[Archive of 1100+ Original Photographs of a WWII Soldier's Life in the Pacific Theater]

[Various], (1927-46). First Edition. Archive of more than 1,100 vernacular photographs from the service of a single soldier before, during, and immediately after World War II. Contained in five albums: (1) Oblong string-tied commercial album measuring approximately 13” x 10.5”. Imitation leather titled “Photographs” with small portrait photo, cut to the shape of a key-hole, fixed to front cover. 163 photographs of various snapshot sizes, corner-mounted to leaves recto and verso, most with holograph captions and several small doodles. Approximately half are colorized. Photographs depict family vacations, bicycle racing, aviation, scouting, and other subjects, dated from 1927 to 1935. Five photographs and a bicycle race program laid-in. Four hand-made title pages dividing album into sections. Album is generally in good condition, with some rubbing and wear and a tear at the front cover to which tape has been applied. “Aviation Section” of nine leaves is lacking most photographs. First painted title page adhered to the cover opposing it. Most photos about fine. (2) Oblong commercial photo album measuring 13.75” x 10.75” approx. Lacquer cover with surfing scene and “Aloha Hawaii” at rear; lacking front cover. 226 B&W photographs, most with captions, corner mounted to 25 leaves recto and verso. Photos primarily military scenes in Hawaii and Panama from 1937-1938 with several family photographs. Album in poor condition: lacking the front cover, rear cover and leaves edge-worn and many photographs loose from their mounts. Still most photographs about fine. (3) Oblong string-tied commercial album titled “Photographs,” 15” x 11.5” approx. Hand-lettered title page “G.I./ Memories/Feb. 6 1942-Nov. 17 1945” (above right) with domestic and Pacific theatre place names listed. 202 photographs, various sizes, most 4” x 2.75” approx. Photos primarily from Hawaii and New Guinea. Laid in at rear is a promotional calendar for 1944, upon which a rendering of a B-2 has been drawn. Album generally good. Front cover detached but present. Covers edge-worn. Leaves suffer some chipping to edges. Some photographs have come loose from their mounts, but most in fine condition. (4) Oblong string-tied album, 13.25” x 10.25” approx. Brown imitation leather with “Photographs” printed at front cover. 252 photographs of various snapshot sizes, a handful larger, mounted recto and verso to 36 leaves plus leaf of photo-strips with a total of 50 images. Most photos with holograph captions from Oahu, New Guinea, and various locations throughout the Philippines. Dated 1945. Album suffers some edge-wear, front joint starting. Several pages disbound. Some photographs dismounted, most generally fine. (5) Oblong string-tied commercial album measuring 13.25” x 10” approx. Imitation leather embossed with a horse bust design and “Photographs” at front cover. Hand-lettered title page “Nanking China/Nov. 9th 1945/ to/ Feb. 12th 1946”. One photo measuring 2.75” x 4” approx. and 290 B&W photographs measuring 2.25” x 1.75” approx. corner-mounted to 14 leaves recto and verso, most with hand-written captions. Photographs depict scenes from an airfield, the city of Nanking (Nanjing,) Shanghai, aboard the transport ship USS General Scott, arrival in Seattle, train journey, domestic family scenes and a welcoming parade in Buffalo, NY. Laid in are four photographs of various sizes from 2.5” x 2.5” approx. to 8” x 10” approx. Album lightly edge-worn. Some pages disbound but present. Generally very good. Peter R. Betz (identified by his name and postwar address in the rear of two of the albums) served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific, and his photographs document that theater and the Philippines Campaign in detail. Nearly every photograph features Betz’s neat, holograph captions, and the albums in general are highly organized, making for an incredibly thorough photographic biography of a soldier. The earliest photographs are dated 1927 and feature images of a Boy Scout troop and camping trip. Two of the albums also contain several images of the Betz’s family, including parents, siblings, and cousins. Many of these family portraits are hand tinted. Betz’s documentation of his Army career begins in 1937 and ‘38, with his service in Hawaii and Panama. The photographs regarding this time are casual and candid: soldiers relaxing in barracks and off-base in Honolulu and Waikiki beach, hiking trips in the mountains of Hawaii, native Hawaiians in traditional dress, a visit from President Roosevelt, as well as (separately) from Gracie Allen and George Burns. And photographs of the Panama Canal lock system in action reveal a keen interest in mechanics and engineering. Wartime photographs are contained primarily in two albums. The first, titled “G.I. Memories, Feb. 6, 1942 - Nov. 17, 1945” (above) features over 200 images. These include stateside images of Camp Croft and Sand Hill, SC. A second deployment to Hawaii also features heavily, including many of the same kinds of images as appeared earlier. The album contains a notable series of 28 photographs taken in New Guinea, identified by Betz as “Native dance...started Friday thru Sunday night.” 47 photos from December 1944 to January 1945 in Leyte, Philippines show US Army barracks and soldiers, native Filipinos (mostly children), countryside, numerous aircraft and ships, and the aftermath of one or more unidentified battles (as left). The second album focuses almost entirely on operations in the Philippines. These include eighteen photographs, with aerial shots, labeled “Air Drop,” eleven photographs “taken from” and of Japanese soldiers, and six showing a Japanese surrender on an unidentified airfield. Most importantly, however, over 60 photos that trace the U.S. effort to retake islands from the Japanese, including the January 29, 1945 beach landing at San Narciso, which marked the beginning of the Battle of Bataan. Also noteworthy: Mariveles and the aftermath of fighting in Zig Zag Pass, preparing for the detonation of Fort Drum in Manila Bay on April 12, 1945, followed by images of a beach landing on and aerial shots of Carabao Island on April 16. Additionally: 100 photos, dated January-October 1946, of Luzon after the liberation of the island. The photographs show soldiers and native Filipinos, including Negrito resistance fighters armed with bow and arrow, as well as villages and buildings, many showing the effects of the war. A final album documents, in over 200 images, Betz’s experience immediately after the end of hostilities, where he served out his enlistment in Nanking and Shanghai, China. Dated Now. 9, 1945 - Feb. 12, 1946, these photographs show various aspects of the city, soldiers, and people, as well as US and Japanese planes, ships, and like. The album concludes with photographs taken from the deck of the USS General Scott during Betz’s return voyage to the United States. Betz was a serious student of photography, and his images demonstrate a keen eye for framing and documentary. As comprehensive an archive of a soldier’s WWII service as we’ve encountered. While vernacular albums from this era do turn up, we aren’t aware of any as large, or as comprehensively-captioned, that focuses on a single person as this one. Indeed, both circumstances of life in the Pacific theater, as well as formal censorship policies and security restrictions made assembling such a large collection extraordinarily difficult. A rare, compelling, and significant collection.

