The World Crisis, set of four British first edition, later printings in the rare dust jackets

Thornton Butterworth Limited, London 1924 - Here is a jacketed, four volume set of British first edition, later printings of Churchill's history of the First World War, which he titled "The World Crisis." These four volumes comprise the history of the war years 1911-1918. Churchill published these first four volumes between 1923 and 1927. Two supplemental volumes followed in 1929 and 1931. These were The Aftermath covering the years 1918-1928 and The Eastern Front, which Churchill initially proposed as "separate from but supplementary to our five volume history." (Cohen, Vol. I, P.234) We can supply copies of these two supplemental volumes separately, upon request. The volumes in this set vary from fine to very good plus, the jackets from near-fine to very good minus. Volume I, 1911-1914, is the British first edition, fifth printing. It was published in 1924, 15 months after the first printing, and retains very similar appearance. The dust jacket's pale green color, spine, front face, and front flap are identical to the first printing, with the rear face adding a blurb for the 1915 volume and the back flap adding reviews of the 1911-1914 volume. The navy cloth binding is identical to that of the first printing, with the exception of a single gilt star added to the spine. Volume II, 1915, is the British first edition, fourth printing, published in 1923, less than two months after the first printing. Notably, the dust jacket is identical to that of the first printing, as is the navy cloth binding. The two 1916-1918 Volumes, Parts I & II, are the British first edition, third printing, published the same month as the first printing. The dust jackets are nearly identical to those of the first printing, differing only in replacement of the six-line blurb at the center of each front face with five lines of review quotes from Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph. The volumes are bound in navy cloth identical to that of the first printing, though the volumes use thinner sheets than the first printing. The blue cloth bindings of all four volumes are square, clean, and tight with bright spine gilt and only trivial wear to extremities. The contents of the two 1916-1918 volumes are especially bright with no spotting and clean page edges. In the 1916-1918 volumes we note only a tiny Paris bookshop sticker affixed to the front pastedown of each volume and some denting at the upper fore edge of Part 2, affecting the blank margins of pages 531-561. The contents of the 1911-1914 and 1915 volumes are bright with no previous ownership marks and spotting limited to the page edges and the first and final pages of the text, the spotting very light to the 1911-1914 page edges, which are age-toned, and heaver to the 1915 volume page edges. All four dust jackets are noteworthy for both scarcity and condition. The 1911-1914 dust jacket retains the pale green color on both faces, with typical spine toning. The only noteworthy loss is at the spine head, extending to a maximum depth of .5 inch. There is fractional chipping to corners, spine tail, and the top edge of the front face as well as a faint L-shaped stain on the front face where another book or rectangular object once lay against the dust jacket. The 1915 dust jacket is an excellent example, highly complete with only fractional chipping at extremities and minor toning to the spine. The 1916-1916 dust jackets show shallow chipping to the spine ends and the upper edges to a maximum depth of .25 inch. Both 1916-1918 jacket spines are mildly toned with a few faint moisture stains. All four dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. Fully jacketed, first printing, six-volume sets today - on the rare occasions they are available - command a premium price well into five figures. This unique set offers the collector the rarity and prestige of first edition dust jackets for the four war years volumes at a fraction of that price. Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

J.B. Lippincott Company, Philadelphia 1924 - Reprint. Illustrations in color by Edna Cooke. Line drawings by Felix O.C. Darley. Spine a little sunned and the lettering a bit rubbed but readable, a very good copy. Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr.'s copy with his bookplate and juvenile pencil signature ("Joe Kennedy"). Kennedy was the oldest of the nine Kennedy siblings and was considered the scion of the family. His death in WWII propelled his brother John F. Kennedy into the family's political leadership role. It also prompted JFK to write a memoir of his brother, *As We Remember Joe*. A very uncommon signature. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        An Onlooker in France, 1917-1919

London: Williams and Norgate,, 1924. Revised and Enlarged Edition. Quarto. Original sand cloth, title in black to spine. With the dust jacket. Frontispiece and 95 other plates. Foxing to the edges, negligible encroachment in the margins, else very good in similar jacket. This edition published 3 years after the first, there were no intervening editions. "Sir William Orpen writes as he paints; that is to say, there is a hint of mockery in his words, especially when he is dealing with those whom the world calls great. The fighting man he loved, and we find a good deal of affection and respect in him for the fighting man's leaders, at least for a number of them. The politicians whom he met at the Peace Conference in 1919 he neither loved nor respected. His mordant wit and keen but slightly distorted observation - the observation of a satiric artist - makes his book one of the most remarkable of its kind" (Falls). Uncommon edition, distinctly uncommon in jacket.

St. Joan. A Chronicle Play in Six Scenes and an Epilogue . . . with Sketches by C.[harles] Ricketts

London: Constable, 1924. Folio, (6), 182, (2)pp. With 16 color illustrations by Ricketts tipped-in. Designer binding of white and brown full polished calf, covers tooled in gilt and blind, inlaid lettering on upper cover ÒSaint JoanÓ in red morocco. Minor restoration to backstrip, a very good copy in slipcase. Limited to 750 copies, this copy in a unique and quite beautiful binding designed by Gisele Aron and executed by Zaehnsdorf; it was purchased by the previous owner in London in 1958, and thus was probably created c. 1950-55. Surely the most beautiful printing of any of ShawÕs plays, this excellent edition on hand-made paper deserves a fine binding of this quality. Ricketts is best remembered for his work with the Vale and Eragny presses, and in the theatre as a set and costume designer.

