The National Being - Some Thoughts on an Irish Polity. [With an original drawing by Russell on the Titlepage].

London, MacMillan and Co., 1925. - 13 cm x 19 cm. 176 pages. Original Hardcover with original dustjacket in protective Mylar. Very good condition. Former library copy with some interesting Patina. Some old newspaper clippings on A.E. taped to the pastetown and endpaper include also a newspaper photograph of the older Russell. The wonderful drawing by A.E. signed in his full name and as A.E. Very Rare ! George William Russell (10 April 1867 – 17 July 1935) who wrote with the pseudonym Æ (sometimes written AE or A.E.), was an Irish writer, editor, critic, poet, artistic painter and Irish nationalist. He was also a writer on mysticism, and a central figure in the group of devotees of theosophy which met in Dublin for many years. Russell was editor from 1905 to 1923 of the Irish Homestead, the journal of the IAOS. His gifts as a writer and publicist gained him a wide influence in the cause of agricultural co-operation. He then became editor of the The Irish Statesman, the paper of the Irish Dominion League, which merged with the Irish Homestead, from 15 September 1923 until 12 April 1930. With the demise of this newspaper he was for the first time of his adult life without a job, and there were concerns that he could find himself in a state of poverty, as he had never earned very much money from his paintings or books. At one point his son Diarmuid was reduced to selling off early drafts of his father's works to raise money, rather to the annoyance of Russell, who accused Diarmuid, with whom his relations were not good, of "raiding the wastepaper baskets". Unbeknownst to him meetings and collections were organized and later that year at Plunkett House he was presented by Father T. Finlay with a cheque for £800. This enabled him to visit the United States the next year, where he was well received all over the country and his books sold in large numbers. His first book of poems, Homeward: Songs by the Way (1894), established him in what was known as the Irish Literary Revival, where Æ met the young James Joyce in 1902 and introduced him to other Irish literary figures, including William Butler Yeats. He appears as a character with Lizzie Twigg in the "Scylla and Charybdis" episode of Joyce's Ulysses, where he dismisses Stephen's theories on Shakespeare. His collected poems was published in 1913, with a second edition in 1926. His house at 17 Rathgar Avenue in Dublin became a meeting-place[8] at the time for everyone interested in the economic and artistic future of Ireland: his Sunday evenings "at home" were a notable feature of Dublin literary life. Michael Collins, the effective leader of the new Government, became acquainted with Russell in the last months of his life: Oliver St. John Gogarty, a regular guest at Russell's Sundays "at home" believed that these two men, so utterly unalike in most ways, nonetheless developed a deep mutual respect. Russell's generosity and hospitality were legendary: Frank O'Connor fondly recalled "the warmth and kindness, which enfolded you like an old fur coat". He was the most loyal of friends, and in the notoriously fractious Dublin literary world Russell tried to keep the peace between his endlessly quarrelling colleagues: even the abrasive Seamus O'Sullivan could be forgiven a great deal, simply because "Seamus drinks too much". His interests were wide-ranging; he became a theosophist and wrote extensively on politics and economics, while continuing to paint and write poetry. Æ claimed to be a clairvoyant, able to view various kinds of spiritual beings, which he illustrated in paintings and drawings. He was noted for his exceptional kindness and generosity towards younger writers: Frank O'Connor termed him "the man who was the father to three generations of Irish writers", and Patrick Kavanagh called him "a great and holy man". P.L. Travers, famous as the creator of Mary Poppins, was yet another writer who gratefully recalled Russell's help and encouragement. He used the pseudonym "AE", or more properly, "Æ".         Photograph Album from Egypt and Holy Land, Containing 147 Gelatin Silver Print Photographs

