Mein Kampf Eine Abrechnung [Volume two: Die nationalsozialistische Bewegung]

Munich Franz Eher,, 1925-27. Octavo. Original white cloth and red boards (volume one) and original red cloth (volume two), spines and front covers lettered in red and white. Preserved in a custom made red morocco slip case and chemise. Frontispiece photographic portrait of Hitler to volume one. Ownership inscription of Emil Garraux dated August 1925 to front free endpaper of volume one, with his very occasional pencil side ruling and marginal notes in the text and to the rear endpapers. Corners of volume two a little bruised. Cover of volume two with an ink mark. Paper stock lightly toned, gathering 21 in volume one bound in twice; a very good copy. First edition, published in an edition of 10,000 copies on July 18, 1925. The importance of Mein Kampf cannot be understated. Not only was it the origin and strength of the National-Socialist programme transforming Hitler's status from a seedy local agitator to a potential national saviour in process, but more importantly caused a major turning point in the twentieth century by setting the seeds for the most destructive war ever fought. Almost forty when he started writing it, Hitler had achieved almost nothing, but the book constituted a turning point in his career. "Political creeds as the basis for new religions have usually spelt danger for humanity. When they are distilled from the half-baked prejudices harboured by the more reactionary section of a nation not particularly noted for political enlightenment, they spell disaster." (PMM). In November 1923, Hitler was arrested after an unsuccessful Nazi putsch in Berlin. When he said, later, that this defeat was the greatest stroke of luck he ever had, he meant that without it he couldn't have made himself into a popular hero. The trial became a social event, with photographers waiting outside the courtroom. For high treason he couldn't have been given a lower sentence - five years of imprisonment, with the possibility of parole after the first six months. As a prisoner in the Landesberg Fortress, he was given preferential treatment. It was here that he dictated the first volume of Mein Kampf to his associate Rudolf Hess. Just before Christmas 1924, he was released after serving only nine months of his sentence. The first volume sets out his highly tendentious opinions about the world he grew up in, and about the 1914-18 war. It presents his justification for territorial acquisitiveness - Germany needs more Lebensraum - and airs his anti-Semitism. "Although it contained much that was shocking to many Germans, its main sentiments were widely shared in central Europe. A pseudo-mystic racial theory, totally unrelated to fact, was made to support pan-Germanism, anti-Semitism, militarism and ultra-nationalism, the combination of which was to be implemented by the unrestricted use of power as interpreted through the mentality of a superstitious bully" (PMM). Entitled "The National Socialist Movement", volume two (1927) contains most of the ideas later fleshed out in his policies. "This programme, with a detailed account of what it would entail nationally and internationally, is stated with complete frankness in the two volumes of Mein Kampf. The brazenness of the declaration was due to naivety and immaturity. Unfortunately Europe was governed by small men at the time and when Hitler came to power in 1933 he found that his wildest claims and most extravagant actions earned but mild and ineffectual rebuke. His enemies accepted the occupation of the Rhineland, the tearing-up of the Versailles and Locarno Treaties, the abandonment of the League of Nations and the seizure of Austria and Czechoslovakia. Hitler had a right to be surprised at their violent reaction to the attack on Poland. It was all in Mein Kampf, but they just could not believe it" (PMM). Provenance: Emil Garraux (1854-1951) was a Swiss member of the Verein für die Deutsche Sprache and co-author of Deutsches Namenbüchlein für die Westschweiz.

Land Book of the Borough of Manhattan, City of New York. Desk and Library Edition. 1925.

New York: G. W. Bromley & Co., 1925. 1925 edition. VERY GOOD+. Pages are near fine; lightly toned along the outside margins but are otherwise clean and unmarked, the colors clear and bright. Two leaves have short closed tears at bottom edge, but otherwise pages are in exceptionally fine quality. Black cloth hardcover, red stamped title on front, is clean, moderately rubbed along edges and hinges. Cloth is frayed at spine ends, corners and several spots on the outside edges. Binding intact though loose, the hinges wobbly. All pages are firmly held. The book should stand gentle use for some time but would benefit from a professional binding reinforcement. An extraordinarily detailed record of Manhattan in a series of 191 maps clearly showing the streets and outlines of each and every structure, every park, every railroad track including elevated railroads, water and sewer pipes and even fire hydrants, from Battery Park to 228th Street. Even more miraculously, details about the buildings are supplied through ingenious keys. Clearly noted are the number of stories, the depth of the building, presence of basements, of storefronts, and elevators. Even structure (brick, frame or iron covered) is indicated by coloring. Each of the plates has been meticulously hand-tinted in pinks, blues, yellows - and greens if a park is present. To help the user navigate the maps a 1-page Block Index (printed on the front pasted endpaper), 4-page Street Index and 5-Page Map Index (which include the "Explanations" or keys) are provided at the front of the book. The 191 plates follow. Book measures 16-3/4 x 11-3/4". An unusually well-preserved copy of this scarce, very desirable work. Additional photos available on request.. Hard Cover. Very Good/Not Issued. Folio.

