THE CASE BOOK OF SHERLOCK HOLMES

1927. New York: George H. Doran Company, (1927). Original grey cloth lettered in red, with dust jacket. First American Edition of the fifth and last collection of Sherlock Holmes adventures -- twelve cases including those of "the Illustrious Client," "the Mazarin Stone," "the Three Garidebs" and "the Veiled Lodger." After each of the Sherlock Holmes volumes (except the first), Doyle claimed that he was through with Sherlock; here, Doyle in his preface again says "And so, reader, farewell to Sherlock Holmes!" -- and this time he meant it.~This copy is of the second issue (in grey rather than tan cloth, and with no publisher's colophon on the copyright page); there was also a third issue, in red cloth lettered in black. The volume is in fine condition. Included is the uncommon dust jacket (likewise second issue -- the same as the first except that there are four reviews, rather than a publisher's blurb, on the rear panel); it is in near-fine condition (rose color on spine faded as usual, a couple of short tears but nothing lacking). Green & Gibson A46c (see final note). Housed in a felt-lined morocco-backed clamshell case.

        Découverte de Longview

48 pp. documentary-style volume in French on the city of Longview, Washington, built specifically to house 14,000 labourers from the lumber industry, each page with modern typography and American flag decorative borders, illustrated throughout with striking Expressionist-style woodcuts by Masereel. Small 4to. Original pigskin binding with geometric embossing designed by René Kieffer, with small label for Kieffer applied to inside front endpaper. Some minor rubbing to extremities. Paris (Éditions René Kieffer) 1927. One of a limited edition of 200 copies. Longview was one of the first cities to be completely designed and planned out, and then built to those exact specifications, as opposed to most cities which develop naturally and grow over time. It was finished in 1923, and several years later Luc Durtain (the pseudonym of Andre Nepveu, a doctor and author) wrote a story on it. Durtain was interested in surroundings undergoing rapid change and individuals being forced to adapt. For his writings, he traveled to America, Russia, and Asia, covering passion, society, and human behavior. His volume on Longview bears a resemblance to a travel guide. Frans Masereel was a Flemish painter and graphic artist known worldwide for his expressionistic and sociocritical woodcuts, as well as his wordless novels. He was a member of the "De Vijf" or "Les Cinq" group of artists, together with Jan Cantre, Jozef Cantre, Henri van Straten, and Joris Minne.

Lektsii o rabote bolshih polusarov golovnogo mozga. [Russian. i.e.: Lectures on Big Cerebral Hemispheres].

