LUDWIG HOHLWEIN. Compiled and Edited by Prof. H. K. Frenzel with an Introduction by Dr. Walter F. Schubert. Translated by Herman George Scheffauer

Berlin Phonix Verlag Berlin Phönix Verlag, 1926. Lg. 4to. (11 7/8 x 9 inches), publisher's turquoise cloth with gilt titling, spine a little sunned, but a very good copy of a book that, because of its size and weight, is invariably disbound, or altogether rebound. First edition of this bi-lingual edition devoted to the art of this innovative genius who "masters the language of the poster like no other, and whose designs for book jackets, "…are all derived from the same rich soil that nourishes the garden of his posters." If the prose that introduces the artist is a bit over the top, the more than 220 plates (in color and in sepia tone), some with multiple images to the page, absolutely convinces the reader of just how good a graphic artist Hohlwein was. From tobacco to travel, from automobiles to accessories, his posters, calendars, cigarette packs and sheet music are as fresh today as they were when they first made their appearance. An important work about an important artist, difficult to find in original condition. AN ATYPICALLY NICE COPY

Passio Domini Nostri Jesu Christi: Being the 26th and 27th Chapters of Saint Matthew's Gospel from the Latin Text

Waltham St. Lawrence: Golden Cockerel Press. 1926. Hardcover. Cream linen boards with gilt titles on spine, bookplate of the art historian Rainforth Armitage Walker who was an expert on both Eric Gill and also Aubrey Beardsley who designed the bookplate, internally clean and bright, illustrated with 6 wood-engravings by Eric Gill. Dust jacket a little darkened on spine and showing light edgewear/rubbing, one small (<1cm) closed tear to top edge of rear panel, jacket now in a protective sleeve. No.167 of an edition of 250 copies. The years between 1924 and 1933, when Robert Gibbings was proprietor, were in many ways the golden age of the Golden Cockerel Press. Under Gibbings the press would collaborate with the best wood engravers then working, such as Eric Ravilious, John Nash, Paul Nash, John Farleigh, Agnes Miller Parker, David Jones, and, of course, Eric Gill. At the time Gibbings was buying the Golden Cockerel Press Gill was moving into the rural isolation of Capel-y-ffin and a period of his life that would produce much of his best work as a sculptor, an engraver and a typographer. Gill would produce the engravings for some of the Golden Cockerel Press' most important works of the period; The Song of Songs (1925), Troilus and Criseyde (1927), The Canterbury Tales (1928), and The Four Gospels of 1931. No other wood-engraver of the period comes near to Gill's originality and verve, but the explicit eroticism of much of Gill's work shocked many of his former supporters and drew puzzled reproaches from the Dominicans with whom Gill had been associated since his conversion to catholicism in 1913. The engravings in this work are not on the scale of those in the Four Gospels but Gill's distinct style is clearly evident illustrating a latin text that Gill undoubtedly knew well., 4to 11" - 13" tall, [6] 15 [5] pp .

        The Torrents of Spring

NY: Scribner. 1926. His first novel, printed in an edition of only 1250 copies. Hemingway began the book while under contract to Boni & Liveright, who had published his first book, the collection of stories In Our Time. Hemingway was dismayed by the lack of commercial success that book had had, blaming it on the publisher's poor promotion and also on the use of blurbs by more famous writers -- most especially Sherwood Anderson, who was then the dean of American letters and Boni & Liveright's bestselling author. Hemingway felt the blurbs were off-putting and hurt, rather than helped, his book. One might also surmise that he chafed under the somewhat condescending implication of the more famous and highly regarded Anderson giving a glowing blurb to the younger, up-and-coming writer. Hemingway was working on The Sun Also Rises at the time and had completed the first draft, but he did not want to take the risk of having it presented so poorly to the world and having it get lost in the shuffle as his first book had. Although he was under contract to Boni & Liveright for two more books, Hemingway contrived a plan to free himself from the obligation: his contract stated that if Boni rejected one of his books, he would be free to terminate the contract and take his writing elsewhere. As such, he conceived of a short, comic novel which would lampoon Sherwood Anderson's most recent book, Dark Laughter, and which would be unpublishable by Boni, thus freeing Hemingway to go elsewhere. Hemingway wrote The Torrents of Spring in a few short weeks in November, 1925 and submitted it to Boni & Liveright where it was promptly, as he had expected, rejected. It was then that Hemingway moved to Scribner's, beginning his long association with the legendary editor Maxwell Perkins. Although The Torrents of Spring begins as a burlesque of Dark Laughter, it succeeds ultimately as a satire of the American cult of maleness, a subject to which Hemingway was no stranger and which would course through his writings for his entire career. F. Scott Fitzgerald later called The Torrents of Spring "the best comic [novel] ever written by an American." Mild foxing to lower edge of text block, and even milder bowing to boards; very near fine in a very good, spine-tanned dust jacket with one spot to the spine, professionally strengthened on verso at the edges and folds. . First Edition. Hardcover.

Scott Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein -- and James Joyce.

