        The New Yorker -- February 21, 1925 (Issue #1)

New York: The F-R Pub. Corp, 1925. Original wraps. Very Good. The uncommon February 21, 1925 maiden issue of "The New Yorker", with the dandy Eustace Tilley (created by Rea Irvin) gracing the iconic original cover. This copy has held up nicely -- fragile to be sure but still very solid and with a strong binding. There's very light creasing and wear to the panels and along the lower page edges but the colors remain vibrant and the magazine is crisp and well-preserved, easily meriting a grading of VG. Incredibly, "The Talk of the Town" is prominently featured, even in this inaugural issue, and the illustrations (by the likes of Miguel Covarrubias, Ralph Barton and Herb Roth) set a very important tone and play a key supplementary role. And the wonderful local ads at the rear even feature --remarkably-- a number of small, independent bookshops. The Advisory Editors (as stated on the first page) are made up of: Ralph Barton, Marc Connelly, Rea Irvin, George S. Kaufman, Alice Duer Miller, Dorothy Parker and Alexander Woollcott.

        BUMBLEBEE

New Preston, CT: Bernhardt Wall, 1925. Limited Edition, number 28 of 100 copies. Hard Cover. Octavo. Bernhardt Wall. 18 leaves; 16 calligraphic and pictorial etchings plus an etched label tipped in behind the front free endpaper noting that the book has been ?Etched, Printed, Bound, by Berhardt Wall, personally.? Second state with additional etching behind the dedication page so noting the state and the assurances that this book is not glorifying ?grog? despite the over-indulgence by the bees on nectar. Wall goes so far as to suggest that ?the bee government might well follow humans and institute an 18th amendment.? A fantastic playful production for the prohibition era! Bound as issued in cloth backed boards and decorative endpapers; the usual awkward book construction as Wall was most certainly a better engraver and printer than bookbinder; light foxing throughout; previous owner name on a preliminary blank. Uncommon. ?Following Berhardt Wall,? p. 36. Signed by Wall on the limitation page.

Mir'at al Haramain aw al rihlat ul Hijaziyya wa l Hajj wa masha'iruhu ad Diniyya (View of the tow holy sanctuaries, or travels in Hejaz and the Hajj and it's religious ceremonies)

Cairo: Dar ul Kutub al- Misriyya, the National library press, 1925 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Arabic text in 2 volumes set with 365 fine photographic plates, documents (captioned in English), maps and plans (some foldings). 514, (index), 395 p with 30 P of biography of the author. First original edition in Dar ul Kutub al Misriyya. In very good condition, in contemporary binding. The author was an Egyptian Major-General, who completed the pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina four times: in 1901 as commander of the military escort of the Egyptian pilgrims and in 1903, 1904 and 1908 in the high office of Commander of the Pilgrimage (Amir al-Hajj). In this position he not only had the opportunity to assist at all the ceremonies of the holy month but also of acquiring an intimate knowledge of the administrative side of the pilgrimage and of the Arabian and Turkish politics in the Hijaz. At the same time he was able to take a great many photographs and to illustrate his book with numerous photographs and plans. For a simple pilgrim the taking of photographs would have been a very dangerous undertaking especially during the ceremonies of the holy month of Dhul Hijja. Sothebys note, from: Max Meyerhof, Review of the Mir'at al-Haramain by Rif'at Pasha in Isis, vol.9, no.1, Feb., 1927, pp.130-133..

