Deutsche Theater-Ausstellung Magdeburg 1927. Komplette Folge der offiziellen Katalog-, Buch- und Zeitschriftenveröffentlichungen. 6 Bände

Die Deutsche Theater-Ausstellung Magdeburg 1927 öffnete ihre Pforten am 14. Mai 1927 und schloß sie am 25. Oktober 1927. Notes on the Thoroughbred from Kentucky Newspapers

1927 - (THOROUGHBRED RACING) O'CONNOR, John L. Notes on the Thoroughbred from Kentucky Newspapers. (Lexington, Kentucky): Privately printed by Louis Lee Haggin, [1927]. Octavo, original green morocco. Housed in a custom cloth slipcase. $8500.Rare first edition, presentation copy, of this important history of Kentucky race horses and the Kentucky horse-racing industry, one of only 10 copies printed, warmly inscribed by the publisher who oversaw the destruction of the original type to prevent more copies from being printed: "With all my love Beloved. Without you the small part I have done in this book would never have been made. Louis," handsomely bound in deluxe publisher's morocco."O'Connor was the first person to systematically research the foundations of Thoroughbreds in America. His work became the basis for the writings of Fairfax Harrison, who produced seven volumes [on the subject]. O'Connor, a Thoroughbred enthusiast from an early age, combed early Kentucky newspapers (1788-1833) for notes on racing and stallion advertisements for Thoroughbreds, as well as Quarterhorses and Saddlebreds. The resulting Notes on the Thoroughbred was privately printed by Louis Lee Haggin. [The book] does not have a publication date, nor are the pages numbered. The story goes that the printer missed his completion deadline one too many times. An incensed Haggin picked up the pages while still in galley proof form and had them bound elsewhere" (National Sporting Library Newsletter). According to one bibliographer, "not more than six copies of this work were printed and most were bound in green cloth [this copy is in green morocco]. All other known copies of this work are held in institutions or libraries" (Coleman 2290). In fact, in a 1928 letter, the publisher, Louis Lee Haggin, personally stated that 10 copies of the work were printed, but that "five of [them] I sent to [the compiler] John O'Connor and as I understood they were not to be given away." Most copies exist in cloth. Presumably, this copy was specially bound for Haggin. Accordingly, this inscribed, morocco-bound copy is of exceptional rarity. Mackay-Smith, National Sporting Library Newsletter, March 1993. Light rubbing and tiny puncture to binding and a bit of toning to spine. A near-fine copy, inscribed by the publisher and exceptionally rare. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        Salomão e as mulheres.

Rio de Janeiro, Empreza Graphica Editora?Paulo, Pongetti & Cia., 1927. - 8°, early half beige buckram (some rubbing and soiling), original printed wrappers bound in. Some browning and foxing; not a good quality paper to begin with, as is bluntly stated in a printed note on the third leaf at the end: "Toda a edição foi tirada neste papel ruim." Overall good. Inscribed by the author on the half-title, dated 1927, "Ao Auryno Maciel-meu irmão pequeno," signed "JL". 248 pp., (3, 1 blank ll.). *** FIRST EDITION of Jorge de Lima's first novel, published while he was still a government employee in Alagoas. This copy is inscribed to his good friend Auryno Maciel, who is also one of the dedicatees and is mentioned twice in the lengthy Latin note on the first unnumbered leaf following the text.Jorge Mateus de Lima (1895-1953), a native of União dos Palmares (Alagoas), was a prominent Modernist poet and co-founder of the Northeastern school. He is "acclaimed as one of the most spontaneous natural poetic geniuses of Brazilian literature, [but] he is considered by some to be a perpetually dissatisfied poet in search of new worlds to conquer and never content with his own brilliant performance" (Stern pp. 176-77). In 1931 Lima moved to Rio de Janeiro and began teaching Brazilian literature. His earlier works included, in verse, the precocious @XIV Alexandrinos, 1914; @O mundo do menino imposível, 1925; @Poemas, 1927; and @A comédia dos erros, 1923. Although known primarily as a poet, he also wrote novels, children's literature and art criticism. The influences on his work range from Parnassianism to Symbolism, Modernism and Surrealism. As a young man Lima was torn between becoming a physician or a priest, and although he studied to be the former, many of his writings reflect a religious temperament that seems to have become stronger toward the end of his life, for example, in @Tempo e eternidade, 1935, and @A túnica inconsutil, 1938. Lima is closely linked with José Lins do Rego in the founding of the Northeastern school.*** Menezes, @Dicionário literário brasileiro (1976) p. 367. On the author, see Carpeaux, @Pequena bibliografia crítica da literatura brasileira pp. 276-8; Werneck Sodré, @História da literatura brasileira pp. 529, 537, 551, 575; Bandeira, @Brief History of Brazilian Literature pp. 147, 148, 149-50, 153; Wilson Martins, @História da inteligência brasileira VII, 1, 28, and elsewhere (34 references).         [CLASSIC BIBLIOGRAPHY] Ishchem kupit'. Our desiderata [i.e. In Search to Buy. Our Desiderata]

