[Original art posters]: Crouse-Irving Flower Guild Easter Formal

[Syracuse, New York]. 1926. Two posters featuring original art. Measuring 19.5" x 30" and 20" x 29". Both are pen and ink with watercolor on stiff board. While unexamined out of the frames they appear near fine with some light toning and a few scattered smudges; one poster with six tack holes at the perimeter from when it was originally displayed. The posters promote the 1926 Easter Formal hosted by the Flower Guild of the Crouse Irving Hospital and Nursing School held on April 10th at the Onondaga Ballroom. Each poster features Jazz Age flappers with bobbed haircuts in shoulder-baring dresses, one playfully pulling up her dress to reveal her slip and bare knees(!), and the other dancing in the spotlight in front of a large Art Deco window to, we assume, Jimmy Day's Nighthawks, the local Syracuse jazz band listed on the posters. Both are signed in the lower right corners by the individual artists. A charming pair of unique Jazz Age posters displaying the popular iconography of the Twenties Flapper. .

The sheets are folded in half, and wrapped in stiff gray wrappers, labeled in pencil: "The Rock whence I was Hewn"; a few sheets are a little ragged at edges. in a custom red cloth chemise and folding box with leather cover and spine label. 32pp., in green ink on rectos only of 32 ruled sheets, signed and dated at end. 1 vols. Folio (15-1/2 x 10-1/2 inches). Byrne on Ireland. Eventually published posthumously by Sampson Low Marston in 1929, as IRELAND, THE ROCK WHENCE I WAS HEWN (the manuscript itself does not include "Ireland" in the title) it is one of the most important and personal works by the Irish-American Byrne, who died tragically in 1928, only two years after he wrote this manuscript, and never saw its publication. Byrne, although born in Brooklyn of Irish parents, grew up in Ireland and identified himself strongly with his mother country, even though he eventually settled in New York where finally made his fame and fortune. An important literary testament from an important figure in the American literary renaissance.

        North American Indians.

Edinburgh: John Grant,, 1926. Being Letters and Notes on Their Manners, Customs, and Conditions, Written During Their Eight Years' Travel Amongst the Wildest Tribes of Indians in North America. 1832-1839. 2 volumes, large octavo, original pictorial red cloth, titles gilt to spines and front covers with pictorial decoration in gilt and black, top edge gilt, others uncut. Over 300 colour illustrations on 180 plates, including 3 coloured maps, one folding. Spines faded, some light foxing to endleaves; an excellent, fresh set. A young lawyer turned portraitist, Catlin set out in 1830 from his home in Pennsylvania to record on canvas the indigenous tribes of North America and their way of life. His eight years among the major tribes of the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains resulted in his "Indian Gallery," an enormous collection of artefacts as well as more than four hundred paintings, including portraits and scenes of tribal life. The resultant book, first published with uncoloured plates in 1841, is "one of the most original, authentic and popular works on the subject" (Sabin). "The history and the customs of such a people," Catlin wrote, "preserved by pictorial illustrations, are themes worthy of the lifetime of one man, and nothing short of the loss of my life, shall prevent me from becoming their historian" (Hassrick).

THE BAT: A NOVEL FROM THE PLAY BY MARY ROBERTS RINEHART AND AVERY HOPWOOD.

The play was also the basis for a 1930 film, The Bat Whispers, which features a black shrouded arch-criminal.         Anni Albers, »Study Rug« (klein).

      - Ein fantastisches Sammlerstück für Ihr Zuhause: Visuell und haptisch ein herrliches Stück, stammt die Komposition »Study Rug« aus der Hand der sicherlich berühmtesten Textilkünstlerin des 20. Jahrhunderts, Anni Albers.

