The Life and Strange Suprising Adventures Of Robinson Crusoe; The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe; Serious Reflections During the Life and Suprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe

London - Constable & Company 1925 - A limited edition offacsimiles of the original first editions of the Robinson Crusoe, from the Selbourne collection. The first Robinson Crusoe storywas originally published anonymously in 1719as the memoir of its protagonist, leading many to believe that it was a true chronicle. It tells the story of a castaway who spends thirty years on a tropical island, encountering cannibals, mutineers, and other perils. The two subsequent works continue his adventures, and were written following the first work's astonishing success. The Robinson Crusoe stories taken as a whole are one of the most popular fictional works in Western literature. By the end of the nineteenth century no book had more editions, spin-offs, or translations. There are estimated to have been more than 700 alternative verisions, including those for children. This edition was printed verbatim fromcopies of the first editions. The illustrations in the first two volumes (Adventures & Further Adventures)are by Stothard and are taken from the popular edition of 1790, again printed in facsimile. The title page from that edition is included in those two volumes. This edition was limited to 750 copies. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. Collated: completeCondition: In a cloth binding with gilt detailing and lettering to the spines. Externally very smart indeed, with just very light shelf wear and bumping to the extremities. The edges are untrimmed and as a result a little dusty. Otherwise, however, generally clean and bright throughout and firmly bound. Overall: FINE [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

This book was produced in three editions, each with different limitations and features. The present edition, which is the largest, has an original sketch of two text illustrations by the artist and a set of 65 plates reproducing all of the images in the book. Hemard, a prolific artist, illustrator, designer and author, is best-known for his humorously illustrated editions of serious non-fiction books. Sir Frederick Pollock [1845-1937] was one of the greatest British judges and legal scholars of his day. His treatises on contracts, jurisprudence the common law and other subjects did much to clarify and systematize English law. Several of these were standard texts that went through several editions. He is also remembered for his collaboration with F.W. Maitland on The History of English Law Before the Time of Edward I and his correspondence with Oliver Wendell Holmes, which was published posthumously as The Holmes-Pollock Letters.

Al Naqd wa al Bayan fi daf' awham Khuzairan (Critique and declaration of Khuzayran's illusions) The only work by the authors, Signed copy.

Damascus: al- Tarakki press, 1925 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Arabic text on the behavior during funerals in Islam in 140 p. Title page with dedication signed by Muhammad Kamil al qassab to Ali Surour al Zankalouni (one of the concerned Ulema in this declaration and one of the scholars in al Azhar University). Modern fine hard cover binding. The book is the only work by the tow Sheikhs, al Qassam and al Qassab during their deport life in Haifa in Palestine. The book is a critique of tow mufti's legal openion in Haifa regarding the behavior during funerals in Islam. Sheikh Muhammad Iz ad-Din al Qassam was a controversial Arab militant in the British Mandate of Palestine. He was was born in Jableh, Syria, in the northern Latakia Governorate, son of a teacher and adherent of the Qadari Sufi order. He was educated at al-Azhar University. Upon his return he became a teacher and an imam at the local mosque. After Italy's 1911 invasion of Libya, al-Qassam declared a Jihad and collected funds for Libyan resistance, as well as composing a victory anthem. He enlisted dozens of volunteers and set out for Libya, but was detained and ordered home by the Ottoman authorities. He enlisted in the Ottoman army when World War I broke out where he received military training and was attached as a chaplain to a base near Damascus. Returning home before the war's end, al-Qassam organised a local defence force to fight the French, but French-incited internecine infighting led him and several of his followers to head into the mountains to prepare for a guerilla offensive. Al-Qassam was a key figure in the 1921 Syrian revolt against the French when Faisal I declared his kingdom of Greater Syria in Damascus and was sentenced to death after its failure. After the French besieged the city, he fled via Beirut to Haifa, then under the British Mandate, where his wife and daughters later joined him. Already in his forties, he concentrated his activities on the lower classes, setting up a night school for casual labourers and preaching to them as imam in the Istiqlal mosque, and he would seek them out on the streets and even in brothels and hashish dens. His greatest following came from the landless ex-tenant farmers drifting in to Haifa from the Upper Galilee where purchases of agricultural land by the Jewish National Fund and labour policies excluding Arabs had dispossessed many of their traditional livelihoods. He was also a prominent member of the Young Men's Muslim Association. Associated with the Istiqlal party (Independence Party), his activities were financed by several well-off businessmen due to his spreading reputation. In 1929 he was appointed the marriage registrar in Mufti Amin al-Husayni's Supreme Muslim Council Sharia court in Haifa, a role that allowed him to tour the northern villages, whose inhabitants he encouraged to set up agricultural cooperatives. In November 1935, fearing arrest after a British constable had been killed in a skirmish with some of his followers, al-Qassam and twelve of his men left Haifa to hide out in the hills between Jenin and Nablus, spending ten days on the move, during which they were fed by local villagers. When two of his men engaged in a firefight with a Palestine police patrol hunting fruit thieves in which a Jewish policeman was killed, British police launched a manhunt and surrounded al-Qassam in a cave near Ya'bad. In the ensuing battle, al-Qassam was killed. The manner of his last stand assumed legendary proportions in Palestinian circles at the time: 'Surrounded he told his men to die as martyrs, and opened fire. His defiance and manner of his death (which stunned the traditional leadership) electrified the Palestinian people. Thousands forced their way past police lines at the funeral in Haifa, and the secular Arab nationalist parties invoked his memory as the symbol of resistance. (Wikipedia). For the biography of M. Kamil al Qassab, see: James L. Gelvin p. 91 and later: Nationalism and mass politics in Syria at the close of empire..