Mezhdunarodnaya kniga: Moscow, 1927. 16 pp. 21x13,6 cm. Original wrappers. Very good condition. The brochure was compiled by Petr Shibanov (1864-1935), the most well-known antiquarian bookseller of the time containing the short list of rarest Russian books. There are only 378 books in the list with prices that Mezhdunarodnaya Kniga (i.e. The International bookshop) is ready to pay for them. This brochure became a talking point for a long while because of the book selection and the prices - some younger booksellers didn't like criteria of the selection. Mezhdunarodnaya Kniga along with Torgsin was responsible for selling several important Russian manuscripts from museums to the West in 1930s. This catalogue now regards as a classic bibliography for any collector of Russian books. Now to have even 1 book from the list in a collection should be considered as a remarkable achievement.

24 [Vierundzwanzig] Stunden aus dem Leben [Twenty-four hours in the life of a woman] (Typescript of novel, with corrections by Lil Dagover)

N.p.: N.p.. Bound carbon typescript of Stefan Zweig's 1927 novella, made for the purpose of use by German actress Lil Dagover for her reading of same for the 1963 German LP, "Lil Dagover spricht Stefan Zweig." Dagover's name is in blue holograph ink on the front board, then again with her German address on the front endpaper, then only her name once again on the title page. With Dagover's holograph corrections to the text on virtually every recto, and, when a rewrite of a passage was required, on the verso to the of a given typescript passage on the recto. Typescript is accompanied by the resulting recording by Dagover, the original German issue by Deustsche Grammophon, released in 1963. One of the most famous works by Zweig, an Austrian Jew who was a passionate collector of autograph manuscripts, maintained close friendships with the likes of Sigmund Freud and Richard Strauss, and whose prose took on the dual concerns of daily life and the impact of politics on everyday people. This novella is an outwardly simple drama of a single day in a woman's life, an English widow who becomes uncontrollably attracted to a gambling diplomat during an evening in Monte Carlo. She is quickly reeled into his very troubled life, and realizes her error too late. The novella was adapted to film in 1931, 1944, 1952, and 1968, and most recently in 2002, with the most notable among these adaptations is Max Ophuls' first American film, "Letter from an Unknown Woman" (1948), starring Joan Fontaine and Louis Jourdan. Pages Near Fine, binding three quarter leather and decorated paper covered boards, with no titling, Very Good plus.

The Nan Britton Papers: An Archive of Letters, Typescripts, and Documents (including personal copies of The President's Daughter)