[SMALL ARCHIVE RELATING TO DOC CARVER'S DIVING HORSE SHOWS]

[Various places, 1926. Noticeable wear, creasing, and chipping at document edges. Some spotting and discoloration to two examples. Remnants of paper backing to verso of one example. Small chip to the top left corner of the photograph, with mild edge wear. Overall good. Although renowned as a marksman, William Frank "Doc" Carver also gained notoriety as the purveyor of the diving horse show, which he started around 1894 in Kansas City. This intimate archive includes the following material related to Carver and his diving horse show: 1) An original 1897 contract between H. Walker of Chicago, Carver's manager, and C. E. Cameron, representative of the Buena Vista County Agricultural Society of Alta, Iowa. The contract stipulates that Walker will "furnish Dr. W.F. Carver, Champion Shot of the World, and two diving horses, Powder Face and Cupid, and give one exhibition each day for three days commencing August 25th, 26th and 27th, at Alta Fair 1897." Both Walker and Cameron have signed the contract at bottom right. 2) Carver's retained copy of a furious two-page typed letter to the Omaha WORLD-HERALD, reacting to and seeking to refute the paper's editorial denouncing Carver's show as cruelty to animals. Carver writes eloquently of his concept behind the diving horse shows, that he "commenced the education of the High Diving Horses many years ago upon a new theory, that is, to educate them with sugar and kindness - treat them as companions and friends...." He goes on to refer to the horse diving show as "the most beautiful and sensational act the world has ever known." 3) A one-page typed letter from C.M. Young of the Iowa Humane Society to Carver assuring him that they had investigated the treatment of his horses and found that "no cruelty was practiced on your part or any unnecessary pain caused the animal in the performance. In fact, the horses seemed to be as interested in the exhibition as you were." 4) An original sepia-toned photograph, 6 1/4 x 10 1/4 inches, featuring Carver in his later years, pictured with his daughter, Lorena Carver, who was the first female rider of diving horses in Carver's show. Overall, a fascinating assortment for the serious collector of one of the finest Wild West showmen.

Falbalas & Fanfreluches: Almanach des Modes, Présentes, Passées et Futures

Paris: Jules Meynial, 1926. First and only edition of French illustrator George Barbier's Art Deco masterpiece, Falbalas & Fanfreluches, one of six hundred copies, complete with sixty vibrant pochoir plates. Barbier's brilliant eye for color, lively historical imagination, and expertly controlled line made him one of the most sought-after artists of the 1910s and 1920s: "His images are frozen stills, small in scale, yet self-contained and perfect" (Meyer & Harlow). Barbier designed costumes for the Folies Bergère and the Ballets Russes, depicted the latest styles in Journal des Dames et des Modes and Gazette du Bon Ton, provided advertising for luxury brands like Renault and Cartier, and illustrated a series of deluxe limited editions, including works of Laclos and Verlaine. He produced a series of fashion periodicals and almanacs for French publishers, including Modes et Manières d'Aujourd'hui (1912-1923), La Guirlande des Mois (1917-1920), and Le Bonheur du Jour (1920-1924). In Falbalas & Fanfreluches (Ruffles & Frills), a series of five illustrated almanacs issued from 1922 to 1926, Barbier finally enjoyed complete artistic control of his production. The literary content was provided by a series of stylish Parisiennes: the poet Anna de Noailles (1922); the novelist Colette (1923); the actress Cécile Sorel of the Comédie-Française (1924); the poet Marie de Régnier, writing under her pen-name Gérard d'Houville (1925); and the poet Renée de Brimont (1926). The primary appeal of the almanacs, however, lies in Barbier's extraordinary suites of pochoir plates, each requiring up to thirty stencils to achieve the characteristically rich colors. His theme is romance, past and present: from secret liaisons in distant lands to jaded lovers in modern Paris, all presented with a sympathetic wink. Some of the most famous plates include his interpretations of the Seven Deadly Sins (featuring Proust-reading opium smokers in "La Paresse" and champagne-toasting restaurant diners in "La Gourmandise"), and his series depicting the elements and the seasons. Text in French. A perfect set, in original glassine, of a landmark of Art Deco illustration. Five octavo almanacs, original color pictorial wrappers. Color vignette to each title page, followed by twelve pages of letterpress text and twelve loose pochoir plates in each almanac. Printed on Arches paper, wrappers protected by original glassine. Set housed in a custom box of wood, leather, and marbled paper, spine panel lettered in gilt, within a marbled paper slipcase.
