London: Edward Arnold & Co.,, 1924. Illustrated. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles gilt to spine, patterned endpapers, top edge trimmed, others untrimmed. Frontispiece, 8 plates and a folding map at rear. Contemporary ownership inscription of Dr L. Stanley Torrance to the front free endpaper. Brigadier General William Dickson (1871–1957), was born in Tehran and held the role of Inspector-General of Communication in East Persia throughout the First World War; in 1920 he was appointed head of the military commission in Persia. This work, which provides an account of the history of the region, was reviewed contemporaneously in the Morning Post as "an excellent story which can be grasped in all its bearings by the general reader". It is notable however for its omission of any mention of the 1921 Persian Coup; a series of several events which led to the establishment of the Pahlavi dynasty as the ruling house of the country in 1925. Dickson, who was , was accused by many as being too closely involved in local government; leading Ironside to write in 1920 that he "must either act under my orders, or he must abstain from taking part in Persian affairs".

London/ New York:: Thomas Seltzer/ Duckworth,. 1924 - 1928.. First U.S. edition of the first volume and first editions of the rest; all four volumes in the scarce to rare dust jackets. Ford's tetralogy set during WWI, mainly in England and on the western front, where Ford himself served as an officer in the Welch Regiment. John N. Gray hailed PARADE'S END as "possibly the greatest 20th-century novel in English" and Mary Gordon labeled it as "quite simply, the best fictional treatment of war in the history of the novel." Basis for the 2012 BBC / HBO mini-series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Rebecca Hall. SOME DO NOT (NY: 1924), in black paper boards over half orange cloth lettered in black on spine. Orange cloth inexplicably but evenly shadowed on each side (the spine is fine) and pages a little darkened, otherwise very good to near fine in good to very good dust jacket with few skinned areas and marginal chipping affecting only the tips of letters at head of spine. NO MORE PARADES (London: 1925), in green cloth boards with gilt-lettered spine. INSCRIBED BY FORD to British novelist and friend Cyril Anthony George Bertram (1897 - 1978), "FOR ANTHONY BERTRAM/ Ford Madox Ford [underlined]/ Bijou 14 May MCMXXXIV." Faint offsets to endpapers and title page a little foxed, otherwise near fine in lightly soiled dust jacket with small stain on rear panel (otherwise near fine). A MAN COULD STAND UP (London: 1925), in green cloth boards with gilt-lettered spine. Foxing to page edges and title page, otherwise bright and fine in fine, lightly soiled dust jacket. LAST POST (London: 1928), in green cloth boards with gilt-lettered spine. Pastedowns and hinges darkened, spine ends just a touch frayed, otherwise near fine in good to about very good dust jacket showing light soiling, tanning to spine, small hole in front flap fold and chipping to spine ends that is not affecting any lettering. A remarkable set, nearly impossible to reassemble, especially in dust jackets. .

Miczys?aw Szczuka's cover and typographical design. The magazine "Nowa kultura" (New Kulture) was a short-lived attempt of collaboration between the Polish avant-garde artists and the Communist Party between July 1923 and September 1924 (initially published weekly, later monthly).         Saul Bellow : autograph letter, signed, circa 1960.

A RARE MANUSCRIPT LETTER WRITTEN BYPULITZER AND NOBEL PRIZE WINNING AUTHOR SAUL BELLOW TO FELLOW WRITER, THOMAS BERGER. Octavo sheet, on letterhead of the literary magazine The Noble Savage, manuscript in pen, dated 6/29, to the American writer Thomas Berger (1924-), urging him to contribute to The Noble Savage, signed Saul Bellow. In the Spring of 1960 Saul Bellow, along with fellow founding editors Keith Botsford and Jack Ludwig, launched The Noble Savage magazine, which was published by Meridian Books in New York. The magazine's regular contributors included such luminaries as John Berryman, Ralph Ellison and Arthur Miller, and it also afforded opportunities to lesser known but no less brilliant writers such as Berger, Thomas Pynchon, Edward Hoagland and Robert Coover. However, the periodical was relatively shortlived, with only five issues of the magazine published before Meridian closed the operation in 1962. In this letter to Thomas Berger, a younger writer who would achieve both great critical acclaim and commercial success with his 1964 masterpiece Little Big Man, Bellow seeks Berger's commitment to contribute an article to the magazine. The letter presumably dates from late June, 1960: 'Dear Mr. Berger, Harvey [Swados] has written to me about your interest in the con-man author. I think you could do a wonderfully funnny piece, and I wish you'd take this on... I admired Crazy in Berlin greatly and should have let you know it. This is one of those matters left undone which St Paul scolds us for. With me it's not only theological but psychiatric. Anyway your wild way of going at things pleases me enormously. You're a noble savage for sure. We don't recruit; we recognize... Can you dig up this operator and have a talk with him? It would be great fun. Yours with editorial ardor, Saul Bellow'.

