Her family moved to Berlin before coming to America in 1921 where she continued to study art. She was the sole illustrator of this attractive full color BABY'S BOOK published in January 1924 by the New York Home Office of Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. Her highly successful long career in commercial art included a cartoon series in The New York World, portrait busts to dolls, and children book illustrator. She became more famous and recognized for her numerous designs selected as sculpture medals issued by the Jewish American Hall of Fame Medals. Her first design ( LOUIS BRANDULS ) was selected in 1974 when she had reached the age of 72. A total of eleven of her designs were selected as Hall of Fame medals in following years. A collection of forty-three ephemeral Russian émigré editions of sheet music

Izdatel'stvo "Severnaia lira, ca. 1925. [Krsko, Slovenia]: Izdatel'stvo "Severnaia lira, ca. 1925. Octavos (24 x 16 cm). Single folded sheets; illustrated covers, some signed; 2-3 pp. of sheet music each; some issues with publisher's catalog. Occasional light soil and small nicks; a few issues with price stamp; overall a well-preserved set. Large collection of ephemeral sheet music issued by this undocumented publisher of art songs, waltzes, arias, and other popular music genres, presumably published in the mid-1920s. Though russo- and francophone in orientation, “Severnaia lira” was apparently based in Slovenia (and possibly the publishing project of famous Russian pianist and composer Oscar Strock). The wrappers are decorated with numerous contemporary illustrations as well as reproductions of known Russian artworks. The music represented ranges from Russian and Ukrainian folk tunes, to chansons and romances, to fashionable European dances, such as a “Kokain-Shimmy-fox mysterieux” and the “Tango-Maxixe.” Apparently over 3000 separate editions were published in the series; our numbers range from 2904 to 3092. KVK, OCLC shows scattered issues at the University of Illinois only. Not at the Russian State or National Library.

The brochure states: "Nowhere in this magnificent Southland, is it possible to find a homesite so desirably located - nestled in the finest residential foothills of Hollywood, adjoining Hollywoodland and Griffith Park, is beautiful Bronholly Park." The sub-division's name was evidently an amalgam of Bronson Avenue (Canyon Drive), the route to the homesites, and Hollywoodland, the sub-division immediately adjacent. Seventy-eight homesites are identified in the blueprint plat map; on the laid-in sheet they are listed from $950.00 to $4700.00. Dr. Carl Schultz is listed as the owner of the property. MRS. DALLOWAY

, 1925. 1925. London: Published by Leonard & Virginia Woolf at The Hogarth Press, 1925. Original reddish-brown cloth. First Edition of Virginia Woolf's well-known stream-of-consciousness novel, a day in the life (with numerous flashbacks) of Clarissa Dalloway. The Woolfs' Hogarth Press first printing consisted of about 2,000 copies.~Mrs Dalloway, a fashionable woman, gives a party, and the hours required by this event and the preparation for it enable the author to show us life and character in motion, forming and re-forming from moment to moment. The main events concern the return from India of Peter Walsh, who has been in love with Mrs Dalloway; the suicide of the shell-shocked Septimus; the arrival of Sir William Bradshaw, the specialist who had not, and by his very nature could not have, helped Septimus; and the arrival, uninvited, of Mrs Dalloway's friend Sally Seton, to whom the last word on Mrs Dalloway is given. [CGEL]~This copy, withOUT dust jacket, is in very nearly fine condition (the slightest of rubbing at a couple of binding edges). Like TO THE LIGHTHOUSE, MRS. DALLOWAY in the Vanessa Bell dust jacket now costs over $50,000; as a result, jacketless copies such as this have earned new respect. Kirkpatrick A9a.

        A GALLERY OF CHILDREN

London Stanley Paul & Co. , 1925. London Stanley Paul & Co. , 1925. First edition. Large 4to. Original blue cloth with gilt lettering and pictorial onlay to the upper cover. This copy in the original pictorial dustwrapper. A fine copy in near fine dustwrapper, which has a small tear to the rear panel, but is bright, clean and crisp. Pictorial title page and twelve colour illustrations by Saida (Henriette Willebeek Le Mair). This is Milne's first book of prose for children. The half title mentions that A.A. Milne is the author of "When We Were Very Young", which had been published to great acclaim the previous year. This book predates Winnie the Pooh by one year. The stories were written to accompany the illustrations which had originally appeared in 1923 as advertisements for Colgate. They are signed "Saida", a pseudonym for Dutch artist Henritette Willbeek Le Mair. So popular were the drawings that Milne was asked to write children's stories to accompany them in this rather large, and beautiful book.

        Autographed Manuscript Signed in French

Buenos Aires, 1925. Buenos Aires, 1925. unbound. 5.25 x 9 inches on a heavy-stock album page, Buenos Aires, July 23, 1925. Written in French with the addition of three Hieroglyphic symbols, discussing the Pharaohs, the daughter of Sun-Ra, and the Egyptian system of Justice, translated in part: "...Four thousand years before the great Jaures, the Egyptians demanded of their Pharaohs that the State rest upon the basis of Truth and Social Justice. These two great ideas being splendid stars seen by all free peoples today. The Egyptians embodied themselves in a unique figure: the Truth - Justice (hieroglyphics) Maat, daughter of Sun-Ra. And here the protestations of an Egyptian peasant/farmer are addressed 2000 years before our era, to his Pharaoh...Speak the Truth, carry out Justice, for Maat is great, she is powerful, she is eternal...and if you observe this, she will steer you to beatitude..." Accompanied by Moret's very rare printed calling card as Professor at the College of France, located in Paris. Boldly signed "A Moret" and in very good condition. French Egyptologist and archeologist who succeeded Emile Amelineau as Director of Studies for the Religions of Egypt.

