Zapiski poeta. Povest? [Aufzeichnungen eines Dichters. Erzählung].

Original-Ausgabe.

Karl Heinz Haag lebte in Frankfurt-Höchst. (Wikipedia) Theodor W. Adorno ( born Theodor Ludwig Wiesengrund September 11, 1903 August 6, 1969) was a German philosopher, sociologist, and composer known for his critical theory of society. He was a leading member of the Frankfurt School of critical theory, whose work has come to be associated with thinkers such as Ernst Bloch, Walter Benjamin, Max Horkheimer and Herbert Marcuse, for whom the works of Freud, Marx, and Hegel were essential to a critique of modern society. He is widely regarded as one of the 20th century's foremost thinkers on aesthetics and philosophy, as well as one of its preeminent essayists. As a critic of both fascism and what he called the culture industry, his writingssuch as Dialectic of Enlightenment (1947), Minima Moralia (1951) and Negative Dialectics (1966)strongly influenced the European New Left. Amidst the vogue enjoyed by existentialism and positivism in early 20th-century Europe, Adorno advanced a dialectical conception of natural history that critiqued the twin temptations of ontology and empiricism through studies of Kierkegaard and Husserl. As a classically trained pianist whose sympathies with the twelve-tone technique of Arnold Schoenberg resulted in his studying composition with Alban Berg of the Second Viennese School, Adorno's commitment to avant-garde music formed the backdrop of his subsequent writings and led to his collaboration with Thomas Mann on the latter's novel Doctor Faustus, while the two men lived in California as exiles during the Second World War. Working for the newly relocated Institute for Social Research, Adorno collaborated on influential studies of authoritarianism, antisemitism and propaganda that would later serve as models for sociological studies the Institute carried out in post-war Germany. Upon his return to Frankfurt, Adorno was involved with the reconstitution of German intellectual life through debates with Karl Popper on the limitations of positivist science, critiques of Heidegger's language of authenticity, writings on German responsibility for the Holocaust, and continued interventions into matters of public policy. As a writer of polemics in the tradition of Nietzsche and Karl Kraus, Adorno delivered scathing critiques of contemporary Western culture. Adorno's posthumously published Aesthetic Theory, which he planned to dedicate to Samuel Beckett, is the culmination of a lifelong commitment to modern art which attempts to revoke the "fatal separation" of feeling and understanding long demanded by the history of philosophy and explode the privilege aesthetics accords to content over form and contemplation over immersion.         Hyperprism for small Orchestra and Percussion

London: J. Curwen & Sons Ltd, 1924. First UK edition ["Curwen Edition 90747"], annotated by Varèse. 4to. Original printed wrappers with an Art Deco design by Witold Gordon, separated along spine and with remnant of old tape repair. Signed and annotated by the composer. Varèse has written in red china pencil on the title: "CORRECTED COPY / Edgar Varèse." In the same pencil, he made small corrections to the printed score, notably changing "Lion Roar" to "String Drum" on the listing of instrumentation, which he abbreviates as "St. D." in his corrections to the score wherever "L.R. [for Lion Roar] had been printed. 'Hyperprism" premiered at the Klaw Theatre in New York on 4 March 1923. The audience lauched throughout the performance and hissed during the ovation. It was reported that two men had a fistfight while exiting the hall. It is now considered a ground-breaking avant-garde composition. "I refuse to submit myself only to sounds that have already been heard," Varèse declared a few years earlier. "What I am looking for are new techical mediums that lend themselves to every expression of thought and can keep up with thought." Witold Gordon, who designed the cover, is the famed moderist illustrator responsible for two murals at Radio City Music Hall and the fine poster for the 1932 Olympics in Lake Placid.

Laughing Anne & One Day More - Two Plays.

John Castle, London., 1924. First combined edition. Introduction by John Galsworthy. Octavo. 127 pages. 3 pages of adverts at rear. [From the Library of Gérard Jean-Aubry] who was Conrad's close friend and his first biographer. From the library of noted Conrad collector Stanley J. Seeger with his small bookplate on front pastedown.Tipped on the blank facing page 19 ("A summary description of personages in the play") is an original sketch, in blue crayon, of the stage layout for Act II, Scene I of Laughing Anne and with the positioning of the characters written, in black ink, by Conrad: "Anne holding cards stands", "Mick", "Bamtz" and "Fector". At the lower corner is a note, in green ink, in Jean-Aubry's hand: "Plan de la scène - fait par Joseph Conrad." On the verso of this is a much rougher sketch for the final scene. The sketch may have been enclosed with a letter that Conrad wrote to Jean-Aubry in December 1920 in which he describes the work as "a play for Grand Guignol (English), 2 acts, 3 scenes. It will play forty minutes." The play did not get its first performance until 15 June 2000. Free endpapers tanned otherwise fine in very good nicked and creased dustwrapper with an enclosed tear at head of upper hinge. Preserved in a green buckram slipcase lettered in gilt and with an inner folding sleeve.

        Novels of the Sisters Bronte

John Grant, LondonEdinburgh 1924 - Twelve volumes, complete Quarto. beautifully bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in full blue smooth calf decoratively ruled in blind and gilt, spine with extra gilt, two maroon morocco gilt lettered labels, top edges gilt, silk bookmark bound in, marbled endpapers. Frontispiece illustration in each volume. Some volumes have a preface or introudction by Charlotte Bronte. The titles are:Anne Bronter: Agnes Grey, The Tenant of Wildfell HallEmily Bronte: Wuthering HeightsCharlotte Bronte: Jane Eyre, Villette, Shirley, The ProfessorMrs. Gaskel: Life of Charlotte Bronte Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855)Ê and her sisters Emily Bronte (1818-1848) and Anne Bronte (1820-1849) have charmed, inspired, and even shocked readers from the Victorian age to the present.Ê Raised in Haworth, Yorkshire, the three sisters produced such classics as Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.Ê Influenced by British Romantic poets like Wordsworth, Scott, and Byron, the Brontes produced a cast of unforgettable characters such as the devoted governess, Jane Eyre, and the lovers, Heathcliff, Cathy, and Hareton.Ê The Bronte Family website explores the lives, literature, and art of these important Victorian women writers. The Bront‘s are the world's most famous literary family and Haworth Parsonage, now the Bront‘ Parsonage Museum, was their home from 1820 to 1861.ÊCharlotte, Emily and Anne Bront‘ were the authors of some of the best-loved books in the English language. Charlotte's novel 'Jane Eyre' (1847), Emily's 'Wuthering Heights' (1847), and Anne's 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall' (1848) were written in this house over a hundred and fifty years ago, yet their power still moves readers today. To find two writers of genius in one family would be rare, but to find several writers in one household is unique in the history of literature. Charlotte and Emily are ranked among the world's greatest novelists; Anne is a powerful underrated author, and both their father, the Revd. Patrick Bront‘, and brother Branwell also saw their own works in print. The Bront‘s, published under the pseudonyms of Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell, were acknowledged at the time for their directness and powerful emotional energy, qualities which were sometimes interpreted by the critics as 'coarse' and 'brutal'. - Bronte Society. Spine a little faded, slight rubbing at spine heels, else fine [Attributes: Hard Cover]
