Paris: Le Goupy, 1924 - Quarto. Original cream wrappers printed in black and red. Housed in a black cloth solander box made by The Chelsea Bindery. Loose in the rubbed and rather marked outer wrappers, tanned at the edges and with a split to the lower portion of the front joint. 12 hand-coloured compositions. First edition, first printing, one of 925 numbered copies (of a total edition of 976). With the signed presentation inscription to the half-title, "To Ernest Hemingway from Harold Stearns. Any guy who can write 'My Old Man' deserves this—and plenty of it. Paris, September, 1924". Stearns had been associate editor of The Dial prior to heading to Paris where he wrote of his fellow expatriates, of their lives and their writing. The reference in this inscription is to one of Hemingway's earliest published short stories. Hemingway made great claims for his own pugilistic capacity. Stearns perhaps meant this little picture book to serve as a gentle reminder that writing about the fight game is a good deal less painful than participation in it.         Dreamlight [Mazda Calendar]

Edison Mazda; 1924 (copyright); 19" X 8 1/2" - NF. This is a complete 1925 Edison Mazda calendar containing Parrish's delightful image of Dreamlight. Maxfield Parrish furnished paintings for 17 annual Edison Mazda calendars (1918 through 1934), with the earliest calendars being the scarcest and more sought after. Dreamlight is from the middle period, and is a delightful image with deep Parrish blues in the water and background, and the young woman highlighted from light coming through the trees behind her. This is a near mint calendar with a full pad, the calendar itself being very clean and with only the start of a bend the upper 1/2" LH corner of the calendar (not reaching the printing). All pages of the pad are present, with the top 'year' page having a small 1" tear and (as is usually found) some rust coloring around the staples. The color of the calendar is outstanding, as can be seen from the accompanying photos. The calendar had been stored flat until recently, when it was framed (in 2000) to better protect it. The calendar can be removed from the frame, at which time the original Mazda advertising on the reverse side of the calendar (listing and describing all of Parrish's prior calendars - with a small B&W photo of each) can be seen. A truly delightful item for the Parrish collector. TO SEE MORE PICTURES AND ADDITIONAL SPECIAL ITEMS, VISIT OUR BOOKSELLER's HOMEPAGE.

Generaldirektor Ole Olsens Kunstsamlinger: Ole Olsens Art Collections / Ole Olsens Kunstsammlungen *COMPLETE IN TWO VOLUMES*

      F. Bruckmann A.G., Munchen, Germany 1924 - Undated. Circa 1924. (8) + 104; 104 + 112 + (4); (8) + 76 + 74 + 80 p. "The importance of the collection of chief manager Ole Olsen in Kopenhagen, which is described by this catalogue to lovers of art and science, consists chiefly in the variety and completeness with regard to the quantity of works of old industrial art. Only a few of the great collections of the old and new continent can rival this collection in extent, quality and variety of the industrial antiquities. Nearly all spheres of artistic work from the prehistorical period to the end of the eighteenth century are represented by characteristic, sometimes excellent works. This work brings to lovers of art and scholars of old industrial art, a catalogue such has not been published since the great catalogues of the Spitzer, Lanna and Morgan collections. Giving the descriptions in Danish, English and German, the possessor and the editor hope to render a service to the science of the history of art." - from Introduction. Volume I contains 140 black and white plates, with 94 in Volume II. Includes Northern Silver Marks and photographic frontis of Ole Oleson. Unmarked. Light wear and soiling.

        The Constant Nymph

Heinemann, London 1924 - First edition, first printing, second issue with the half-title in the second state; in second issue dustwrapper with variant ads on the rear panel (copies of the first printing of the first edition were so altered very early in the distribution process, possibly even before the book was issued, as the additional books added to the advertising were issued at approximately the same time as this title. Copies of the first issue with all points are rare). Modest foxing to the foredge, and some slight rubbing to the boards, else about fine in very good or better dustwrapper with faint splash marks on the spine, a small, faint stain on the front panel, and very small nicks and tears at the spine ends. The author's second novel, a major and surprise bestseller, about an adolescent girl who falls in love with an older composer, who becomes her guardian when he marries her haughty cousin, who in turn is suffused with jealousy over the close relationship between the girl and her husband. Adapted by the author (along with Basil Dean) into a successful play, and filmed at least four times, among them: in 1928 directed by Adrian Brunel and Basil Dean, and featuring Ivor Novello, Mabel Poulton, and Elsa Lancaster; in 1933, again directed by Dean, with Victoria Hopper and Brian Aherne; and probably most memorably in 1943 directed by Edmund Goulding, and featuring Charles Boyer and Joan Fontaine (who was nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award).         The Common Sense of Money and Investments

Simon and Schuster New York 1924 - First Edition. Small octavo. Author's first book. Uncommon investment and finance book by Rukeyser who was financial editor of the New York Tribune (1920-23) and the New York Evening Journal (1923-26). He wrote a financial column for the Hearst newspapers (1927-58) and thereafter a nationally syndicated column, "Everybody's Money." Rukeyser's books include Common Sense of Money and Investments (1924), Financial Security in a Changing World (1940), The Attack on Our Free Choice (1963), The Kennedy Recession (1963), and Collective Bargaining (1969).
