The Show-Off: A Transcript of Life in Three Acts

Boston: Little Brown. 1924. First. First edition. Preface by Heywood Broun. Fine in a presentable, good plus dustwrapper with some chipping at the top of the rear panel, affecting some text, and a scrape on the front panel, also affecting the text of a blurb. A wildly successful Broadway comedy that made Kelly the most talked-of playwright on Broadway (a few decades later his niece, Grace, would reign first in Hollywood and then in Monaco). It was the basis for three films: a 1926 Malcolm St. Clair version featuring Louise Brooks and Ford Sterling; a 1934 Charles Resiner version re-scripted by Herman J. Mankiewicz and featuring Spencer Tracy; and finally a 1946 Harry Beaumont version with Red Skelton and Marilyn Maxwell. Rare in jacket. .

The sisters, Charlotte (born 21 April 1816), Emily (born 30 July 1818), and Anne (born 17 January 1820), are well known as poets and novelists. They originally published their poems and novels under the male pseudonyms Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell, much like many contemporary female writers. Their stories immediately attracted attention, although not always the best, for their passion and originality. Charlotte's Jane Eyre was the first to know success, while Emily's Wuthering Heights, Anne's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and other works were later to be accepted as masterpieces of literature.   CONDITION:  Conditions are Very Good/Excellent.         The Art of the Poster. Its Origin, Evolution & Purpose

London: Cecil Palmer, 1924. Quarto. xii, 190pp. Presentation copy with a manuscript letter laid in from the author to Frank Pick, the dedicatee. The book was given as a gift on the day before its official publication. While serving as Managing Director of the London Underground, Frank Pick revolutionized the corporation's visual brand. He commissioned both established and rising contemporary artists to create publicity posters that reflected his strong interest in modern art, architecture, and design. One of the first recruits, in 1915, was a young E. McKnight Kauffer, whose work incorporated bold elements of Cubuism and Futurism. In the letter, Kauffer thanks Pick for his encouragement and writes, "I am reminded of my timid entrance into your office some nine years ago and of the importance that interview was to my life's work. In dedicating this work to you I feel I have had one honour that I shall always regard with the greatest esteem." In the postscript, Kauffer asks if he can stop by the following week to show his completed posters for Winter Sales and the Aquarium. In the years following his first commission, Kauffer became one of the leading and most prolific poster artists of the 1920s and 30s. The letter notes that the book was given as a gift on the day before its official publication, and it bears the date stamp of Pick's office in the lower left corner. The book itself is a valuable resource on the history of poster art, paying special attention to the role of posters in advertising. Illustrated throughout with numerous black & white and color plates. Some light foxing to letter, book shows some slight discoloration to covers, else a fine copy of notable provenance.

Signed 1924 Letter from James George Frazer with The Golden Bough

The Book League of America, 1924-01-01. Hardcover. Very Good. A two-page letter from the Scottish anthropologist and author of the classic The Golden Bough, with the book it was once attached to. The letter is a single folded sheet, presumably on the author's stationary (Printed "Lanfine, Hills Road, Cambridge") dated April 23, 1924, apparently to scientist Dorothy S. Lubin. She (with David I. Macht) authored a treatise titled "A Phyto-Pharmacological Study of Menstrual Toxin" in The Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics in 1924. Frazer thanks her for her article and vows to include her research about the physiological dangers of menses in future editions of the Golden Bough. Her investigations "help to show that savages are not such fools as we are apt to take them for," he writes, and signs the letter. Also includes the first volume of The Golden Bough: A Study in Magic and Religion. New York: The Book League of America, 1929. 392 p. Green cloth with gilt lettering. Vol. 1 of 2. No jacket. Very Good condition. Clean pages, rubbed lettering on spine. Bookplate on paste down. Glue stain on paste down from where letter was affixed.

