        TYPED LETTER SIGNED

Typed Letter Signed ("Herbert"; with 6-word holograph addition) on Famous Players-Lasky Corporation, Paramount Pictures pictorial letterhead, Long Island City, NY, December 2, 1926. 4to. 1 page. To Jesse Lasky, in New York City: "Enclosed is a letter I received from Percival Wren, the author of BEAU GESTE. I am also sending a copy to Mr. Zukor. I do this not because of any reference to me but rather because of what he says about yourself and Mr. Zukor as American Producers. You once said.that it was your ambition to produce a picture which could be released on the same day and date in every principal city in the world. It is naturally my ambition to direct this picture. What we all did with Beau Geste Proves that we Americans can produce a picture which will appeal equally to every Anglo-Saxon mind in the world."; Paramount Pictures released "Beau Geste" on August 1, 1927, directed by Herbert Brenon. The cast included Ronald Colman, Neil Hamilton, Ralph Forbes and Alice Joyce. AUTOGRAPHS VERY GOOD. Signed by Author(s).

Vienna: Horizont 1926 - Quarto 24x16.5cm, wrappers, 115 pp. plus 9 plates. Kassák published this book (Book of Purity) as his final statement in exile from Vienna. This book is a summing up of his previous seven years including his Activizmus, the Bildarchitektur-Képarchitektura in visual statements and book design, poetry, fiction and manifestos. It includes a fine cover design of his own and experimental typography, the constructivist book design he he had initiated in Vienna with the Ma journal which would excel in over the coming decade and some adverts as well as abstract work. It is acknowledged to be one of his most important books during the avant-garde era. Worldcat notes only two copies of this first edition in North America.         Windsor Farms

Richmond, Virginia.: Windsor Farms, Incorporated.. 1926.. Attractive lithographed real estate map (black and white and two shades of green) for the planned Richmond, Virginia, community established in the 1920s. Descriptive text on map reads: "Windsor Farms A Residential Development on the James River at Richmond...Henrico Co...Virginia made for Windsor Farms Inc. Richmond Va. by Allen J. Saville, Inc. Engineering and Construction." Map is approximately 32 3/4 x 27 1/2 inches and has been folded, with breaks in the paper at a number of fold intersections, occasionally with modest paper loss. The most significant damage is an eight inch separation along one of the fold lines. Verso of the map is blank. The numerous properties in the development are notated as to size, with many of them featuring a check mark in blue pencil, no doubt indicating that the property has been sold. Scattered about the map are approximately 14 areas denoted in solid green and inscribed with the term "Reserved," thus preserving various areas of habitat within the community. Centrally located on the map is a plot identified as "Community Center"; elsewhere are located several palatial homes on large parcels of land: these are "Nordley," "Virginia House," and "Agecroft Hall" (the last two are sixteenth century English manor houses, dismantled and the materials crated and sent to Windsor Farms where they were reconstructed in the mid-twenties). The Kanawa Canal, the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad, and the James River are featured prominently at the bottom of the map. Windsor Farms has retained its identify as a high-end, much sought-after residential community, minutes from downtown or the West End. The vintage map is in good condition, with issues noted. .

TYPED LETTER SIGNED (TLS). 1 1/2 pages on letter-size paper (with 1 1/2 inches trimmed from bottom), signed in black ink, "F. B. Long, Jr.", with five-line handwritten postscript, dated 8 October 1929, to "Dear Mr. Derleth" [August Derleth].

      - Long's first letter to Derleth, written in reply to one from Derleth. As Long mentions here, he had heard about Derleth from H. P. Lovecraft (whom he had known at this point for almost ten years; he would remain one of HPL's best friends) and says here that he had occasionally thought of writing him "but during the past few months I've been too morbidly depressed to enter into an extended correspondence with anyone." Promising to "discuss the tales you mention at length in a few days" -- tales by Long? by Derleth? by others? -- he mentions the demands of other work, including "a series of articles that I very unwisely agreed to undertake for a vile subway magazine on a commission basis." In his postscript he agrees to send Derleth a copy of his book, THE MAN FROM GENOA, a 31-page collection of poems published in 1926 by Paul Cook in Athol, Mass. (famous also as the publisher, or at least printer, of Lovecraft's THE SHUNNED HOUSE). "I would gladly give you a copy, but I still owe the publisher a substantial commission on all sales. It retails for a 1.25 -- but you may merely send me a dollar." "The writing style is both formless and inflated, very much the work of a young man still looking for his own voice and under the influence of Lovecraft, who, at this point, tended towards a stilted tone in his letters. Nevertheless, an interesting document by one of the more important spokes in the Lovecraft circle. If HPL was its center, then Derleth, in his later capacity as publisher at Arkham House, formed its circumference." - Robert Eldridge. Faint fold creases and minor edge nicks, very good overall.         TOPPER: AN IMPROBABLE ADVENTURE

New York: Robert M. McBride & Company, 1926. First Edition. Hardcover. The front hinge is cracked and has been adequately if not professionally repaired at some time with glue. Spine darkened with some wear at head. Lacks the scarce dustwrapper. Good copy and extremely difficult to find signed. A classic humorous ghost story, source of both a successful film starring Cary Grant and Oscar-nominated Roland Young as Topper as well as a television sitcom starring Leo G. Carroll. Interestingly, Stephen Sondheim wrote 11 episodes for Topper's first season. This copy is SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the author "To Doctor Sanman/To help people is the/meaning of Christ." Tuck, THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY: "A meek and henpecked character is haunted by the ghosts of a mischievous girl and her jealous husband, who materialise under most embarrassing circumstances to torment him" (page 401).

