A.A. Milne displays his satirical humor on the eve of "Winnie the Pooh" fame

Chelsea, UK, December 24, 1925. 5.5" x 7.5". "Autograph Letter Signed in full signature ""A.A. Milne"" and dated ""24. 12. 25"" (December, 24, 1925). One page, 5.5"" x 7.5"" on stationary with letterhead of 13, Mallord Street, Chelsea, S.W.3. Tel Kensington 2074. Expected center fold. Very light creasing, otherwise near fine.Milne pens a humorous note just before Christmas, to his close friend Vincent Seligman. His letter sarcastically laments about his lack of fame, and in a jocular manner suggests to Vincent to hold on to his gift of a limited edition until his popularity rivals Kipling and Shaw (little did he know he was only a few years away from that moment with his upcoming fame which occurred with his Winnie The Pooh adventures). The letter as written in full:""My Dear Vincent, 24.12.25 You are really too kind. I am overwhelmed of my very lovely present. I am sending from a limited edition of (illegible) which I hope you will like. When he and I are both more popular with collectors than Kipling and Shaw you can sell it, and start a repertory theatre. I had a great time in Liverpool, and have come back to a million letters and Christmas worries so good bye.Yours ever,A.A. MilneAnd thank you again so much""A limited edition of ""When We Were Very Young"" first appeared in the latter part of 1924 and is where we first meet our beloved Pooh."

        BUMBLEBEE

New Preston, CT: Bernhardt Wall, 1925. Limited Edition, number 28 of 100 copies. Hard Cover. Octavo. Bernhardt Wall. 18 leaves; 16 calligraphic and pictorial etchings plus an etched label tipped in behind the front free endpaper noting that the book has been “Etched, Printed, Bound, by Berhardt Wall, personally.” Second state with additional etching behind the dedication page so noting the state and the assurances that this book is not glorifying “grog” despite the over-indulgence by the bees on nectar. Wall goes so far as to suggest that “the bee government might well follow humans and institute an 18th amendment.” A fantastic playful production for the prohibition era! Bound as issued in cloth backed boards and decorative endpapers; the usual awkward book construction as Wall was most certainly a better engraver and printer than bookbinder; light foxing throughout; previous owner name on a preliminary blank. Uncommon. “Following Berhardt Wall,” p. 36. Signed by Wall on the limitation page.

Directions to servants.

[Waltham Saint Lawrence, Berkshire]: Golden Cockerel Press 4to (26.3 cm; 10.375"). [4], 35, [2] pp.; illus.. 1925 Beautifully done Golden Cockerel Press version of Swift's unfinished hilarious and satirical advice to English servants. While the first few chapters are mostly complete, a note tells the reader that "redundancies that occur in the text must be taken merely as an indication of its unfinished state." F. Young, A.H. Gibbs, and W.R. Mills served as compositors here with A.C. Cooper acting as pressman and John Nash providing => 12 striking in-text wood engravings. The text, completed on 3 January 1925, is printed in => green and black with 11 pt. Caslon O.F. type set in double columns on unbleached Arnold paper. This edition was limited to 380 copies with 350 for sale, of which this is => copy number 5 of only 30 bound in full vellum and signed at the colophon below the (gilt) cockerel by Nash. Full vellum over boards with gilt spine, gilt-rolled board edges, and gilt-decorated turn-ins; boards gently bowed with some light spotting and bottom of blue ribbon bookmark faded and frayed. A few late leaves very lightly creased across and a typical bit of foxing, notably at untrimmed fore- and bottom edges butoccasionally elsewhere and with one "dot" on title-page; in fact => a clean, pleasing copy of a handsome and very readable book in its limited issue.

        Leon Bakst

1925 - (BAKST, Leon) LEVINSOHN, Andre. Leon Bakst. Berlin: Verlag Ernst Wasmuth, [1925]. Folio (11 by 14-1/2 inches), original full vellum, uncut; original slipcase. $3500.Limited first German edition of Levinsohn's life of Bakst, number 23 of only 250 copies produced, tracing the artist's important contributions to the history of modern art and dance, with 68 full-page mounted plates of costumes and sets, 52 in color, including the frontispiece portrait of Bakst by Modigliani, and numerous in-text mounted linecuts and photogravures, many also in color."In the book of fame, the name of Léon Bakst is writ large". He was destined to modify profoundly the whole conception of the western stage." A gifted painter, Bakst is best remembered for the sets and costumes he designed for Diaghilev's Ballet Russes in the early decades of the 20th century. His exotic and sumptuous designs, in conjunction with Diaghilev's radical and provocative choreography, helped revitalize ballet and lay the framework for modern interpretive dance. It was the Ballet Russes that first brought such classics as Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty to the West, featuring scenery and costumes by Bakst. This "luxurious volume of color plates" contains beautiful designs from many of the Russian ballet's most renowned productions, including Firebird, Blue God, Cleopatra, Narcissus, and Bakst's famous Scheherazade (Steegmuller, 78). "Bakst's greatest claim to theatrical glory lies in his feeling for synthesis, in his impeccable instinct for harmony" (Levinson). Preceded by the 1922 American edition and the 1923 English and French editions. Text in German. See Freitag 422. Text and plates clean and fine. Expert repair to vellum along rear joint, minor toning to spine, binding attractive. Moderate wear to original slipcase. An extremely good copy of this splendid production. Photograph Album documenting the construction of the Lincoln Highway across the state of Indiana including the famous "Ideal Section" and its junction with the Dixie Highway

