TO LHASA IN DISGUISE. A Secret Expedition Through Mysterious Tibet

New York The Century Company 1924 - First edition, the preferred American issue which precedes the London edition and which has more illustrations. With a portrait frontispiece and 65 illustrations from photographs on 18 double-sided glossy plates. 8vo, original publisher’s blue cloth lettered in gilt and decorated with gilt scenes showing Lhasa on the upper cover and spine, in the rare original green paper dustjacket. xiv, 462 pp. A beautiful copy, extremely fresh and clean, the text is near as pristine, the cloth bright and unfaded as well, the hinges firm and solid, only the lightest signs of age to the edges; the the scarce jacket is bright and unfaded, with only a few small chips to the extremeties, and a closed tear with no loss to the cover. FIRST EDITION, RARE IN THE ORIGINAL DUSTJACKET AND VERY HARD TO FIND IN SUCH NICE CONDITION. Travels in 1922 to Lhasa through Sikkim as part of the British "Buddhist Mission." During the trip McGovern was granted a secret interview with the Dalai Lama. Lhasa, in fact all of Tibet, was at the time rigidly guarded against outside visitors.         Modern French Music

Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company. 1924. First. First edition. Blue cloth gilt. Embossed stamp of Virgil Thomson on title page, wear and small tears to cloth mostly along the bottom extremities, else very good. Inscribed by Hill: "To Virgil Garnett Thomson, long-suffering and diligent assistant, his friend, Edward Burlingame Hill. Christmas, 1924." Hill was an American composer, little remembered today, but his influence was great. Among his students at Harvard were Thomson, Leonard Bernstein, Roger Sessions, Elliott Carter, and Walter Piston. Although we can find no printed acknowledgment of Thomson in the book, the inscription would indicate that he had a considerable part in its creation. .

C:a 25 × 16,5 cm vardera. Ramade tillsammans i en djup lådliknande ram. Proveniens: Linnea Braun.

New York: B.W. Huebsch. 1924. First. First edition. Light contemporary name in pencil ("H.L. Rounds"), else fine in an attractive, very good dustwrapper with the spine tanned. Signed by the author. Anderson's first of three autobiographies. Aside from the towering achievement of Anderson's short stories, one of his greatest feats was to move American literature into the modern age by breaking down the boundaries between fiction and autobiography. It was said his fiction was mostly autobiography and his autobiographies were mostly fiction. It was in this volume that the process became most evident. Johnson High Spot of American Literature. .
