[Photo Album]: "Stonyhurst" Waterbury, Connecticut and Yellowstone

Yellowstone, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, 1926. Very Good. Oblong octavo. Black leather over paper boards measuring 7" x 11.5". Assembled are 224 sepia toned and black and white photographs affixed to stiff black paper in various sizes ranging from 1.5" x 3" to 7" x 9". A few pages detached but present, rubbing, and short tears else very good. A photo album compiled by Milton S. Mulloy which begins in 1923 with pictures from his college days at Stonyhurst College in Waterbury, Connecticut and continuing through his travels over the next few years. Many of the excursions are in the New England area including, swimming in a river in Salisbury, New York, a visit to Amherst, Smuggler's Notch, Vermont. The mountains, waterfalls, and trees of the region are documented in the photos as well as group photos and one of a friend captioned "Dapper Dan" posing on top of "Chapel Tower." Mulloy's expeditions also took him to the midwest including a short stay in Montana en route to Yellowstone National Park. In over 100 photographs Yellowstone is depicted in all it's glory from the "Paint Pots" to Old Faithful "in action." There are images of Artist's Point, the Great Falls, and various wildlife including a buffalo and a bear captioned, "the holdup near." Within the album are two panoramas from the geyser basin of West Thumb and of the wharf, as well as a photograph of a Native American in full regalia captioned "one of the originals." A wonderful collection of photographs with an emphasis on Yellowstone.

Einstein on the Search for Understanding: "Using such apothecary’s methods one cannot reveal any of God’s secrets, I think." A Swiss chemist’s work leaves Einstein cold, but Schrödinger "has the scent of a deeper truth."

Berlin 1926 - Autograph Correspondence Card Signed, to Michele Besso, May 1, 1926, Berlin. In German. 1 p., 4 1/4 x 5⅞ in. Complete Translation[1] 1 May 1926Dear Michele, I read that paper[2] right away at the time, but I don't think that anything more profound lies behind it. There is, naturally, a rough connection between a decrease in volume and energy, and from here one can try to come nearer to the empirical phenomena by introducing further parameters. But this happens in such a way that neither rhyme nor reason can be made of it. It is very reminiscent of Traube. Using such apothecary's methods one cannot reveal any of God's secrets, I think. Schrödinger did a couple of wonderful studies on quantum rules (Ann d Physik).[3] That has the scent of a deeper truth. Let it be explained to you. I'm coming to Switzerland in July. End of July is LN meeting in Geneva.[4] Then I'm going somewhere in the mountains with Tete. So I'll visit you, or else we can meet. Warm regards, also to Anna and Vero, your AlbertHistorical BackgroundEarly in 1926, Michele Besso sent Einstein an early draft of a paper by Swiss chemist Gottfried Beck on quantum mechanics. Beck had initially submitted the paper to the Swiss scientific journal Helvetica Chemica Acta, which rejected it as too speculative. On April 25, 1926, Besso wrote to Einstein about Beck's paper. After discussing the details, he writes, "This surely is an amusing thing; I was surprised that you didn't write me anything about it. Here, too, reality is once again simpler than the theoretical conceptions would lead one to expect."[5]Three months later, Einstein wrote to Besso regarding Beck's paper: "it is obviously particularly painful to use the quantum condition together with the equations of motion here, because the validity of the latter appears to be irreconcilable with the validity of the former." Einstein was skeptical that Beck's equation "has any reality left within it in the face of quanta. I vigorously doubt it." However, Einstein found the construction of the left side of the equation "surely contains a deeper truth." Einstein declared to Besso, "I cannot make myself glue two things together (like the left- and right-hand sides of this equation) that have nothing to do with each other logico-mathematically."[6]Michele Besso (1873-1955) was born in Zurich, Switzerland, into an Italian Jewish family. He was a close friend of Albert Einstein when they worked together at the Federal Polytechnic Institute in Zurich and at the patent office in Bern, where Einstein helped Besso get a job. Besso met his future wife Anna Winteler through Einstein in June 1897. In 1898, their son Vero was born in Winterthur, Switzerland. Einstein referred to Besso as "the best sounding board in Europe" for scientific ideas. Besso died in Geneva, just over one month before Einstein died in Princeton, New Jersey.Johann Gottfried Beck (1900-1992) received his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Bern in December 1925. He worked as an assistant to Heinrich Zangger at the Institute for Forensic Medicine at the University of Zurich.Isidor Traube (1860-1943) was born in Hanover, the son of a wealthy German-Jewish merchant. He received his doctorate in organic chemistry in 1882. He founded capillary chemistry and conducted advanced research on liquids, helping to define the concepts of surface tension and critical temperature. In 1882, he joined the faculty of Technische Hochshule in Berlin and became a professor of chemistry there in 1900. Unacceptable to National Socialists, Traube was barred from his laboratory, and he left Germany in 1934. Through the aid of British colleagues, he was provided with a laboratory at the University of Edinburgh. During his long career, he was a persistent and stubborn controversialist in opposition to various theories.Erwin Schrödinger (1887-1961) was born in Vienna, Austria. He was a commissioned officer in the Austrian fortress artillery. (See website for full description)

