Uber quantentheorestische Umdeutung kinematischer und mechanischer Beziehungen; Zur Quantenmechanik; Zur Quantenmechanik II

Julius Springer Berlin: Julius Springer. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST EDITIONS of three papers that defined a discipline: THE THEORETICAL FOUNDATION FOR QUANTUM MECHANICS. "In May 1925, Heisenberg deliberately abandoned the classical picture of particles and orbits, and took a long, hard look at the mathematics that describes the associations between pairs of quantum states, without asking himself how the quantum entity gets from state A to state B... In the summer of 1925, working with Pasqual Jordan, Born translated Heisenberg's mathematical insight into the formal language of matrices, and Born, Heisenberg and Jordan together published a full account of the work, in what became known as the 'three-man paper'. The equations of Newtonian (classical) mechanics were replaced by similar equations involving matrices, and many of the fundamental concepts of classical mechanics- such as the conservation of energy- emerged naturally from the new equations. Matrix mechanics seemed to contain Newtonian Mechanics within itself, in much the same way that the equations of the general theory of relativity include the Newtonian description of gravity as a special case" (Gribben, Q is for Quantum).Heisenberg, Werner. Uber quantentheorestische Umdeutung kinematischer und mechanischer Beziehungen. Particle Physics: One Hundred Years of Discoveries: "Foundation of quantum mechanics, Heisenberg approach. Nobel Prize to W. Heisenberg awarded in 1932 'for the creation of quantum mechanics'".Heisenberg; Born, Max and Jordan, Pasqual. Zur Quantenmechanik.Particle Physics: One Hundred Years of Discoveries: "Invention of matrix formalism for the Heisenberg quantum mechanics. Systems with one degree of freedom."Heisenberg, Born, Jordan. Zur Quantenmechanik II. Particle Physics: One Hundred Years of Discoveries: "Development of matrix formalism for the Heisenberg quantum mechanics. Systems with arbitrary many degrees of freedom."IN: Zeitschrift fur Physik, Vols. 33 (pp. 879-893), 34 (858-888), 35 (557-615). Berlin: Julius Springer, 1925-1926. Octavo, volume 33 with half black cloth over marbled boards; volume 34 and 35 in half red cloth over red boards. Volume 33 is taller (wider margins) than the other two volumes. A few institutional stamps to preliminaries. All three volumes with stamps from the prestigious Gmelin Institute (after 1996, part of the Max Planck Institute). Overall, very good condition.

        The Professor's House

Alfred A. Knopf New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1925. First Edition. First Printing. Octavo (19.5cm.); red-orange boards quarterbound in purple, stamped in gilt on the spine with red-orange topstain; dustjacket; 284pp. Spine gilt is slightly dulled (as is nearly always the case), minor soiling to the topstain and some faint spotting to the front board, with mild foxing to the rear blanks and the upper right corner of the front board slightly tapped but still sharp; overall a solid Very Good+ copy. The dustjacket shows a few very shallow nicks at the crown and upper corner tips, a 1/4 inch closed tear at the upper edge of the front panel, with a few shades of darkening to the spine panel, though titles are still dark and perfectly legible. Front panel nearly detached from spine panel, held together only by a single tape mend on the verso at the crown; Very Good. Despite the aforementioned flaws, the tear is virtually invisible from the outset and shows quite nicely. The Professor's House was Cather's first commercially successful book. The 20,000 copy first printing was sold out three weeks prior to publication, and within a month of distribution the book had already outsold any of her previously published books, ultimately going into eight printings within the year it was issued.         Rupert And The Magic Toy Man (SECOND EDITION)

Sampson Low, Marston & Co, London. Second Edition. Binding: Hardcover. Book Condition: Good Condition. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. From the Daily Express Rupert Little Bear Series. Undated but appears to be a Second Edition which was published in 1925, (only distinguished from the first by the lack of illustrated endpapers) with the first three 'Little Bear' Titles to the back board. Please see scans for details of description and email for additional scans. In Paper covered boards with a brown cloth spine - with a colour illustration laid on the front board with its brown bear patterned border. The illustration shows Rupert wearing blue and white talking to the Lizard who is holding a bicycle. Pages printed in blue, red or brown with one illustration to each page. Book - The book has been professionally restored with the text block re-stitched and rebound with plain pastedowns and endpapers in original illustrated paper covered boards. The boards are a little worn to corners and edges and there is some surface rubbing to the front illustration and faint residue of juvenile additions mostly to top and bottom edges. The back board is somewhat grubby and lightly marked but the illustration and lettering remain clear and bright. The text is generally clean and bright with just the very occasional light mark and patch of surface abrasion, where it appears a previous owner was rather enthusiastic when erasing pencil inscriptions. This is especially true of the last page which shows Belinda, Rupert & Susan holding hands and is slightly browned as well as showing the indentations of erased inscriptions. An attractive 2nd edition copy of this early Rupert story. Size: 9.75 inches tall by 7.5 inches. Unpaginated. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 251-750 grams. Category: Fiction; Children. Inventory No: 5952.

