        In Our Time

Paris: Three Mountains Press, 1924. 30pp. First edition. One of 170 copies. Illustrated with a frontispiece author portrait by Henry Strater, an American painter and fellow expatriate who became friends with Hemingway in Paris. This is the author’s second book, published in a smaller edition than his first, a pamphlet of which 300 copies were printed. The sixth and final volume of a series of works by important modern writers, edited by Ezra Pound, titled “The Inquest into the State of Contemporary English Prose.” The book contains eighteen terse, untitled chapters, which Edmund Wilson called “dry compressed little vignettes.” A book with the same title was published in the US the following year containing fifteen short stories for which the chapters in the present edition served mainly as introductory vignettes. Only two vignettes from this book were titled and used as full stories: “A Very Short Story” and “The Revolutionist.” Most reviewers saw an affinity to Gertrude Stein in Hemingway’s spare prose style, and F. Scott Fitzgerald felt “a sort of renewal of excitement at these stories wherein Ernest Hemingway turns a corner into the street.” In tan boards, printed in red with a pattern of clippings from newspapers in several languages, and the title in black. Slight wear to extremities, else a very fine copy. Housed in a leather-backed slipcase with chemise, which shows some wear.

        in our time

Paris: Three Mountains Press. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, number 80 of only 170 copies, of Hemingway's second book - the book that would define his style and help launch his career. Printed on Rives hand-made paper and with woodcut portrait frontispiece after Henry Strater. "From their first appearance in 1924, the in our time chapters have been recognized by their author, readers, and critics as profoundly compelling prose in an altogether new form. '[I]t is where I think I have gotten hold of it,' Hemingway wrote to Edmund Wilson a few months after finishing them (25 Nov. 1923, in Selected Letters 105). Wilson, the most influential critic of his time for Hemingway's generation, agreed: '[H]is prose is of the first distinction,' Wilson declared in on of the book's first reviews and added, 'he is… strikingly original, and in the dry compressed little vignettes of In Our Time [sic], has almost invented a form of his own' ('Dry Points' 120)… "Numerous other reviewers, who had never heard of Ernest Hemingway, shared Wilson's enthusiasm, and even those repelled by Hemingway's violent subject matter acknowledged the power of his prose. Fellow writers, too, recognized that, as Scott Fitzgerald put it in recommending the book to his publisher, 'He's the real thing.'" (Cohen, Hemingway's Laboratory: The Paris in our time). Provenance: With decorative bookplate of Helen Hamilton by the noted American artist Ralph Fletcher Seymour on front pastedown. Hamilton is possibly the American writer and political activist Helen Hamilton Gardener (1853-1925). Paris: Three Mountains Press, 1924. Tall octavo, original publisher's decorated tan paper boards; custom cloth box. A few spots of rubbing to spine, one corner lightly bumped; boards a little bowed; usual discoloration to endpapers. A very nice copy. With only 170 copies printed, the scarcest of all Hemingway titles.

        Buddenbrooks, 2 volumes

New York: Alfred A. Knopf. 1924. First American edition. Hardcover. Near Fine-. 2 volume set of this First American Edition of Mann's acclaimed novel. 389 & 359 pp. Hardcover, black cloth, red titles; black and red endpapers; 8vo. Near Fine- copies in Very Good dust jackets. Head and foot of spines show light bumping; else, boards are tight and clean. Bright and clean contents; unmarked text. The only real flaw to these books is that they smell like their previous owner smoked a pack a day. Sound bindings and hinges. DJs show fading at spines and light soil elsewhere; the jacket of the first volume shows shallow chipping at spine head and foot and some separating at folds, but it is still intact, small pencil note at inner flap; the second volume's jacket is separated at the bottom 3/4 of the front hinge, very shallow losses at head and foot of spine. Both show shallow loss at corners; the image on the front panel of either volume has remained clean and unblemished. Unfortunately, the jackets seems to have the same smoky odor. Digital images available upon request.