Cairo, Giza, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, circa 1925., 1925. Album of professional and outstanding photographs from Egypt and the Holy Land, centering largely on indigenous customs and trade, with some views of ancient and sacred sites. Contains 147 gelatin silver print photographs mounted with corners onto black cardstock leaves separated with tissue guards. Photographs measure approximately 9 x 6,5 cm. Approximately two thirds of the album is from Egypt and one third from Palestine. Oblong 8vo. string-tied leather album with embossed Egyptian motif, stitched leather edging, and patterned colour endpapers, measuring approximately 33 x 24 cm. Very Good Condition, a most pleasing album. A beautifully illustrated leather bound album houses striking superb photographs of Egyptian and Palestinian people and their traditional ways of life. Scenes of indigenous life abound in this skillful visual chronicle, which centers largely on Arabic tradition, customary gender roles, conveyance and trade of goods. Only a scant few iconic images of the pyramids and sphinx of Giza, and wooden felucca sail boats on the Nile are present. Scenes captured in Egypt are arresting, nostalgic, and indelible; the streets of Cairo bustling with vendors and working civilians. Religious traditions are shown with men prostrate in a public group prayer and mysteriously veiled women in niqabs. The men are generally photographed employing their trade, including two carpenters working in tandem to cut timber, a weaver with spinning wheel, ploughing crops with an ox-driven wood sledge, other field work, shoe shiners, a barber, and fishermen with large nets. Most interesting is a man pressing garments by foot with a hot iron. Reprieve comes in the form of smoking hooka pipes. The photographer has captured some most unusual images of entertainers, including an early moving picture box, and a musician with monkeys. Women carry terracotta vessels and baskets of birds on their heads, launder clothing in the rivers, care for infants, and sell at the marketplace. Various street vendors and food carts are photographed, selling produce, nuts, making traditional taboon or markook bread, and coffee. Great use is made of various forms of carts, from selling food, to transporting people. Men are pulling large carts stacked with bamboo stalks. A floating bridge platform transports these carts, horses and people across the Nile. Camels also prove most efficient for conveyance, as caravans cross the desert and others are porters laden with enormous sacs. Irrigation and water well systems are powered by other beasts of burden. Views in Jerusalem include the wailing wall, the Dome of the Rock, the Tower of David, Damascus Gate in the Old City, an arch covered cobblestone street, the Jerusalem Church of all nations also known as the Church or Basilica of the Agony which opened in June 1924 and is located on the Mount of Olives next to the Garden of Gethsemane. A sojourn to Bethlehem reveals its humble and authentic Old World charm with a view of Rachel's Tomb, the inside of the tomb of Jesus, magnificent churches, and more. .

He designed several gardens for the unique semi-tropical mountains of that region, most notably Les Colombières. His imaginative and romantic Mediterranean gardens, both real and imaginary, influenced artists such as the architect and garden designer, Louis Barragan. Barragan was inspired, in particular, by the "enchanted" Hispano-Moorish gardens described in JARDINS ENCHANTÉS, a few of which had actually been built, while most were pure fantasy. These are depicted in a series of evocative paintings reproduced here in color. The text is a story, or "romancero," written to accompany the illustrations. 4to (27.5 x 22 cm); viii + 72 pp. text with printed decorative borders + 36 color plates. Recently bound in marbled paper over boards with gilt titled and dated leather spine; original paper wraps bound in, some soiling to original wraps, heavier on rear cover; some scattered foxing internally, heavier on preliminaries. .

THE LIFE OF SAMUEL JOHNSON NEWLY EDITED WITH NOTES BY ROGER INGPEN

Bath: George Bayntun, 1925. One small scrape to corner leather, minor bumps and rubs, but still VG+. Two volumes. Quarto. xl, 576p; xv, 577-1172p. Edited by Roger Ingpen with 576 illustrations, facsimiles and maps, including 13 plates in photogravure. Bound by Bayntun in quarter dark blue morocco with cloth sides and marbled endpapers, t.e.g., the spines with gilt titles and panel ornaments. "'The raison d'être of this edition (well printed in quarto form, but only one column to the page) is its illustrations. Of these there are portraits from authentic originals, views from old prints, autographs, facsimile title-pages, etc,: and a series of views of Johnson's haunts, drawn specially for the book, which, so far as we can at present judge from the pen-and-ink drawings now issued, are of the pleasing kind. Mr. Ingpen's literary contribution consists of short notes to the pictures, and his industry in collecting illustrative material seems likely to deserve much gratitude from modern readers,' -- Times".         Sur L'Electrodynamique Des Corps En Mouvement and L'inertie d'un corps dépend-elle de sa capacité d'énergie, 1925