These scenic studies he integrated into the documentation of the expedition. Spence 615, Renard 768, Conrad p.205.         The Lady Of The Shroud

London: Rider and Co.. VG+/VG-. 1925. 1st Thus UK. Hardcover; 1st Printing. 13, 14, 24, 30. Early reprint, published in 1925 according to Dalby. The original was published by Heinemann in 1909. With the rare original dustjacket in muted, soft colors with the macabre picture of a damsel in her shroud and the hand of 'something' (maybe human, maybe not) sneaking up on her at the edge of the front panel illustration. The book is bound in green cloth with black printing and decoration. It is straight and clean with no handwriting in it; the paper is age-tanned, a bit brittle-feeling to me, and has a few very small edge tears to end pages, and there is some light edgewear to the binding and to the spine ends. The dustjacket is priced on the front panel, and has lovely colors in the illustrations on the front and spine, blurbs for Stoker's other books on the back panel, and ads for an inspirational series and 'mental tonics' on the flaps. It has some light handling smudges and some edge chips, most noticeably at the spine ends. Protected in a removable clear mylar cover now. This is a scarce book, particularly in its dustjacket. ; 7-1/8" tall x 4-3/4" wide; 355 + ads pages .

An archive of over 110 7 1/2 x 11 inch photographs mounted on linen, and enclosed in a binder with 2 screw posts. The binder is marked "Outside Plant - General Store and Garage Equipment - General Tools and Implements as Included in Inventory and Appraisal of Property New England Telephone and Telegraph Company State of New Hampshire as of April 1, 1925" The first category tab has a stamp on it marked "Exhibit No 14 New England Tel & Tel Co, New Hampshire P.S.C. No D. 964 Witness GK Manson". Major Mason organized the 401st Telegraph Battalion from the NE Tel and Telegraph Company and was involved in analysis of the Transatlantic Cable (see Circuits of Victory by Lavine). An expert in the legal field indicated that this book was 'an exhibit compiled for use in a state rate case - a substantial portion of which consisted of proving that the physical plant included in the company’s ‘rate base’ [on which it was allowed to earn its ‘fair return’] was ‘used and useful’ and fairly valued.' The binder is a fascinating view into the state of the art in telephone/telegraph cabling and the outside plant in 1925. Sections include Pole Lines, Exchange Poles, Toll Poles, Aerial Cable, Exchange Aerial Cable, Toll Aerial Cable, Exch. Aerial Wire, Toll Aerial Wire, UG Conduit, UG Cable, Exch UG Cable, Toll UG Cable, Motor Vehicles (this section empty), Other Accounts, Submarine Cable, GNL Tools and Implements. Each section has large format (7 ¾ x 11") photographs mounted on linen documenting in visual form representative examples of the type of inventory documented in summary form on pages marked (for example) "Exchange Pole Lines Summary - Reproduction Cost - Fully Owned and Jointly Owned".Over 110 photographs total, most with typed explanations of the photograph at the bottom. Possibly a unique survival, archives of this nature are certainly scarce on the market, and worthy of study and preservation. While individual photographs are found occasionally, groupings like this which tell a story larger than the sum of their parts are quite uncommon. A fine addition to any telecommunications collection. Very Good.

        Bronze of an African figure

[circa 1925]. First. Bronze figure of a dancing male African warrior, armed with shield and spear, unsigned and without obvious foundry information. Approximately 28" high by about 12" at the widest point, and basically two-dimensional, that is, about 1/2" at its deepest point. The dore bronze is finished on both sides, indicating that it was meant to be viewed from either side, thus it was probably intended as an architectural element in a frieze or room divider, and is not currently free standing (and would probably best be mounted on granite or marble). Weight is about 24 lbs. The muscular, stylized art deco vintage warrior is reminiscent of the portrayal of African natives generally associated with the Cotton Club, that is, both caricaturized and idealized simultaneously, and is possibly an original architectural feature of that or a similarly themed establishment. The expensive casting process almost certainly indicates that very few of these were done, and they are commensurately scarce. Shipping at cost. .

[French Manuscript on the Jacquard Loom] THÉORIE DE TESSAGE [“Theory of Weaving;” spine title] / COURS DE TISSAGE [“Course on Weaving;” heading first page]

