AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, TO ARCHIBALD HENDERSON

Highland Hotel, Starthpeffer. 29 July 1924.. Two pages, on recto and verso of small octavo sheet of Highland Hotel stationary, in ink, ca. 200 words. Near fine, in postally used oversize registered envelope. Half morocco clamshell box. A working letter from Shaw to one of his chief U.S. advocates and biographer. Shaw notes that he encloses (not present) "what I have been able to do at odd moments and on rainy days to fill up that book for Harper. I can do no more, and ought not to have done this, as it involved postponement of more important work for which I was too lazy. As to the agreement ... the thing you sent me is absurd: Harper thinks he can escape his legal responsibilities by making a private agreement with someone to indemnify him, a proceeding which exposes him to prosecution ... all he can exact from an author is an assurance that the book does not contain any hidden libel. For all overt libel, sedition, blasphemy pr obscenity the publisher and printer are liable ... Harper probably thinks that he could murder me and have you hanged for it if he could produce an agreement to that effect ...." He thanks Henderson for some notes on "the New York Joan," and asks after Mrs. Henderson, mentions his hopes that this reaches him at Skyland (North Carolina) and closes: ever G. Bernard Shaw." In 1925, Harper & Bros. published TABLE-TALK OF G.B.S. CONVERSATIONS ON THINGS IN GENERAL BETWEEN ... AND HIS BIOGRAPHER, by Henderson. Henderson (1877 - 1963) was professor of Mathematics at Univ. of North Carolina.

SYSTEM OF ARCHITECTURAL ORNAMENT According with a Philosophy of Man’s Powers

New York: Press of the American Institute of Architects, Inc., 1924. Scarce first edition, not reprinted till 1966. With 19 (of 20) of the impressive plates from line drawings by Sullivan, plate 9 not bound in. Title-page printed in red and black. Folio, printer’s original blue paper-covered boards lettered in gilt on the upper cover, backed in linen, the spine with manuscript lettering in black. 12, 8 plates, [1], 11 plates pp. The text with some of the spotting an toning normally associated with the title, the plates much less so as they are on different quality paper, the blue boards and endleaves with some staining and wear, but still a very presentable copy. RARE FIRST EDITION. WE KNOW OF NO OTHER COPY CURRENTLY ON THE MARKET. Sullivan’s final work, the series of drawings was commissioned by the Burnham Library of the Art Institute of Chicago and includes and illustrates Sullivan's philosophy of ornament. "In these little masterpieces of poetic imagination,' said Frank Lloyd Wright in 1949 of Louis Sullivan's ornamental drawings, "the poet in him shines forth on the record as a free, independent spirit characteristic of the free of all time." Sullivan is famous for designing lavish architectural ornament that combined organic forms interwoven with an underlying geometric structure. Sullivan had a reverence for nature that first developed when, as a child, he spent his summers studying plants on the farm of his grandparents in Massachusetts. Later, this love of natural forms took shape in the leafy patterns on the facades of his buildings such as the Carson, Pirie, Scott & Co. store and in interiors such as his Chicago Stock Trading Room. He summarized his philosophy of architectural ornament in these influential 1922-1924 drawings. Published the year of his death, the book stands as one of the great treatises on architectural ornament.

The Novels of the Sisters BrontÎ

Edinburgh,: John Grant, 1924.. Twelve volumes, octavo, illustrated with photographic plates; a very fine untrimmed set in the original publisher's cloth, with gilt decorations to spine. A very fine set of the 1924 Thornton edition of the collected works of the BrontÎ sisters, probably the best of any of the collected works. It was printed in Edinburgh by John Grant and edited by Temple Scott. Profusely illustrated with photographic plates, it includes Charlotte's biography written by Elizabeth Gaskell, the well-known author of Cranford and North & South. After each of the sisters published their first novels in 1847 they became instant celebrities, although the pseudonymous works meant that much of the discussion was dedicated to trying to establish their true identities. Thei fame was further fuelled by Charlotte's rash dedication of her first published novel to William Makepeace Thackeray, whose wife, it turned out, had gone mad and had been installed in an attic, just like Mrs Rochester. Nonetheless, when they travelled to London in 1848 it was to wild acclamation.Although all three women died young, this handsome set is testament to their enduring appeal.