        The New Yorker -- February 21, 1925 (Issue #1)

New York: The F-R Pub. Corp, 1925. Original wraps. Very Good. The uncommon February 21, 1925 maiden issue of "The New Yorker", with the dandy Eustace Tilley (created by Rea Irvin) gracing the iconic original cover. This copy has held up nicely -- fragile to be sure but still very solid and with a strong binding. There's very light creasing and wear to the panels and along the lower page edges but the colors remain vibrant and the magazine is crisp and well-preserved, easily meriting a grading of VG. Incredibly, "The Talk of the Town" is prominently featured, even in this inaugural issue, and the illustrations (by the likes of Miguel Covarrubias, Ralph Barton and Herb Roth) set a very important tone and play a key supplementary role. And the wonderful local ads at the rear even feature --remarkably-- a number of small, independent bookshops. The Advisory Editors (as stated on the first page) are made up of: Ralph Barton, Marc Connelly, Rea Irvin, George S. Kaufman, Alice Duer Miller, Dorothy Parker and Alexander Woollcott.

        BUMBLEBEE

New Preston, CT: Bernhardt Wall, 1925. Limited Edition, number 28 of 100 copies. Hard Cover. Octavo. Bernhardt Wall. 18 leaves; 16 calligraphic and pictorial etchings plus an etched label tipped in behind the front free endpaper noting that the book has been ?Etched, Printed, Bound, by Berhardt Wall, personally.? Second state with additional etching behind the dedication page so noting the state and the assurances that this book is not glorifying ?grog? despite the over-indulgence by the bees on nectar. Wall goes so far as to suggest that ?the bee government might well follow humans and institute an 18th amendment.? A fantastic playful production for the prohibition era! Bound as issued in cloth backed boards and decorative endpapers; the usual awkward book construction as Wall was most certainly a better engraver and printer than bookbinder; light foxing throughout; previous owner name on a preliminary blank. Uncommon. ?Following Berhardt Wall,? p. 36. Signed by Wall on the limitation page.

Mir'at al Haramain aw al rihlat ul Hijaziyya wa l Hajj wa masha'iruhu ad Diniyya (View of the tow holy sanctuaries, or travels in Hejaz and the Hajj and it's religious ceremonies)

Cairo: Dar ul Kutub al- Misriyya, the National library press, 1925 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Arabic text in 2 volumes set with 365 fine photographic plates, documents (captioned in English), maps and plans (some foldings). 514, (index), 395 p with 30 P of biography of the author. First original edition in Dar ul Kutub al Misriyya. In very good condition, in contemporary binding. The author was an Egyptian Major-General, who completed the pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina four times: in 1901 as commander of the military escort of the Egyptian pilgrims and in 1903, 1904 and 1908 in the high office of Commander of the Pilgrimage (Amir al-Hajj). In this position he not only had the opportunity to assist at all the ceremonies of the holy month but also of acquiring an intimate knowledge of the administrative side of the pilgrimage and of the Arabian and Turkish politics in the Hijaz. At the same time he was able to take a great many photographs and to illustrate his book with numerous photographs and plans. For a simple pilgrim the taking of photographs would have been a very dangerous undertaking especially during the ceremonies of the holy month of Dhul Hijja.         Photograph Album Documenting the U. S. Marine Corps Occupation of Haiti