        When We Were Very Young

London: Methuen & Co.,, 1924. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, gilt vignettes to the covers, top edge gilt. Illustrated by Ernest H. Shepard. Slight rubbing to extremities, light offsetting to endpapers; an excellent copy. First edition, first impression. The first and the scarcest of the four Pooh books with an initial print run of 5,175 regular trade copies. Milne had no particular ambition to write for children, but in 1922 a glimpse of his two-year-old son Christopher being taught to pray by his nanny inspired him to compose the verse "Vespers", a gently ironic take on the innocence of childhood intended for an adult readership, which was published in Vanity Fair in January 1923. It proved popular, and Milne was asked to contribute to The Merry-Go-Round, a new periodical for children. The success of these pieces led him to consider writing further verses for children, and he composed most of When We Were Very Young as entertainment during a dreary holiday in Wales. Many of the poems first ran as weekly instalments in Punch, charmingly illustrated by fellow contributor Shepard. When We Were Very Young was first published in London on 6 November 1924 to immense acclaim, and the first printing sold out in one day. By the end of the year more than 53,000 copies had been printed of what The Times called "the greatest children's book since Alice" (Thwaite p. 286).

Although the preface is dated 1914, publication was delayed until after the First World War, as Peter Marren notes:‘… at long last, in 1914, and the age of fifty-three, he had completed the last painting, written the last line, and sent the great work off to his publishers, war was declared. […] wartime paper shortages made publication impossible. By the time the war was over people had other things on their minds: publication was delayed a further six years until 1924.'         Zapiski poeta. Povest? [Aufzeichnungen eines Dichters. Erzählung].

Original-Ausgabe. - Kat. Sprengel Museum 218. - Bowlt/Hernad 73. - Kat. MoMa 750. - Andel, Avantgarde Pagedesign 252.

MY COUSIN PHILIP: BEING THE LIFE STORY OF PHILIP RIVERS PATER, SQUIRE AND PRIEST, 1834-1913. By Roger Pater [pseudonym]

London: Burns Oates and Washbourne Ltd., 1924.. Octavo, pp. [i-iv] v [vi-viii] 1-259 [260: blank] [261-263: ads] [264: blank], original decorated red boards, front, spine and rear panels stamped in black. First edition. A novel about the fictional 'clair-audient' priest whose supernatural encounters are recorded in MYSTIC VOICES: BEING EXPERIENCES OF THE REV. PHILIP RIVERS PATER, SQUIRE AND PRIEST 1834-1913 (1923). The story is told in the first person by Roger Pater. " ... the supernatural material is more implicit than explicit, but with, nevertheless, supernatural episodes and stories in the text." - Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy Volume II, p. 89. "To understand and appreciate MYSTIC VOICES fully, one must also read MY COUSIN PHILIP, especially for chapter 15, entitled 'A Sixth Sense,' an amplification of the introduction to MYSTIC VOICES that presents in detail Pater's psychological theories of clair-audience. Most important are the specific references to most of the individual stories as examples of the three classes or theories of clair-audience. MY COUSIN PHILIP is so well handled that one could very easily believe it the biography of a real person." - Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, pp. 317-8. "After R. H. Benson, the best examples of religious supernaturalism; 'In Articulo Mortis' and 'A Porta Inferi' are minor classics." - Robert Knowlton. Pater was first revived by Montague Summers in his influential anthology, THE SUPERNATURAL OMNIBUS (1931). Some authorities incorrectly give the author's name as "Hudlestone." Ashley, Who's Who in Horror and Fantasy Fiction, p. 144. Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 404. Private owner's name and address at upper edge of the front free endpaper. A couple of mild marks to boards, light foxing to page edges, mild tanning to endpapers, a very good copy. Much, much scarcer than MYSTIC VOICES. (#130806)