        Boris Godounov

Paris: Editions Piazza, 1927. Illustrated by Boris Zworkine. Translation by A. Baranoff. Copy #104 on Japon containing a suite of plates in black. (Entire edition 955: 35 on Japon with a suite in color and a suite in black; 145 copies with a suite in black as ours; 775 on Vélin). Quarto (7 1/4" x 9 5/8" x 1 5/8') . Original wrappers. Two vols. Volume of text, with album of separate full-page plates in black and white. Text: 139 pages. With 15 color wood-engravings horstexte en colors. Spine of text volume very slightly faded; Plates in original glassine; in folding chemise. With original open board case. The illustrator Boris Zworkine [or Zvorkin or Zworkin] (B. Moscow 1872, D. Paris 1942.) was one of the founders of the Russian style of modern European book illustration. His work has been compared to Ivan Bilibin’s and to Vasily Ivanovich Shukhaev’s (1887-1973), a Russian “neo-Romantic” artist living also living in Paris. The young Zworkine studied at the Moscow School of Painting and Sculpture and later, and supported himself by doing commercial projects and decorative gifts and wall art on Russian themes. He left Russian in 1921, went to Egypt and then to Paris, which was then the center of Russian cultural life in Western Europe. In 1922, he began his association with the publisher Henri Piazza* D.Y. Severyukhin writing in Art_investment.ru chronicles Boris Zworkin’s life in detail then concludes of this edition of Boris Godounov: “the artist demonstrates an impressive possession of ornamental art...the subtle weaving of patterns, mottled clothing, characters, floor carpets....[which are]...organically connected with the three-dimensional and very realistic representation of space and care of detail in the pictures.” Severyukhin calls particular attention to the portrait of Boris Godounov in both the color and black and white versions done in a style of engraved portraits that originated in Moscovy at the time of Ivan the Terrible [16 century]. The format of this edition is th compared to those of Editions de la Pléiade published by Jacques Schffrin (who worked for Piazza before starting his own publishing company in 1922). “All (Zwokine’s) work is based on the strict preservation of the style of a certain period. ..especially of Russia.” (Severyukhin quoting The Studio magazine vol 93, pp. 188-191, 1927 review by M. Blumenfeld of Boris Godounov.) *The publisher Jules Henri Piazza (1861-1929) was one of the pioneers of the limited edition art book in Paris beginning with L'Estampe moderne in 1899. Piazza was founder in 1922, of Le Livre français, “ société d'édition de chefs-d'Å›uvre français du conte et du roman en éditions de luxe accessibles au grand public.” Ref: http://forum.artinvestment.ru/blog.php?b=4872