        Coaching Days and Coaching Ways

London: Macmillan and Co., 1924. Full Morocco. Very Good. 8vo. 18.5 by 12.5 cm. or 7.5 by 5 inches. xv, [i], 376 pp. Fabulous Riviere & Son onlay binding of full crushed morocco. The inlaid scene depicts a mounted groom holding another horse by its reins. Five colors are used in the imagery. This is set off with gilt rules, festoons and dots. The spine has raised bands with French fillet compartments and central motives of a horseshoe, bridle, and riding hat. The binding complements the book's wistful nostalgia for the pre-railroad era when coaches linked distant towns. We are taken down seven major coaching routes -- the Bath, Exeter, Portsmouth, Brighton, Dover, York and Holyhead roads. Captured are the atmosphere of the inns, the colorful characters one might have encountered, the occasional hazards. The work pulls us in as narcotically as a great Trollope, Austen or Thackeray novel, while greatly deepening our understanding of that lost world. Joints repaired. Some rubbing and wear to spine.

        The Fire in the Flint

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1924 - First edition. Some spotting and faint staining to the boards, a near very good copy lacking the dustwrapper. Inscribed by the author to Anne and Clarence Dillon: "To Ann [sic] and Clarence -- With all good wishes -- Ever sincerely Walter F. White. New York City, 29 August 1924." Clarence Dillon, a bond broker and one of the richest men in the country, and his wife Anne, were the parents of C. Douglas Dillon, who served as Secretary of the Treasury. The author's first book, one of the first wave of novels from the Harlem Renaissance, about a black medical doctor who returns to his Georgia home hoping to improve the lot of his fellows, only to be met with prejudice, suspicion, and violence. It deals in part with lynching, a practice against which White, in his capacity as the outspoken longtime executive secretary of the NAACP, waged a long and ultimately successful campaign.         Veni VD Vici

Milan: Verzocchi, 1924. An unusual trade catalogue for V&D, producers of high quality English firebricks in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The company was owned by Verzocchi a wealthy Italian industrialist who in the 1920s' began commissioning works of art by the most respected Italian illustrators and artists of the day. A condition of his patronage (and apparently appearance in this catalogue) was that a “V & D” logo brick should feature somewhere in the work. Verzocchi established a private-press to produce the catalogue. Works by Baldassini, Cisari, De Carolis, Depero, Dudovich, Marussig, Miti Zanetti, Nizzoli, Parmeggiani, Sinopico, Stroppa and Zampini, among others, are included in high quality reproductions each tissue guarded. The tissue pages contain faint descriptions (in Italian) of the specifications of the firebricks produced. There is a two page introduction by the author (in English) and 32 plates. The book is octavo, in quality "card" covers. The contents are unmarked. The binding is tight, the front endpaper has three rust spots presumably from staples hidden below. The covers have the odd mark, slight creasing to the oversize edges, one small nick and a little rubbing to the bottom of the spine. Overall, this is a super copy of a scarce item. .

Author's Original Corrected Proofs and Associated Matter for: DIALOGUES SUR LE COMMANDEMENT.

Paris, Bernard Grasset, [1924]. - Ca. 130 leaves, plus numerous inserts and pasteovers. Octavo. Original publisher's letterpress proofs, with authorial corrections and revisions (including substantial insertions and deletions) throughout, with leaves and slips of typescript (many with additional manuscript additions) inserted, bound up with preliminary drawings for the layout of the title leaf and ornaments. Full deep red brown crushed levant by La Haye, with geometric inlays in red and medium brown morocco extending across boards, with doublures with matching red morocco inlays, t.e.g., others untrimmed. One joint a bit rubbed, some spotting along top edge of upper board, with small ink drop on spine, internally very good consistent with nature of material. Maurois's set of corrected galley proofs for this work, the preliminaries mock-ups still reflecting the working title, NICIAS TROIS DIALOGUES SUR LE COMMANDMENT. While the proofs show the usual corrections of mechanicals and the like, Maurois also chose to substantially edit and rework the text in a number of places by way of pasteovers and inserts (including in one instance three full quarto leaves of typescript, and several other instances of almost full leaves of single-spaced typescript). He made substantial deletions of a number of long passages and the original text remains completely accessible. An inserted preliminary bears Maurois's caption title for his work in his hand (including two additional alternate titles), and his presentation inscription: "Pour Jean Lévy-Strauss, ami du livre et de l'auteur, en affecteux souvenir". - Talvart & Place notes the preparation of fifteen copies of the text prior to correction for circulation hors commerce; the corrected text for which these proofs and leaves of manuscript/typescript evidently served as basis was published in the distinguished Les Cahiers Verts series.         Builders of Modern Indian: MAHATMA GANDHI An Essay in Appreciation

Calcutta: Association Press, 1924. Rare First Edition, SIGNED AND DATED BY MAHATMA GANDHI. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece portrait and 5 additional portraits from various sources. 8vo, publisher's original paper covered boards printed on the upper cover in black, backed in gray/blue cloth, the spine gilt lettered. 136 pp. A very attractive and well preserved copy, far better than would be expected for a Calcutta printing of the period, the prelims with a bit of age evidence, the spine just a touch toned. SIGNED AND DATED BY MAHATMA GANDHI IN 1926, one of the greatest men of the age. The work is rare in first edition and in collectable condition and we know of no other copy signed by Gandhi. This is an exceptionally early work on Gandhi, published only a few years after he had become leader of the Indian National Congress and was signed a year prior to the publication of his "MY EXPERIMENTS WITH TRUTH".