Zur Theorie der Radiometerkräfte [Theory of Radiometer Forces, Einstein, pp. 1-6] WITH Wärmegleichgewicht im Strahlungsfeld bei Anwesenheit von Materie [Thermal Equilibrium in the Radiation Field in the Presence of Matter, Bose, pp. 384-394] WITH "Zur Quantentheorie des Röntgenbremsspektr ums" [On the Quantum Theory of the X-ray Spectrum, Wentzel, pp. 257-284] in Zeitschrift für Physik 27, 1924

BOUND FIRST EDITION OF EINSTEIN'S 1924 PAPER ON THE PHYSICS OF RADIOMETERS; EINSTEIN'S TRANSLATION OF BOSE'S SECOND PAPER ON THE BOSE-EINSTEIN CONDENSATE (WITH UNTITLED ADDENDUM BY EINSTEIN); & WENTZEL'S SECOND PROPHETIC PAPER ANTICIPATING FEYNMAN'S PATH INTEGRAL APPROACH TO QUANTUM MECHANICS. This volume bears the ownership stamp of Friedrich Hermann Hund, a physicist well-known for his work on atoms and molecules. The Einstein authored paper, Zur Theorie der Radiometerkräfte [On the Theory of Radiometric Forces] presents Einstein's theory on the cause of radiometric forces (the physics of radiometers). His paper finds that radiometric forces act also on surfaces normal to the temperature gradient, in other words, also on horizontal surfaces. Weil 139, 143a. ALSO INCLUDED: "Zur Quantentheorie des Röntgenbremsspektr ums" by Gregor Wentzel. "Unbeknownst to Feynmann, Wiener, or Dirac, Wentzel had anticipated several of the most important features of the path integral formulation in two 1924 papers resolving differences between classical wave interference and the quantum nature of spectral lines. Published even before Heisenberg's quantum mechanics formulation, these papers included concepts such as the interpretation of a virtual path as a phase, the interference of phase paths, and the interpretation of the magnitude of the interference as a transition probability" (History of Science: The Wenner Collection, 372). Wentzel's vision was not vague, and he provides "a precise mathematical structure that closely matches Feynman's later findings" (Antoci, Wentzel's Path Integrals, 1). ALSO INCLUDED: "Wärmegleichgewicht im Strahlungsfeld bei Anwesenheit von Materie" is Einstein's translation of Bose's second paper on the Bose-Einstein Condensate. Bose's first paper, "Plancks Gesetz und Lichtquantenhypothese" was a seminal paper in the history of quantum mechanics (and one which Einstein also translated for Bose). Planck's Law and Light Quantum Hypothesis represented the "discovery of new statistical counting rules for light quanta and a new derivation of Planck's radiation law. This second Bose paper specifically addresses the emission/absorption of electromagnetic radiation by matter. Einstein added an untitled addendum that he did not yet completely agree with the author's findings. CONDITION & DETAILS: Berlin: Vieweg und Springer. Large 8vo. (9 x 6 inches; 225 x 150mm). Ex-libris bearing two small institutional stamps on the rear of the title page as well as an envelope slot on the rear pastedown. Bears the ownership stamp (on ffp) of Friedrich Hermann Hund, a physicist well-known for his work on atoms and molecules. Hund "was a German physicist from Karlsruhe known for his work on atoms and molecules. Hund worked with such prestigious physicists as Schrödinger, Dirac, Heisenberg, Max Born, and Walter Bothe. He published more than 250 papers and essays in total. Hund made pivotal contributions to quantum theory - especially concerning the structure of the atom and of molecular spectra" (Wikipedia). Very slight ghosting at the spine from the removal of a spine label. Regardless, a handsome volume solidly and tightly bound in black cloth over marbled paper boards; slight rubbing at the edges. Bright and very clean throughout. Very good condition.

        When We Were Very Young.

London: Methuen & Co. Ltd.,, 1924. With decorations by Ernest H. Shepard. Octavo, ( 190 x 127 mm). Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in dark blue morocco, titles and decoration to spine, raised bands, single rule to boards with pictorial motifs, twin rule to turn-ins, floral endpapers, gilt edges. With black and white illustrations. An excellent copy. 286).