Bronzes antiques de la Chine appartenant à C. T. Loo et Cie

Paris, France: Librairie Nationale d'Art et d'Histoire, 1924. Issued October 30, 1924. G. van Oest, editor. Printed by l'Imprimerie Protat Frères a Macon. With heliotype plates produced by Léon Marotte. First and presumed only printing of this book. With unstated limitation but probably no more than 500 copies printed. Principal text in French and English, with secondary text in Chinese. 13.5 x 10.5 inches. Original paper wrappers and over-wrappers, European-style. The over-wrappers are somewhat age-darkened, and with title page reproduced on the front over-wrapper. Virtually unbumped spine head. Spine tail with half-inch tear. Unbumped corners. The wrapper is firmly attached to the text-block. Very light, seven-inch long moisture stain to the front wrapper; quite minor, a cosmetic issue only, and not showing on the underside of the wrapper. Else the wrappers and over-wrappers are exceptionally clean. Off-setting to the front and rear FEPs from the over-wrappers. The book contains 68 numbered pages, plus 40 unnumbered pages of XL duotone plates, as called for. A few of the plates with the notation "sold" in the margin in soft lead pencil. With gently deckled top, fore and bottom page edges to a handsome effect. The book is clean, inside and out, except as noted. A Very Good copy. Very scarce in any condition. An extremely valuable reference work for collectors and dealers of ancient Chinese bronzes. Specifically, this is a catalogue of ancient bronzes that Loo brought from China to France in the early 1920s and offered for sale at his Paris gallery. The principal art-historical periods mentioned in the catalogue include the Shang, Chou, Ts'in, Han and Tang Dynasties. The Chinese art dealer C. T. Loo (1880-1957) held court at his galleries in Paris, New York, Shanghai and Beijing. He stocked frescoes, temple statues and freshly excavated bronzes, in addition to jades, porcelains and other antiquities. An undoubted connoiseur, Loo was accused of looting priceless originals as well as knowingly marketing fakes during his career. He is still controversial in China. As is noted in the introduction to this very catalogue, even in the early years of the 20th century the market was flooded with reproductions of antique Chinese bronzes and even a discerning eye was sometimes fooled.. First French Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.

Trente ans D'Humour [Inscribed Association Copy]

Paris: France-Edition. (1924). Inscribed by Miller to Emil Schnelluck, one of his oldest friends and one of only a handful who stayed close to Miller through the enormous changes in his life after he met June Mansfield and left his previous existence behind in almost every respect. Schnelluck had been to Europe long before Miller had, and he used to recount to Miller his memories of his visits there, which Miller eagerly soaked up. Now Miller, in Paris for the second time in October, 1930, relays this book to his friend, with a recommendation that it is "fairly easy to read and quite entertaining. Try it!" He also recounts seeing "a peach of a Huysmans yesterday on Blvd Raspail called 'Croquis de Paris.' So much to buy -- so much -- if one only had the dough!" A wonderful inscription to one of his best friends, focused on Paris and books, not to mention poverty -- the important early themes of Miller's literary life. Wrappers are missing and the inscription is on the half-title which is the first page here. Page detached from the rest of the text; extremely brittle, acidifying pages. The condition is fair, and with a risk of deterioration. Miller's underlinings and comments in the text. An excellent personal association. First Edition. Softcover.

Idea. Ein Beitrag zur Begriffsgeschichte der älteren Kunsttheorie. (Studien der Bibliothek Warburg. Herausgegeben von Fritz Saxl.) [Idea. A Concept in Art Theory.]

      B. G. Teubner, Leipzig-Berlin 1924 - First edition. With numerous inset illustrations. Bookplate on flyleaf. In original cloth. (6), 145, [1] p. One of the earliest, and the first major art theoretical book of Erwin Panofsky (1892-1968), examining the history of the neoplatonic theory of art, discusses the ideas of the intellect in relation to the imitation of the world of perception. Panofsky was a German art historian who developed a special approach in art history, with the interpretation and understanding the works through an analysis of symbolism, history and social factors. Panofsky studied philosophy and art history at several German universities and receiving his Ph.D in 1914. He took the chair of the art history department at University of Hamburg in 1920. Emigrated to the United States in 1934 and started to teach at New York University and soon became a permanent professor at Princeton. Panofsky was in the circle of intellects around Aby Warburg the founder of the Warburg Institute and he published a monograph on Dürer's Melencolia I. together with Fritz Saxl the librarian of the Institute in 1923. A year later, this book, "Idea", Panofsky's first significant work on art history has been published in the series "Studien der Bibliothek Warburg". First edition. With numerous inset illustrations.