(California). 1927-1982. An important archive of papers belonging to Nan Britton, author of the sensational tell-all bestseller of 1927: The President's Daughter (in which she named Warren Harding the father of her illegitimate daughter and described their nearly seven years long affair in great detail), and an early champion for the cause of securing legal rights for unwed mothers and their illegitimate children. The archive contains personal and professional correspondence, several unpublished and annotated working typescripts, and Britton's personal copies of The President's Daughter (including a first edition copy with a pagination error and missing pages, likely resulting from when the Society for the Suppression of Vice seized the printer's plates and printed sheets), and of her second book Honesty or Politics. The collection consists of about one linear foot of material housed by Britton into file folders and stationery boxes with her explanatory manuscript and typed notes. The collection documents Britton's life-long crusade for justice on behalf of children born out of wedlock, and to support her claim (only now confirmed by DNA testing in 2015), that Harding had fathered her daughter Elizabeth Ann shortly before his election as President in 1920. Included are special selected letters from Eleanor Roosevelt, Alfred Kinsey, Bertha Van Hoosen, Clarence Darrow, and several leading figures in child welfare legislation, along with 100 letters, mostly from women, who were inspired by The President's Daughter to tell of their own personal experience of having an illegitimate child and the ensuing social stigma they had to contend with. Also included is a separate folder of letters and ephemera from the radio celebrities The McDowell Sisters (known as "Sweethearts of the Air"), who befriended Britton and Elizabeth Ann after they read the book.Included among the unpublished typescripts are two complete variant versions of Her Father's Daughter: The Life Story of Maria Malibran (each totaling nearly 600 pages), Britton's biography of the celebrated opera singer Malibran, perhaps the most famous woman of the 19th century to have an illegitimate child. Also among the typescripts is the only known copy of Stories by Britton's daughter Elizabeth Ann (consisting of about 40 stories from 1928), several chapters from Britton's unpublished autobiography: Stony Limits, and two of Britton's unfinished historical surveys of bastardy: A Thousand Years of Trial and Error: the politics that have perpetuated illegitimacy and The Prehistoric Mother: and the emergence of the "illegitimate" child. Other shorter transcripts include: The Illegitimate Child, and An Open Letter to Mr. Ashley Montagu in which Britton disputes Montagu's radical theory (made in his 1969 book: Sex, Man & Society) that the birth control pill will provide the basis for the humanization of the male.A historically important and compelling archive of papers belonging to Nan Britton, who scandalized the country with her account of carnal adventures in the White House, and which TIME critic Robert Plunket has recently declared to be "a true American classic, the first modern political tell-all and a book of inestimable importance when it comes to our country's gender wars." A detailed list of the archive is available upon request. .

        Revolt in the Desert.

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1927. Quarto. Original quarter brown pigskin on sand buckram, title gilt to spine, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Coloured portrait frontispiece, 10 coloured plates, 8 black and white plates, folding map at rear. A little rubbing to spine ends; an excellent, bright copy. Large paper issue of the first edition, limited to 315 numbered copies, of which 300 were for sale; this copy is number 140. The costs for production of the 1926 Seven Pillars of Wisdom had ballooned to such an extent that Lawrence was contemplating selling either his library or some of his property to clear the debt. Eventually he settled on the publication of an abridgement, undertaken in 1926 by Lawrence himself with the help of some of his fellow servicemen, an earlier attempt by Edward Garnett having been set aside. Published in March 1927 in Great Britain and America, in both limited and general issues, three impressions were soon sold out and two more quickly added. The profits from this publication made the fortunes of the Cape publishing house.