[INTERNATIONAL PROTEST] IT IS A MATTER OF COMMON KNOWLEDGE THAT THE ULYSSES OF MR JAMES JOYCE IS [first line]

Paris, 1927. Folio broadside (35 x 21.2 cm), printed on recto only. Old horizontal fold, trace of dust darkening along a portion of the extreme right margin, lower right corner creased; otherwise, a very good to near fine copy of this fragile item. The separate broadside printing of the English text of the protest by over 160 writers and other dignitaries mounted against Samuel Roth and his unauthorized piracy of segments of ULYSSES for publication in TWO WORLDS MONTHLY. Joyce had engaged Benjamin Connor, through the firm of Chadbourne, Stanchfield and Levy, to pursue legal action against Roth, but in the face of the inevitable slow forward movement of such action, he asked Archibald MacLeish and Ludwig Lewisohn to draft the text of this protest. The text was circulated and the signers, including Einstein, Eliot, Hemingway, Mann, Loy, Yeats, Woolf, Lawrence, Lewis, Stephens, Wells, Wilder and many others, got on board. The protest was dated and issued to the press coincident with Joyce's birthday, in both English and French printings, and the whole was reprinted in the April 1927 issue of TRANSITION. Of course, the protest had no effect on Roth's continued publication of bowdlerized excerpts from ULYSSES - in September of 1926 he had run out of available text from WIP to print - and ULYSSES continued to be excerpted through the issues of September and October of 1927 (the latter issued only as part of the publisher's bound 3 volume format). ELLMANN (1965 printing), pp.598-9. SLOCUM & CAHOON C68 (note).

Antheil and the Treatise of Harmony with Supplementary Notes.

First US edition, first printing. Presentation copy to George Antheil, the subject of the book, inscribed by the author, "Mr Atheling to Mr Antheil, Oct. 1927, duly certified by E.P. The phrase "annihilating lucidity"was used in Covici's press release for the book. Although George Antheil styled himself the bad boy of American music and played avant-garde concerts with a revolver laid on the piano, he grew alarmed by Pound's enthusiasm and later distanced himself from this book. The two other Belling offprints are: Single and Double Rings at the Reduction Division in Uvularia (1926); The Attachments of Chromosomes at the Reduction Division in Flowering Plants (1927). I have met with at least 3 cases of linkage in my own work. I sent a short paper to Punnet, of Cambridge, England, some months ago, pointing out how the results of my work and that of others was dead against the Cambridge hypothesis of somatic segregation, but he did not care to publish it. It seems to me strange that a critical biologist like Bateson should have led his followers in the assumption of such an unsupported and barren hypothesis. Columbia University is leading the world in this line of work. Yours truly, John Belling Botanist??Bridges was an American scientist, known for his contributions to the field of genetics. Along with Alfred Sturtevant and H.J. Muller, Bridges was part of the famous fly room of Thomas Hunt Morgan at Columbia University.?         Antheil and the Treatise of Harmony with Supplementary Notes.