Haiti, 1925. Photograph Album. Very good. Almost 300 photographs on about 40 leaves contained in a 10" x 13" album. The photographs range in size from 1.5" x 4.5" to 6.5" x 8.5". About 215 of the photographs document Private Kraemer's duty in Haiti with the 2nd Marine Regiment between 1923 and 1925. The remainder of the images are of family and friends. The photographs have been attached with album corners; several have been reattached with tape. Almost all of the Haiti photographs are captioned in white ink. The photographs and album pages are in nice shape. The album is sound, but has six holes on the front cover where medallions have been removed. An old auction photo shows that one was for the Gendarmerie d'Haiti, a notorious collaborationist police force that was led by Americans on temporary leaves of absence from the Marine Corps. The other was likely a Marine Corps "Eagle, Globe, and Anchor." Several photographs have been removed and a clipped image of the Marine Detachment from the U.S.S. Rochester has been crudely taped to the first page. Kraemer's name is inside the front cover. This collection of photographs shows Haitians, Citadel Laferriere, Port au Prince, Cape Haitian, towns and villages, the countryside, views of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, victims of shark attacks, a man with elephantiasis, and most importantly the country's occupation by the U. S. Marine Corps. The photographs include Marine Corps and Gendarmerie buildings and marines parading, shooting at the rifle range, relaxing, swimming, playing baseball, and competing in a track and field meet. Several photos show identified U.S. Navy ships at anchor. Of special interest are images of the Commandant, Major General LeJeune and the Haitian High Commissioner John Russell (a Marine Corps Brigadier General). Kraemer apparently was friends with some of the marines assigned to Marine Corps Fourth Air Squadron as a number of the photographs show aircraft (JN-4 landplanes, an HS-2 seaplane, plane crashes, planes lined up for inspection, etc.) as well as birds-eye views of the country. The highlight of the album is a group of three images showing one of the Marine Corps DH-4B airplanes that set a then-new-long-distance record of 12,500 miles in late 1923, flying to San Francisco and back. Sergeant Peter P. Tolusciak, the plane's co-pilot who would later die in a fiery crash, is shown in two of the photographs.

[An Archive of Scranton Lace Company Sample Images]

(Scranton, PA), (ca. 1925). 675+ gelatin silver photographs measuring 3.25? x 4? approx. depicting lace samples against a black background, item numbers pinned to lace. Some curling, else generally fine. Plus 140+ lace sample cyanotypes, measuring 4.75? x 3? approx. Generally very good. Plus 31 additional images in black-and-white: eight 15? x 12? approx., others various smaller sizes. With: faux-leather album measuring 13? x 11? approx. and titled ?THE SCRANTON LACE COMPANY / Corner Glenn Street and Meylert Avenue? on paper label to front cover. Interior marked ?curtains/table coverings book no. 3.? Contains 273 images of various sizes, cyanotype and gelatin silver mounted on black paper, some captioned with names of product lines. Plus: two invoices for yarn and other textiles. Joints and edges worn, several pages detached. Contents generally fine. A sizable archive of over 1,150 images from the Scranton Lace Company, a major manufacturer that operated from 1890 to 2002, consisting of samples used in home decor ? primarily window treatments and table linens -? likely photographed for internal purposes. Composed mainly of product sample photographs, including images of intricate lace patterns against a dark background and with inventory numbers pinned to the sample. Several enlargements of full table cloths and settings also included, with those mounted in the album cut ? with striking effect ? to create the illusion of a three-dimensional perspective. More than 200 of the images are cyanotypes, which are notoriously fugitive to light and are here uncommonly well-preserved.  The company was a leading producer of decorative lace throughout the 1900s. Notably, the invoices and marginalia indicate at least some of these styles were made from Rayon, which had only debuted commercially in the U.S. in 1924. Also noteworthy, firm designer Hugh Rodham (likely responsible for many of the patterns pictured here) is the grandfather of Hillary Clinton. The bulk of the company?s extant archives are held by two regional museums: Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage and The Waverly Community House. A comprehensive representation of period lace styles, ranging from traditional to contemporary and art-deco patterns, all rendered in exquisite detail. We will note for purely self-serving reasons that two small lots of about 50 photos ? both of a similar nature and from the same company ? made more than $1000 each at the 2015 Swann vernacular photo auction.

        Uhlands poetische Werke, herausgegeben von Raimund Pissin. Band 1: Gedichte / Band 2: Dramen * G A N Z L E D E R - L U X U S A U S G A B E in 2 Bänden