        Paramount Pep Club Yearbook 1926

Paramount Pictures, New York 1926 - A wonderful find. The official Paramount Pictures release to it's closest boosters. 128 numbered pages plus numerous unnumbered pages with tipped in 4.5" x 6.5" sepia tone photos of Paramount Studios biggest stars and top executives (including Studio founder Adolf Zukor, Louise Brooks, Harold Lloyd, Gloria Swanson, Pola Negri, Richard Dix, Bebe Daniels, Adolfe Menjou, W.C. Fields, Wallace Beery, Clara Bow and some less known stars). Book also features information about Paramount's projects and history plus industry advertisements. 1926 Paramount Pep Club Inc. copyright. The club was a group of several hundred and the press run was probably just enough to distribute a copy to each member. This particular copy was for Catherine Minor, who's name is embossed on the cover in gold. Aside from some general shelf wear and some minor scratching on the cover, this copy is in tremendous shape. Pages are pristine, with the exception of 1" tears on the bottom of 2 or 3 pages, which apparently happened as the pages were being turned. Laid in the book is an 8x10 glossy photograph of Billy DeWolf, inscribed "To Catherine E. Minor, With every sincere good wish- Billy DeWolf". Photograph has a vertical fold 7/8" from right edge, and has 3/4" tear near bottom right corner. Rare. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Autograph letter signed „Freud". On the verso an ALS (1 page) by his wife Martha Freud to the same recipient.

n.p., 14. X. 1926. - 8vo. 1 page. A significantunpublished one-page autograph letter signed by Sigmund Freud, October 14th 1926. Freud comforts a woman who, it appears, is suffering from cancer; Freud himselfhad been sufferingsince 1923 from cancer of the jaw.He opens, "Dear woman, Please do not interpret my long silence as a lack of empathy onmy part! I can absolutely identify with everything such an event engenders, I just find it very difficult to put my feelings into words, particularly as one who is no longer enjoying life in its fullness, and as one who certainly doesn’t count himself entirely among the living." He goes on, "You perhaps are unable to fathom the degree to which this condition changes a person’s general outlook in regard to everything in this world. I am not trying to console you, and do not wish to disturb your legitimate grief, I only offer my heartfelt regards as your kin. Yours devotedly, Freud."To the reverse is the last page of a letter from Freud’s wife, Martha, to the same recipient – the first page of Martha’s letter was undoubtedly written on an integral leaf that isno longer present.Martha Freud writes, in part, "I would love to learn, dear Hanna, how you are doing now, whether it is possible for you to work professionally, and whether you are still living by yourself in that large house I have not visited Hamburg in exactly two years, but in our hearts we are close and enjoy our deep friendship despite the great distance between us. For today I remain with best wishes and a heartfelt embrace. Your loyal, Martha Freud." In very fine condition.Freud wrote widely on the subject of death. Ahead of his death drive theory, set out inBeyond the Pleasure Principle (1920), Freud wrote in 1915, "It is indeed impossible to imagine our own death; and whenever we attempt to do so we can perceive that we are in fact still present as spectators. At bottom no one believes in his own death In the unconscious every one of us is convinced of his own immortality."In the context ofFreud’s own writings on the subject, one might thenpresume that Freudchooseshis wordscarefully whendescribing himself as "(not) entirely among the living".A moving insight into Freud’s thoughts on his own mortality thatis unknown to scholars.         "Merry Xmas"

(1926). Original artwork, pencil and watercolor on paper. Measuring 17.75" x 15". Some chipping along the bottom edge and left-hand side with a few closed tears, mounted onto the remnants of an illustration board, but still in very good condition. Humorous scene of men and boys in a Model-T racing down a country road and almost hitting a rooster. Apparently produced by Cummings as a Christmas gift with his Inscription in the lower right-hand corner: "Merry Xmas from A.B. + E.E.C. 1926." "A. B." most likely refers to Anne Barton, Cummings' second wife. Lopez #1253. .

The Works of Theodore Roosevelt in 20 Vols; National Edition

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1926 - Complete in 20 volumes; all with dust jackets. Green cloth covers with sharp pastedown spine lables; books are clean, straight, no marks within. Volume 1 has heaviest signs of use - front hinge is cracked and jacket has some inner tape repairs. All volumes have been tape reinforced on inner folds; this does not detract from the outer look of the jackets; all are uniformly darkened somewhat at spine. This set would be a wonderful addition to the library of a T.R. enthusiast, or collector of presidential writings. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