np [Lyon?]: np, 1925-1926. First Edition. Hardcover. Good +. Large folio (15.25" x 10.5"). Half-leather over brown cloth. Title gilt to spine with three fleur-de-lis elemtents, date, and "COUTURIER." Marbled endpapers. Binding good only. Leather well rubbed with some spotting to cloth. Corners bumped and worn through to boards. Splitting at top joint, but intact with hinges undamaged; overall sound. Internally very good with faint toning and occasional offsetting from materials laid and tipped in. Some elements apparently either perished or missing. Single library stamp to first page, else no other institutional markings. Calligraphic manuscript in French, black ink on unruled paper, with hundreds of hand-executed color diagrams and illustrations of weaving patterns, looms, punch card patterns, etc. Textile samples present throughout. Over 350 pages of manuscript to 179 leaves, two small sections of printed materials additionally bound in and assorted related ephemera laid in (several of which suggest Lyon as likely origin). A technical but visually striking dissertation submitted as likely final requirement in a course of study on the Jacquard loom. Jacquard's invention, originally designed in 1801, vastly simplified and improved the production of fabrics and textiles throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. In addition, its use of punch cards to control the machine represents an important development in the history of computing as the loom's cards prefigure the later use of similar punch cards in early computers. The calligraphic portions of the text include both description and analysis of the operation of the loom as well as textile design, all rendered in a lovely and skilled hand. The volume also include numerous punch card patterns, weaving designs (including more than two dozen swatches of the finished textiles, though at least as many apparently lost/missing), and technical drawings of the loom and its workings. These visual elements represent the most compelling aspect of the book: detailed, precise, and ornate, with a decidedly modern feel. A work with multiple points of interest: from fashion and design to science and engineering, with visual style that calls to mind both abstract and conceptual art.

        INQUISICIONES. Signed

Buenos Aires: Proa, imprenta El Inca, 1925 Inscribed to the great Spanish author Ramón Gomez de la Serna First edition. 8vo. A very good or better example in the original light blue wrappers - name erasure on the ffe. [Helft p.28; Becco 50], "Para el amigo y colega Ramón Gomez de la Serna / con el agradecimiento de / Jorge Luis Borges. Buenos Aires 1925" [For the friend & colleague Ramon Gomez of the Serna, with the gratefulness of Jorge Luis Borges. Buenos Aires 1925]. This is Borges' first collection of essays. The publication was limited to 500 copies & it was never reissued. Inquisiciones already contains the seminal concerns that Borges would follow for the rest of his writing life. It was never reprinted, however Borges followed it with Otras Inquisiciones, his most important collection of essays. In Inquisiciones, Borges is firmly rooted in two traditions, both classic & modern. The first is Hispanic, from Quevedo "perfecto en las metáforas, en las antítesis, en la adjetivación, es decir, en aquellas disciplinas de la literatura cuya felicidad o malandanza es discernible por la inteligencia" (perfect in metaphores, in antithesis, in adjectivation, that is to say, in those disciplines of literature whose felicitous or erroneous usage is discernable by the in tellect), & Torre Villaruel to Unamuno, Herrera Reissig, & Ramón Gómez de la Serna & Cansinos Asséns. The second tradition is Anglo-Saxon, from Thomas Browne " un ensayo bastante malo, tal vez el primero que se escribió sobre él en idioma español". ( a rather bad essay - perhaps the first that was written about him in Spanish) [Autobiografía, p.80]) to Joyce, including the idealist philosophy of Berkeley. The Germanic tradition is also present with a translation of 3 poems: "Soy culpable de la españilización de los versos". (I am guilty of the Spanish translation of these verses). It is in "Examen de metáforas" where Borges manifests the formulation of his own rhetoric which governed his writing through his Ultraist years to his later wo rks. However years later he retracts this essay: "basta un solo buen verso no metafórico para probar que la metáfora no es un elemento esencial Otro (ensayo) casificaba las metáforas como si se pudiera prescindir sin problema de otros elementos poét icos, por ejemplo el ritmo y la música". (A single good verse without a metaphor is sufficient to prove that the metaphor is not an essential element. Another (essay) classified metaphors as if one could do away with other poetic elements without any problem, rhythm and music, for example). [Autobiografía, p.80]. An extraordinary Copy.. 1st Edition.

        The Leys Fortnightly, Vol. 49

Cambridge: Severs. 1925. Lowry's first published appearances, written when he was fifteen years of age and a sophomore in high school. Lowry attended The Leys school in Cambridge, England from 1923-27 and in his second year at the school approached William Henry Balgarnie, one of the Masters at the school and in charge of The Leys Fortnightly, the school's magazine. (Balgarnie was later immortalized as the basis for the title character in James Hilton's Goodbye, Mr. Chips.) Despite the fact that normally only third and fourth year students published in the magazine, Lowry told Balgarnie he had some work that The Fortnightly might want to print. The first piece he submitted was a story entitled "The Light That Failed Not," and Balgarnie read and liked Lowry's piece enough to publish it; it was later voted the best story to appear in The Fortnightly during the year. At his teacher's suggestion, Lowry wrote under the pen-name "CAMEL," [Lowry's initials are C.M.L.], and on the basis of his first story he gained some degree of prestige at the school. He later contributed a poem, "Der Tag," and another story, "Travelling Light" to the magazine; all three pieces are included in this bound volume of all the issues of The Fortnightly published during the 1924-25 school year. Three quarter leather binding, with the school's coat of arms embossed on the front cover. Spine leather weathered; near fine in a custom quarter leather clamshell box. An attractive copy of an exceedingly scarce volume: enrollment at the school was probably on the order of about 300 students at that time, and relatively few of these could have been expected to purchase bound copies of the school magazine; at most a couple of hundred of these would have been produced, if that, and few will have survived the century. Woolmer C1-3. OCLC locates only four libraries holding copies. . First Edition. Hardcover.
