Sigmund Freud signed and dedicated book with a scarce association, to fellow psychoanalyst Oskar Pfister

n.p., December 2, 1925. 6.25" x 9". "Sigmund Freud signed first offprint edition of his autobiography, ""Die Medizin Der Gegenwart in Selbstdarstellungen"" (The medicine of the present - in self representations) inscribed to fellow psychoanalyst Oskar Pfister. Published by Felix Meiner, 1925, Germany. First offprint edition in green wraps, 6.25"" x 9"". Marked ''Nicht im Handel'' (''not for sale'') and ''Sonderdruck'' (''offprint''). Signed, inscribed, and dated on the front wraps by Sigmund Freud to Pfister, ""Seimen lieben/O. Pfister/Freud/12.2.25"" (translated as To his dear friend) A second inscription from Oskar Pfister to Professor R. Brandt located on the fly leaf ""Seimen lieben Freunde/Prof. R. Brandt/In herzlicher Gesinnung"" (translated as To his dear friend … with warm sentiments). The book is protected in a custom clamshell case, with the front wrap design repeating on the front of the clamshell, and leather quarter cloth with raised bands on the spine, with a touch of slight rubbing to the front. The book is neatly nestled in the tray case and well protected.A rare signed and dedicated book by Sigmund Freud with fantastic associations. Sigmund Freud signed the book to Oskar Pfister, who in turn gifted the book 30 years later with a warm inscription to Professor R. Brant. Pfister and Freud both studied psychoanalysis, although Freud did so in a professional capacity, Pfister was more of a ""lay"" psychoanalyst. As an early associate of Freud, Pfister studied theology, philosophy and psychoanalysis with extensive interest in Freud's concepts of the Oedipus Complex, castration anxiety and Transference ( Transference is a phenomenon characterized by unconscious redirection of feelings from one person to another. One definition of transference is ""the inappropriate repetition in the present of a relationship that was important in a person's childhood) . Pfister and Freud shared numerous letters on these subjects which spanned over 30 years until Freud's death in 1939. In turn, Professor Brandt was a dear friend of Pfister's, who also actively researched, analyzed and questioned Freud's theories during the mid 1950's while writing his thesis as a Doctor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Ottawa, Canada. Brandt was highly analytical having both studied and extensively critiqued Freud for many years noting that ""Perhaps in no other field except religion has there been so much disagreement among such competent thinkers as there is in psychoanalysis"". And therein lies the common thread and perpetual philosophical debate between the three individuals which spanned over many decades.A fine condition book, with an extremely scarce signature by Sigmund Freud, with several wonderful and unique associations."

Ms. Brief mit eigenh. U. ("Retschke"). Paris, [um 1925].

1925. 1 S. Gr.-4to. Die Verso-Seite mit gedr. Briefkopf "Die Weltbühne [...] Paris".

The first of white paper, with his name handwritten on the second leaf, and (68 groups of) illustrations, mostly on leaf rectos only, a few using both sides of a leaf. The second, largest, of brown paper, with his name written on the front cover. Inserted: one sheet of trace paper with pencil drawing, and 24 leaves with colour pencil sketches of New Zealand landscapes, and people.= Trevor Lloyd (1863-1937) was a New Zealand artist, illustrator and cartoonist. ".Lloyd was born in Silverdale, Auckland . [his] work is evocative of the New Zealand bush and his work often contained Maori motifs. Lloyd exhibited with the Auckland Society of Arts in 1883, 1896, 1898, 1899 and 1907 and in 1927 at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts. Some examples of his work are available online. Lloyd was employed as an illustrator for New Zealand Illustrated Magazine from November 1901 until its last edition in 1905 (in which he was acknowledged). He also worked as an illustrator for Auckland Weekly News and as a cartoonist for The New Zealand Herald, retiring in 1936 after 34 years" (Wikipedia). The first sketchbook mainly shows a) scenes and people, observed and drawn by Lloyd during a boat trip, perhaps on a ferry; and b) spectacular solitary trees and ferns, in rectangular frames. The latter seems to be one of his favourite subjects: several New Zealand museums and art galleries possess tree etchings in his hand, and at least one of the drawings in this manuscript can be identified as the basis of one of his etchings. The former are not without humour: a harbour scene has, in the margin, the sketch of a surprised looking young girl, captioned "He's drawing in ink". Trevor Lloyd was, after all, also one the country's leading cartoonists. Of his India ink sketches those of landscapes are quite detailed; those of people more sketched -some in pencil. Among the pencilled illustrations is one of a cat sleeping in a man's arm, captioned "the prisoner", which left us to wonder who the prisoner was: the cat, or the man? The second sketchbook contains fine, balanced, crayon illustrations of New Zealand landscapes, and people, many captioned with the name of the location (e.g. Whale Island, in the Bay of Plenty, or Umu-Pura Pura, or a short description of the situation (e.g. "One of our backbones", "A warm day"). On some drawings a white tent is visible, suggesting that Lloyd went on a trip through part of New Zealand's Northern Island. Both sketch books show signs of travel and working in the open air. Thus edges frayed, a few smudges and small holes in some leaves, but generally in good condition. In all, a rich cross-section of Lloyd as an observer and artist. See also: John F. Perry.         Le chameau. En 2 volumes. Paris, J.B. Baillière and sons (colophon: E. Dessaint), 1925-1926.