Indiana and Kentucky, 1925. This 8" x 6.5" album contains 54 glue-mounted photographs with an additional 19 that are laid-in. Most of the photographs measure 2.75" x 4.5", and almost all are captioned either on the page or, in the case of the laid-in images, on the reverse . The album and the photographs are in nice shape. The mounted photos in this album are of work on the Lincoln highway and its junction with the Dixie Highway showing the work crew, crew lodging, steamrollers, tractors, tar-spreading trucks, trucks dumping stone, stone-spreading by hand, leveling, loading of tar and stone into company trucks from railcars, vehicles and equipment stuck in sand and mud, and finished roadway including the Ideal Section. The 19 laid-in photographs show roadwork near Bargetown, Burnside, Harrodsburg, Livingston, and Stanford, Kentucky. These images are similar to the Lincoln Highway photos but also include a steam shovel, mule team, and three African-American boys who entertained the work crew with Stephen Foster songs. An important visual history of the first major transcontinental road construction project in the United States from the viewpoint of one of the workers. The Lincoln Highway was one of the first transcontinental automobile highways in the United States. It was conceived in 1912 by an Indiana businessman, Carl G. Fisher, and formally dedicated October 31, 1913. It ran coast-to-coast from New York City's Times Square to San Francisco's Lincoln Park. Initially, less than half of the route was paved. In an effort to provide the public with a vision of the future, Fisher obtained sponsorship from U. S. Rubber Company to build an "Ideal Section" of roadway between Dyer and Schererville in Lake County, Indiana that had concrete roadbeds, wide banked curves with guard rails, no crossings, and a parallel pedestrian footpath. Fischer also initiated the construction of the Dixie Highway which actually a series of north-south roads that linked northern Michigan and Chicago with Miami, Florida.

        THE CAROLINIAN

1925. Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1925. Original black cloth lettered in red, with dust jacket. First (American) Edition -- precedence uncertain between this edition and Hutchinson's undated one published in London. This tale has action and romance, like all of Sabatini's yarns, but it is unusual in that it takes place in the New World -- specifically, in South Carolina during the American War of Independence.~This volume is in fine condition; the color pictorial dust jacket (with dramatic illustration by Frank Schoonover and bearing the proper price of $2.00) is in near-fine condition with just a trace of wear at a couple of corners.

Photograph Album documenting life in one of the first Marine Aviation Squadrons to be stationed in the Pacific and its follow-on deployment to China to protect the International Settlement at Shanghai during the Chinese Civil War

California, Guam, Philippines, and China, 1925-1927. This large (15? x 11.5?) album 48 tissue-protected cardstock pages filled with approximately 275 photographs. The album is incredible well done. The photographs are in very nice shape. The album has very little wear, however it has a mended 3? tear on the front cover. This impressive album follows the service of a Marine, probably a commissioned or non-commissioned officer, assigned to Marine Scouting Squadron VS-1M. The album begins with photographs of Marine Barracks San Diego in 1925, follows the squadron?s deployment to Guam were it helped establish Orote Field at the Apra Harbor Naval Station (the first Marine aviation base in the Pacific), and concludes with a section illustrating its deployment to the Philippines and China, which had long been troubled by internal disorder. Highlights of this album include images of * the Marine Barracks San Diego, * a number of naval warships (USS Henderson, USS Chaumont, USS Pecos, USS Thomas, and more), * many Marine ground and sea-based aircraft including what appear to be Curtis HS-2L seaplanes and Boeing FB-1 fighters, * Orote Field including hangars, shops and target practice with 7mm guns, * departing Guam for China and the Philippines, * life in China (the U. S. legation, warships, soldiers from several countries including what appears to be a mule-drawn U.S. Army artillery piece, local Chinese, a camel caravan, scenes of the Forbidden City and the Great Wall), * life in the Philippines (a cock fight, baseball, the Dreamland Night Club and Brothel, docks, facilities, Philippine locals, railroad travel, a Boy Scout parade, urban and rural life), and more. In 1925 fighting between Chinese warlords reached the city of Shanghai, and twice during the year small contingents of Marines landed in the city to protect American interests. In 1927, a more serious threat blossomed as one of the Chinese forces pushed towards the city crushing all opposition in its path and panicking the International Settlement. Remembering the Boxer Rebellion and fearful of recent Communist depredations, the community clamored for their governments to provide protection. So, in early 1927, the United States ordered the initial deployment of about 340 Marines from Guam to Shanghai including Marine Scouting Squadron VS-1M as well as the subsequent deployment of the 4th Marine Regiment. This is one of the nicest military photo albums we?ve seen and a rare visual record of early Marine aviation in the Pacific and the initial establishment of the long-term U.S. military presence in pre-World War II China.

