        Autograph letter signed ("TE Shaw").

Clouds Hill, Moreton, Dorset, 15. X. 1924. - 2 pp. 8vo. With autogr. envelope. Includes TDS by G. E. B. Bromley-Martin, of the Bank of Liverpool and Martin, London (dated 22. Dec. 1924). To Whitney H. Shepardson of New York, who had inquired as to how he might obtain a copy of the "Seven Pillars of Wisdom" when the book was finally published: "The Prophet has sent me on your letter, with instructions to deal with it: - and I'm puzzled. Really you know you are foolish to want a copy. It's a thirty guinea book, of which so many copies are being sold as will meet the printing bills (about 120 copies perhaps) with some off-prints of the unadorned text for the twenty or thirty fellows who shared the campaign with me. I can't give them 30-guinea presents: they can't buy 30-guinea books. So I want the subscribers to pay for my generosity in giving them free copies. The prime cost lies in the pictures (about 60, many in colour, at 10/- a print!) and the pictures are only an unjustifiable whim of mine. They have been done by British artists whom I liked, + who would work for me. Such a luxury book is for the idle rich. Mrs. Lamont is getting one. Huntingdon [!] + Pierpont Morgan aren't.! . Do you feel justified in chucking away so much on an amateur production? The writing is pretentious, dull, hysterical, egotistical, + preternaturally long. No human being has ever been to the end of it [the 335,000 word ms.]. They return it, thumbed to about half way, with pretty speeches. So long as I hold it secret, the sight of it is a boast, so long it will be praised. Seriously, it isn't any earthly good. It costs as I have said, may be a year yet in printing, + is horrible in parts. Eleanor (beg her pardon, but that's her only possible name. The proper ones only indicate her wayward choice of parents etc.) would be sick over it. The thing will not be reprinted entire in my life-time: you suggest 'for a long time.' . but the prospect isn't pleasing. There will be an American Edition, to secure copyright. Doubleday, probably. He has made a reasonable estimate. It would be printed at my expense, two copies for the Library of Congress, or whatever the show is, + eight for sale: + the sale price will be prohibitive, so that they will never sell, + the edition will never be exhausted, + no one may pirate! I suggest 10,000 dollars, but F.N.D. hasn't yet considered what is above-high-water-mark in U.S.A. Tell me, please, if you are knowing! If despite all faults (my most honest dissuasion puts people on sometimes!) you want a copy: then you'll have to send fifteen guineas, half price - E. will know the size of the extinct coin - to: Manager / Bank of Liverpool + Martins / 68 Lombard St. / London, E.C.3, payable to TE Lawrence, + 'Seven Pillars account' . Balance when you get the book. Let me strongly urge you not to. I have 90 subscribers, so there is no urgency - on the point of helping lame dogs! [.]". - When the book finally appeared in 1926, the cost of each copy to Lawrence was triple the selling price, and it was not until the fourth reprint of the 1927 abridgement "Revolt in the Desert" that his debts were paid off. As the included receipt shows, Shepardson was undeterred and duly transferred the £15. 15/- to Liverpool & Martins' (the last copy of the 1926 "Pillars" at auction commanded £30,000 at Sotheby's in 2009). - The U.S. businessman Whitney Hart Shepardson (1890-1966), educated at Colgate, Balliol (as a Rhodes Scholar), and Harvard, had served as aide to the State Department at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference, where he may have met Lawrence. Between 1925 and 1927 he served as director on J. D. Rockefeller's General Education Board. A leading O.S.S. operative in WWII, he was the first London head of Secret Intelligence and remained with the organization soon to become the C.I.A. until 1946.

The Pageant of Empire Souvenir Volume. Cover title: Pageant of British Empire Souvenir Volume

London.: Fleetway Press Ltd.. 1924.. Color pictographic / pictorial map, color lithographic illustrations including a four panel foldout, pictorial endpapers, 55pp, 16 x 12 inches, color decorative paper covered boards (hardbound). One sheet apparently missing from the front of the volume (behind the front free endpaper), previous owner's signature to title page, repaired split to head of spine, light soiling and wear to covers, corners bumped. Paper label glued to front cover below "Empire" in the title. Good to very good condition. A beautiful production lavishly illustrated with richly colored lithographed illustrations by many famous artists of the day celebrating the rich history of the British Empire and commemorating the "Pageant of Empire" which were historical pageants that were performed at the Empire Stadium (later Wembley Stadium) in 1924 as part of the British Empire Exhibition. Among the richly colored illustrations are "Hong Kong: the Procession of Lanterns," "Singapore: Stamford Raffles' Farewell," and a double page color decorative map by MacDonald Gill "Map of the World in the Time of Cabot." Also present is the four panel foldout lithographic plate by Brangwyn of the pageant (with scenery by Brangwyn) that took place at the British Empire Exhibition. This foldout plate was apparently usually published in the special London and North Eastern Railway edition, along with an additional plate at the front of the book ("The Border Bridge"). Although this copy of the book is not identified on the cover as the special edition, it may have been intended as one: there is evidence that a sheet at the front of the volume has been excised (a plate not called for in the regular edition). .