As is also noted on this volume's bibliograhic history leaf, the first printing was published by Shakespeare in 1922, followed over the next twelve months by a second and third (for The Egoist Press) which were largely met and seized by customs and postal authorities of the U.K. and the U.S. During 1924 and 1925 Shakespeare ran off fourth through seventh printings, still using the original plates but with corrections made for the errata that had accompanied the second and third; the seventh also included additional corrections listed on four pages at the end. Finally, for this the eighth printing, the type was entirely re-set (incorporating all of the corrections earlier listed separately) -- making this, technically, the second Shakespeare edition (the first through seventh being printings of the first edition). The eighth printing plates were then used through the eleventh (final) Shakespeare printing. (The actual first edition to be printed in America was a 1929 piracy copied from a Shakespeare printing, not authorized by Joyce; many copies were seized by the Society for the Suppression of Vice that October.)

This copy, still in the original blue wrappers, is in very good condition. The wrappers have some wear at the extremities (notable mainly at the top of the spine and along the rear joint). For a 735-page book bound in such delicate wrappers, this is highly-collectible condition. One could argue that, after the first three printings, this eighth one would be the next most desirable, since it constitutes the very first complete re-setting of type; with a 1922 first printing copy in this condition commanding $60,000 or more, the eighth printing (in the same binding style) provides a more reasonably-priced alternative. BEAU GESTE (Inscribed Copy with an ALS from the Author re: The Ronald Colman film adaptation)

London: John Murray, 1926. Wren, P. C. BEAU GESTE. London: John Murray, 1926. First Deluxe Edition limited to 1000 SIGNED copies of which this is #40, preceded by the extremely uncommon first trade edition which appeared and disappeared in 1924. A FINE and pristine example, having been long-protected by its original VERY GOOD or better dust wrapper (lightly dust-soiled, a few small chips but complete). The silent film version of BEAU GESTE made a star out of Ronald Colman and helped make famous to the viewing public the romantic concept of joining "The French Foreign Legion." Although the Gary Cooper 1939 version is better known, the silent film has always been considered the best of the novel's four cinematic adaptations. Laid into this copy is a two-page handwritten letter from the author (Nicosia, Cyprus, May 15, 1928) to a friend in which Wren pleasurably discusses the Ronald Colman movie ("The film was fine"). Also discussed in the letter is the movie's "talking sequel" BEAU IDEAL as well as BEAU GESTE's upcoming adaptation to the London stage. Housed in an open-end cloth box.. Signed by Author. Edition De Luxe. Fine/Very Good to Fine. Illus. by Helen McKee.

The 2 original paintings are executed directly on the vellum, one to each cover, in black, rose, charcoal and gray, using the Art Deco (Style Moderne) pictorial themes and perspectives introduced by Yan Dyl in his illustrations. CONDITION SUMMARY: Book: Very Fine. Wrappers: Very Fine. Vellum Binding: Good. DETAIL: As if unread, a very crisp, clean and fresh example: the only wear is to the added, hand painted vellum boards. SUMMARY: A fine artist's book from the era of the 1920's when there was a great creative outpouring in the book arts in France under the influence of what has come to be called Art Deco or applied modernism. PAGINATION: Confirmed complete. Not paged, but 44 leaves: Flyleaf blank, Half-title leaf with a full-page pochoir beautifully lettered with title, "Avenir Ennui"; Suite of 20 hand colored leaves reproducing Dyl watercolors by the pochoir process and printed on only side of the paper, each protected by an interleaf guard leaf printed with a line of Dyl's text; colophon leaf, rear blank leaf. SIZE: 29.1 cm, as issued. FORMAT: Vellum boards with an original painting on each cover. Publisher's beautiful, blue & green flock paper wrappers bound in, the upper wrapper illustrated with a design after Dyl with applied color and gold. Top edge gilt: headband alternates beige & brown stripes: brown silk book ribbon sewn in: additional blank leaves inserted. PAINTINGS: 1) The 291 x 185 mm upper cover painting shows a French hill town below a medieval fortress, perhaps in the Pyrénées, where the architecture of the Midi Pyrenees changes, and the stone houses have steeply sloped roofs of stone. The houses and square are laid out below the crossing tower & castle and crossing bands are painted in black and rose along the inner margin, and across the lower foreground. The title is brushed in black and rose with stylized letters that repeat the elements of the crossing bands. They may symbolize that the town was on the roads to St. Jacques de Compostelle and by custom a halt for pilgrims. There is no vegetation and the architecture is stonewalls and battlements and tall, narrow houses with sharply sloped, red roofs and overhanging eaves. 2 bent, elderly, hatted figures, dwarfed by the buildings, lean toward each other, conversing in a town square and one can also see barely glimpsed figures in opposing 2nd story windows. The composition is framed by the broad, black crossing bands, highlighted by narrower bands painted in rose with a black border and the unpainted vellum becomes part of the pictorial space, the wide ivory margins left by the artist balancing the composition. There is a powerful sense of history and enclosed spaces. 2) The lower cover painting is a center, oval vignette that plays off of the design of the Dyl upper wrapper. With black lunettes that suggest a domino inside the frame, it sustains the themes of theatre, furtiveness, and masks that characterize Dyl's art deco illustrations with their dramatic, elongated postures, cut-off frames, strong verticals and predominant use of black.