1925 - LEWIS, Sinclair. Arrowsmith. New York: Harcourt, Brace, (1925). Octavo, original buckram spine, blue paper boards, original printed paper label, top edge gilt, uncut. $2500.Signed limited first edition of what many consider Lewis' greatest novel, number 139 of only 500 large paper copies signed by him."Using for his theme the losing fight made by two men with whom scientific truth is religion, Mr. Lewis draws a picture for us that is disquieting in its disillusionment". Arrowsmith is a pagan novel for a pagan world". an authentic step forward" (Books of the Century, 63-64). Although Arrowsmith was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, Lewis declined the honor, ostensibly because Main Street (1921) had not been so honored. His rejection, however, also secured front-page status for this satire of the medical profession in the nation's newspapers. Adapted to the screen in 1931 by director John Ford. Einheitliche Feldtheorie von Gravitation und Elektrizität.

Akademie der Wissenschaften, Berlin 1925 - First edition, extremely rare author?s presentation offprint (not to be confused with the much more common trade offprint ? see below), and the copy of Einstein?s son Hans Albert, of Einstein?s first original paper on unified field theory, and the first to use the term ?Unified Field Theory? in its title. In the opening paragraph of this paper, Einstein wrote: ?After incessant search during the last two years, I now believe I have found the true solution? (Pais, Subtle is the Lord, p. 343). The half-dozen papers Einstein had already written on unified field theory were reactions to the ideas of others, such as Eddington, Kaluza and Weyl; it was in this paper that Einstein put forward the first original approach of his own. Einstein?s work on unified field theory was inspired by James Clerk Maxwell?s success in finding a unified theory of electricity and magnetism, one of the greatest achievements of nineteenth century physics, which showed that light was a form of electromagnetic wave, and made possible modern inventios such as radio, television and the telephone. Einstein continued his attempts to devise a unified theory of gravitation and electromagnetism for the rest of his life; his contributions in this area represent about a quarter of his entire research output and half his scientific production after 1920. Although he was ultimately unsuccessful, a similar vision was realized in the decades after his death in the construction of the ?standard model?, a unified theory of electromagnetism with the weak and strong nuclear forces (which were unknown in Einstein?s time), and efforts to incorporate gravity into the model continue to this day. No other copies of this author?s presentation offprint in auction records (it was not in Einstein?s own reference collection of offprints in the Richard Green Library). OCLC lists nine copies of the ?offprint? in US, but it is unclear how many, if any, of these are the author?s presentation offprint (none of the library records state ?Überreicht vom Verfasser?).Provenance: Hans Albert Einstein (1904-1973), Swiss-American engineer and educator, and the second child and first son of Albert Einstein and Mileva Mari (ownership stamp on front wrapper). He moved to the US in 1938, and spent most of his career at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was a professor of hydraulic engineering.?Einstein?s early work on the unification program after the completion of the theory of general relativity was, by and large, a reaction to approaches advanced by others. This is the case for the first geometrization of the electromagnetic field, proposed in 1918 by Hermann Weyl; for the first exploration of a five-dimensional theory suggested by Theodor Kaluza in 1919; and for the first attempt to base a unified field theory on the concept of the affine connection, rather than on the metric field, as advanced by Arthur Eddington in 1921? (Cambridge Companion to Einstein, pp. 289-90). Weyl (1885-1955) had introduced a new geometrical object into the theory that he called a ?length connection,? and he used it to establish a link between the geometrical structure, given by the length connection, and the electromagnetic field. Einstein was initially enthusiastic about Weyl?s idea, calling it ?a first-class stroke of genius,? but quickly found a serious objection to it, showing that it implied that the wavelength of light emitted by a radiating atom would depend on the prehistory of that atom, contrary to observation. Nevertheless, in March 1921, Einstein elaborated on Weyl?s theory in his paper ?Uber eine naheliegende Ergänzung des Fundamentes der allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie.?Another idea to which Einstein responded was put forward as early as 1919 by Theodor Kaluza (1885-1954), at the time Privatdozent in mathematics at the University of Königsberg; he introduced the concept of a fifth dimension to the underlying space-time manifold of general relativity and attempted to represent the electroma [Attributes: First Edition]