Chicago: Pascal Covici, Publisher, Inc., 1927 - Octavo. Original reddish-brown cloth, spine and front cover with lettering reversed out of black panels. Excellent condition. First US edition, first printing. Presentation copy to George Antheil, the subject of the book, inscribed by the author, "Mr Atheling to Mr Antheil, Oct. 1927, duly certified by E.P. 'for annihilating lucidity'." William Atheling was the pen name Pound had used from 1917 when writing music reviews for The New Age. The phrase "annihilating lucidity"was used in Covici's press release for the book. Although George Antheil styled himself the bad boy of American music and played avant-garde concerts with a revolver laid on the piano, he grew alarmed by Pound's enthusiasm and later distanced himself from this book. This edition is an expanded version of the limited edition of 40 copies only published at the Three Mountains Press in Paris in 1924.

Original painting in gouache and wash with gold highlights on heavy art paper depicting parts of the interior of "The Old Met" in New York at 1411 Broadway between 39th and 40th Streets during a performance, the audience on numerous tiers. Signed "Gropper" at bottom right. Undated, but ca. 1965-66, very close to the date of demolition of "The Old Met" in 1967

Gropper, a social realist, was a pupil of George Bellows and Robert Henri. He was active in New York as a painter, lithographer, cartoonist, and illustrator. His work is held in New York by both the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Deeply involved in the radical politics of the 1920s and 30s, Gropper contributed to such left wing publications as The Revolutionary Age, The Liberator, The New Masses, The Worker, and The Morning Freiheit. He went on a tour of Soviet Russia with the novelists Sinclair Lewis and Theodore Dreiser in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Russia Revolution in 1927. During the second half of the 1930s, he dedicated his art to efforts to raise opposition to fascism in Europe. After visiting Eastern Europe in 1948, he decided to make one painting a year as a memorial to the victims of the Warsaw Ghetto. Gropper was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1953. "The Metropolitan Opera said goodbye to its old house on April 16, 1966, with a sentimental gala farewell performance featuring nearly all of the company's current leading artists. The long time Met star soprano Zinka Milanov made her last Met appearance that night and among the many invited guests was soprano Anna Case who had made her debut at the house in 1909. The final performance at the opera house was given not by the Met but the Bolshoi Ballet, which concluded a short run of appearances on May 8, 1966... Despite a campaign to preserve the theater, it failed to obtain landmark status and the old Met was razed in 1967. " Wikipedia The present painting was executed very close to the date of the farewell performance referred to above.. 508 x 380 mm. (20" x 15"). Unframed. Remnants of paper tape to upper margin of verso.

Minutes of a coalition of private, state and federal entities into the feasibility of growing tobacco in Australia.

