[Photo album]: Young Woman's College Album from 1924 to 1930 in Ypsilanti, Michigan Featuring a Photograph of Mary Pickford

Ypsilanti, Michigan / Virginia / California. 1924-1930. Oblong octavo measuring 8" x 6". 59pp. String-tied black leather over stiff paper boards. Contains 218 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 2.5" x 1.5" and 4.5" x 2.75" with captions, with additional ephemera from 1924 to 1930. Tears and chips with some pages detached but present thus very good with near fine photographs with tiny tears and creases. The photo album contains a plethora of photographs featuring Esther Davis and her adventures. Most pictures are of the three Davis daughters; Alice, Rachel, and Esther either posed or candid shots with their friends taken at Michigan State Normal College in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Esther Davis is seen dancing and smiling with all her glee club members, standing outside wearing fancy clothing or costumes, and graduating high school and college. Esther Davis lived in the Bessie Leach Priddy House, a sorority, at Michigan State Normal College. While most of the pictures are from Michigan, some are labeled from places in Virginia and California. Two of which feature photos of Mary Pickford on the set of Little Annie Rooney which was being filmed in West Hollywood, California. Pickford was 33 at the time of filming but played a spry and determined young Irish girl. The movie became one of the highest grossing films of 1925. Pickford is seen smiling with the cast in one photo and then posing in the other. Both photos are fine with "Mary Pickford in 'Annie Roonie," written on the bottom edge. An interesting collection of photographs from a young woman during 1924 to 1930 documenting her adventures with friends and family, completing her education, and her encounter with Mary Pickford. .

        When We Were Very Young

London: Methuen & Co.,, 1924. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, gilt vignettes to the covers, top edge gilt. With the dust jacket. Illustrated by Ernest H. Shepard. Spine gently rolled and a little toned, very slight rubbing to extremities, light offsetting to endpapers, an excellent copy in the unusually bright jacket with browned spine, faint foxing to panels, tiny nicks to extremities with very minor chips to spine ends. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the illustrator on the front free endpaper, "To Aunt Fanny, with love from Ernest, Xmas 1924". Shepard was very close to his aunts; his mother had died when he was ten, after which his aunts helped to raise him, taking him and his siblings on many trips. Shepard described Fanny as "the energetic one" and "chief organiser" of the family in his autobiography Drawn From Memory (1957), recalling fondly a story of her visit to the Jubilee illuminations, "in spite of Aunt Alicia's protests and warnings". This copy has been in the family by descent since the presentation. When We Were Very Young is the first and the scarcest of the four Pooh books with an initial print run of 5,175 regular trade copies. It was first published in London on 6 November 1924 to immense acclaim, and the first printing sold out in one day. By the end of the year more than 53,000 copies had been printed of what The Times called "the greatest children's book since Alice" (Thwaite p. 286). This copy is in the second state of the first impression, with the page number ix present in the preliminaries. In copies of the first state the contents leaf (ix-x) is unnumbered.

Original-Ausgabe. - Kat.         A History of Tennis.

4to., 2 volumes in original cloth lettered in gilt on spine. Illustrated with numerous plates and a large folding chart at rear of volume II. Spines slightly sunned otherwise a very good set. First edition. Supposedly limited to 820 copies, the actual limitation is probably much smaller, as it is rumoured that 100 were pulped in 1929, and perhaps as many as 380 copies were pulped in 1932. Earlier sections of this comprehensive history of tennis are a reworking of Julian Marshall's "Annals of Tennis" (1878), but it also provides a detailed account of court tennis over the fifty years since Marshall's book was published, complete with tournament records and valuable sketches of leading players. The second volume includes a section on the literature of the game.

This work, which provides an account of the history of the region, was reviewed contemporaneously in the Morning Post as "an excellent story which can be grasped in all its bearings by the general reader". It is notable however for its omission of any mention of the 1921 Persian Coup; a series of several events which led to the establishment of the Pahlavi dynasty as the ruling house of the country in 1925. Dickson, who was , was accused by many as being too closely involved in local government; leading Ironside to write in 1920 that he "must either act under my orders, or he must abstain from taking part in Persian affairs".

        Nowa kultura. Tygodnik. Rok drugi Nr. 8 (23). 23. II. 1924. [New Culture. No. 8. (23). February 23, 1924.]

Edw. Staniecki, Warszawa (Warsaw) 1924 - The modernist layout of the cover and the magazine was designed by Miczys?aw Szczuka. First edition. In publisher's printed wrappers. (169)-192 p. Miczys?aw Szczuka's cover and typographical design. The magazine "Nowa kultura" (New Kulture) was a short-lived attempt of collaboration between the Polish avant-garde artists and the Communist Party between July 1923 and September 1924 (initially published weekly, later monthly). The journal was officially edited by Edward Staniecki and Franciszek Kwiatkowska, however, the real editor who was also the founder of the magazine, the committed member of the Communist Party, Jan Hempel. One of the main contributors to the publication was W?adys?aw Broniewski, and through him, the Polish futurists also became involved in the project. The design of "Nowa kultura" was created by the avant-garde painter and graphic artist Mieczys?aw Szczuka, one the founders of the of the Warsaw avant-garde artist's group "Blok" and co-editor of the associated art magazine. This issue, besides articles by Hempel and other writings, published probably the first time in Polish a detail of Mayakovsky's 150 000 000, with constructivists typographical illustrations by Szczuka, and a reproduction of Georg Grosz's drawing. Cover slightly chipped at edges. Pages yellowed due to acidic paper. Overall in fine condition. In publisher's printed wrappers [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Saul Bellow : autograph letter, signed, circa 1960.

A RARE MANUSCRIPT LETTER WRITTEN BYPULITZER AND NOBEL PRIZE WINNING AUTHOR SAUL BELLOW TO FELLOW WRITER, THOMAS BERGER. Octavo sheet, on letterhead of the literary magazine The Noble Savage, manuscript in pen, dated 6/29, to the American writer Thomas Berger (1924-), urging him to contribute to The Noble Savage, signed Saul Bellow. In the Spring of 1960 Saul Bellow, along with fellow founding editors Keith Botsford and Jack Ludwig, launched The Noble Savage magazine, which was published by Meridian Books in New York. The magazine's regular contributors included such luminaries as John Berryman, Ralph Ellison and Arthur Miller, and it also afforded opportunities to lesser known but no less brilliant writers such as Berger, Thomas Pynchon, Edward Hoagland and Robert Coover. However, the periodical was relatively shortlived, with only five issues of the magazine published before Meridian closed the operation in 1962. In this letter to Thomas Berger, a younger writer who would achieve both great critical acclaim and commercial success with his 1964 masterpiece Little Big Man, Bellow seeks Berger's commitment to contribute an article to the magazine. The letter presumably dates from late June, 1960: 'Dear Mr. Berger, Harvey [Swados] has written to me about your interest in the con-man author. I think you could do a wonderfully funnny piece, and I wish you'd take this on... I admired Crazy in Berlin greatly and should have let you know it. This is one of those matters left undone which St Paul scolds us for. With me it's not only theological but psychiatric. Anyway your wild way of going at things pleases me enormously. You're a noble savage for sure. We don't recruit; we recognize... Can you dig up this operator and have a talk with him? It would be great fun. Yours with editorial ardor, Saul Bellow'.
