Moscow: Kino-izdatelstvo RSFSR Kinopechat, 1927. 112 pp. 13,5 x 17,5 cm. Original illustrated photomontage wrappers. Tiny tears of the spine, Georgian stamp on the title page 'From books of Nico Mitsishvili'. Otherwise very good. Very rare. First and only edition. One of 3500 copies. The constructivist edition by Mikhail Levidov (1891-1942) who was well-known Soviet writer and journalist of 1920s. Levidov was the author of the articles on cinema, literature and theatre. He worked with the avant-garde magazine LEF. In 1926 Levidov devised the 'Big Five' of early Soviet cinema consisting of Kuleshov, Eisenstein, Pudovkin, Vertov and Room. This book is about a part which cinema had in the lives of Soviet people and people from capitalistic countries. He also systematized American cinema dividing it into four categories and explain the reason why these categories were unsuitable for Soviet viewers. Nico Mitsishvili (1896-1937) was well-known Georgian writer and poet, the member of the Georgian symbolist group Blue Horns. He compiled and published in Russian the book 'Poets of Georgia' (1922), which included translations of Blue Horn poets by Osip Mandelstam. He met Mandelstam in Batumi in 1920 when he escaped from Civil War to Georgia and was detained. These memories were written in Mitsishvili's 'Shadow and Smoke' (1930). He was also the chief editor of the publishing house of the Russian-language newspaper Zaria Vostoka where Vladimir Maiakovskii and Sergei Esenin worked. The first one, the text volume, was published in 1927, seven years after the plates volume, as issued. The second volume contains 120 photographic plates splendidly reproduced in photogravure. The plates depicts monuments and inscriptions found in the city of Jerusalem, and introduced in the first volume (lacking in this collection). However, it also contains the monuments and inscriptions found in Haram al-Sharif (Temple Mount) which are introduced in our text volume.Ex-library copies with stamp at upper and lower paper edges, and bookplate on inside of each front cover. Original wrappers of the plates volume expertly repaired. Text and captions in French. Binding and interior in overall very good condition. About the author: Max van Berchem (1863-1921) was a Swiss epigraphist and historian. Best known as a pioneer of Arabic epigraphy, he created "Corpus Inscriptionum Arabicarum," an impressive collection of Arabic inscriptions gathered during his scientific expeditions to Egypt, Jerusalem, Palestine, and Syria. Being aware of the enormity of this project, he divided the work amongst others, mostly French and German scholars, with Berchem, for the most part, limiting his personal investigations to the cities of Cairo, Jerusalem and Damascus. In his work, he used photography as a means to record Arabic inscriptions. Between 1895 and 1914, he dedicated most of his time and energy towards the publication of the large amount of textual material that he had accumulated. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        HATSUMEI THE INVENTION 40 issues

, 1927. 1927. Paperback. Good. [MAGAZINE] TEIKOKU HATSUMEI KYO^KAI. HATSUMEI THE INVENTION 41 issues. To^kyo^, Maru-no-uchi. Magazines, bound Western style in decorated wrappers. 1927 - 1943. About 26 x 19 cm in size. This important magazine began in 1905. The Imperial Science and Invention Society, that published the magazine, built a permanent research facility for inventors in the Meguro area in Tokyo about the time of the earthquake. The magazine continued after the war and is still in publication today. This group of issues is as follows: Vol. 24 [1927], #s 3,4,5,7; Vol. 27 [1930] #s 9 & 11; Vol. 29 [1932] #s 5 & 7; Vol. 34 [1937] #s 6-12; Vol.35 [1938] #s 9 & 10; Vol.36 [1939] #9; Vol.37 [1940] #s 2,4,6-9, 12; Vol.38 [1941] #s 2- 4,10,12; Vol.39 [1942] #s 2,4-6,8,9,12; Vol.40 [1943] #s 1,2,4,5. The earlier issues are dedicated to civilian inventions, though as war looms in the late 30s and arrives in the 40s, the inventions grow warlike, as well. However, in 1943, there is a strange cover photo of a torn Japanese flag seemingly hanging at half staff - odd message, indeed, in the middle of a total war. Overall good or better condition with occasional soiling and edgewear. Very unusual in the marketplace.

        Vingt-Cinq Costumes pour le Theatre.

Paris: Camille Bloch & Jules Meynial, 1927. A remarkable collection of elegant theatrical costume designs signed by leading French Art Deco designer George Barbier (1882-1932) and a portrait frontispiece of Barbier by his friend and rival Charles Martin. Although primarily a book illustrator, Barbier applied his considerable skill to fabric design, posters, jewellery, wallpapers and commercial wrappings. He rose to prominence on the Parisian scene after his first exhibition of 1911 and worked under the creative direction of Diaghilev for the Ballets Russes, issuing a portfolio of designs for Nijinsky in 1913. The designs featured in Vingt-Cinq Costumes pour le Theatre show Barbier at the height of his artistic career. Quarto, portrait frontispiece, edition limited to 260 copies, 24 page introduction with 25 pochoir colour plates, each signed by the artist and mounted on tinted grey Arches paper; bound in original polished half-calf with black lettering, a fine and elegant copy.

        KEW GARDENS

Hogarth Press 1927 - Third edition, the first edition illustrated throughout by Vanessa Bell, one of 500 copies, this copy unnumbered. Original paper covered boards, decorated by Bell in blue, green and brown, with a contemporary brown paper dustwrapper. A fine copy, exceptionally well preserved with the boards uncommonly bright and clean with just a little pushing to the head of the spine. First published in 1919, Kew Gardens was Woolf's third published book and the first book to contain illustrations by her sister Vanessa (frontispiece and tailpiece). Its unexpected success was "the most dramatic factor in the Woolfs' becoming significant commercial publisher" (Woolmer p. xxiii). The flood of orders meant that a second edition had to be produced quickly with the help of professional printer Richard Madley. This third edition, published some eight years later, is in terms of production, an entirely new work, being in a larger format with cover illustrations in colour and new illustrations throughout by Vanessa Bell. Due to the fragility of the paper covered boards, it is exceptionally rare in a fine state. Kirkpatrick A3; Woolmer 7 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
