Osnovy buddizma [The foundations of buddhism] Mongol'skaia tipografiia

Ulan Bator, Mongolia: Mongol'skaia tipografiia, 1926. Ulan Bator, Mongolia: Mongol'skaia tipografiia, 1926. 12mo (15.5 cm). Original side-stitched yellow wrappers; 108 pp. With a lithograph on better paper stock. Minor loss to spine extremities; text toned; occasional small nicks to pages; a fragile publication in surprisingly good condition. Extremely rare first edition of this booklet on the foundations of Buddhism by Elena and Nikolai Roerich, the Russian painter, archaeologist, and philosopher. The eccentric Roerichs traveled the world to propagate Nikolai's art and their own brand of theosophical mysticism, Agni Yoga. For his engagement for the protection of culture, which resulted in the so-called Roerich Pact in 1935 (still in effect today), Nikolai was repeatedly nominated for the Nobel prize. A number of organizations and museums are devoted to spreading the Roerichs' teachings to this day. Conceived as a supplement to the Agni Yoga, this pamphlet was written and published during the Roerichs' famed expedition through India and Central Asia in 1925-28 in consultation with local Buddhist teachers. The preface, presumably written by Roerich himself, draws parallels between Lenin and the historical Buddha, stating that the latter “gave the world the perfected teaching of Communism.” In a diary entry from July 1926, Roerich describes the difficulties involved in publishing a Russian book in Urga, Mongolia (Ulan Bator): “The printing of the Foundations of Buddhism is almost finished. It is difficult to give the book a proper appearance in such a small printer's shop. A former Lama who is now a lithographer is lovingly copying the image of “Conquering Buddha” with a fiery sword for the book.” According to another member of the expedition, a number of copies were sent after the caravan of explorers, which had already left Ulan Bator when the book was finally completed. The bulk of the print run and possibly the entire remainder, was reportedly burned at the printer attached to the Russian consulate in Ulan Bator. The director of the Roerich Museum in Moscow reports seeing a single copy at the Mongolian State Library. No copies found in KVK, OCLC. Not in the Russian State or National Library.

        Survey of International Affairs 1920 - … 1926

London: Oxford University Press, under the auspices of the British Institute of International Affairs, 1926-8. London: Oxford University Press, under the auspices of the British Institute of International Affairs,, 1926-8. 4 volumes in 5, octavo. Original red cloth, title gilt to the spines. 22 folding and 2 full-page maps in all. Slightly rubbed, sunned at the spines, and some splitting at the spine edge of 1925 volume II, light marginal browning, overall very good. First editions. An interesting run of the BIIA's annual volumes, offering a comprehensive survey of the global political situation in the immediate aftermath of the First World War. Compiled by Toynbee in his capacity as Research Professor of International History at the London School of Economics, and Director of Studies at the British Institute of International Affairs in London. During the war Toynbee had worked for the Political Intelligence Department of the British Foreign Office, and served as a delegate to the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. This set from the library of Brig.-Gen. Sir Gilbert Clayton - BIIA invoice in volume I - wartime head of the Arab Bureau, described by T.E. Lawrence as "the perfect leader for such a band of wild men as we were. He was calm, detached, clear-sighted, of unconscious courage in assuming responsibility. He gave an open run to his subordinates. His own views were general, like his knowledge: and he worked by influence rather than by loud direction. It was not easy to descry his influence. He was like water, or permeating oil, creeping silently and insistently through everything. It was not possible to say where Clayton was and was not, and how much really belonged to him. He never visibly led; but his ideas were abreast of those who did" (Seven Pillars of Wisdom, p.36). Volume I, 1925 comprises Toynbee's crucial study "The Islamic World since the Peace Settlement". A very nicely provenanced group. Clayton died in 1929, aged just 54, while playing polo in Baghdad; "Clayton's premature death cut short a distinguished career of great promise. In the multilateral and multifaceted arena of Near-Eastern politics Clayton, a skilled Arabist, succeeded through tact, loyalty, keen observation, and deft management of information and personalities … While colleagues and subordinates such as T. E. Lawrence achieved world-wide fame, the confidential nature of Clayton's successive offices necessarily obscured the importance of his achievements which have only recently attracted more attention from historians" (ODNB).

Helen Elna Hokinson (1893-1949), was the foremost woman cartoonist of her generation--perhaps of any generation. She sold her first drawing in 1925 to the five-month-old New Yorker Magazine, and remained a highly popular contributor until her untimely death in a plane crash in 1949. "Her work", the editors noted, "was the product of loving observation and a boundless delight in all absurdity, none more than that she found in herself...". Dogs, and their owners, were a favorite subject, and this is an early example

Mathematical Investigations In The Theory Of Value And Prices

New Haven: Yale University Press, 1926.. New Haven: Yale University Press, 1926. First edition, second printing. Octavo, original blue cloth. Inscribed by the author, "To William L. Falk with the compliments and best wishes of Irving Fisher October, 1927." Widely regarded as the greatest economist America has produced… Fisher put his early training in mathematics and physics to work in his doctoral dissertation on the theory of general equilibrium. Throughout his career his example and his teachings advanced the application of quantitative method not only in economic theory but also in statistical inquiry… Much of standard neoclassical theory today is Fisherian in origin, style, spirit and substance. In particular, most modern models of capital and interest are essentially variations on Fisher's theme, the conjunction of intertemporal choices and opportunities. Likewise, his theory of money and prices is the foundation for much contemporary monetary economics… To this day Fisher's successors are often rediscovering, consciously or unconsciously, Fisher's ideas and building upon them. He can be credited with distributed lag regression, life-cycle saving theory, the 'Phillips curve,' the case for taxing consumption rather than 'income,' the modern quantity theory of money, the distinction between real and nominal interest rates, and many more standard tools in economist's kits… Fisher's search for conceptual clarity about 'the nature of capital and income' led him not only to lay the foundations of modern social accounting, but also to argue that income taxation wrongly puts saving in double jeopardy. Fisher tuned his talents to monetary theory because he suspected that economic instability was largely the fault of existing monetary institutions. His 'debt-deflation theory of depression' was motivated by the disasters the Great Depression visited upon the world" (New Palgrave II).
