Photo Album - Large Format - Loening Arctic Amphibian Planes Used for the MacMillan Arctic Expedition

Alaska, 1925. Anacostia Naval Station, San Diego Naval Station, Alaska, 1925-1926. Album of large professional press photographs of the Loening Amphibian Planes used for the 1925 MacMillan Arctic Expedition, and also for the Alaskan Aerial Survey Expedition. Contains 23 photographs, some with embedded captions or photographer's stamp, mounted with corners onto black cardstock leaves. All large print format, photographs vary slightly in size, measuring from approximately 22 x 16,5 cm to approximately 25 x 20 cm. With a typescript note addressed to unidentified media personnel regarding appropriate attribution for the photographs. Oblong Folio album measuring approximately 37 x 28 cm, black paper boards. Boards bowed and chipped at extremities, otherwise in Very Good Condition, excellent photographs. Superb large photographs exhibit the unique features of the amphibious aircraft built by Loening Aeronautical Engineering Corporation of New York, while recording the first successful American aerial Arctic exploration, and the subsequent large scale survey which would dramatically augment Alaska's principle industries by applying aviation. 1925 MacMillan Arctic Expedition (12 Photographs) Led by Commander Donald Baxter MacMillan, who was accompanied by Richard E. Byrd, this joint expedition, sponsored by National Geographic, would prove to be the first productive use of aircraft in arctic regions by Americans, and would earn Byrd a leading reputation in polar aviation. The American made amphibian aircraft, however, is the focus of this album, the first being a view of the model OL-1 A-6879, taken by at the Anacostia Naval Station in D.C. on 14 May 1925 by Pacific and Atlantic Photographs Inc. of New York City (P & A Photo). Striking views of the airplane are captioned 9 May 1925, and after being tested at sea, two show images the aircraft being hoisted onto MacMillan's Polar steamship 'Peary' for the north bound voyage. This series concludes with the steamer Peary photographed in icy waters, appearing rather dwarfed alongside a sizeable wall of jagged ice. Donald MacMillan was a pioneer in experimenting with technology that would eventually change life in the Arctic for residents and visitors alike. A Donald B. MacMillan Collection can be found in the Bowdoin College Library Special Collections, Peary MacMillan Arctic Museum & Arctic Studies Center. 1926 Alaskan Aerial Survey Expedition (11 Photographs) Organized by the U.S. Navy, 112 navy men were assigned to the expedition under Captain Charles W. Call, to conduct a highly successful aerial survey of Southeast Alaska, which resulted in 10,000 miles of photographed territory, detailed meteorological recording, and subsequently, a notable increase in the use of aviation for various industries including forestry, mining and fishing. Three photographs illustrate final testing of type OL-3 serial numbers A-7055 and A-7061. Commemorating the departure of the aircraft for Alaska, two photographs are taken by Harry T. Bishop (1895-1963) at the San Diego Naval Station. Finally having arrived at Ketchikan, Alaska, on June 9th, prepared to explore unknown Arctic regions with aerial photographic charting and to test radio communications systems, images feature a flight crew having safely landed on a desolate rocky shore, as well as aerial views of the mountains and glaciers. The expedition had remained in Ketchikan for two months before proceeding on to Wrangell, and then to Juneau where it was based until September 10th. An exceptional and scarce visual chronicle of pioneering Arctic flight and aerial surveying. Donald Baxter MacMillan (1874-1970) made over 30 expeditions to the Arctic in his 46-year career. Explorer, sailor, teacher, philanthropist, researcher, and lecturer, he traveled over 300,000 miles charting new territory, training students, performing scientific research and studying and aiding the native people of Labrador and Greenland. He pioneered the use of radios, airplanes, and electricity in the Arctic, brought back films and thousands of photographs of Arctic scenes, and put together a dictionary of the Inuktikut language. He was considered by young and old "the most interesting of all speakers on Arctic or Antarctic subjects." In 1908, MacMillan had caught the attention of explorer and fellow Bowdoin graduate Robert E. Peary when he saved the lives of nine shipwrecked people in two nights. Peary subsequently invited MacMillan to join his 1908 journey to the North Pole. Although MacMillan himself had to turn back at 84°29' on March 14 because of frozen heels, Peary allegedly reached the Pole 26 days later. On 24 December 1918 MacMillan was commissioned an ensign in the Naval Reserve Flying Corps, and after the war, he began raising money for another Arctic expedition. In 1921, the schooner Bowdoin (named for MacMillan's alma mater) was launched from East Boothbay, Maine and set sail for Baffin Island. There MacMillan and his crew spent the winter. The expedition was notable for taking along an amateur radio operator, Don Mix, who used station WNP ("Wireless North Pole") to keep them in contact with the outside world. This was the first of many expeditions that would make Bowdoin a familiar name in Arctic communities. In 1923 concern was raised regarding a new ice age, and the National Geographical Society sponsored his voyage toward the North Pole aboard the schooner Bowdoin, in search of evidence of advancing glaciers. In 1925 he was commissioned as a lieutenant commander in the United States Naval Reserve Force. Thereafter, he was frequently referred to as "Commander MacMillan". The 1925 MacMillan Arctic Expedition was especially significant for the first productive use of aircraft in Arctic exploration by Americans. As a joint operation with civilian and military components, it was well publicized and reported, with daily progress reports reaching the American public by radio. The two vessels carried three amphibious airplanes, U.S. Navy personnel, and a radio set in order to test the feasibility of using both aircraft and radio communications in Arctic regions.. Very Good.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes; But Gentlemen Marry Brunettes

