"We." The Famous Flier's Own Story of His Life and his Transatlantic Flight

318 pp. Original cloth and dust jacket. Very good. FIRST EDITION. An important presentation copy inscribed and signed by Lindbergh on the portrait frontispiece to Donald E. Keyhoe. On May 20, 1927, Lindbergh left Roosevelt Field, New York in The Spirit of St. Louis. 33 ½ hours later he landed in Paris to a hero's welcome, completing the first solo flight across the Atlantic. This is Lindbergh's book on his great achievement. "We" in the title refers to Lindbergh and his plane. The naval aviator Donald Keyhoe, recipient of this presentation copy, managed Lindbergh's triumphant 48-state tour after the Atlantic crossing. Keyhoe had been a Navy pilot of both balloons and airplanes and in later years was a successful author and test pilot, as well as a leading early authority on UFOs. Keyhoe has signed and inscribed this book. Although signed copies of this book are not uncommon, presentation copies of this quality and interest are rare.

Three original ink and watercolour drawings of Duncan by the American modernist artist Abraham Walkowitz

"[Duncan's] insistence on dancing to concert music paralleled her belief that dance was an art capable of expressing the highest aspirations of the soul. She admired the integration of dance in ancient Greek ritual and theater, and took inspiration from Greek sculpture. The simplicity of her costumes, which were based on Greek tunics, was matched by the unadorned curtains she used as her stage setting. She wished to reinstate in dance the sense of naturalness she perceived in the ancient Greeks and showed that simple movements such as walking, running, and skipping could be used as expressive components of the dancer's movement vocabulary. Although her work is generally regarded as a precursor of modern dance, Duncan also influenced ballet choreographers such as Michel Fokine, particularly in introducing a freer, more fluid use of the torso, untrammeled by the corset that was then a part of the ballerina's uniform. Her simplicity and naturalness seemed radical to audiences accustomed to the visual and choreographic extravagances of the ballet... Her name has evoked a daring, unfettered spirit, and her willingness to defy convention blazed a path for the dancers and choreographers who followed her." Susan Au in Grove Music Online. Walkowitz was born in Tyumen, Siberia to Jewish parents... He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City and the Académie Julian in Paris under Jean-Paul Laurens. Walkowitz and his contemporaries later gravitated around photographer Alfred Stieglitz's 291 Gallery, originally titled the Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession, where the forerunners of modern art in America gathered and where many European artists were first exhibited in the United States... Walkowitz's dedication to Duncan as a subject extended well past her untimely death in 1927. The works reveal shared convictions toward modernism and breaking links with the past. In 1958, Walkowitz told Lerner, "She (Duncan) had no laws. She did not dance according to the rules. She created. Her body was music. It was a body electric, like Walt Whitman... While never attaining the same level of fame as his contemporaries, Walkowitz' close relationship with the 291 Gallery and Alfred Stieglitz placed him at the center of the modernist movement. His early abstract cityscapes and collection of over 5,000 drawings of Isadora Duncan also remain significant art historical records." Wikipedia.. Each drawing ca. 170 x 165 mm. All signed by the artist ("A Walkowitz") in ink at lower portion of sheet. Slightly worn, browned, and stained; remnants of mounting adhesive to verso.

        Now We Are Six

A Beautiful First edition copy of the third instalment of Milne's classic winnie the pooh series and a rare find in this condition. Published by Methuen, London; 1927. This lovely book is in Near Fine condition. It is tightly bound in original red boards, with gold gilt detailing to the front and lettering to the spine. There is some bumping to the corners and spine ends, with some minor loss to the base of the spine, but apart from this and a slight darkening to the spine, the boards are in very nice condition. Internally, the pages are clean and bright and free from blemishes or damage. There is only the slightest hint of toning or age spottingto the page edges and the book is in very smart condition. Provenance: There is a neat gift inscription to the top right corner of the title page dated 1927. The dust jacket is in Near Fine condition, with just some minor chipping to the edges and corners, particularly the spine ends. There are just a couple of slight marks, and a darkening to the spine from sitting on a bookshelf, but the panels retain some of their lovely original colour and the jacket is bright and smart. A lovely copy of this first edition and an ideal book to invest in!

Art Notes Bound issues 1-85 complete

1927. Softbound. Covers are poor. Contents are VG+. 7 Volumes bound in crumbling thin flexible leather. Profusely illustrated in bw. All edges are gilt. This stunning ensemble includes the issues of Art Notes bound as follows: 1-12, 13-24, 25-36, 37-48, 49-60, 61-73, 74-85. These small publications from Macbeth Gallery in New York are incredibly scarce. Macbeth Gallery was the pre-eminent dealer for American Art in NYC beginning in the 1890s. They published these small booklets to both promote their stock and to educate their customers. They are filled with anecdotal and ephemeral information that will not be found elsewhere. In 23 years, this is the first set of these I have had, and likely the last I will see.

8vo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, boards ornamented in gilt and blind, all edges gilt; pp. vii, 217; front endpapers removed in the 1920s when two manuscript notes were tipped in, the first from R. In the scarce dustwrappers. Volume one shows a Bell photograph of H. M., King Faisal of Iraq (the country Bell was essentially responsible for establishing); volume two shows a Bell photograph of Auda, Chief of the Abu Tayi. The dustwrappers are soiled and have been strengthened with archival tape along the top of volume one and at the spine tips of both volumes, but they give a very good appearance. Gertrude Bell died in 1926 after a lifetime as a writer, traveler, spy, archeologist, cartographer, and founder of modern Iraq. Her stepmother, Lady Mary Bell (basically the only mother she ever knew), has gathered letters from her girlhood until the end of her life. Here you will find what a brilliant observer and writer she was and why she was able to exert such an influence in the politics of post World War I Arabia, and which earned her the popular title of "Queen of Arabia"

List of the Officers of the Bengal Army, 1758–1834

London: Constable & Company Ltd. [vols. 2 & 3]; Phillimore & Co. Ltd. [vols. 3 & 4],, 1927-46. Alphabetically Arranged and Annotated with Biographical and Genealogical Notices. 4 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, spines lettered and ruled in gilt, blind rules to covers, bottom edges untrimmed (fore edges also untrimmed in volumes 3 & 4). With the dust jackets for volumes 1 & 2. Edges spotted, endpapers browned, short split to vol. 1 inner hinge, vol. 3 very slightly sunned along extremities, vol. 4 spine rolled, the 2 dust jackets spotted, with slightly chipped and frayed spines and joint-ends, and a few other minor nicks or chips. An excellent, bright set. First edition of this extremely uncommon and indispensable reference work, containing over 7,000 records and much improved and expanded from its predecessor, Dodwell and Miles's Alphabetical List, which was published in 1838. There was an 18-year hiatus between the publication of the second and third volumes, and the dust jackets of the first two volumes state that the print-run was limited to 500 copies of each, of which 450 were for sale; the final two volumes were also issued in a limited edition, though the number of copies is not stated. We trace four complete sets in auction records in the last 50 years, with no recorded mention of the dust jackets. Hodson (c. 1883-1963) was an officer in the Indian Army.
