]" to "Black". The robbery in question took place on April 3, 1925. Bond was set at $10,000. Only the week before, he had been arrested in Detroit for the infamous Milaflores Massacre, but was released soon after.
