        Ex-libris.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

        DOYLE'S ROCK AND OTHER STORIES

Oxford: Basil Blackwell, 1925.. Octavo, pp. [1-4] 5-7 [8] 9-288, original medium blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in orange, bottom edge untrimmed. First edition. "The author's first collection of short stories, many of which examine the theme of crossed signals between male and female characters. One of these (the longest story), 'She'll Never Marry,' pursues the theme into the territory of lesbianism, a notably early example, preceding THE WELL OF LONELINESS by three years, and unusual also for its presentation of Una and Evelyn as a happy, satisfied couple who pull the wool over the eyes of clueless males. Of the other thirteen stories, five have supernatural content. 'The Farm' follows a young boy into an isolated farm house where an old blind woman can sense much about his visual appearance. She envies his vitality and, as he is leaving, begs him for his *anima vitae.* He fails to understand this veiled reference but his girlfriend explains that she may have been asking him to breathe into her some of his vitality (thus losing it himself, making the old woman a kind of vampire?) 'The Buckross Ring' is an excellent supernatural tale with an ecclesiastical setting. 'Tea at Maggie Reynold's' presents another cryptical old woman presenting veiled truths to a confused young man. His surname, she explains, marks him as a descendant of a man who had tricked a mermaid into marriage. After listening to this folk tale, he walks away and begins thinking of all the violent water-related deaths of his relatives. 'The Place of Meeting' presents in play form the reconciliation in an afterlife of an ascetic monk and unrepentant heathen. 'Mr. Tookey' explores faith-healing, and throws in a ghost for good measure. All in all, a not inconsiderable collection. " - Robert Eldridge. Bleiler (1978), p. 188. NCBEL IV 744. Spine just a bit darkened, endpapers just a bit darkened, a near fine copy in very good pictorial dust jacket with shallow chipping at upper spine end and upper edge of rear panel, shelf wear at edges, several creases to front panel, and several internal tape mends. (#149811)

        THE BASELESS FABRIC

London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1925.. Octavo, pp. [1-8] 1-245 [246-248: blank] [note: first and last leaves are blanks] + 8-page undated publisher's catalogue inserted at rear, original dark green cloth, front panel ruled in blind, spine panel stamped in gold, Heinemann windmill device stamped in blind on rear panel. First edition. The author's only collection of short fiction. Eleven strange stories: madness ("Grey Sand and White Sand"), murder ("The Pledge"), horror, paranormal abilities ("Young Magic"), ghosts ("As Much More Land"), etc. Most of the stories are dark and/or morbid. Simpson, raised in Australia, moved to England right before the outbreak of WWI and served in the WRNS. She was a Renaissance woman, with impressive musical and linguistic abilities in addition to her writing, which addressed multiple subjects and genres. She became a friend and collaborator of another successful Georgian author with an interest in the fantastic, Clemence Dane. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978), Day or Reginald (1979; 1992). Not in Hubin (1994). Neat owner's signature dated 1931 on front free endpaper. Some light foxing to page edges, but a bright, fine copy in a very good 3/6 reprint jacket advertising Heinemann's "new titles for 1928" on the front flap. A very scarce book. (#152326)

        The Knave of Hearts

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1925. First Edition. Large 4to. 46 pp. 14 color plates and 9 in-text color vignettes by Maxfield Parrish (including frontispiece with tissue guard). Black cloth with color plate affixed to front cover; color illustrated endpapers by Parrish. From the estate of Agnes Marie Fraser Gump, former wife of Robert Gump who was grandson of the founder of Gumps in San Francisco, with her signature beneath "This is the Book Of" color plate. Minor wear to extremities; light rubbing & scratches to front cover illustration; small white mark to spine; front hinge cracked at half-title page but holding solid; a very good copy. Maxfield Parrish (1870 - 1966) was an American painter and illustrator active in the first half of the 20th century. He is known for his distinctive saturated hues, vibrant colors and idealized neo-classical imagery as demonstrated in this title. The Knave of Hearts was the last of Parrish's books for children and includes some of his most famous and beautiful paintings. The author was married to Max Perkins, perhaps the most famous literary editor of the 20th century.
