Photo Album]: U.S. Marine Corps Football Team, San Diego, California

San Diego 1924 - Oblong octavo. Brown leather over paper boards bound with metal brads, with the word "photographs" stamped in gilt on the front cover, measuring 7" x 11". A collection of 125 sepia toned photographs affixed to stiff blank black leaves. Various sizes ranging from 3.5" x 5.5" to 6" x 9.5", many with captions. A handful of photos are missing from pages, some wear and chipping to the black page mounts. The final four or five photos are a bit soiled, but overall the images are clear and sharp. Very good with some rubbing, and modest chips and tears. Included are 76 football photos, 16 military scenes, and 29 real photo postcards. Two photos of the owner of the album are affixed to the inside of the front cover, unidentified, except as a member of the 1925 team. One photo of the Marine mascot for the Devil Dogs carries the name of the Tierney Photo studio. There is a photo of the 1924 line and backfield members of the team, players identified in ink by their last names, a small photo of the 1924 team, annotated along the bottom of the photo with a typed list of player's names, and a large photo of the entire 1925 team posed in front of the goal posts. A photo of two teams in action on the field of play has been annotated in ink, "Marines vs Naval Training Station, score 61-0." Several other action photos of games are included, the Marines playing the Naval Hospital, the USS *California*, USS *Melville*, Riverside American Legion, etc. The military photos show drills and marching troops at the Marine Corps base in San Diego. Photo postcards include four images of the USS *Shenandoah* dirigible, three of the Panama Canal, and one each of the USS *Tennessee*, USS *Idaho*, USS *California*, and the USS *Oklahoma*. There is also a photographic rendering of the Marine Base in San Diego, "as it will be when complete." Lieutenant Elmer Hall, pictured in the 1924 team photo, played for the team between 1917 and 1925, and coached them from 1919-1940, including their first undefeated season in 1939. He helped define the football program at the base and Hall Field was named for him in 1956. A wonderful and detailed album of this military football team in California. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Robert Schumann's "Carnaval" is a collection of small piano pieces completed in 1835 which shows the composer intertwining his innermost personal world with his public life as pianist, music critic, and composer. The work was inspired by his infatuation with Ernestine von Fricken, a young pianist whom he met in Leipzig. Each of the 15 etchings is signed in pencil by the artist. Afterword by Oscar Bie, renown German art historian and publicist.         European Life in Peking in the Early 1920s - Family Photograph Album.

1924.. Photograph album of 53 photographs (mostly silver gelatin) compiled as a gift. The photographs show scenes from the life of an American(?) family living in Peking in the 1920s as well as images taken of Chinese life. The many large and frequently beautifully composed images, show stylishly posed photographs of the family, pets and the Chinese servants with the house and courtyard in the background. There are also some quite poigniant photographs of Chinese children seen on their trips out. Two interior shots showing the manner in which the family lived with an attractive mix of Western furniture in Chinese decorated rooms. The man and his wife were clearly keen golfers 7 images showing members of Chinese golf clubs including the Paomachang Golf Club, Tientsin Golf Club and the Peking Golf and Country Club. The only two non-Chinese photographs in this album were taken at St Andrews on Scotland. The remaining often large 21 photographs in the album show scenes of the Western Hills, Peking and Chinese people including a "lower middle class funeral" and a close-up of a "country urchin" on the road 25 miles from Peking. Most photos are mounted one to a page and are captioned below in ink, one small snapshot loosely inserted. Some of the photos are printed on cream papers which were very fashionable at the time. Some occasional browning but largely very good. Inscribed to Mother and Isobel/With Love from/Ainslie/Christmas 1924. Oblong full leather album rubbed at extremities measures 26 x 34cm with string tie covers, lifting at corners. A very nice album indeed. .

        Our Second American Adventure.

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1924., 1924. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED AND SIGNED by the author and his wife. Octavo, pp.[vi]; 250. Bound in publisher's back cloth, with gilt titles to spine. Illustrated with nine black and white photographs. Some spotting within, binding is rubbed, boards a little bowed, joints starting at headcap, neat owner name to flyleaf. A good copy vastly improved by the author's inscription to the title page; with our united kind wishes / Arthur Conan Doyle. / Jean Conan Doyle [in her hand]. Doyle's personal account of his travels through the West Coast of the United States and Canada on a lecture tour concerning the spiritualist question. Jean Doyle remained in Sussex when Sir Arthur embarked upon his American journey and according to his biographer Russell Miller, Doyle's letters home were reminiscent of those of a lovelorn teenager, even alluding to sex upon his return (The Adventures of Arthur Conan Doyle/Harvill Secker). The combination of signatures on this, of all titles, therefore renders this a most interesting item