New York: Boni & Liverlight,, 1925 & 1928. Illustrated by Ralph Barton. 2 works, octavo. Original red cloth, spine and front board lettered in gilt; original black cloth-backed black and white patterned boards, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jackets. Housed in a red linen chemise and scarlet morocco slipcase. With a loosely inserted typescript letter. Black and white illustrations in the text. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes: Small bookplate to rear pastedown. Spine rolled, otherwise a superb copy in the bright jacket that has chip to front panel, and some nicks to spine ends. Gentlemen Marry Brunettes: Tips rubbed, small black stain to fore edge; an excellent copy. First editions, first printings, both presentation copies, the volumes inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To Carmel Myers, with all love and sympathy of a fellow brunette. Anita Loos. Dec. 30. 1925" and "To dearest Carmel—this vindication for we brunettes. Anita Loos." Carmel Myers (1900?-1980) was a silent film actress best remembered for her role in Ben Hur (1925). During the filming in Rome, she befriended Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald. After her screen career, she was an early television talk-show host, led a production company that packaged radio and television shows, held a patent for an electronic synchronizer that controlled studio lights, and imported and distributed French perfume. Each volume has the elegant hand coloured bookplate of Anita Loos to the front pastedown, printed on copper foil and featuring the striking design by Frank Walts of a woman's head in profile. A superb set, housed in a custom slipcase that is at least 60 years old, as evidenced by the accompanying letter from a bookseller in 1950.