Gauthier-Villars, Paris 1925 - First French edition of Zur Elektrodynamik bewegter Korper (On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies) and 1st die Tragheit eines Korpers von seinem Energieinhalt abhangig? (Does the Inertia of a Body Depend on its Energy Content?). Both 1905 treatises are "beyond compare and without precedent, one of the greatest scientific achievements in content and one of the most brilliant in style" (Gosling, Albert Einstein). The first paper is "a landmark in the development of physics, one of the two papers that laid out the theory of special relativity, formulated a new conception of time. By assuming that the speed of light is the same to every observer moving at a constant velocity, Einstein showed that space and time were not independent: spacetime was born. According to Hermann Weyl in 1918, this theory 'led to the discovery that time is associated as a fourth coordinate on an equal footing with the other three coordinates of space, and that the scene of material events, the world, is therefore a four-dimensional, metrical continuum.' It was a revolutionary piece of scientific work" (Calaprice, The Einstein Almanac, 15). In the second work, Einstein uses "the postulates of the special theory of relativity, Einstein showed that energy radiated is equivalent to mass lost? For the first time he concluded that 'the mass of a body is a measure of its energy content'" (ibid, 16). CONDITION & DETAILS: Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1925. Small 8vo. [4], 56, [2], 6 (catalog). ILLUSTRATION: Frontispiece portrait of Einstein. EXTERIOR: Complete issue bound in original light brown stiff wraps. Some light surface dirt on the front wraps and a small area in the lower right where a piece of tape has been removed. Two barely visible repairs at the spine. Tightly bound. INTERIOR: Complete. Very small spot at the upper margin of page 3. Otherwise very good condition throughout.

[MENDELEEV AND TROTSKY. CHEMISTRY IS REVOLUTION] D.I. Mendeleev i marksizm: Doklad chetviortomu Mendeleevskovu s'ezdu po chistoi i prikladnoi khimii 17 sentiabria 1925 g. [i.e. D.I. Mendeleev and Marxism: Report to the Fourth Mendeleev Congress on General and Applied Chemistry on 17th of September, 1925]

Moscow: GIZ, 1925. 24 pp., 1 port. 22x14,6 cm. In original printed wrappers. Covers slightly rubbed, foxing, a few pencil marks in text, bookshop's stamp on the recto of the rear cover. Otherwise very good. Extremely rare. In the beginning of 1925 Lev Trotsky (1879-1940) was smashed from Stalin, Zinoviev and Kamenev's coalition, and during the year he wasn't involved in political activity. Already in 1927 he was excluded from the party and in 1929 he was expelled from the country. The process of his 'desacralization' had begun immediately, and since 1938 in every literary source he was considered as 'the universal villain, the bastard of the «bourgeois-fascist» hell, the demon of the world communist system'. This edition is one of the last printed works in Soviet Union and very rare because of the ban of his works in USSR. During 1925 he strengthened his position as an ideologist by publishing a few articles titled «To Socialism or Capitalism?» At the Mendeleev's Congress he read his report on Mendeleev and marxism, and as he was a talented interpreter and orator the report was received very well. He claimed that Mendeleev opposed religion in the preface of The Basics of Chemistry. Trotsky called chemistry the school of revolutionary thought adding that it was not because of the explosives, as explosives did not necessarily serve the revolution. Trotsky claimed that all Mendeleev's social works were written 'empirically', and that one could only understand his ideas interpreting his science and applying it to philosophy and sociology. According to Trotsky Mendeleev used dialectic principle of conversion of quantity to quality, hence he's a marxist. By the end of this skillful speech Mendeleev was turned into a marxist. Another opinion on the matter had Vladimir Ipatiev (1867-1952), Russian-American chemist who was present at the conference, and according to him «if one listened closely to it [the report], one would had unpleasant impression. Everyone who knew Mendeleev, or heard of him, or read his non-chemical works knew that he wasn't ever close to marxist ideas. He escaped poverty and knew the value of money and was very provident. He saved himself a hefty fortune, and was more like a capitalist but never a marxist. Trotsky was well-prepared and interpreted the meaning of the periodic law correctly, his data and interpretations were right but in general this lecture was useless for chemists. Mendeleev's quotes that Trotsky used to prove him even slightly a marxist were useless». A fascinating meeting of two great minds in one context. No copies in the USA according to Worldcat.

Innenteil staubfleckig. Diese Schrift ist ansonsten antiquarisch nicht beschaffbar.

New York: Chelsea House, [1925]., 1925. First edition. First edition. Near fine, clean, bright copy in dust jacket lightly rubbed along front flap fold and minor wear to the corners. Johnston McCulley (1883-1958) was a prolific author who wrote both Westerns and crime thrillers. McCulley created one of the most popular fictional characters of all time -- Zorro, the fox. Zorro first appeared in the serial THE CURSE OF CAPISTRANO published in the pulp magazine ALL STORY WEEKLY in 1919. The character received a very popular reception and therefore was made into the movie THE MARK OF ZORRO (1920) brought to life by Douglas Fairbanks. As the popularity of the character grew, McCulley published the original story in book form in 1924, using the title of the Fairbanks film. The underworld became aware and frightened by a sinister criminal that came on the crime scene and was known as THE DEMON. Then a big-time crook murdered his arch enemy and put tried to put the blame on this new criminal known as THE DEMON.