't Schat der zielen, dat is: Het geheele leven ons Heeren Jesu Christi naer de vyer Evangelisten. Naer vervolgh des tijdts by een ghevoeght, in seven stucken verdeelt. Met seer schoon figuren verciert, gesneden door C. van Sichem, voor P. J. P[aets].Amsterdam, Pieter J[acobsz]. P[aets], 1648. With 686 woodcuts, many full-page, by Christoph van Sichem (many with his monogram), after his own designs and after drawings and paintings by Aldegrever, Goltzius, Dürer, Bloemaert, the Wierix brothers, Lucas van Leyden, Maarten van Heemskerck, Joannes Stradanus, etc. 17th-century vellum, manuscript title on smooth spine.

Hollstein XXVII, p. 51 (no. 52); Poortman, Bijbel en Prent 48; STCN (8 copies, incl. at least 2 incomplete); cf. Het Boek XIII (1924), pp. 195 ff. First and only edition of a Catholic devotional book on the life of Christ (in 5 numbered parts), the works of the Apostles, saints' lives, and religious emblems, perhaps the most richly illustrated woodcut book of the 17th century, with almost 700 woodcuts by Van Sichem, when one includes the 7 large ornamental woodcuts with putti, beasts, insects and flowers. Van Sichem may also have cut the numerous woodcut decorated initials with biblical figures, appearing mostly in the works of the Apostles. The book's title may have been influenced by an otherwise unrelated work published in the previous year, Den schat der zielen , an unillustrated translation of a work apparently first written in Catalan by Miguel Comalada, which saw later editions as well. The present work is built entirely around Van Sichem's extraordinary woodcuts. Christoffel van Sichem (ca. 1581-1658), the second and most important of four artists of that name, was one of the greatest woodblock cutters of the Dutch golden age. With owner's signature on endleaf. With the outer edge of the woodcut on the "Bosch der eremyten" title-page slightly shaved, a few mostly marginal tears, the largest in the gutter margin of 1 leaf repaired, slightly affecting the border, and a smaller one slightly affecting 1 woodcut, and a few leaves somewhat thumbed, smudged or spotted, but still generally in good condition. A famous and popular Catholic devotional work, with nearly 700 Van Sichem woodcuts.

        HENRY JAMES AT WORK

1924. [inscribed by Bosanquet] London: Printed and published by Leonard and Virginia Woolf at The Hogarth Press, 1924. Original cream wrappers printed in green. First Edition, being No. 3 in (the first series of) "The Hogarth Essays" -- and which is in fact, "the only book in the Hogarth Essays series to be hand-printed by the Woolfs" [Woolmer]. The number of copies printed is unknown, but according to the ledger 544 copies had been sold after 15 months (early 1926, and there would be a second printing in 1927). The front cover art is by Vanessa Bell.~Theodora Bosanquet (1880-1961) was the amanuensis of Henry James for his last decade (1907-1916); well-educated, she quickly became indispensable to James, tapping the words of his novels and essays into her Remington typewriter as he spoke freely. This is her memoir of those years, which she wrote eight years after his death, at the request of Virginia Woolf; much of this essay discusses how the two of them worked together. "Secretary; suffragist; incisive critic and parodist of Henry James; witness to and recorder of his death-bed dictations; writer of one of the best memoirs about James; tireless psychical researcher who channeled a marvelously verbose James after his death, Theodore Bosanquet was a novel waiting to happen" [Thurschwell -- noting that Bosanquet has recently been "fictionalized" by three writers].~This is a fine copy, essentially as new. Woolmer 42.~This is an inscribed presentation copy, with the author's inscription (the year before her death) "To Eleanor Nicholes | who so well and truly appreciates | The Work of Henry James | from | Theodora Bosanquet | September, 1960." Dr. Eleanor Louise Nicholes (1915-1997) was the rare books librarian at the Pforzheimer Library, then of the Widener Collection at Harvard University, and finally at Wellesley College; she was a noted scholar on the life and works of Mary Wollstonecraft, and also in the field of Mormon history. Virginia Woolf; Theodora Bosanquet; Eleanor Nicholes: quite a trio of intelligent women brought together in this volume.

Oeuvre originale

Its backbone was the collection of Wyndham Law of the Chinese Maritime Customs Service, and included oil paintings, watercolours, sketches, prints and photographs, most of which are based on landscape scenes of the South China trading ports in the 18th and 19th centuries, and of British activities in China.. The Chater Collection was dispersed and largely destroyed during the Japanese occupation, and only 94 pieces (now an important part of the collection of the Hong Kong Museum of Art) are known to have survived (Wikipedia).
