        The Constant Nymph

London: William Heinemann Ltd, 1924. First edition. Fine/Near Fine. A Fine copy of the book, bright and sharp, in a Near Fine dust jacket. Jacket toned on the spine and at the top-edge of the rear flap, otherwise an excellent, complete example. Both book and jacket are second issue, as usual. Margaret Kennedy's novel is set in Tyrol, where it follows the fourteen year old daughter of a famous composer who falls for one of her father's friends. On its release, the book became extremely popular - selling over a million copies in its first five years - though it was controversial due to its relatively frank treatment of sex. Focusing on an artistic family, the book is thought to have originated the "bohemian" genre of literature. It was made into a well-received play and three films, including a 1943 movie for which Joan Fontaine received an Academy Award nomination. "[T]here are literary virtues in The Constant Nymph which, to my mind, remove it entirely from the ranks of ephemeral best-sellerdom." (Contemporary review in The Saturday Review of Literature). Fine in Near Fine. dust jacket.

Secret Societies and Subversive Movements *First Edition*

London Boswell Printing & Publishing Co., Ltd. 1924. 419 pages. Index. Footnotes. Frontis portrait of Adam Weishaupt. "I have felt impelled to devote one more book to the Revolution as a whole by going this time further back into the past and attempting to trace its origins from the first century of the Christian era. For it is only by taking a general survey of the movement that it is possible to understand the causes of any particular phase of its existence. The French Revolution did not arise merely out of conditions or ideas peculiar to the eighteenth century, nor the Bolshevist Revolution out of political and social conditions in Russia on the teaching of Karl Marx. Both these explosions were produced by forces which, making use of popular suffering and discontent, had long been gathering strength for an onslaught not only on Christianity, but on all social and moral order." - from Preface. Bookplate upon front free endpaper. Last two leaves of index loose but present. Back free endpaper not present. Front board loosely attached. Tiny bit of writing atop last blank page. No other markings noticed. Gilt lettering upon backstrip worn but legible. First Edition Hard Cover 8vo - over 7?" - 9?" tall; First Edition. Fair

Der Wahlesel rührt sich. Entwurfszeichnung in Blei. 1924. 59,5 x 46,0 cm.

- Gut erhaltenes Blatt. - Dazu: Die Aktion. XVIII. Jahrg., Heft 2/3. 3000 gr. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Metro Goldwyn Mayer, Hollywood 1924 - A rare original 8" x 10" portrait of Lon Chaney in his clown make-up and costume from the film "He Who Gets Slapped" that was directed by the legendary Swedish director Victor Seastrom. Also included is a scene still from Chaney's film "The Monster" which does not picture Chaney.

Klonklavation Celebration Michigan Knights of the Ku Klux Klan July 4th, 1924 (Original Panoramic Photograph)

Cartwrights Photography, Owosso, Mich. 1924 - Original panoramic photograph, 8" x 41 3/4", unframed, rolled. Near Fine, slight soiling rear, 1/4" tear and small crease top edge. Original stamp in blue inkon rear stating "Duplicates can be had for $1.50 at Cartwrights, Owosso". Milton V. Cartwright is listed in the "Directory of Early Michigan Photographers" by David V. Tinder, published by Clements Library, 2013. One of the largest gatherings ever of the Ku Klux Klan, over 100,000 people swarmed to Jackson, Michigan on July 4th, 1924 to witness or take part in the fair-like festivities of the so-called "Klonklavation". Thousands of Klansmen marched through the streets of Jackson in a parade that stretched for 2 miles and included 17 floats, 8 bands, and a women's drum corps. At the meeting grounds, which were closely guarded by several hundred Klansmen, the crowds were entertained by a biplane and aerial stuntsman( the plane and a parachutist are seen above the campgrounds in the photograph!). A truly amazing and RARE photograph showing the Klan at the height of their numbers in the US. Internal divisions, criminal behavior by leaders, and external opposition brought about a collapse in membership by 1930. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Atlas City of Toronto Plate 132 [Lawrence Ave West, Yonge St. & Fairlawn Ave.]

      c. 1924, Toronto - Map of Toronto at the intersection of Greer Rd. and Fairlawn Ave. with Deloraine Ave. to the North, Yonge St. to the East., Lawrence Ave. to the South and Grey Rd. to the West. English railway engineer, went to Canada in 1868, where he did not pursue engineering, but became a representative for the Sanborn Company which published fire insurance plans. From 1875 Goad began to compile and publish his own large-scale plans of Canadian towns from a base in Montreal, and soon became the largest private mapmaker in Canada. By 1885 Charles Goad had returned to Britain and established a branch in London. Goad?s highly detailed plans included information on property holdings, building construction, use and contents, and, like Sanborn?s, functioned as Fire Insurance Plans. Once leased to an insurance company the map volumes were regularly updated by a team of workers who over-pasted sections with new information onto the existing maps, some of them building up to many layers. Goad?s business rapidly expanded to cover the cities and industrial areas of Britain, Denmark, France, Egypt, Turkey, Venezuela, Bermuda, Mexico and South Africa. After his death the company was run by his three sons. Copyrights and assets of the Canadian branch of the company were sold to The Underwriter?s Survey Bureau in 1931., Size : 457x707 (mm), 18x27.875 (Inches), Printed in Color, 0