The Treasure [Signed; Underskrivet] [Herr Arnes penningar : berättelse; Herr Arnes money: story]

Doubleday, Page & Company, Garden City 1925 - A Very Good copy of the first American edition, first printing (spine ends pushed, one corner turned gently inward, prior owner's penciled name, address, and "1925" to the front pastedown), in a Very Good dust jacket (small chip to spine panel's bottom also affecting a small adjoining portion of the rear panel's bottom, tear and loss to the rear upper flap fold and adjoining portion of the rear panel), SIGNED, LOCATED, and DATED BY SELMA LAGERLOF on the front free endpaper as follows: " Selma Lagerlöf // Mårbacka 14/8 1925." First published in Sweden titled "Herr Arnes penningar : berättelse" (Stockholm : Bonnier, 1904) and set in the 16th Century, "The Treasure" features Elsalill, an orphan girl who alone survived the theft of treasure from her home and the accompanying murder of her family. She dedicates her life to finding the murderers and falls in love with a nobleman, but the appearance of a coin from the treasure keeps them apart. She ultimately finds the murders upon receiving a message from the dead. After an internal power struggle within the Swedish Academy, Lagerlöf won the 1909 Nobel Prize in Literature "in appreciation of the lofty idealism, vivid imagination and spiritual perception that characterize her writings", making her the first woman ever to win the Prize. Mårbacka, the place at which Selma Lagerlöf signed this book, is the Swedish mansion in which Selma Lagerlöf was born and raised. The Estate was lost by an ancestor due to his inability to run the farm and resulting bankruptcy. Selma Lagerlöf bought the mansion (only) in 1907 and, in 1910, repurchased the balance of the Estate with her Nobel Prize winnings and other funds. Signed copies of any of Lagerlöf's works are quite scarce, especially when in English translation. A Very Good copy, SIGNED BY SELMA LAGERLOF. QUITE SCARCE INDEED. Hillhurst Park. The Foothills at the Head of Vermont Ave.

Herbert L. Cornish Co. / J.W. Wilkinson & Co. Los Angeles. 1925. - Broadside pamphlet, 9 1/4 x 4 1/2 inches, unfolding to sheet size 18 1/2 x 25 3/4 inches; on the opened sheet is a black and white plat map at left and at right a black and white bird's-eye illustrated view of Hillhurst Park. Red ink notations to plat map, long separation to right fold, 2 1/2 inch separation to left fold, other short separations and edge tear, extra vertical crease, faint soiling and wear. Beneath the December 30, 1911 headline "At the Head of Vermont Avenue," featured prominently in California Outlook magazine, is descriptive text promoting Los Angeles' newest residential subdivision, the exclusive Hillhurst Park. Completing the Vermont Avenue headline, the notice continues: "Where this magnificent Boulevard reaching from the sea to the mountains, the longest street in Los Angeles, enters Griffith Park.here, comprising a series of beautiful residence sites, lies Hillhurst Park. Hillhurst Park is the largest high class residence subdivision ever developed as a unit in Los Angeles. The improvements of its 120 ft. and 200 ft. boulevards and artistic scenic drives are to be of the very highest character that could be evolved by the most expert landscape gardeners and engineers. Hillhurst Park lies between Griffith Park and Los Feliz Avenue. The elevations of these sites for residences de luxe varies from 500 to 800 ft. above sea level. All are above the fog and frost line and in all of these grounds the rarest tropical shrubs, plants, trees and flowers can be grown. Hillhurst Park is the peerless residence subdivision. Building restrictions range from $10,000 to $25,000 in various parts of Hillhurst Park. Gas, Water, Electricity, Telephones, all city conveniences are available and every detail of the development of Hillhurst Park is to be attended to with strictly the highest degree of expert attention." The bird's-eye view map with Mt. Holly and Griffith Park at top depicts the palatial home of real estate developer William Mead (circa 1912) west of Vermont Avenue and the home (circa 1913) of Los Angeles Times owner Harry Chandler at the map's center, along with several other residences set in large estates. The plat map is annotated in red ink with lot prices in the higher elevations, and the names of Chandler, Bixley and Bradford. At lower left the terms are noted in red ink. Three panels of text on the verso extol the properties which combine "a splendid view of the city and ocean by day with a fairy-land of lights at night. All of the lots are large ones, none having less than 100 feet footage. The prices are most reasonable, ranging from $4,000.00 to $12,000.00, with building restrictions from $5,000.00 to $10,000.00." The "Agents for the Owner" are Herbert L. Cornish and J.W. Wilkinson & Co. An uncommon real estate prospectus, unlisted in WorldCat, with condition issues noted. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

The brochure states: "Nowhere in this magnificent Southland, is it possible to find a homesite so desirably located - nestled in the finest residential foothills of Hollywood, adjoining Hollywoodland and Griffith Park, is beautiful Bronholly Park." Seventy-eight homesites are identified in the blueprint plat map; on the laid-in sheet they are listed from $950.00 to $4700.00. Dr. Carl Schultz is listed as the owner of the property.