A chatty letter: "Tho' I'm worked to death I want to write to you with my own hand and thank you for your surprising letter. I have worked as a farm hand, stoker & waiter... I'm sending you "The Bomb" & some little booklets.. which contain a number of my "Contemporary Portraits". These have sold better in the US than my short stories... I seem to have lost my way in life... A.S.(S) Burleson Wilson's Post Master General destroyed my magazine, Pearson's by holding up the mail on the pretext that he had been informed that there was something seditious in it. He took my money... I'm writing The Story of My Life... The most important book ever written / Yours Ever / Frank Harris" In very good or better condition with the original mailing envelope showing some use. "Frank Harris (1856 – 1931) was a British-born, naturalized-American author, editor, journalist and publisher, who was friendly with many well-known figures of his day. Though he attracted much attention during his life for his irascible, aggressive personality, editorship of famous periodicals, and friendship with the talented and famous, he is remembered mainly for his multiple-volume memoir My Life and Loves, which was banned in countries around the world for its sexual explicitness." - Wikipedia. Signed by Author. 1st Edition.

The Quantum Theory of Radiation in The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, XLVII, 6th Series, January ? June 1924, pp. 785-802

First edition of Bohr, Kramers, and Slater's renunciation of the classical form of causality in favor of a purely statistical description.  "After Kramers had succeeded in extending the scope of the correspondence argument to the theory of optical dispersion "thus rounding off a treatment of the interaction of atomic systems with radiation that accounted for all emission, absorption, and scattering processes" Bohr ventured to propose a systematic formulation of the whole theory, in which what he called the virtual character of the classical model was emphasized. In this he was aided by Kramers and a young American visitor, J. C. Slater, and the new theory was published in 1924 under the authorship of all three. As said, the most striking feature of this remarkable paper, as said, was the renunciation of the classical form of causality in favor of a purely statistical description. Even the distribution of energy and momentum between the radiation field and the "virtual oscillators" constituting the atomic systems was assumed to be statistical, the conservation laws being fulfilled only on the average. This was going too far: the paper was hardly in print before A. H. Compton and A. W. Simon had established by direct experiment the strict conservation of energy and momentum in an individual process of interaction between atom and radiation. Nevertheless, this short-lived attempt exerted a profound influence on the course of events; what remained after its failure was the conviction that the classical mode of description of the atomic processes had to be entirely relinquished." (DSB). ALSO present is de Broglie's "A Tentative Theory of Light Quanta," the first edition of the first English edition of three papers by Louis de Broglie, heralding a new era in physics -- the birth of quantum mechanics. The English translation is a translation of de Broglie?s three ?Notes? published in Comptes Rendus in September and October 1923.  The English edition includes an addition to the three papers and a postscript ? de Broglie provides a generalization of the theory that is consistent with the special theory of relativity.  This addition was not published in Comptes.  ?Louis de Broglie's conception of the wave?particle duality in 1923 opened up new experimental possibilities, initiating the era of modern quantum mechanics? (Medicus, Heinrich A., ?Fifty years of matter waves?, Physics Today, Volume 27, Issue 2). De Broglie?s ?greatest talent was a gift for spotting the obvious ? or rather, for spotting what would eventually become obvious to everyone else.  He thought deeply about the mysterious wave-particle duality that had been pointed out by Einstein as early as 1909, and arrived at a question that must have seemed almost childish at the time: if electromagnetic waves are also particles, then might not particles of seemingly solid matter (such as electrons) be somehow also waves?  If this were so, then beams of electrons would have a wavelength and a frequency just like light, and this would offer a ready explanation of Bohr?s quantization conditions: an electron in its orbit about the nucleus would be like a standing wave, such as the wave in a plucked guitar string, and only an integral number of wavelengths could fit into an orbit.  This very simple insight could have been seen (but was not) by anyone from about 1913 onwards. CONDITION & DETAILS: Entire volume offered.  Ex-libris with armorial bookplate on pastedown, small stamp on the rear of the title page.  The volume houses 8 plates.  Bound in three quarter calf over cloth with 5 gilt-tooled raised bands at the spine.  Gilt-lettered red and black morocco spine labels.  Minor rubbing and scuffing at the edges and on the spine.  The front board is starting to loosen a bit but is still holding tight and solid.  Bright and very clean throughout.