        Saint Joan: a Chronicle Play

Constable and Company Ltd 1924 - ‘Rough Proof - Unpublished’ printed on upper cover, last leaf soiled and frayed, pp. [iv], 111, 8vo, original printed wrappers, spine defective and lower wrapper lacking, stitching loosening at either end, Sybil Thorndike’s copy (see below), preserved in a dark green morocco Fire-Resisting pull-off case by Zaehnsdorf Shaw created the role of Joan for Sybil Thorndike, which proved to be the zenith of her career, as also of her husband Lewis Casson, who directed the play alongside Shaw. After its initial run of 244 performance it was revived many times, and the title role was last played by Dame Sybil in 1941. The half-title is inscribed by Sybil Thorndike: ‘This is Sybil Thorndike’s book & anyone who takes it is a liar & a thief & a murderer to boot!!’ Shaw has added later ‘Mr T.J. Keely having apparently disregarded this communication and purloined this book, expects the author to endorse the transaction. Accordingly – G. Bernard Shaw 5/4/24.’ Dame Sybil’s inscription actually continues for another 2 lines, but Shaw has written across this and it is difficult to read - ‘Please return as fast as you can!’. The upper cover bears the purple stamp of Lewis Casson. Although the text is not marked in any way, the copy clearly enjoyed an adventurous life. The portrait of Dame Sybil which heads her entry in ODNB is a photograph of her in this role.

Huntingdon [!] + Pierpont Morgan aren't...! ... The thing will not be reprinted entire in my life-time: you suggest 'for a long time.' ... but the prospect isn't pleasing. [...]". - When the book finally appeared in 1926, the cost of each copy to Lawrence was triple the selling price, and it was not until the fourth reprint of the 1927 abridgement "Revolt in the Desert" that his debts were paid off. As the included receipt shows, Shepardson was undeterred and duly transferred the 15. 15/- to Liverpool & Martins' (the last copy of the 1926 "Pillars" at auction commanded 30,000 at Sotheby's in 2009). - The U.S. businessman Whitney Hart Shepardson (1890-1966), educated at Colgate, Balliol (as a Rhodes Scholar), and Harvard, had served as aide to the State Department at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference, where he may have met Lawrence. Between 1925 and 1927 he served as director on J. D. Rockefeller's General Education Board. A leading O.S.S. operative in WWII, he was the first London head of Secret Intelligence and remained with the organization soon to become the C.I.A. until 1946.

        MEN AND BOYS. An Anthology

Privately printed in New York. 1924. First edition, first printing and first state. Contemporary half blue morocco over marbled paper-covered boards. Gilt titles, borders and raised bands to the spine. Small book label of Herbert Boyce Satcher to bottom edge of front pastedown. A very good copy, the binding a little rubbed to the extremities, the contents complete and without inscriptions or stamps. Minor finger-marking and the odd light corner crease throughout. This copy seemingly unique with the integral first state half title / variant title page present (of the handful of copies known and inspected by the bibliographer D. H. Mader (who also edited the reprint), all lack the half title or have it as a cancel). With a loosely inserted carbon copy of an English poem (first 2 lines reading: 'Somewhere he lies asleep/ Serene and free from dread'). Rare. The first anthology of homosexual verse published in the United States and one of the cornerstones of any collection of gay literature. A search of worldwide Institutional holdings of the 1924 first edition would suggest only one copy in the UK (in the Bodleian Library, Oxford) and one in the US (Dartmouth College, New Hampshire). All others hold only the 1978 second edition.

Cyrano - Dessin préparatoire pour la couverture de la revue éponyme

Original drawing in ink and gouache, recorded in golden frame and mat is signed in the lower right of the sheet.Louis Anquetin, Étrépagny born in 1861 and died in Paris in 1932, is an important French painter. He began his career with avant-garde artists such as Vincent Van Gogh and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. With Emile Bernard, he is the inventor of Cloisonnisme. From 1884 to 1893 Louis Anquetin continues to explore the new possibilities introduced by the release of Impressionism in French painting. From 1893, following a long confrontation with the "old masters", he adopts a bias that will put the painting on the sidelines of the general movement of the art, and will take away from his friends. Dazzled by Baroque art and creative force, he thinks as his childhood friends are engaged in a path that will lead to the death of painting. He believes in a "perfect painting" embodied in the re-remembering the lessons Michelangelo and Rubens among others. His work becomes more classic, it advocates a return to the trade, proposing to reflect on the a priori conditions of any possible form of art while respecting the rules of perspective and anatomy, as practiced by the masters the sixteenth and seventeenth siècle.Ne leaving only a few works that can be described as monumental, Anquetin proves prolific for his many studies and sketches, who considered that the design was "a very powerful means of expression," the mandatory basis for all plastiques.En arts voluntarily working backward of his time, Louis Anquetin made possible the existence of an original modern figuration. By his stubbornness and his passion for painting, he has indeed prevented is completely blocked the path of the great Western tradition. One can admire his works in many prestigious museums such as the Musée d'Orsay and the Louvre in Paris, San Francisco and Detroit, Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the National Gallery and the Tate London, etc. S.n.
