L'Espagne et La Révolution Française : Un Juicio Sujeto a Revision : Menendez Pelayo y Los Caballeritos De Azcoitia / Un Problema Historico : La Heterodoxia De Los Caballeros Vascos / Don Vicente Maria Santivanez, Un Madrileno En La Revolucion Francesa.

PHOTOS NUMERIQUES DISPONIBLES PAR EMAIL SUR SIMPLE DEMANDE-DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPS MAY BE AVAILABLE ON REQUEST. 18 x 24

Offprint of all four papers and first edition of the final essay, constituting Einstein's attempt toward creating a unified field theory: "a new theory of space with a view to unification of all forms of activity that fall within the sphere of physics, giving them a common explanation" (PMM416). The task of unifying nuclear, electromagnetic, and gravitational force is nowadays by many considered the holy grail of theoretical physics.Maxwell was the first to develop such a theory when he described the forces of electricity and magnetism as the single force electromagnetism. After Einstein had completed his general theory of relativity (a field theory for gravitation), he turned his attention towards generalizing his theory even further to include Maxwell's theory. Even though Einstein never succeeded in completing this task, in the way that he finished his earlier theories, he pioneered and explored many areas of this subject. "It had been repeatedly observed that Einstein's general theory of relativity necessitated a pluralistic explanation of the universe. In 1925 he announced that he had resolved this difficulty but the announcement was premature. In 1928 he attacked the problem once more, only to find that Riemann's conception of space, on which the general theory was based, would not permit of a common explanation of electromagnetic and gravitational phenomena. In a series of papers [the present] devoted to the development of 'A Uniform Theory of Gravitation and Electricity' he outlined a new theory of space with a view to unification of all forms of activity that fall within the sphere of physics, giving them a common explanation. All that would then remain to complete a scientific unison is the correlation of the organic and inorganic".PMM 416Barchas 586

Die Erreichbarkeit der Himmelskörper. Untersuchung über das Raumfahrtproblem.

Verlag von R. Oldenbourg, Munich & Berlin 1925 - 4to (254 x 179 mm). iv, [2], 88 pp. including 28 illustrations in text. Original publisher's dark-blue pictorial wrappers (slight chipping to edges and lower spine, short closed tears, creases, light browning to margins, pencil marking to upper blank margin of front wrapper). Text untrimmed and partially unopened, light age-toning. ---- Interlibrum, Cat. 270; Ciancone 98; Hübner 696. - FIRST EDITION, first issue of an important early work on the feasibility of space flight with calculations of required rocket propulsion and trajectories. "Hohmann was the first to work out the fuel requirements for a number of interplanetary trips restricting himself to a mathematical investigation of the quantities of a given or assumed fuel required for an assumed operation" (Interlibrum). The work is rare. Only 1500 copies were printed and this is one of the few copies with the original pictorial blue wrappers. "One of the most important publications, following close on the heels of Oberth's book, was a volume of similar external appearance, written in a similar manner. As a matter of fact, it looked so forbidding to prospective buyers who leafed through it in the book-stores that the first edition . was never completely sold and remained after the second world war with a new wrapper bearing the printed title only on the front cover. It soon became a much searched rarity" (Interlibrum). [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF 116 PROFESSIONAL IMAGES, MOSTLY FROM MIE-KEN, CIRCA 1895-1925, DURING THE MEIJI AND TAISHO PERIODS

1925 - Oblong, string-tied album of black cardstock leaves, 11" x 13", photographs mounted on 35pp, blanks at the rear. Bound in black, flexible boards with an embossed sailing ship and gilt lettering (Photo-Album) on the cover. Pasted in are 116 albumen and silver gelatin prints, ranging from small candids to 8 ½" x 10 ½" group portraits, a few fading, overall sharp and clean. Laid into the album are a Japanese news article, a small head-shot of an older gentleman, and a watercolor portrait (10" x 8 ¼") of a man's face. Most of the photographs in this album. circa 1895-1925, were taken in Mie-Ken (or "Mie prefecture"), part of the Kansai region on the main island of Honshu. The group and individual portraits reflect new social and economic developments and cultural norms that emerged during this period. Subjects are shown in either traditional Japanese garments or in Western dress. Group shots often depict people wearing both styles within the same picture. There are many group shots of schoolchildren of both sexes, young people in uniforms posed before buildings with Japanese signs on them, as well as many formal group shots of families, some "nuclear"-husband, wife, children- others extended by relatives. Individual shots of young children show them almost invariably in western dress, one posed with his tricycle, young boys in uniform, a young girl in kimono showing a dance move while holding a fan, infants in traditional robes, and young men in business suits. Several birdseye views feature very large groups of rural people in traditional dress, posed outdoors. Among the most striking photographs are: one (8 ½" x 10 ½") showing 11 doctors/ medical students posed around two corpses (one smiling happily) being dissected on two tables; four women and one man posed around a table doing handwork (weaving, tatting?); men in western dress, "strap-holding" inside a streetcar; and 5 actors (2 male, 3 female) on stage in costume. ~~ The Meiji period (1868-1912) saw the restoration of the Emperor (this time with a centralized bureaucracy behind him) after years of shogun rule. Japan was under heavy influence from Western political, economic, and educational models, and the country became more capitalist, industrial, and progressively democratic, offering free education to youngsters of both genders. Transportation and communications systems were modernized, the feudal lords and samurai lost their power, and a powerful national army and navy were created. By the early 1870s, the government declared all classes of people to be equal. The Taishu period (1912-26) saw the continued influence of Western culture, and values such as efficiency and individualism continued to replace more traditional ones. Japanese participation on the world stage continued to grow as the nation co-founded the League of Nations and emerged on the winning side in WWI. By 1925, there was universal male suffrage in Japan. Corruption in government increased, however, and the West began to form negative views of this newly-powerful, non-white nation, exacerbated by Japan's poor treatment of China.