The "Union of Socialists-Revolutionaries Maximalists was a political party in the Russian Empire, a radical wing expelled from the Socialist-Revolutionary Party in 1906. The Union united agrarian terrorists, the 'Moscow Opposition' and other radical dissidents from the PSR in an independent party. The Maximalists officially split off from the PSR at its Second Congress in Imatra in 1906. Maximalists played a role in both the Revolution of 1905 and the Revolution of 1917. Many former SR Maximalists eventually joined the Russian Communist Party (Bolshevik)….Maximalists were so called because they demanded the full implementation of the 'maximum programme' in the expected revolution: full socialisation of the land, factories and all other means of production. The orthodox Socialist-Revolutionaries wanted to start with land reform but defer socialisation of other means of production. The Maximalists also rejected the PSR's version of a 'two-stage' revolution, a theory associated with V.M. Chernov. According to Chernov, the coming revolution in Russia would not be purely 'bourgeois-democratic' as the Social-Democrats claimed, but would include social and economic as well as political reforms. It would be a 'popular-democratic' revolution, and would transition into a full-blown 'labour-socialist' revolution later on. The Maximalists rejected this as Social-Democratic 'attentism' and argued that the coming Russian revolution would not be able to stop half-way; it was the two-stage theory, not Maximalism, that was unrealistic if it thought the toiling masses, once liberated, would content themselves with a bourgeois republic and gradual reforms." (Wikipedia, 2012) OCLC lists 9 copies. Publisher's typo on final page of No. 20/21: issue listed as "No. 20-25". Pages darkened but not fragile; some edgewear. Issue no. 24-26 worn with minor closed tears along gutter margin. Issue no. 8 outer wrappers detached but present. No 12/13 with small loss of paper and a few words. Overall, in Very Good Condition, a scarce complete run of this important journal. (RUS-11-37) .

        MARK TWAIN'S AUTOBIOGRAPHY

1924. With an Introduction by Albert Bigelow Paine. In Two Volumes. New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1924. 2 pp Vol II undated ads. Original blue cloth, with dust jackets, in the original publisher's box. First Edition. This is not so much an autobiography as an unconnected series of thoughts put down over the years, with the stipulation that they not be published until after his death ("I am writing from the grave. On these terms only can a man be approximately frank").~This is a remarkably fine, complete set: the two volumes are as new, the two dust jackets are fine except for fading of their spines and a few small smudges, and the publisher's box, while showing some minor wear at its edges, is uncommonly present. Blanck 3537 (state A, with ads in Vol II); McBride p. 254. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase.

MARK TWAIN'S AUTOBIOGRAPHY, With an Introduction by Albert Bigelow Paine

New York: Harper and Brothers, 1924. 2 volumes. First edition, first state. Portrait frontispiece in each volume. Tall 8vo, publisher’s original dark-blue ribbed cloth gilt lettered on the spines, t.e.g., with a facsimile of Twain’s autograph in gilt on the upper covers. 361, index; 357, index, ads pp. An especially fine and very bright, and very clean set. A beautiful example, as pristine. Rarely encountered in this condition. A BEAUTIFULLY PRESERVED AND ESPECIALLY HANDSOME COPY OF THE FIRST STATE OF THE FIRST EDITION. “As might be expected of anything which Mark Twain wrote, this autobiography is unlike any other ever written-as unconventional and unorthodox as its great author. Always, when the time came for him to go on with the dictation, he chose as his subject whatever was most interesting to him at the moment, regardless of chronological order. For he believed that a man’s thoughts, not his outward acts are his true history, which alone reveal him completely. “The resulting book is a stream of table-talk: anecdotes, humorous and serious; reminiscences of his mother, his daughter Susy, his boyhood days in Missouri; chronicles of his friendships with all manner of men, from General Grant and President Cleveland to his Irish coachman and the unfamed intimates of his vagabond youth; bold expressions of opinion on every sort of topic-all are here, full of the vigor and the humanity of their author, and forming an inexhaustible mine of entertainment, amusement, and delight.” Dictated by Twain over several years with the stipulation that it be published after his death.