The Most Select Excellent and Dauntless Company of Archers

Kibbo Kift, London 1927 - Four page signed by Raymond J Dixon - ornately produced. The organisation was founded by the charismatic Englishman John Hargrave (aka 'White Fox'), artist, author and Boy Scout Commissioner for Woodcraft and Camping, who had become disenchanted with the increasingly militaristic tendency in the Scout movement after World War I. Hargrave was promptly expelled from the Scouts by Scout founder Robert Baden-Powell. With a small group of like-minded, dissident, anti-war Scoutmasters and Scoutmistresses under his own direct leadership, he set about building an alternative and very different movement. Baden-Powell expelled Hargrave with extreme reluctance, and only after some wealthy backers had threatened to withdraw funding from the Scouts unless he was expelled. The Kibbo Kift (archaic Kentish dialect for 'proof of great strength'[2]) has been described as 'the only genuine English national movement of modern times' and was certainly very different from Baden-Powell's Boy Scouts. Based on the woodcraft principles of naturalist Ernest Thompson Seton that had been a key part of the early Scout programme, the Kibbo Kift was to be not merely a youth organisation but was to involve all ages and, very daring for the times, it was open to both sexes. The ideas of world peace and the regeneration of urban man through the open-air life replaced the nationalism and militarism Hargrave had detested in the post-World War I Scouts. Kinsmen and women were organised in Clans, Tribes and Lodges. Each individual took a 'woodcraft name', inspired by their ideas of 'Indian-style' names. The correct costume had to be hand-made by each individual or 'rooftree' (family group) and while the everyday 'habit' of Saxon hood, jerkin, shorts and long cloak must have seemed outlandish enough in the English countryside of the early 1920s; for ceremonial occasions, brilliantly coloured surcoats or silk-embroidered robes were worn by the various office-holders such as the Tallykeeper, Campswarden, Ritesmaster and Gleeman. Hargrave himself was 'Head Man' and his leadership was dynamic, inspirational and frankly autocratic. The Mark of the Kindred of the Kibbo Kift is typical of the symbolism that can be seen in many of their designs. Its meaning is: Worship (The K sign) Forever (the Circle of Unity and Eternity) Life (the Flame) through Knowledge (the Tree). Or again, ‘Worship Life Forever with Knowledge’. The Kibbo Kift's central activities of hiking and camping were refined and elevated to the level of a spiritual exercise. The weekend 'Tribal' Camps and the great annual 'Althing' were marked by colourful and impressive ritual, inspired by their ideas of what Native American ceremonies might be like, but couched in language reminiscent of the Norse Sagas and rich in Saxon archaisms. Kinsmen were not only required to make their own lightweight, one-man hiking tents (the first seen in England) but to decorate them with vivid, symbolic designs of their own devising. Influenced by Hargrave's own artistic taste, an ultra-modern 'futurist' style of design became general, and the robes, regalia, tents and other items of decorative art, often of an extremely high standard, represent an extraordinary 'democratisation' of the avant-garde art of the day. The Kibbo Kift were never more than a few hundred strong. Kinsmen and Kinswomen included the Suffragettes Emmeline Pethick Lawrence, Mary Neal and May Billinghurst, the journalist Henry Nevinson, the photographer Angus McBean, and Ruth Clark. The Advisory Committee included Havelock Ellis, Maurice Maeterlinck, the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore, H. G. Wells and Professor Julian Huxley. D. H. Lawrence took an interest in the Kindred and it has been suggested that Mellors in Lady Chatterley's Lover is based on an archetypal Kinsman. The growth of the Kibbo Kift was not without its setbacks. In 1924, the South London co-operative lodges challenged Hargrave's leadership, and seceded from the movement. They established thei [Attributes: First Edition]

The Exile. [Complete in 4 Vols.]

Paris Vol. 1 Chicago: Pascal Covici Vols 2&3 and New York: Covici Friede Spring & Autumn -1928 1927 - FIRST EDITIONS, pages of first volume a little toned, single-word pencil annotation beside Pound's name on p. 93 of second volume, pp. 92; [iv], 121, [2]; [iv], 109, [2]; [iv], 117, foolscap 8vo, original orange or red wrappers printed in black, backstrip of first volume a little darkened as are the untrimmed and largely unopened edges, water-speckling to front of final volume, Vol. 3 with two puncture marks at head of front, one of which extends to first handful of pages though not affecting text, and a small tear to bottom corner, good condition overall. As Tryphonopoulos and Adams note in their 'Ezra Pound Enclyclopedia', Pound used 'The Exile' for the express purpose of printing 'a range of work from friends and acquaintances'; amongst this roll-call are John Rodker, Richard Aldington, Ernest Hemingway (mis-initialled as 'E.W.' on the front of No. 1), Carl Rakosi, Bob McAlmon, W.B. Yeats, Louis Zukofsky, William Carlos Williams, and John Allen Cournos - with a liberal sprinkling of Pound himself. Parts of Cantos XX and XXIII make their first appearances here, with the majority of his contributions taking the form of editorial comment. Hemingway's contribution, curt as it is, has had its title hand-corrected (from 'Nothoemist Poem' to 'Neothomist Poem') by Pound in pencil, as in each of the 500 copies of this first number.