BEN HECHT'S CHICAGO LITERARY TIMES MODERN SARDONIC JOURNAL

Chicago, 1924. Six issues. Illustrations. First four folio tabloid, numbers 6 & 7 large quarto tabloid. Printed self wrappers. Folio issues with horizontal fold, as issued. II:1 has tiny split at fold fore-edge to later leaves, but a somewhat longer and a bit ragged tear at fold fore-edge of the first leaf; otherwise the lot is in near fine condition, and is highly unusual thus. Edited by Ben Hecht and associate editor Maxwell Bodenheim, with both editors being the primary contributors of the text. Published semi-monthly beginning 1 March 1923, and concluding with the last number present here, CHICAGO LITERARY TIMES (as the issues in the first volume were titled) was in many ways Hecht's response to his dismissal by the CHICAGO DAILY NEWS and the rise of Chicago's prudishness in the face of the advance of modern letters. Hoffman, et al, are worth quoting at length: "...famous for its broad ironies and its parodies of the literary life of Chicago and New York. It is primarily a literary 'stunt,' immensely amusing, and has to be accepted as such. It is arranged in newspaper format, its shrieking headlines announcing 'events' improbable and ludicrous. Ben Hecht's 1001 AFTERNOONS IN CHICAGO appears in each issue, as does Bodenheim's 'authorized' but incredible autobiography. Ring Lardner and Samuel Putnam also contribute. The magazine is a thoroughly enjoyable bit of 'history' of Chicago's Bohemianism and how it grew." HOFFMAN, et al, p.268.

ARABIAN NIGHTS. Tales from the Thousand and One Nights

London: Hodder & Stoughton, n.d. (1924). First edition. With 12 beautiful mounted colour plates by Edward J. Detmold with the original tissue guards with captions. Large 4to, publisher’s original white buckram decorated with elaborate all-over gilt pictorial designs and lettering on the upper cover and the spine, in the rare publisher's box printed on the upper cover in gray/green and with a pastedown Detmold colourplate. [viii, 240. An extremely fine copy, as near as pristine as could be hoped for, clearly this book has only rarely been outside its original box, the plates fresh and perfect, the gilt on the binding and the white cloth essentially as new, the prelim leaves only with just faint traces of the foxing which commonly plagues this title. The rare box is very attractive, the lid skillfully, unobtusively and sympathetically reinforced with binders cloth, as are the corners of the box. A STUNNING COPY, WE CAN'T REALLY IMAGINE ONE BETTER, THE BOOK VERY SCARCE AND IN THIS CONDITION EXCEPTIONALLY RARE. Detmold's illustrations are rich with color and reflect well the oriental splendor of the tales. THE ARABIAN NIGHTS is one of Detmold's most elusive titles and is one of the finest examples of the artist’s abilities. His 12 colour plates to such well loved stories as ‘Sindbad, ‘Ali Baba’ and ‘Aladddin’ rank among the best of illustrations from a period often considered the golden age of illustrated literature. Despite the effort taken on the part of the publisher to produce these beautiful books they have always been prone to foxing, and the use of white cloth has always been risky. Thus, copies are typically found with considerable mellowing and soiling. This copy we dare say has spent very little time outside of the box which has protected it so well for nearly a century and is truly an exception to the general rule.

[Photo Album]: U.S. Marine Corps Football Team, San Diego, California

San Diego. 1924-25. Oblong octavo. A photo of two teams in action on the field of play has been annotated in ink, "Marines vs Naval Training Station, score 61-0." Several other action photos of games are included, the Marines playing the Naval Hospital, the USS California, USS Melville, Riverside American Legion, etc. The military photos show drills and marching troops at the Marine Corps base in San Diego. Photo postcards include four images of the USS Shenandoah dirigible, three of the Panama Canal, and one each of the USS Tennessee, USS Idaho, USS California, and the USS Oklahoma. A wonderful and detailed album of this military football team in California. .

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1924. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Burgundy cloth with gilt spine lettering and blind-embossed front board lettering. 227pp. Near fine. A tight and handsome first edition of the only book by the famed, influential financier whose fortunes were made in metals and banking; in 1902 he became president of Pittsburgh's Mellon National Bank; in public life, he served as secretary of the treasury (1921-32) under Harding, Coolidge and Hoover and as ambassador to Great Britain. On the front flyleaf, he boldly inscribes and signs this copy in black ink in the month of publication: "To / W.N. Thompson / with my thanks for his aid, / A.W. Mellon / April 1924." In the preface, Mellon "express[es] my indebtedness to Mr. S. Parker Gilbert, former Under Secretary of the Treasury" -- Thompson served as Gilbert's assistant, so apparently was somehow involved in the compilation of this book, which consists of various writings of Mellon which "appeared from time to time in letters to Committees of Congress and to various organizations and individuals." A choice association copy of a noteworthy text on taxation. Very scarce.
