[COVER DESIGN BY GAMREKELI] Qurdi [i.e. Thief. Poems]

Tiflis: Trud, 1927. 14, [2] pp. 17х13 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. Author's signature on the first page. Near fine. First edition. One of 1000 copies. Rare. Cover design by Irakli Gamrekeli (1894-1943), Georgian Soviet set designer and one of the founders of Georgian avant-garde stage design influenced by Stenberg brothers and Kirill Zdanevich. From 1922 to 1943 Gamrekeli worked with the Rustaveli Theatre, where he designed 50 productions, including William Shakespeare's Hamlet (1925), Friedrich Schiller's The Robbers (1933) and Shakespeare's Othello (1937). In his early works abstract geometrical constructions prevailed, later he turned to architectural forms. He illustrated a few books in the same style he designed set decorations. This cover is regarded as an exemplary Georgian avant-garde design. Signed in Georgian by the author Karlo Kaladze (1904-1988), Georgian Soviet poet, one of the first Georgian proletarian poets. WorldCat locates only one copy (Yale University Library).

Trud, Kharkiv 1927 - 93, [2] pp. 17x12,5 cm. In original publisher's wrappers. Lower part of the spine chipped, some stains on the front cover, Soviet bookshops' stamps on the back cover, tiny owner's label with number on the inner part of the front cover. Otherwise a near fine clean copy.1 of 3000 copies. First Russian edition. Originally articles'Bibliothekarische Reiseeindrücke aus Amerika'by H. Escherwere published in 1920-1923 (Zurich). Russian publisher made quite a few shortenings because original works were printed in magazines as impressions and memories - such format didn't meet the requirements. In editor's opinion it didn't affect the essence of the subject. The goal for this edition was set to introduce Russian reader to all innovations in modern American librarianship which within known limits can be brought to Soviet practice. This edition contents articles onLibrarianship, Special libraries,How American public libraries reach out to readers, Library and School, The State and Providing Country with books et al.         [ON AMERICAN LIBRARIES] Sovremennye biblioteki v Amerike. Ocherki i statyi / Per. s nem. pod red. i v obrabotke B.O. Borovicha [i.e. Modern Libraries in America. Essays and Articles / Translation from German made and edited by B.O. Borovich]

Kharkiv: Trud, 1927. 93, [2] pp. 17x12,5 cm. In original publisher's wrappers. Lower part of the spine chipped, some stains on the front cover, Soviet bookshops' stamps on the back cover, tiny owner's label with number on the inner part of the front cover. Otherwise a near fine clean copy. 1 of 3000 copies.  First Russian edition. Originally articles 'Bibliothekarische Reiseeindrücke aus Amerika' by H. Escher were published in 1920-1923 (Zurich). This edition contents articles on Librarianship, Special libraries, How American public libraries reach out to readers, Library and School, The State and Providing Country with books et al.  WorldCat locates two copies (Japan and Germany).

        POMES PENYEACH

Paris: Shakespeare and Company, 1927. 16mo. Printed pale green boards. Errata slip. Boards a bit sunned and foxed, light rubbing (but no cracking) to extremities, otherwise a very good copy. First edition, trade issue. There were also thirteen copies on handmade paper. The still common suggestion that the printer, Herbert Clarke, was, in fact, Harry Crosby operating under a pseudonym, is demonstrably false. Clarke established himself as a Paris based printer of English language texts while Crosby was still in knickers. SLOCUM & CAHOON A24.

Kew Gardens. Decorated by Vanessa Bell.

[London:] The Hogarth Press,, 1927. Crown quarto. Original paper boards, titles to spine in brown, three-colour pictorial design by Vanessa Bell to front board, untrimmed, printed on rectos only. In a contemporary brown paper dust jacket with manuscript title to front panel. Title page printed in brown and decorative floral frames throughout, all after designs by Bell. Head of spine bumped, pale foxing along rear joint, a few very small markings to rear board, free endpapers tanned, very light foxing to title and equivalent offsetting to versos, these flaws minor: a superb copy, exceptionally well-preserved in a contemporary dust jacket possibly supplied at publication. Third edition, out-of-series copy from a limited edition of 500. First published in 1919, Kew Gardens was Woolf's third published book and the first book illustrated by her sister Vanessa; its unexpected success was "the most dramatic factor in the Woolfs' becoming significant commercial publisher" (Woolmer p. xxiii). Sales of the first edition were slow until the appearance of a review in the Times Literary Supplement hailing it as "a work of art ? a thing of original and therefore strange beauty, with its own 'atmosphere,' its own vital force" (idem p. xxiv). This resulted in a flood of orders that the Woolfs could not fulfil on their own, and they contracted the second edition to professional printer Richard Madley. Bell's contribution to the first and second editions was limited to a woodcut frontispiece and finispiece; the third edition was the first to contain her illustrations throughout. Kew Gardens was not simply a vehicle for showcasing Vanessa's artistic talents, however: alongside Virginia's second published work The Mark on the Wall (1917), and An Unwritten Novel (1920), Kew Gardens was one of her early shorter fictions which "were less stories than theoretical expositions of the new form of fiction that she had come upon" (ODNB). And the participation of Vanessa Bell was artistically important to the Hogarth Press but of especial personal importance to Virginia, for whom it became an additional means of "binding herself to her sister" (Willis p. 31). The third edition of Kew Gardens is highly uncommon in this condition.