The Review of English Studies, A Quarterly Journal of English Literature and the English Language. Edited by R. B. McKerrow, Litt.D. Vol. 1.-No. 3. July 1925 The Devils Coach-Horses By J.R.R. Tolkien. From Wikipedia, The Devil's Coach Horses is a 1925 essay by J. R. R. Tolkien ("Devil's coach-horse" is a British expression for a particular kind of rove beetle). Tolkien draws attention to the devil's steeds called eaueres in Hali Meidhad, translated "boar" in the Early English Text Society edition of 1922, but in reference to the jumenta "yoked team, draught horse" of Joel (Joel 1:17), in the Vulgata Clementina computruerunt jumenta in stercore suo, (the Nova Vulgata has semina for Hebrew ???? "grain"). Rather than from the Old English word for "boar", eofor (German Eber) Tolkien derives the word from eafor "packhorse", from a verb aferian "transport", related to Middle English aver "draught-horse", a word surviving in northern dialects. The Proto-Germanic root *ab- "energy, vigour, labour" of the word is cognate to Latin opus. This lovely volume is very well preserved in Very Good Plus condition, showing some edgewear consisting of a minor chip with some loss, a couple of closed tears, and folding along the bottom edges of the original wrappers. The text block shows very little browning to the pages, no foxing, no names or markings, nice and clean. Best known for his voluptuous erotic images, he has been called “the painter of feminine sensuality” (Slatkine, Livres Illustrés 1900-1930). Chimot reached his artistic height during the 1920s and early 30s. He had become a significant figure in the Paris art world, with a public “hungry for his late-Symbolist nudes, ‘soumises à leurs passions mortelles et délicieuses” (André Warnod). Fine condition, with only a few minor white spots to margin (not affecting image). [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        The Notorious Sophie Lang.

London: William Heinemann Ltd.,, 1925. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine gilt, with the pictorial dust jacket. Spotting to the edges but a excellent copy in the chipped and somewhat creased dust jacket, tanned at the spine and generally a little grubby. First edition, first impression. This first of the author's three novels filmed in 1936. Sophie Lang was a jewel thief who featured in several books and a trio of picaresque movies. Of these the first - based on the present title - is by far the most successful. Despite the success of Anderson's works this title was not published America and must have had a scant print run in the UK since copies in any condition are seldom encountered and examples in the dust jacket are of the utmost scarcity.

        The Great Gatsby

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1925 - First edition, first printing. Publisher's dark blue-green cloth, front board lettering stamped in blind, spine lettering stamped in gilt. About near fine, with some faint toning and a slight lean to the spine, light wear to the spine ends, spine lightly starting at the half-title, faint toning to the otherwise clean pages. A very attractive copy. Bruccoli A11. While it has since been regarded as masterful piece of classic literature, The Great Gatsby did not gain popularity until after the author's death in 1940. The novel tells the story of the star-crossed lovers Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan against the backdrop of wealthy and materialistic West Egg, Long Island, during the Prohibition Era. Although Fitzgerald meant the text to be critical of the 1920's social climate, today The Great Gatsby is beloved for its vivid descriptions of extravagant parties, palatial homes, and eccentric characters that are emblematic of the Jazz Age. The text remains extremely popular today and is widely taught in schools across the United States. The first edition was printed in a run of 20,870 copies; today, Scribner's sells almost 25 times as many copies per year as printed books and e-books. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Autograph manuscript (fragment).

      N. p., [c. 1925]. - Large 8vo. 12 pp (numbered 29 to 40). A large portion of her essay "Composition as Explanation", published in 1925. "And so there was the natural phenomena that was war, which had been, before war came, several generations behind the contemporary composition, because it became war and so completely needed to be contemporary became completely contemporary and so created the completed recognition of the contemporary composition. Every one but one may say every one became consciously became aware of the existence of the authenticity of the modern composition. This then the contemporary recognition, because of the academic thing known as war having been forced to become contemporary made every one not only contemporary in act not only contemporary in thought but contemporary in self-consciousness made every one contemporary with the modern composition. And so the art creation of the contemporary composition which would have been outlawed normally outlawed several generations more behind even than war, war having been brought so to speak up to date art so to speak was allowed not completely to be up to date, but nearly up to date, in other words we who created the expression of the modem composition were to be recognized before we were dead some of us even quite a long time before we were dead. And so war may be said to have advanced a general recognition of the expression of the contemporary composition by almost thirty years". - In her essay, Stein connects World War I’s influence on the evolution of warfare (and the shifting consciousness of the citizens and soldiers of those nations involved) to the role of Modernism in the evolution of the arts. - Slightly browned; in pencil.