Melbourne:. 1927 - 1930.. Hardcover. Very good condition. The only known copy of the privately compiled Executive Committee Meeting Minutes of this Australian government investigation into growing high quality light tobacco in Australia. This is likely the copy of the American Director of Investigations, C. M. Slagg. The scheme was financed by the Commonwealth, the States, and the British Australasian Tobacco Company and conducted growing experiments throughout Australia in an effort to duplicate the quality of American tobacco. Charles Mervyn Slagg, the Director, was an American recruited for his broad experience in growing tobacco. He undertook growing projects throughout Australia, experimenting with different soil conditions, seed, fertilizers, irrigation and curing & processing methods in order to duplicate the elusive aroma and texture that the smoking public and the British Australasian Tobacco Company demanded (p71). Slagg, in a separately published report to the Executive Committee, wrote of the many obstacles encountered, "The Australian Tobacco Investigation is experimenting mainly in the production of the bright flue-cured type of tobacco, since this type at present forms the bulk of our leaf imports. It has been found that we have not one aroma to deal with, but many aromas, at least as many as there are States in the Commonwealth". (The Smoking Qualities of Australian Tobacco, A Preliminary Report Presented to the Executive Committee'; pp 28-29). The Investigation lasted 3 years after which Slagg returned to the US. The meetings were held in the Offices of the Development and Migration Commission. As the first meeting was attended by only two men-the Chairman of the DMC and the CEO of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research- and the gatherings seldom exceeded seven attendees (including a Recording Secretary), it is likely that few copies of these Minutes were produced, let alone survive. "The scheme was financed cooperatively by the tobacco company, the Commonwealth and the states, an arrangement that was the basic cause of failure. Understandably, Slagg responded to the pressures of Australian federalism by initiating small projects in each of the mainland states. The results of cultivation and curing tests were highly variable because of geographical dispersal and inadequate control; their scientific value was negligible. In 1930 Slagg resigned under the weight of criticism, and in the next few years the work was pushed from pillar to post." (Schedvin, C.B. Shaping Science and Industry: A History of Australia's Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, 1926-49. 1987, p.162). The Minutes start with the first meeting of May 39, 1927 and run through to November 7, 1930. The topics cover a broad range of subjects from projected field work to communications and expenditures. The index, which is an original typescript running 31 pages, includes such meeting topics as: Aroma experiments; Agreement with BAT Co; Air cured Tobacco; Blue Mould; Bathurst Experiments; Climatological Data; Chemical Experiments; Co- ordination and co-operation with state departments; Darnell-Smith, Dr., Visit to America; Economic Survey of Tobacco Growing Industry; Experimental Farm; Finance; Fertilizer Experiments; Growers; Heating & refrigerating plant; Imperial Economic Committee; Importation; Irrigation; New South Wales, progress reports; Victoria, South Australia and Queensland progress reports; Processing and Handling methods; Publications; New companies formed to manufacture in Australia; Queensland, Progress reports; Research, blue mould; Smoking Qualities of Tobacco; South Australia, progress reports; Tasmania progress reports; and Western Australia, progress reports. The work of this Investigation should not be confused with the Australian Parliament's Select Committee on the Tobacco-Growing Industry in Australia, that was convened in 1929, with its Report published in July 1930. The House Committee had a much narrower inquiry, within a short period of time. However, there was some involvement with this Investigative body. As the House Report noted, "Mr. C.M. Slagg, M.Sc, Director of the Australian Tobacco Investigation, was also invited by the Committee to be present... (he) was present at nearly all sittings throughout the inquiry, and asked questions of witnesses" [p. xviii]. Folio, 13 3/4", Index [31], 190pp, [1]. Pages 1-68 numbered with blue china marker by hand, the last 22pp unpaginated. Typed or mimeographed carbons, pages 1 to 168 numbered in blue pencil. Housed in a black cloth binder, "Brampton's Patent Instantaneous Binder" with typed label laid down at front board, no title at spine. The Australian Tobacco Investigation did publish an annual Bulletin; but we can find no holdings for these original Minutes, including OCLC and Trove.

The Quantum Theory of Emission and Absorption of Radiation. SS. 243-265. In: Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series A, Vol. 114.

(London Harrison ) 1927 - (24,5 x 16,5 cm). SS. 137-366. Mit zahlreichen Abbildungen und Tafeln. Moderne Broschur. Erste Ausgabe dieser bedeutenden Arbeit zur Entwicklung der Quantentheorie. - "A New Radiation Theory. The first results of this strategy were almost miraculous. First came his new radiation theory, in February 1927, which quantized for the first time James Clerk Maxwell's radiation in interaction with atoms. Previous quantum-mechanical studies of radiation problems, except for Jordan's unpopular attempt, retained purely classical fields. In late 1925 Jordan had applied Heisenberg's rules of quantization to continuous free fields and obtained a light-quantum structure with the expected statistics (Bose Einstein) and dual fluctuation properties. Dirac further demonstrated that spontaneous emission and its characteristics - previously taken into account only by special postulates - followed from the interaction between atoms and the quantum field. Essential to this success was the fact that Dirac's transformation theory eliminated from the interpretation of the quantum formalism every reference to classical emitted radiation, contrary to Heisenberg's original point of view and also to Schrödinger's concept of Psi as a classical source of field. This work was done during Dirac's visit to Copenhagen in the winter of 1927. Presumably to please Bohr, who insisted on wave-particle duality and equality, Dirac opposed the 'corpuscular point of view' to the quantized electromagnetic 'wave point of view.' He started with a set of massless Bose particles described by symmetric Psi waves in configuration space. As he discovered by 'playing with the equations,' this description was equivalent to a quantized Schrödinger equation in the space of one particle; this 'second quantization' was already known to Jordan, who during 1927 extended it into the basic modern quantum field representation of matter. Dirac limited his use of second quantization electromagnetic to radiation: to establish that the corpuscular point of view, once brought into this form, was equivalent to the wave point of view" (DSB). - Erstes Blatt gestempelt, sonst sauber und gut erhalten. - DSB 17, 224 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