Photograph Album Documenting the U. S. Marine Corps Occupation of Haiti

Haiti, 1925. Photograph Album. Very good. Almost 300 photographs on about 40 leaves contained in a 10" x 13" album. The photographs range in size from 1.5" x 4.5" to 6.5" x 8.5". About 215 of the photographs document Private Kraemer's duty in Haiti with the 2nd Marine Regiment between 1923 and 1925. The remainder of the images are of family and friends. The photographs have been attached with album corners; several have been reattached with tape. Almost all of the Haiti photographs are captioned in white ink. The photographs and album pages are in nice shape. The album is sound, but has six holes on the front cover where medallions have been removed. An old auction photo shows that one was for the Gendarmerie d'Haiti, a notorious collaborationist police force that was led by Americans on temporary leaves of absence from the Marine Corps. The other was likely a Marine Corps "Eagle, Globe, and Anchor." Several photographs have been removed and a clipped image of the Marine Detachment from the U.S.S. Rochester has been crudely taped to the first page. Kraemer's name is inside the front cover. This collection of photographs shows Haitians, Citadel Laferriere, Port au Prince, Cape Haitian, towns and villages, the countryside, views of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, victims of shark attacks, a man with elephantiasis, and most importantly the country's occupation by the U. S. Marine Corps. The photographs include Marine Corps and Gendarmerie buildings and marines parading, shooting at the rifle range, relaxing, swimming, playing baseball, and competing in a track and field meet. Several photos show identified U.S. Navy ships at anchor. Of special interest are images of the Commandant, Major General LeJeune and the Haitian High Commissioner John Russell (a Marine Corps Brigadier General). Kraemer apparently was friends with some of the marines assigned to Marine Corps Fourth Air Squadron as a number of the photographs show aircraft (JN-4 landplanes, an HS-2 seaplane, plane crashes, planes lined up for inspection, etc.) as well as birds-eye views of the country. The highlight of the album is a group of three images showing one of the Marine Corps DH-4B airplanes that set a then-new-long-distance record of 12,500 miles in late 1923, flying to San Francisco and back. Sergeant Peter P. Tolusciak, the plane's co-pilot who would later die in a fiery crash, is shown in two of the photographs.

[An Archive of Scranton Lace Company Sample Images]

(Scranton, PA), (ca. 1925). 675+ gelatin silver photographs measuring 3.25? x 4? approx. depicting lace samples against a black background, item numbers pinned to lace. Some curling, else generally fine. Plus 140+ lace sample cyanotypes, measuring 4.75? x 3? approx. Generally very good. Plus 31 additional images in black-and-white: eight 15? x 12? approx., others various smaller sizes. With: faux-leather album measuring 13? x 11? approx. and titled ?THE SCRANTON LACE COMPANY / Corner Glenn Street and Meylert Avenue? on paper label to front cover. Interior marked ?curtains/table coverings book no. 3.? Contains 273 images of various sizes, cyanotype and gelatin silver mounted on black paper, some captioned with names of product lines. Plus: two invoices for yarn and other textiles. Joints and edges worn, several pages detached. Contents generally fine. A sizable archive of over 1,150 images from the Scranton Lace Company, a major manufacturer that operated from 1890 to 2002, consisting of samples used in home decor ? primarily window treatments and table linens -? likely photographed for internal purposes. Composed mainly of product sample photographs, including images of intricate lace patterns against a dark background and with inventory numbers pinned to the sample. Several enlargements of full table cloths and settings also included, with those mounted in the album cut ? with striking effect ? to create the illusion of a three-dimensional perspective. More than 200 of the images are cyanotypes, which are notoriously fugitive to light and are here uncommonly well-preserved.  The company was a leading producer of decorative lace throughout the 1900s. Notably, the invoices and marginalia indicate at least some of these styles were made from Rayon, which had only debuted commercially in the U.S. in 1924. Also noteworthy, firm designer Hugh Rodham (likely responsible for many of the patterns pictured here) is the grandfather of Hillary Clinton. The bulk of the company?s extant archives are held by two regional museums: Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage and The Waverly Community House. A comprehensive representation of period lace styles, ranging from traditional to contemporary and art-deco patterns, all rendered in exquisite detail. We will note for purely self-serving reasons that two small lots of about 50 photos ? both of a similar nature and from the same company ? made more than $1000 each at the 2015 Swann vernacular photo auction.

        Uhlands poetische Werke, herausgegeben von Raimund Pissin. Band 1: Gedichte / Band 2: Dramen * G A N Z L E D E R - L U X U S A U S G A B E in 2 Bänden

Principles and Methods of Plant Breeding with Special Reference to Horticultural Crops.