1925. 2 vols. (25 x 17 cm). 748 pp. (4), 207, (1) pp. With 98 plates (numbered I-LXXXVII [part 1] and LXXXVIII-XCVIII [part 2]) and some illustrations in text. Later light brown cloth. First and only edition of an extensive work on camels by commander Gaston Cauvet (1860-1950?). The first volume deals with the camel's origins and habitat (covering west and central Europe, including Russia, Greece and Cyprus; Cuba; North and South America; Africa; Australia and Java), its anatomy and physiology, the different breeds (including dromedaries), external features and internal organs, its nature and character, nutrition, diseases and their gaits. On many of those subjects, including the digestive system and the reproductive system of male camels this book was one of the earliest accounts, and it is still a valuable reference work. Other topics covered in this volume are the use of camels for transportation, the uses of their meat, fur, skin, bones and milk, and their economic use and value (covering pilgrimages, weddings, wars and raids). Volume 2 deals with camels in the history of the Middle East (including Egyptians, Persians, Macedonians, Arabs, Berbers, Mongolians and Turks) and with their role in religion, covering Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, with a large section on the importance of the camel for the prophet Mohammed and for Muslims. Also covered is the camel in Arabic and French literature, and in art. - A very good copy. Mukasa-Mugerwa, The camel (camelus dromedarius): a bibliographical review, p. 11.

MASSIVE Map of Gettysburg and Approaches.

The Military Engineer, 1925 - A Map of Gettysburg and Approaches. From: The Military Engineer, the journal of the Society of Military Engineers, published at the Mills Building, Washington, D.C., 1925-1927. +++This is a massive map of Gettysburg, in 12 colorful sections, published 1925-1927 in issues of the Military Engineer, printed by the War Department Corps of Engineers, with the map measures about 40 square feet--it is a superb wall map for "historians and war games" (according to the journal). The maps are printed in color, include contour lines and all manner of human geography, in very high detail, including individual houses. +++The map is in 12 section on 8 separate sheets, with the bottom two thirds of the 3 section x 4 section grid being two maps on one sheet. Each map section print-line runs 23x17" (excluding margins etc.), the whole measuring about 70"x 68". All together, the map covers a piece of ground 23 x 23 miles, with 3" equal to about 1 miles (scale 1/21120). This is simply a terrific map. +++Condition: I'd say this was overall in Very Good condition, though the maps are clean, very bright, and very crisp--I doubt that they were opened very much at all (judging by the difficulty in opening them now). The major detriments are the occasional tears in the sheet folds. Currently they are folded, as issued, though I'm very tempted to open, flatten, and repair them so that they are ready to hang.

Arthur H. Clark Co., 1925., Cleveland - First edition. 2 vols. Cloth, 272pp., + 265pp., 10 plates, T.E.G. "Granville Stuart was one of the first to raise cattle in Montana. During the 1880's cattle boom he was manager and for a time part owner of the largest outfit in Montana, the D-H-S. Most of the second volume is devoted to this period.Stuart was an important figure in Montana, the president of the state's first stock grower's association and president of the Board of Stock Commissioners. His book has become a classic."---Bill Reese. "Nothing better on the cowboys has ever been written than the chapter entitled 'Cattle Business.' A prime work throughout."--J. Frank Dobie. "Written by a well-educated and influential pioneer of early Montana, this work contains much valuable history. The author did much to organize a group of latter-day vigilantes to break up a band of horse and cow thieves who became so bold in their operations that drastic measures had to be taken."--Ramon Adams. "Stuart was one of the first great cattle barons of the Northwest. His journal is one of the classic accounts of frontier life."--Clark/Brunet. A clean, bright, fine set.       1925. Fine. BENCHLEY, Robert. PLUCK AND LUCK. With illustrations by Gluyas Williams. New York: Henry Holt and Company, (1925). First edition. viii,295 pp. 8vo., orange cloth, lettered in black to spine and upper board, with vignette illustration printed in black and yellow to upper board, top-edge stained olive green. Ink ownership to ffep. This is a clean and bright copy overall. Just about fine. In a dust jacket which is moderately edgeworn, having a few short closed-tears and shallow loss at crown. The dust jacket, which is printed to all sides with type in red and illustrations in green, is sunned at the spine; as a result of this, the illustrated figure of a dapper gent in top hat and tails (printed in green) is a mere ghost of an image, while the title and publisher's name (printed in red) are very legible. This title is quite scarce in the dust jacket.