Two Photographs, Signed, of the First Famous Trans Woman

(1950s). Photograph Photograph. Very Good. Two 8 by 10 inch glossy black-and-white photographs of Christine Jorgensen (born George William Jorgensen Jr. in 1926), became a public sensation in 1952 when the New York Daily News ran a front-page story about her titled Ex-GI Becomes Blonde Bombshell. From then until her death in 1989 she was a very public and outspoken advocate for trans rights. Until Caitlin Jenner, Jorgensen was probably the most famous trans woman in the world. One of the photographs here is a headshot of Jorgensen wearing a tiara, a diamond necklace, and a jeweled embroidered gown. The second image is of Jorgensen with two other women sitting at a table at Lou Walters Latin Quarter in New York City. Both photographs are signed twice, once as formally as Christine and again using the shortened Chris used by her friends. The headshot is signed on the photograph; the group picture is signed above and below a paper frame from the Latin Quarter. Headshot with some loss to one word of an inscription; group picture with some browning of the print due to imperfect work in the darkroom. A nice pair of images of a ground-breaking Civil Rights leader.

        Winnie-the-Pooh.

London: Methuen & Co.,, 1926. Octavo. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in green morocco, titles and pictorial centre tools to spine gilt, single rule to boards gilt, multiple pictorial blocks to boards gilt, floral endpapers, with the original endpapers bound in, twin rule to turn-ins, gilt edges. Illustrated by E. H. Shepard. A fine copy. First edition, first impression. After the huge success of When We Were Very Young, first published on 6 November 1924, Milne was asked to contribute a story to the London Evening News. "The Wrong Sort of Bees", published on Christmas Eve 1925, was based on a bedtime story that Milne had told his son Christopher. It starred Christopher's stuffed bear, who had made his first public appearance in the poem "Teddy Bear", published in Punch in 1924 and later in When We Were Very Young. The original toy was a top-of-the-range Alpha Farnell bought at Harrods for Christopher Milne's first birthday, known initially as Edward or Edward Bear, then later rechristened Winnie-the-Pooh (after a favourite bear cub at London zoo). Winnie-the-Pooh was an immediate success and garnered even more enthusiastic reviews than its predecessor, with one critic writing that "When the real Christopher Robin is a little old man, children will find him waiting for them. It is the child's book of the season that seems certain to stay" (Thwaite p. 317). The book was first published in London on 14 October 1926 in an edition of 30,000 regular trade copies.

        Winnie the Pooh

Published by Methuen & co. London, 1926. 8vo. **Signed association copy** with author's signature to title page and gift inscription from author's brother to endpaper. This beautiful, rare book is an absolute treasure. It is in Very Good condition. Bound in it's original dark green boards with gold gilt detailing to front and spine. There is some bumping to the spine ends and board corners, and a small knock to the top edge of the rear board. There is a slight lean to the spine and some minor rubbing to the boards, but otherwis the binding is sound and in very good condition. Inside, there is a gift inscription from the author's brother on the front endpaper, reading "Nancy and Joan Bond from the author's brother KJ. J. M. Oct. 1926". The book is also signed by A. A. Milne to the title page. The pages are clean and bright with just the odd age spot and only minor toning rubbing, but largely in excellent condition. The only exception is to page 33/34, which unfortunately has a tear to the bottom of the page, to the inner edge, measuring approximately 6.5 centimetres in lenght (please see photo). Apart from this issue, this is a lovely book, in very nice condition indeed and with a close connection to the author's family. In all, this book would be a very good addition to any rare book collection, being rather special, with both the author's signature to the title page and the close association to his family in his brother's gift inscription. This book would be an excellent investment, in spite of the minor points mentioned above. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have further questions regarding this book.

TORRENTS OF SPRING: A Romantic Novel in Honor of the Passing of a Great Race

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926. First edition, First Issue with nine titles listed on the rear panel of the dustjacket. A superb advance copy of the first printing, with an original photograph of Hemingway tipped in and the printed publisher's biographical statement affixed, announcing that " "The Sun Also Rises" will be published by Charles Scribner's Sons in the Fall" 8vo, original black cloth lettered in red on the spine and upper cover. [8], 143 pp. A very fine, especially well preserved copy of Hemingway's first novel, clean and solid, hinges firm, the jacket with a bit of mellowing caused by time and with a small chip to the tip of the jacket's spine panel. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, VERY RARE ADVANCE COPY WITH ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH AND PUBLISHER'S TYPED STATEMENT AFFIXED ANNOUNCING THE FORTHCOMING PUBLICATION OF "THE SUN ALSO RISES" AND WITH FORD MADDOX FORD'S LAUDATORY COMMENT ON HEMINGWAY. THIS IS THE AUTHOR'S FIRST LONG WORK TO BE PUBLISHED. Although it was written after THE SUN ALSO RISES --"to cool out," Hemingway explained-- THE TORRENTS OF SPRING was published prior to his more famous novel. It was written as a parody of Sherwood Anderson's Dark Laughter. "It seems to have started as a knockabout parody of Sherwood Anderson's mechanized folkware" (quoted in THE HEMINGWAY READER). Written in ten days, it is a satirical treatment of pretentious writers. Hemingway received a mixed reaction to the novella that was sharply critical of other authors. His wife Hadley believed the characterization of Anderson was "nasty", while F. Scott Fitzgerald considered the novella to be a masterpiece.

- Titel verso gestempelt.
