        Der Steppenwolf

Berlin: S. Fischer, 1927. First Edition. Hard Cover with Dust Jacket. Fine/About Fine. Original pale blue cloth, decorated in gilt and black, original beige dust jacket, printed in black. The Tractat is bound in, with yellow printed wrappers, and separately paginated. 12mo, [9]10-64[33 pages, the Tractat]65-289[1]. Minor expert restoration to jacket. Four copies show in the auction record, only 2 of those with dust jackets; the present copy is the finest copy we have seen. Mostly autobiographical, Der Steppenwolf is Mr. Hesse's best-known work. A blend of Eastern mysticism and Western culture, it is one of modern literature's most prosaic evocations of the soul's journey to liberation, through epiphany. Mr. Hesse was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1946.

Autograph Quotation signed ("M.A. Foroughi"). In French. [Paris]., September 1927.

1927. Folio. 1 page. On uncut wove paper, bearing the Schoellers-Parole blind embossed seal, margins uncut. The original autograph contribution of Mohammed-Ali Foroughi to the Committee of the World League for Peace (Ligue Mondiale pour la Paix), a remarkable organization formed in 1925 with close ties to the League of Nations. The Committee itself was composed of such notaries as Queen Elizabeth of Belgium, King Carol II of Romania, John D Rockefeller, Marie Curie, and Albert Einstein, who personally gathered the present manuscripts over the course of seven years (1925-32). Among the public figures who contributed to the project were dignitaries from the newly-created League of Nations' member states. "Peace will reign over the world and a true League of Nations will exist on the day when we will have truly understood that men, in order to be true men, must, contrary to the beast, band together instead of tearing each other apart, and that in the struggle for life they must fight, not the one against the other, but all against nature, or rather against our ignorance of the physical and moral laws of nature. This thought has been admirably expressed by one of our most illustrious philosophical poets, Djelaladdine, nearly 700 years ago in a couplet which I should like to quote verbatim: 'The wolves and the dogs are disunited, / The true men are always in perfect accord'. [Signed] M. A. Foroughi, Premier Delegate of Persia to the League of Nations". Foroughi became Director of the Tehran School of Political Science in 1907. He was instrumental in the bringing to power of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi after Reza Shah was forced to abdicate in 1941 and subsequently became Ambassador of Iran to the United States. Pax Mundi. Livre d'or de la paix. Enquete universelle de la Ligue mondiale pour la paix sous le haut patronage de son comite d'honneur avec l'approbation de la Societe des nations, du Bureau international du travail et de la Cour permanente de justice internationale.         Typed Letter Signed

London: September 20, 1927 - Single pale blue sheet, printed in blue. Signed by Woolf in her signature purple ink on the verso. Near fine, with some light creasing at the folds, pencil notations, a hint of toning to the verso. Overall, a bright and attractive piece of correspondence, signed by Woolf. In this letter, Virginia Woolf responds to Ellery Sedgwick, Esq. of The Atlantic Monthly in regards to the publication of her article "The Novels of E. M. Forster." Woolf acknowledges that The Atlantic will publish it in their English edition, and politely debates as to who retains the American and English rights to the article. She maintains her opinion in her conclusion: "But, if I may say so, I think the understanding was that the English rights should rest with me." [Attributes: Signed Copy]

La Guirlande des dunes. Illustrations de Henri CASSIERS.

Paris, Piazza, 1927.

1927. Folio. 1 page. On uncut wove paper, bearing the Schoellers-Parole blind embossed seal, margins uncut. "The League of Nations acts for peace and security for the whole world". With French inscription in his hand "Premier Deleguè de l'Empire d'Ethiopie, Bajironde Zallaka". Zallaka was the former Ethiopian Minister of Finance. - The Ethiopian Empire's relationship with the League of Nations is of particular interest during this period. In 1923 Haile Selassie I had secured entry into the League as the only remaining independent African state. In 1936 the Italian delegation withdrew from the League after their brutal invasion of Ethiopia, and Haile Selassie made his famed journey to Geneva to plead his country's case in person. Although the Empire was by now in Italian hands, Selassie's entry to the hall of the League of Nations was sympathetically accompanied by an introduction as "His Imperial Majesty, the Emperor of Ethiopia". His speech on the occasion, given amids the jeers of the Italian journalists present, is sometimes considered among the most stirring of the 20th century. Pax Mundi. Livre d'or de la paix.         The Viking Chorus.