        KNAVE OF HEARTS

      - (PARRISH,MAXFIELD)illus. KNAVE OF HEARTS by Louise Saunders. NY: Scribner 1925 (1925) folio, black cloth, pictorial paste-on, some rubbing to cover plate and cloth, VG+ in fine custom facsimile box. First edition of Parrish's masterwork. Illustrated with glorious pictorial endpapers plus really magnificent full page color illustrations (printed on rectos only) and numerous rich color illustrations in-text, all printed on thick, heavy coated paper. LAID IN IS A HANDWRITTEN LETTER FROM PARRISH TO HIS EDITOR, J.H. CHAPIN DISCUSSING HIS PROGRESS ON THE KNAVE. Written on both sides of a 3 1/2 x 5" card, dated January 26, 1922, Parrish writes to Chapin about his progress with the Knave, specifically his work on the double-page pictorial endpapers. "I have your note of the 23rd. The cover and one of the illustrations, very similar to the cover, are finished, and I am at work upon the cover lining. This one, as you know is to be a very grand affair and will take as much time almost as a big mural decoration, but its going to be very fine & elegant. By May I ought to have in your hands enough to make a respectable dummy. I disike in any way to exaggerate, but we seem to be undergoing a cold snap. 32 degrees below zero at this moment: 28 yesterday and 36 the day before. Our road has vanished in hard snow drifts and its a life of snowshoes now, as far as mail and provisions are concerned. Photographs come from my youngsters in Florida, out rowing in their shirt sleeves and lying around on the sand in bathing suits. Methinks we live in a big country. Sincerely: Maxfield Parrish". Its always a bonus when the content of a letter adds meaning to the development of a book. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

From the renowned collection of Estelle Doheny, with her neat leather book-plate on front paste-down.?"Au Royaume de la Perle was first published in Paris (by Payot) in 1919 without benefit of the Dulac illustrations which the author Mr. Rosenthal so eagerly sought. But when, in 1920, Dulac found time to produce 10 pictures, Mr. Rosenthal not only purchased the water colours, but had another publisher, Piazza of Paris, publish a 1,500-copy new edition of his ?'Perle?' book with the Dulac illustrations. Also Dulac reveals in a reply to a Mr. Carroll of Massachusetts who hoped to buy one of the ?'Pearl?' illustrations that Mr. Rosenthal also purchased the copyright to the 10 pictures. However Mr. Rosenthal did allow his book with Dulac pictures and in English translation to be published in England by The Nisbet Publishing House…The English edition, although praised by The Times Literary critic as Dulac ?'at his best?' and ?'fantastically Persian,?' was not a commercial success. In order to make use of the 775 sheets remaining from 1,550 printed for the English edition, arrangements were made in 1925 to market an edition through Brentano?'s, booksellers in New York…The ?'Pearl?' pictures indeed display a ripening of a Dulac style first seen in Sindbad the Sailor, employed in some of his Fairy Book pictures and developed fully in The Tanglewood Tales. It is a Persian miniature style, but made quite his own…His plates, truly genius, do much to bring a fanciful touch to the otherwise stark exposition of a treatise on pearls?" (Hughey).Hughey 54d.

Alarm

Verlag der Syndikalist, Berlin 1925 - 100 pp., small 8vo. Sewn signatures, bound in photo-illustrated wrappers. Dichter und Rebellen Band 1. Signed by the author on the title page, with an additional non-authorial gift inscription. Oversized wrappers worn, chipped, and torn at edges; binding tender in a few spots but intact, with a few page edges still uncut. Erich Mühsam — anarchist poet, essayist, playwright, cabaret performer, and activist — was arrested for the first time in 1918, for his antiwar agitation. Soon after being freed, he became integrally involved in the Bavarian Council Republic, a short-lived socialist state under the helm of Ernst Toller that declared independence from the Weimar Republic in April 1919. When the Weimar army crushed the Council Republic later that year, Mühsam's friend and mentor Gustav Landauer was killed, and Mühsam himself arrested again, and sentenced to fifteen years in prison, though he was freed by a general amnesty after serving five years. (Ironically, Hitler was released from prison in the same amnesty; Mühsam was an early and relentless critic and satirizer of the Nazis, and one of the first to be rounded up, within a few hours of the Reichstag fire, in February 1933. After seventeen months in a succession of concentration camps, he was murdered in Oranienburg on the night of July 9, 1934.) This stirring volume, a selection from twenty years of his writings, was published by a workers' press to celebrate his 1924 release (and to inaugurate a new series, Poets and Rebels, which was intended to feature Toller, John Henry Mackay, Landauer, Tolstoi, Gorky, Whitman, and others); it includes poetry and prose, and a selection of recent prison writings at the end. A scarce collection, especially so signed. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