Fairy Tales Illustrated by Kay Nielsen

London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1924]. 4to, 197pp. With a tipped-in frontispiece and 11 color-plates with captioned tissues, and monochrome drawings throughout the text, many full-page. Full midnight blue crushed morocco extra, inset panel on upper cover with inlaid illustration in colored moroccos of a man carrying a child, backstrip gilt, gilt edges, a superb showcase binding by Bayntun c. 1960 that is very slightly faded (perhaps from being in a showcase?) Limited to 500 copies signed by Nielsen. Danish artist Kay Nielsen (1886-1957) was the son of the director of the Royal Danish Theater and after art school he was quickly recruited as a book illustrator; his Fairy Tales was delayed for a year so as not to compete with another version illustrated by Robinson. That edition is now little known whereas this version is one of the best known illustrated books of the century. He turned to stage design for the Danish State Theater and only illustrated three more books before moving to Hollywood where he designed sets for movies and acted in small walk-on parts. He died in California in 1957.

The Odyssey of Homer done into English Prose by S.H. Butcher and Andrew Lang with Twenty Plates in Colour after the Water-Colour Drawings of W. Russell Flint

London and Boston: Medici Society, 1924. Large 4to, xxviii, 315pp. With 20 tipped-in color plates. Sumptuously bound in half vellum and blue buckram, pale green morocco labels on backstrip, gilt top, slipcase. A very fine copy, unsigned but likely a Sangorski & Sutcliffe binding. Limited to 500 copies. A lovely book, printed on handmade paper, with Flint at his sensually erotic best illustrating this epic edition. The artwork was created in 1914 but not published until 1924 due to the Great War and subsequent events. By 1924 Flint was at the height of his fame and this book is regarded as one of his masterpieces.

Image from the families stay in the English Countryside (Wylye) near the beginning of their stay in England in 1924-25. A warm and friendly image depicting a broad and beautiful valley. A soft patchwork of farmland lays softly across rolling hills broken up by clumps of yellow trees. The excellent quality of framing and pristine condition makes this print especially desirable. Walter Joseph Phillips (October 25, 1884 – July 5, 1963) was an English-born Canadian painter and woodcutter, acclaimed as one of Canada's most famous printmakers and for popularizing the colour woodcut in the style of the Japanese. His artistic career spanned from the 1900s through the 1940s, during which time his work was exhibited throughout North America and Great Britain. In 1940 he was asked to become a resident artist at the Banff Centre, then known as the Banff School of Fine Arts, where he played an important role in the development of their visual arts program- It's Walter Phillips Gallery, which focuses on contemporary art, is named after him. The Glenbow Museum in Calgary, Alberta holds an extensive collection of Phillips works and a research archive..

        Edmond-Henri Crisinel *

Cully 1924.

        THE ILLITERATE DIGEST

New York: Albert & Charles Boni, 1924. First Edition. cloth. About Fine, lacking a dustwrapper. Blue cloth. Illustrated with drawings. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper nearly filling the page: "To/J.C. Calhoun/a Friend/from/Will Rogers/(almost an author)/New York. Nov 15, 24." Rogers was born in Indian Territory in 1879 and had some Native American blood in his veins. He began in vaudeville and moved on to motion pictures, a career that was cut short when he died in a small plane crash in 1935 near Point Barrow, Alaska. Perhaps he was best known, however, for his syndicated newspaper column which had such a massive following that the proposition that he run for President was once seriously advanced. His saying, "All I know is what I read in the newspapers," became a popular catchword of the times. Books signed or inscribed by this most popular of American humorists, especially with such a fine inscription, are uncommon.

        THE DIARY

London: G. Bell and Sons Ltd, 1924. Hardcover. 187 x 121 mm (7 3/8 x 4 3/4"). Eight volumes bound in three. Transcribed by the late Rev. Mynors Bright, M.A., from the shorthand manuscript in the Pepysian Library, Magdalene College, Cambridge. Edited with additions by Henry B. Wheatley. FINE CONTEMPORARY TERRA COTTA CRUSHED MOROCCO BY SANGORSKI & SUTCLIFFE (signed on front turn-ins), double gilt fillet border on covers, upper covers with gilt insignia incorporating the initials "S P," crossed anchors, and looping ropes with Pepys' (misspelled) motto in Latin on a ribbon above it, raised bands, spines gilt in double-ruled compartments with central ornament of either a crown, a sailor's knot, an anchor, or crossed quills, turn-ins ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With frontispiece portrait of the author. Spines lightly and uniformly sunned toward pink, otherwise AN EXTREMELY PLEASING SET IN BEAUTIFUL CONDITION inside and out. Pepys' diary is available in various editions (see, for example, items #140 and 169); the chief value of the present printing is that it is done on India paper, allowing the full substantial text to be contained in a very manageable space. And the compactness of this edition is here very much enhanced by the bindings, made with high quality morocco and expertly finished. (The Sangorski Latinist has, however, fallen short of perfection: Pepys chose as his personal motto "mens cujusque is est quisque," or "what a man's mind is, that is what he is," but here the first word is unfortunately spelled "mons," Latin for "mountain.").