John Hargrave - the Kibbo Kift 1927 - The Viking Chorus. Glee department records. May 24 1932. Seven pages hand written by Hargrave comprising of the chorus for the pantomime of the same name. The Kibbo Kift was an Organisation was founded by the charismatic Englishman John Hargrave (aka 'White Fox'), artist, author and Boy Scout Commissioner for Woodcraft and Camping, who had become disenchanted with the increasingly militaristic tendency in the Scout movement after World War I. Hargrave was promptly expelled from the Scouts by Scout founder Robert Baden-Powell. With a small group of like-minded, dissident, anti-war Scoutmasters and Scoutmistresses under his own direct leadership, he set about building an alternative and very different movement. Baden-Powell expelled Hargrave with extreme reluctance, and only after some wealthy backers had threatened to withdraw funding from the Scouts unless he was expelled. The Kibbo Kift (archaic Kentish dialect for 'proof of great strength'[2]) has been described as 'the only genuine English national movement of modern times' and was certainly very different from Baden-Powell's Boy Scouts. Based on the woodcraft principles of naturalist Ernest Thompson Seton that had been a key part of the early Scout programme, the Kibbo Kift was to be not merely a youth organisation but was to involve all ages and, very daring for the times, it was open to both sexes. The ideas of world peace and the regeneration of urban man through the open-air life replaced the nationalism and militarism Hargrave had detested in the post-World War I Scouts. Kinsmen and women were organised in Clans, Tribes and Lodges. Each individual took a 'woodcraft name', inspired by their ideas of 'Indian-style' names. The correct costume had to be hand-made by each individual or 'rooftree' (family group) and while the everyday 'habit' of Saxon hood, jerkin, shorts and long cloak must have seemed outlandish enough in the English countryside of the early 1920s; for ceremonial occasions, brilliantly coloured surcoats or silk-embroidered robes were worn by the various office-holders such as the Tallykeeper, Campswarden, Ritesmaster and Gleeman. Hargrave himself was 'Head Man' and his leadership was dynamic, inspirational and frankly autocratic. The Mark of the Kindred of the Kibbo Kift is typical of the symbolism that can be seen in many of their designs. Its meaning is: Worship (The K sign) Forever (the Circle of Unity and Eternity) Life (the Flame) through Knowledge (the Tree). Or again, ‘Worship Life Forever with Knowledge’. The Kibbo Kift's central activities of hiking and camping were refined and elevated to the level of a spiritual exercise. The weekend 'Tribal' Camps and the great annual 'Althing' were marked by colourful and impressive ritual, inspired by their ideas of what Native American ceremonies might be like, but couched in language reminiscent of the Norse Sagas and rich in Saxon archaisms. Kinsmen were not only required to make their own lightweight, one-man hiking tents (the first seen in England) but to decorate them with vivid, symbolic designs of their own devising. Influenced by Hargrave's own artistic taste, an ultra-modern 'futurist' style of design became general, and the robes, regalia, tents and other items of decorative art, often of an extremely high standard, represent an extraordinary 'democratisation' of the avant-garde art of the day. The Kibbo Kift were never more than a few hundred strong. Kinsmen and Kinswomen included the Suffragettes Emmeline Pethick Lawrence, Mary Neal and May Billinghurst, the journalist Henry Nevinson, the photographer Angus McBean, and Ruth Clark. The Advisory Committee included Havelock Ellis, Maurice Maeterlinck, the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore, H. G. Wells and Professor Julian Huxley. D. H. Lawrence took an interest in the Kindred and it has been suggested that Mellors in Lady Chatterley's Lover is based on an archetypal Kinsman. The growth of the Kibbo Kift was not without its setbacks. In 1924, the Sou [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Autograph letter signed. Paris, 9. II. 1927.

1927. Large 4to. 1 p. Letterhead "2, Square Robiac / 182, rue de Grenelle". With autogr. envelope. To the young American musician Arthur Laubenstein in Nice, who had been the teacher of his son Giorgio at the Schola Cantorum in Paris, thanking for congratulations on the occasion of his 45th birthday: "Many thanks for your kind telegram on my birthday. It was very good of you to remember me [...] Have you settled down altogether in Nice or is there any likelihood of your passing through Paris at any time: We might go south but my wife does not like Nice though I found it quite pleasant. We spent the summer at Ostende. Giorgio has taken up singing again. It is now fixed that he certainly has not a bass but a baritone or robust tenor. Lucia [his daughter] has danced in public here and in Brussels and is starting to teach. Tuohy was here for about two months (it seemed two years) to finish my face which will adorn the May salon. Thank goodness he left today. We still go to the Trianon where the female dog Cascade continues to proliferate. My eyesight seems to be getting better lentissimamente. Did you set any of those verses? I enclose copy of a protest issued on my birthday to the French, English and American press [...]". - The "protest" against the American publisher Samuel Roth (not included) was supported by 160 signatories who condemned Roth's unauthorised and castrated version of the "Ulysses" as a serial novel in his magazine "Two Worlds". Later that same year, Joyce's collection of poems "Pomes Penyeach" appeared (with Shakespeare and Co.), as did the first German translation of "Ulysses". Apparently unpublished.

Autograph letter signed. Moscow, 23. II. 1927.

1927. Large 8vo. 1½ pp. Written in red ink. A long letter to his third wife, Natalja mentioning the making of a suprematistic movie, organising a shipment of his paintings and his trip to Poland: "[...] I'm totally upset now, more nervous than ever before, you realize that in everything I do. I have ordered a box, for example, to put some paintings in, and thoroughly took the wrong measures; afterwards I've ordered a second one, and was also completely mistaken. Finally, I managed it with pain and misery, wrapped in the paintings and will ship it to the censorship office for Friday, and if I manage to do so I will buy a ticket, which costs 35 rubels to the border and another 35 rubels from there to Warsaw [...] My golden one, my beloved one, you're sleeping and can't hear the tender words I'm whispering to you, but I repeat them every single night when I go to bed [...] I have to hurry to the film studios. We are about to produce a suprematist movie. We have to work under pressure, as we will be joined by various film animators [...]" (transl. from Russian). Malewitsch über sich.