Moskva, 1927. 8vo. Contemporary black half calf with gilt lines and gilt Russian lettering to spine. Inscribed by Pavlov to front end-paper. Annotated in pencil and crayon throughout (by Podkopaev?). A fine and clean copy. 371 pp. ¶ First edition, presentation-copy, of one of Pavlov's most important and influential works, his lectures on the function of the cerebral hemispheres, which sums up all of his work on the higher central nervous system of the dog and thus began the branch of physiology that has to do with higher nervous activity. The work is considered a foundational classic in the history of psychology, linking the central nervous system to the nature of human psychic illness. The interesting presentation-inscription states: "Nikolayu Alexandrovichu Podkopaevu u postroyke etogo zdaniya v 25-letie s ego zakladki ot iniziatora dela." [In Russian, i.e.: "To Nikolay Alexandrovich Podkopaev, the participant of building this edifice, on the 25th anniversary of the foundation, from the initiator of the work."].Nikolay Podkopaev (1892-1950) was one of Pavlov's students, with whom he worked closely. The building mentioned in the inscription is one of the new buildings of the Institute of Experimental Medicine, of which Pavlov was responsible, and in which he founded the physiology section. He worked there until the 1930'ies. The notes and corrections in the present copy are presumably by Podkopaev. Having in 1897 published his groundbreaking work on the digestive glands, based on 12 years of experiments with dogs - the experiments that earned him the Nobel Prize (1904) - Pavlov turned to the physiology of behavior. In the course of his investigations on the physiology of digestion, he had encountered the phenomenon of "psychic" salivation and he wished to study this further. "Using the concept of the reflex as an elementary response of the organism to external stimulus, Pavlov termed the normal digestive reaction and unconditioned reflex, and the activity of the salivary glands, stimulated by various environmental agents, a conditioned reflex." (D.S.B. X:433). In 1903 he made his first public statement of the conditioned reflex, but he kept working on the subject, ultimately aiming at the nervous connection behind the reflex. Pavlov localized conditioned-reflex activity in the cerebral hemispheres of the brain and demonstrated that the center for this activity is to be found in the cortex, among the cortical agent of innate reflexes. It is this groundbreaking discovery that is fully presented in the present work, which thus constitutes a milestone in the history of psychology. In the present work, Pavlov fully develops his theories on the cerebral hemispheres and the nervous system. He documents the physiological activity of the cerebral cortex and links the central nervous system to the nature of human psychic illness. "The cerebral hemispheres stand out as the crowning achievement in the nervous development of the animal kingdom. These structures in the higher animals are of considerable dimensions and exceedingly complex, being made up in man of millions upon millions of cells -- centres or foci of nervous activity -- varying in size, shape and arrangement, and connected with each other by countless branchings from their individual processes. Such complexity of structure naturally suggests a like complexity of function, which in fact is obvious in the higher animal and in man. Consider the dog, which has been for so many countless ages the servant of man. Think how he may be trained to perform various duties, watching, hunting, etc. We know that this complex behaviour of the animal, undoubtedly involving the highest nervous activity, is mainly associated with the cerebral hemispheres. If we remove the hemispheres in the dog [Goltz and others], the animal becomes not only incapable of performing these duties hut also incapable even of looking after itself. It becomes in fact a helpless invalid, and cannot long survive unless it be carefully tended. In man also the highest nervous activity is dependent upon the structural and functional integrity of the cerebral hemispheres. As soon as these structures become damaged and their functions impaired in any way, so man also becomes an invalid." (The beginning of Lecture 1 of the present work, in Anrep's translation). The effects of the work of Ivan Petrovich Pavlov (1849-1936), "one of the greatest physiologists of all time" (G&M) to the understanding of the mind of mankind can hardly be overestimated. His influence has been enormous and reached far beyond the boundaries of medicine. Bertrand Russell, for instance, was as an enthusiastic advocate of the importance of Pavlov's work for philosophy of mind.A second edition of the work was published the same year, as was an English translation: "Conditioned Reflexes. An Investigation of the Physiological Activity of the Cerebral Cortex". Translated and Edited by G. V. Anrep. Oxford University Press/ Humphrey Milford, 1927

Correspondance littéraire de 29 lettres d'André Maurois.

      - 29 lettres autographes signées (11), cartes A.S.

».         An Adventure in Constructive Finance [Inscribed to Arthur W. Page]

Doubleday, Page and Co.. Hardcover. New York, 1927. 8vo, publisher's quarter cloth over paper covered boards, 423 pp. Inscribed to Arthur Page, Esq., vice president and director of AT&T : To Arthur W. Page, Esq. / Whose counsel and encouragement / were almost an indispensable factor / in the production of this work / with an expression of deep appreciation / from Carter Glass / April 1927." Glass's classic memoir of the period in which the Federal Reserve was established: "Named to the House Banking and Currency Committee, he quickly became one of its most knowledgeable and influential members and its chairman in 1912. With the assistance of economist H. Parker Willis, Glass was the primary author of the 1913 law that set up the Federal Reserve System. The act established an elastic currency that could expand or contract in response to the needs of the economy. Although Glass initially proposed a decentralized system under private control by bankers, President Woodrow Wilson insisted that the twelve Federal Reserve district banks be controlled by a central public board. Glass joined the Wilson administration as secretary of the treasury on 16 December 1918, remaining until February 1920, when he resigned to fill the Senate vacancy caused by the death of Thomas S. Martin. He won reelection to the Senate and served there for the rest of his life." - ANB. A very good plus copy with some small stains to rear board, else near fine.
