Cloth banner]: The Ladies Home Journal. Wild Money by Freeman Tilden full of Cooling Thrills.

Grinnell Litho., [New York] 1926 - Large litho-printed cloth banner. Measuring 45" x 34". Metal grommet in each corner. Modest wear, mostly very slight fraying at the margins, very good or better. Advertisement for the latest issue of the magazine which featured a serialized novel by Tilden, an article on Douglas Fairbanks by Vachel Lindsay, and "44 other features." The banner is illustrated with an image by J. Knowles Hare of a baby with an ice cream cone on a beach, meant to illustrate the Tilden novel. A wonderful survivor -- we've only seen a few of these sorts of cloth banners advertising magazines.

Juan Gris (José Victoriano González Pérez), Spanish 1887-1927) Juan Gris, real name José Victoriano González Pérez, was born in Madrid in 1887. His father, Gregorio González, was a well known paper manufacturer. He studied engineering at Madrid's School of Arts and Sciences. He took painting lessons with the minor academic artist José Maria Carbonero . After his fathers death, Gris moved to Paris in 1906 and remained in France for the rest of his life. He had missed military service, so he was unable to return to Spain. He settled in the Bateau Lavoir, a tenement that housed many painters, critics, and poets, and it was there that he met Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Guillaume Apollinaire, Max Jacob, and Maurice Raynal. Gris produced his first cubist paintings in 1911-1912.Gris and his wife spent the summer of 1913 with Picasso at Ceret, and the following year he spent the time spent time with Henri Matisse at Collioure. Gris returned to Paris in 1915 and suffered poverty during World War I. Daniel Henry Kahnweiler, became Gris's dealer in 1920 and wrote the first monograph on the painter in 1929. As a businessman Kahnweiler innovated many new ways of working with artists; and art dealing; - now established practise with art dealers. In 1907 when there were only half a dozen good galleries in Paris, he made contracts with artists to buy all of their work .He held exhibitions of their work and he promoted their work internationally. He encouraged the practise of Artist Ilustrated books, where a contemporary artist illustrates a work of a contemporary writer - he expanded his presentations by bringing together artists, writers and poets to produce their works as a joint project in more than 40 books. In fact as an art and literary publisher he had no equal; being the first to publish works by Max Jacob, Guillaume Apollinaire, André Masson, Gertrude Stein, Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris and many others and in so doing launched many literary careers. Due to Khanweiler helping his career and to counter hs declining health, in 1922, Gris was able to move his studio from the "Bateau Lavoir" to Boulogne-sur-Seine. In 1924 and 1925 Gris spent much of his time writing and lecturing on his views on painting. In 1924 he delivered a paper at the Sorbonne, Les Possibilités de la Peinture (On the Possibilities of Painting), which was later translated and widely published. He died in Paris 1927 at the age of forty from an asthma attack. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Hart Crane's own copy of his first book, with his later ownership Signature: "Hart Crane, Aug. '31" and his bookplate on the front pastedown.       Boni & Liveright, New York 1926 - A near-fine copy, square and tight, bound in dark blue cloth with yelllow lettering, bright and complete except for the letter x on the spine, which has slightly worn away. The unrestored original dustwrapper, which has all of the first issue points, is very good with some wear along the edges and a little darkening to the spine, which is unusually nice for this title. There are tape repairs at the folds on the verso and this copy is price-clipped. The book is housed in a custom-made cloth chemise and slipcase. Soldiers' Pay is Faulkner's second book and first novel. The story is of a return home of a wounded aviator to a small town in Georgia following the conclusion of the First World War, escorted by a veteran of the war and a widow whose husband was killed during the conflict. The quality of the work helped to launch the career of, arguably, one of Amerca's greatest authors. : Home [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        El Habitante Y Su Esperanza

Editorial Nascimento, Santiago de Chile 1926 - First edition of Nobel Prize winner Pablo Neruda's only novel. Influenced by the work of Rimbaud and Rilke, both of whom Neruda had translated into Spanish, this dreamlike revenge fantasy has an unapologetically poetic quality: in his prologue, Neruda admits: "Yo tengo un concepto dramático de la vida, y romántico; no me corresponde lo que no llega profundamente a mi sensibilidad." While El Habitante y Su Esperanza marked the end, rather than the beginning, of Neruda's career as a writer of fiction, it remains a significant early example of the experimental Latin American novel. Text in Spanish. This copy is inscribed by Neruda to American book dealer Maury Austin Bromsen, who was studying at the University of Chile in the year of presentation. No signed or inscribed first edition copies appear in the auction record: a genuinely scarce title inscribed by Neruda. Small octavo, cream-colored wraps printed in red and green. Wraps soiled with small stain to head of spine, title underlined in blue ink on the front panel, evidence of early repairs to edges and hinges. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

N.P.: Privately printed, [1926]. - First edition. 8vo. Signed and dated by the author on front fly leaf on 4/5/27. From the library of Captain & Mrs. R. L. George, Camp Marfa, Texas, April 5, 1927. Purple cloth, gold stamping on front cover and spine, viii, 215 pp., frontis. [photograph of the author's father], preface, illustrated, plates, portraits, folding map bound-in at rear of book, index. BTB 184 says, "This worthwhile account of the Big Bend region during the 19th century is especially valuable because one of Shipman's major sources was her pioneer father, of whom she writes: 'To my father, Captain Pat Dolan, I am especially indebted. He has lived on the Texas frontier for seventy-five years and with remarkable clearness of mind recalls the stirring events of the days gone by.' She also quotes extensively from other pioneers and transients in the region, such as John L. Bullis, commander of Indian Scouts under Mackenzie; A. J. Fairmore and P. Bougad on the El Paso Salt War; Mexican outlaw Victor Ochoa; and Texas Ranger T. T. Cook. The work contains chapters on the early mail routes, the boundary commission, the camel experiment and transportation, the military posts, freighting, civil affairs, Indian Campaigns, the El Paso Salt War, Texas Ranger campaigns, ranching, outlaws, mining, and Mexican revolutionary activities after the turn of the century. This is followed by a section of sketches of early pioneer and ranching families." Six Guns 2006 says, "Scarce." "In a chapter entitled 'Law West of the Pecos' the author deals with the Texas Rangers and lawlessness. In another chapter there is mention of the Lincoln County War, Billy the Kid, John Wesley Hardin, John Selman, and other gunmen of the Southwest." Near fine, bright, square copy. An exceptional copy and a fine account of the early Anglo settlement of the Big Bend region. BTB 184. SIX GUNS 2006. HERD 2063. HOWES S422. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Das Totenschiff [The Death Ship]

Berlin: Buchmeister Verlag, 1926. Early edition. Hardcover. 256pp. Octavo [24 cm] Blue cloth covered boards with a gilt stamped title on the spine, and a gilt stamped boat design on the front cover. Publisher's orange top stain. Very good. The extremities are rubbed, the covers are slightly concave, and the spine is heavily faded. The underlying boards are just beginning to peek through at the corners. The pages are mildly yellowed. Treverton 2, Howard 1b. According to Edward N. Treverton, this edition precedes the fourth state and possibly the third state of Treverton 1. Das Totenschiff was the first book to appear with Traven's name. B. Traven is one of the most mysterious figures of 20th-century literature. His true identity is still subject to much doubt. Although Traven claimed to be an American, his most famous works were first published in Germany during the 1920s and 1930s. Nothing definitive is known about Traven's beginnings. Never the less, Traven's novels have been translated into more than 30 languages and they have sold more than 25 million copies.