CORNELL UNIVERSITY 1925 - 4to (25.3 x 18.5 cm. Half leather and cloth boards. Collation: [5] ,238 leaves + numerous photographs mounted on stiff gray cardboard and an original watercolor of a potato by Bowers. The binding is in good condition with minimal wear to ends of spine and corners. Title in gilt on front board. Bowers begins the thesis with is a review of the literature for plant breeding from beginning to end of 19th century and the principle plant breeders. He then describes genetic basis for breeding as well as different aspects of making crosses and pollination. The main body of his research is presented for the different plants and methods he used in creating different varieties. Bowers' signature is on front end paper. Bowers was well known for his publications on rhododendrons. In this masters thesis he presents his research on plant breeding at Cornell which awarded him the degree. This is a significant work because it comes at the time just after Bateson in England and others discovered the importance of the genetic work of Mendel using crosses of garden grown peas. Bowers' research was aimed at discovering what breeding principles were successful in generating new useful crop varieties. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        XX Poemas

Mexico : Talleres Graficos de la Nacion, 1925. 29pp - Mexico : Talleres Graficos de la Nacion, 1925. 29pp. An unusual Mexican character, often outrageously demonstrative in his homoseuxality, he was fond of outrageous wigs. The author's first publication, One of 200 copies. Salvador Novo López (1904 -1974) was a Mexican writer, poet, playwright, translator, television presenter, entrepreneur, and the official chronicler of Mexico City. As a noted intellectual, he influenced popular perceptions of politics, media, the arts, and Mexican society in general. He was a member of Los Contemporáneos, a group of Mexican writers, as well as of the Mexican Academy of the Language. Novo defied the machismo and conservative Catholicism prevalent in 20th century Mexican culture by making almost no efforts to conceal his sexuality.[1] He was, however, accepted by the Mexican government. He held official posts related to culture, was elected to the Mexican Language Academy, and had a television program on Mexico City's history. Towards the end of his life, he dyed his hair a bright carrot color and wore many ostentatious rings and colored suits. He has been compared to Oscar Wilde, but unlike Wilde, Novo never suffered the setback of scandal or persecution and remained an accepted and respected member of society and governmental circles until his death. In fact, some sectors resented the fact that a gay writer would align himself so closely with the government and media after the repression of social movements in the 1960s and 1970s.Salvador Novo was a provocative and prolific cultural presence in Mexico City through much of the twentieth century. With his friend and fellow poet Xavier Villaurrutia, he cofounded Ulises and Contemporáneos, landmark avant-garde journals of the late 1920s and 1930s. At once "outsider" and "insider," Novo held high posts at the Ministries of Culture and Public Education and wrote volumes about Mexican history, politics, literature, and culture. The author of numerous collections of poems, including XX poemas, Nuevo amor, Espejo, Dueño mío, and Poesía 1915-1955, Novo is also considered one of the finest, most original prose stylists of his generation.         Mrs Dalloway

London: Published by Leonard and Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press, 1925 First edition, first printing. One of 2,000 copies. Publisher's deep rust cloth, lettered in gilt. About near fine, with a touch of sunning to the spine, bright gilt, light rubbing to the edges, some light spotting to the page edges and scattered throughout the text block, otherwise fresh pages. A very handsome copy. Kirkpatrick A9a, Woolmer 82. One of the author's best known novels, Mrs. Dalloway tells the story of Clarissa Dalloway as she prepares to host a high-society party. The text is a compilation of two of Woolf's short stories "Mrs. Dalloway in Bond Street" and "The Prime Minister." A stream of consciousness narrative, Mrs. Dalloway follows the protagonist from her decision to "buy the flowers herself" at the start of the day through the completion of her party in the evening. Throughout the novel, Woolf explores the impact of mental illness on daily life, both in Mrs. Dalloway, who reveals that she is being treated for depression, and a second leading character, Septimus Warren Smith, a WWI veteran suffering from PTSD who chooses to commit suicide rather than face involuntary commitment to a psychiatric hospital. Like many of Woolf's novels, the text is centered on philosophy and perception rather than action sequences and dialogue; John W. Crawford agrees in his New York Times Review that "One day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway? is the complete story of Mrs. Woolf's new novel, yet she contrives to enmesh all the inflections of Mrs. Dalloway's personality, and many of the implications of modern civilization, in the account of those twenty-four hours.". 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

Mappe, 1929.
